Williams, I. de Silva, D. & Ham, C. (2009), "Promoting and embedding innovation: learning from experience", Health Services Management Centre Innovation in the NHS is now being driven regionally by strategic health authorities. Learning how other national and international organisations have approached, planned and embedded innovation will help SHAs foster a culture of innovation. This overview outlines key evidence about what has worked well and what has been challenging elsewhere in adopting and disseminating innovation. Research Information Network (RIN) report, "E-journals: their use, value and impact" A new RIN report, based on a study by the Centre for Information Behaviour and the Evaluation of Research (CIBER) at University College London, looks into how researchers use e-journals, the impact this has on provision of library and information services, and links with research outcomes. Many surveys have shown how much researchers welcome online access to journals; but the RIN report goes further by demonstrating how users actually behave and use ejournals in practice through deep log analysis of publishers' usage logs. The RIN report provides an evidence-based study to give a detailed portrait of the information seeking behaviour of UK researchers, of how they make use of online journals and of the benefits that might result. Each issue also summarizes a variety of key resources and provides references for further reading. This month's featured resources: Issue 52 (Apr 09) i) Measuring the impact of research: how can we show return on investments in health research? (Part II) Key messages * The Canadian Academy of Health Sciences recently proposed an evaluation framework designed to address specific impact evaluation questions about the value of health research and health research funding. * Among the greatest challenges in assessing impact is the definition of "impact" itself, which can be different for every funding program. Defining the impact of health services research poses its own challenges - for example, it is often not feasible to define ideal policy- or decision-making impacts, since the research rarely yields unambiguous conclusions with obvious application. * Case studies are emerging as a popular method for measuring the impact of health research, since they help to identify the factors that lead to research success. CRD, which was established in 1994, is one of the largest groups in the world engaged exclusively in evidence synthesis in the health field. CRD undertakes systematic reviews evaluating the research evidence on health and public health questions of national and international importance. We produce the DARE, NHS EED and HTA databases which are used extensively by health professionals, policy makers and researchers around the world. We also undertake methods research and produce internationally accepted guidelines for undertaking systematic reviews. CRD databases updated This week (13/05 - 19/05 2009) 53 new records have been added to the DARE, NHS EED and HTA databases. i) 38 full abstracts of quality assessed systematic reviews ii) 15 full abstracts of quality assessed economic evaluations iii) 0 health technology assessments Featured abstract of the week: i) Antihypertensive medication and their impact on cancer incidence. This mixed treatment comparison meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials concluded that commonly used antihypertensive drugs were not associated with increased odds of developing cancer. Evidence appeared to support the authors' conclusions, but lack of reporting of differences between studies and reliance upon short-term studies may have weakened the strength of the evidence.
