SECTION 1: EDUCATION
Bachelor of Arts Honours: Psychology and Family and Child Studies (2011). (In progress)
University of Guelph, Guelph, Ontario, Canada
Dean’s Honours List for a standing of above 80% on the previous two semesters.
Thesis Title: A Qualitative Analysis of University-Aged Gay Males’ Perceptions Relating to the
Impact on Dating and Sexual Relationships via Technology.
Supervisor: Robin Milhausen PhD
Abbey Park High School (2007).
Oakville, Ontario, Canada.
Honours standing: ending 93% average
SECTION 2: PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE
Non-Suicidal Self-Injury Research Lab (2011-present)
- I have recently joined this lab, which focuses on self-injury primarily among the youth
population. I am currently working on a project that looks at Internet search terms focusing
on suicide. I am filtering from Country and search results and looking at what is most
commonly searched that can be seen as hindering rather than helpful to people who are at
risk of harm. Once we determine the areas and sites that are most commonly searched by
youth (through desktops, laptops, and smartphones), we can work on an intervention by
having positive and helpful links put on such sites. This project is currently being funded.
Supervisor: Dr. Stephen Lewis
Learning Disabilities Placement (2011)
- As part of a seminar class at the University of Guelph, I have been placed in an elementary
school working one-on-one with a learning disabled child. My job is to help the student
succeed academically and teach him strategies for coping with his learning disabilities.
Supervisor: Dr. Sean Cameron
2
Children’s Aid Financial Volunteer – Guelph (2010-2011)
- My job was to organize reduced fees around the Guelph community for children in need
who are currently under care/supervision from the Family and Children’s Services agency.
This involved distributing letters across the city and handling the follow up with the
community partners. I was successfully able to get the children and the volunteers of the
agency discounts at over twenty places in the Guelph area.
Supervisor: Eva Marmurek
St. John Bosco School Development – Guelph (2010-present)
- I have worked with Dr. Margaret Lumley in the assessment of the newly opened (September
2010) John Bosco Secondary School in Guelph. The school currently enrolls approximately
85 students and has a waiting list. It is a place where high school-aged students can work at
their own pace on individualized programming in an informal setting. The teens engage in
weekly volunteering in the community. The students are praised for their strengths rather
than being burdened by their academic weaknesses.
Supervisor: Margaret Lumley PhD
Building Healthy Relationships Study and Research Lab – Guelph (2010-present)
- As a part of a seminar course offered at the University of Guelph, I have been afforded the
opportunity to go into the Catholic school, St. James Secondary, to teach grade ten children
about healthy sexual, emotional, and physical relationships. I am also involved in the lab
working on building healthy minds and relationships.
Supervisor: Karl Hennig PhD
Family and Children’s Services (Children’s Aid) – Guelph (2010-present)
- I have been working with two children who have severe trauma history and many
psychological diagnoses. They are two brothers coming from a very unstable home. My job
is to be a ‘special friend’ for them and take them out each week to help brighten their week.
I am to report any suspicions to FCS right away and thus I monitor what the children say
and their current home environment very closely. I have a pre-arranged $80 budget for the
children each week. I have been actively involved with the FCS team and have helped with
recruiting and training. In the future I hope to job shadow a social worker and become a
COSA (Court Ordered Supervised Access) worker.
Supervisor: Eva Marmurek (Coordinator) + Jennifer Bennalick M.SW (Social Worker)
University Course Construction: Clinical Psychology Practical Seminar (2010)
I helped create a course which will be taught in 2012-2013 at the University of Guelph. My
part in the construction included textbook choice, outline, paper topics, and lecture layout.
The course was designed for forty students who will be placed to work one-on-one with a
child who is ‘at risk’ and found to not be very resilient. This course will follow the Lunch
Buddy Program criteria and will be twelve weeks in duration.
Supervisor: Margaret Lumley PhD
Lunch Buddy Program – St. Patrick’s Elementary School, Guelph, Ontario (Sept – Apr. 2009)
- I worked with a grade 5 student who was at the time in foster care with a physical abuse
history. The Lunch Buddy Program is designed to provide mentoring to at risk youth. I met
with my mentee twice weekly.
- I maintained frequent communication with my faculty advisor for this project as well as the
school Principal, foster mother, guidance counselor and homeroom teacher.
Supervisor: Margaret Lumley PhD
3
Resilient Youth Research Group (2009-present)
- The work entailed data transcription, collection, and coding. The group consists of six
students who meet biweekly on the University of Guelph campus. We aim to better
understand the development of children's emotional difficulties and the factors that promote
emotional well-being. Many clinical interviews are conducted with parents and their children
for research purposes in the lab.
Supervisor: Margaret Lumley PhD
URGiS – Undergraduate Research Group in Sexuality (2009-present)
- This undergraduate group consists of about fifteen individuals including myself who are
currently working on a project related to sexual scripts among heterosexual men and
women.
Supervisor: Robin Milhausen PhD
Distress Centre: Wellington/Dufferin (2008-present)
- At the Distress Centre I field calls relating to suicide, isolation, child abuse, shelter care,
stress, family and work issues, sexuality, etc.
- I have been training new volunteers to answer calls effectively and manage stressful calls
(for example, those involving active suicide or abuse, police, ACTT, FCS, Mobile Crisis
Units, hospital and shelter accommodations, social worker/psychological intervention) since
September 2009.
Supervisor: Elizabeth Pease + Tahlia Simpson (coordinators)
Grade 8 Orientation Motivational Speaker – Abbey Park High School, Oakville, Ontario (2007)
