1. SSR (a reading activity) Give each student a copy of Choices magazine. Tell them they can read
anything they want in the magazine, but they should be sure to read “Playing through the
Pain” on pages 12-16. Let them read for 15-20 minutes, then give them a copy of the “Playing
through the Pain” quiz. They should answer the questions on a separate sheet of paper and
return the quiz, the answers, and the magazine. Go over the answers with them. They are
marked on the Scholastic Choices paper in included in this folder.
2. Give students 5 minutes to study the pronunciation of words in vocabulary lesson 2. (They
have this material in their vocabulary book and their notebooks). They should take the
enclosed brief quiz and pass it in. They shouldn’t look in their books or notebooks while
taking the quiz. After they have completed the quiz, go over the answers. They are marked on
an enclosed sheet.
3. Students should read the material about Author’s Purpose on page 547 in their literature
book. (The one with the orange cover). They might want to read it aloud. This is review
material that they go over every year. Under Elements of Nonfiction: Author’s Purpose, the
directions say to make a chart listing key passages and determining the purpose. The
directions say they should do this while they read, but it will work better it they do it after
they read. They should hand in their list, which should have at least five items on it.
4. Usually we read the beginning of a reading together, with students volunteering to read
aloud. The students might want to discuss the photographs and the story. If they can manage
an orderly discussion, they can have one. You can emphasize how great a difference there is
