In the beginning of the novel we learn of Tom Sawyer’s mischievous and rebellious manner. He soon learns responsibility when he witnesses Injun Joe murdering Dr. Robinson in the graveyard. Injun Joe blames innocent Muff Potter, which troubles Tom. “Tom’s fearful secret and gnawing conscience disturbed his sleep for much as a week after this.” Tom Sawyer is truly good at heart, even though his childish antics, may say otherwise. Tom’s guilty conscience brought him down to Potter’s cell to leave him gifts. Tom, first hesitatingly, revealed the truth at Potter’s trial. Tom Sawyer couldn’t see an innocent man be charged, so as frightened as he was he had to protest against Injun Joe.
