The University of Jordan The Faculty of Nursing Clinical Nursing Department 2013 - 2014 Course Title : Adult Health Nursing I Course Number : 0702206 Credit Hours : 3 credit hours Prerequisites : Introduction to Adult Health Nursing (0702204) Course co-coordinators: Course description This course is sequel to the Introduction to Adult Health Nursing course. It introduces students to the conditions that affect the functional health patterns of an adult patient. It focuses on the bio-psycho-social responses of adults to actual and high risk conditions that affect their functional health patterns. The nursing process will be used as a framework to formulate nursing diagnoses and identify nursing interventions directed towards promoting, maintaining and restoring the health of adults and their families. Aim of the course The course aims to introduce the students to the nursing care of patients with acute and chronic conditions that affect the functional health patterns of an adult patient. Intended Learning outcomes (ILOs): Successful completion of this course should lead to the following learning outcomes: A. Knowledge and understanding: 1. Identify the acute and chronic conditions that affect the adult patients. 2. Explain factors that affect adult functional health patterns 3. Define the key concepts related to the alteration in the functional health patterns of adult patients. 4. Identify the impact of the disease process and hospitalization on the patient and family. B. Cognitive and intellectual skills: 1. Utilize the assessment parameters to determine the status of the adult patients with alteration in the functional health patterns. 2. Identify nursing diagnoses related to the conditions of alterations in functional health patterns. 3. Discuss nursing interventions that promote optimal physiological functioning including discharge planning C. Subject specific skills: 1. Integrate the nursing process as an approach for presenting the health problems of adult patient& utilize it in meeting the needs of adult patients. 2. Describe the effect of the disease process on patients and their families, in order to help them to cope with stressors during illness. 3. Discuss the therapeutic management of adults with alterations in their health conditions. 4. Adhere to the nurse’s role in providing a holistic care for an adult patients D. Transferable skills: 1. Formulate goals and outcome criteria for evaluating the effectiveness of nursing interventions for clients with alterations in functional health patterns. 2. Students are expected to prepare for lectures by reading the assigned material and reviewing relevant anatomy, physiology, pathophysiology and physical assessment related to the topic. 2. Attendance of lectures is mandatory. Students who miss more than 15% with or without excuse will be dismissed from the course. (See the university policies regarding absence). 3. Students unable to take a scheduled exam are expected to inform the instructor within 3 days and make arrangements for a make-up exam. Make up exams will be given only to students who have notified the instructor and set up an alternate time. Any missed exam will result in a grade of zero for that exam. 4.
