Name___________________________ Class: Advanced Placement Psychology
The purpose of the AP course in Psychology is to introduce the systematic and
scientific study of the behavior and mental processes of human beings and other
animals. Included is a consideration of the psychological facts, principles, and
phenomena associated with each of the major subfields within psychology. Students
also learn about the ethics and methods psychologists use in their science and
practice.
The maingoals for this class is to expose students to an intorductory college class in
psychology and to prepare them for the nationally recognized Collegeboard A.P.
Psychology exam.
Class Rules and Procedures
After class discussion, I have agreed to follow the class rules:
I. Follow all school rules as described in the Laurel agenda
II. Show enthusiasm for the subject
III. .Take the A.P. test through College Boards in order to earn college credits.
IV. .
V. .
VI. .
Class Activities
IT IS EXPECTED THAT IF YOU ARE IN CLASS, THAT YOU PARTICIPATE IN
EVERY ACTIVITY. These hands on activities are vital for understanding… leave your
inhibitions at the door.
Also, keep in mind that MANY assignments can not be reproduced because of the group
nature of the course, so be careful of your attendance.
Materials for Class
I. Textbooks:
Myers, David (2005). Exploring psychology: Seventh edition in modules. New York,
New York: Worth Publishers.
Hock, Roger, R (2005). Forty studies that changed psychology: Explorations into the
history of psychological research. Upper Saddle River, New Jersey: Pearson Prentice
Hall.
II. 3 ring binder with dividers and loose leaf paper (RVRR’s/Power Point Notes/ Class
activities and handouts)
III. blue or black ink pen
IV. Additional materials if requested (You will know this in advance, and cost will be
minimal)
The resources in the Room
I. The room is set up with you in mind. There are many interesting (and some not-sointeresting) resources for your use.
II. Any book on the shelves you find interesting, please ask and you can borrow it. (Most
of them are mine, and I have been fortunate that they are usually returned without
problems) THERE ARE MANY PSYCHOLOGY BOOKS
Attendance
I. Keep in mind the Laurel High School attendance policy!!!! Also, remember this is
a college-level class; missed days will means missed information for the AP test.
II. It is your responsibility to find out what you have missed. Copies of hand outs will
be in the shelves in the student supply area OR on the Wiki.
III. You will have two class days to turn in make-up work. (Extreme cases can be
discussed.) I DO NOT want to see any work after that time – DO NOT come to me
at the end of a quarter and ask for your make-up work… I will not give it to you. I
have decided to follow this rule very strictly this year.
IV. If you miss a quiz or test, you need to see me as soon as possible to arraign to make
it up. (This is for your own benefit, the longer you wait the less you will
remember.) These will NOT be administered after one week.
Computing grades
IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE CURRENT LAUREL HIGH SCHOOL
GRADING POLICY, 80 PERCENT OF YOUR QUARTER GRADE WILL BE
FROM ASSESSMENTS / 20 PERCENT WILL BE DETERMINED FROM
ACHIEVEMENT GRADES.
IN both categories, grades will be calculated by dividing the number of points
you earned by the total number of points given.
The types of assignments will be assigned the following point values:
 Unit tests and major projects = 100 points
 These tests will be reflective of the AP test format:
multiple choice and multi-part essays.
 Quizzes = 20 to 40 points depending on the number of questions.
 Summative projects = 30 to 50 points (the point value will be
announced, if they are considered this type of assignment.)

Homework: RVRR’s- 50 to 75 points: In each unit’s worth of
modules you must Read, Vocabulary, Review questions, and
Respond in a journal style paragraph. You will be responsible for
following the calendar for these – no matter what is occurring in
school (weather closings are not an excuse for not doing your
RVRR’s)
Lets have a great year……
