Research Funding
4. Research Funding
We are now working alongside RDInfo, part of the National Institute for Health
Research (NIHR), to bring you funding opportunities of relevance to the nursing
and midwifery community. Whether you are looking for small or large amounts,
to fund PhD's, or attendance at a local conference, the reality is there will always
be more requests than funding available. Anecdotal evidence suggests that only 1
in 7 bids for funding is successful; whilst not intended to be disheartening, it is
sensible to be pragmatic when applying for funding, and to follow the principle of
"if at first you don't succeed, try, try again". The following funding opportunities
have deadlines in the next 3 months:
i) Alzheimer's Society - PhD Studentships. Awards are made by competitive,
consumer-prioritised and peer-reviewed application. These awards are intended

8. Williams, I. de Silva, D. & Ham, C. (2009), "Promoting and
embedding innovation: learning from experience", Health
Services Management Centre
Innovation in the NHS is now being driven regionally by strategic health
authorities. Learning how other national and international organisations have
approached, planned and embedded innovation will help SHAs foster a culture of
innovation. This overview outlines key evidence about what has worked well and
what has been challenging elsewhere in adopting and disseminating innovation. It
has been jointly commissioned and produced by NHS East Midlands and the
University of Birmingham Health Services Management Centre.

9. Research Information Network (RIN) report, "E-journals: their
use, value and impact"
A new RIN report, based on a study by the Centre for Information Behaviour and
the Evaluation of Research (CIBER) at University College London, looks into how
researchers use e-journals, the impact this has on provision of library and
information services, and links with research outcomes. Many surveys have
shown how much researchers welcome online access to journals; but the RIN
report goes further by demonstrating how users actually behave and use ejournals in practice through deep log analysis of publishers' usage logs. The RIN
report provides an evidence-based study to give a detailed portrait of the
information seeking behaviour of UK researchers, of how they make use of online
journals and of the benefits that might result.

10.Canadian Health Services Research Foundation (CHSRF): Insight
and Action publications and other resources
Each issue of Insight and Action is based on a timely and relevant question, and
links those who practice knowledge transfer and exchange in health services with
some of the most relevant research in that area. Each issue also summarizes a
variety of key resources and provides references for further reading.
This month's featured resources: Issue 52 (Apr 09)
i) Measuring the impact of research: how can we show return on
investments in health research? (Part II)
Key messages
* The Canadian Academy of Health Sciences recently proposed an evaluation
framework designed to address specific impact evaluation questions about the
value of health research and health research funding.
* Among the greatest challenges in assessing impact is the definition of "impact"
itself, which can be different for every funding program. Defining the impact of
health services research poses its own challenges - for example, it is often not
feasible to define ideal policy- or decision-making impacts, since the research
rarely yields unambiguous conclusions with obvious application.
* Case studies are emerging as a popular method for measuring the impact of
health research, since they help to identify the factors that lead to research
success.

11. RCN Publications
RCN members can download all electronic publications from the RCN free of
charge. RCN members and non-members can order a hard copy of a publication
(where applicable) but this will entail a small charge. Recent publications include:
i) Raising concerns, raising standards (Publication code: 003 532, Publication
date: 11 May 2009). Abstract: The RCN is here to help you give the best care you
can, to help you protect patients and to protect you if you raise concerns over
patient care.
ii) Guidance on uniforms and work wear (Publication code: 002 724,
Publication date: 11 May 2009). Abstract: This updated guidance sets out
information on issues related to the selection, wearing and decontamination of
uniforms or clothing worn in the delivery of patient care and is aimed at nurses
and their employers. It can be applied to all settings in which health care takes
place and for any clothing worn when undertaking patient care activities.
iii) Health and nursing care in the criminal justice service. RCN guidance
for nursing staff (Publication code: 003 307, Publication date: 11 May 2009).
Abstract: The role of health care nurses in the criminal justice service is varied,
complex and often challenging. This guide will help you to access up to date
information, toolkits and sources of advice to assist you in your work. It is a
resource to support the delivery of high quality services to people in a broad
range of environments, from police custody to high security prisons in all four UK
countries. This guide replaces the 2002 Royal College of Nursing publication,
Nursing in Prisons, and highlights the specific health and nursing care needs of
offenders.
iv) Measuring for quality in health and social care. An RCN position
statement (Publication code: 003535). Abstract: This information sets out the
RCN’s position in relation to quality and its measurement, and outlines the RCN’s
input on this issue. Designed to be of value to those for whom quality and its
measurement is integral to their day-to-day work, it will also assist the wider
health and social community to understand the contribution that nursing makes in
this arena.

13.The Centre for Reviews and Dissemination (CRD)
CRD is part of the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) and is a
department of the University of York. CRD, which was established in 1994, is one
of the largest groups in the world engaged exclusively in evidence synthesis in
the health field. CRD undertakes systematic reviews evaluating the research
evidence on health and public health questions of national and international
importance. We produce the DARE, NHS EED and HTA databases which are used
extensively by health professionals, policy makers and researchers around the
world. We also undertake methods research and produce internationally accepted
guidelines for undertaking systematic reviews.
CRD databases updated
This week (13/05 - 19/05 2009) 53 new records have been added to the DARE,
NHS EED and HTA databases.
i) 38 full abstracts of quality assessed systematic reviews
ii) 15 full abstracts of quality assessed economic evaluations
iii) 0 health technology assessments
Featured abstract of the week:
i) Antihypertensive medication and their impact on cancer incidence. This mixed
treatment comparison meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials concluded
that commonly used antihypertensive drugs were not associated with increased
odds of developing cancer. Evidence appeared to support the authors'
conclusions, but lack of reporting of differences between studies and reliance
upon short-term studies may have weakened the strength of the evidence.
