Orientation Week: Not scheduled
Classes begin: Monday, January 12th
Math Placement Exam: online; send e-mail to amhumes@mtu.edu
International Student Check-in: Jan. 8 2009, Thursday.
This is an exciting time of your life and I’m sure you will experience some uncertainty. Will my classes be
tough? What will my instructors be like? Who will be my roommate? What is winter like up there? (Lots of
snow) One of the biggest and most important adjustments you’ll need to make is how you study. Most
students need to acquire new study habits and priorities to do well in each course. See your instructor if you
don’t understand something. Each department has learning centers with coaches available to help you. If you
sense you are in the wrong level of a course, see your instructor right away. Do your homework problems over
and over until you can do them on your own without error. Be aware of what Academic Integrity is and do your
own work. Keweenaw snowfall 2008-2009
International students: You cannot get a schedule of courses unless you have math placement. If you don’t
have ACT or SAT scores or college math transfer credits, you are required to take the Math Placement
Exam. To take this exam online
1. Send an e-mail to Ann Humes, amhumes@mtu.edu and include your Student ID# (M#) and your
MTU e-mail address.
2. You will receive instructions and a link. Take the exam.
3. After you receive your exam results, see me in EERC 131 to get your classes scheduled.
International student arrival to Houghton, Michigan is Thursday, January 8th for orientation.
Classes begin January 12th. Give yourself extra time in case there are delays with traveling. Contact
Ann Humes, amhumes@mtu.edu for mathematics questions. You will NOT be able to register for courses at MTU
until you have your math placement.
First-time Freshmen:
Your courses will be scheduled by our Registration Office (OSRR) and available for you to view on the Avenue.
Your Spring courses are determined by which math course you are placed in, so your schedule could be different
than the “Suggested 8-semester plan” you received in the mail.
Read here for suggested schedules if you are not starting out in MA1160/1161 Calculus I.
Transfer Students:
If you have had programming experience, please let me know: jmdonahu@mtu.edu and take the online CS
placement test. Once your transcript has been processed and your record is updated, I will recommend a Spring
schedule and the Registration Office will create your schedule. Please contact me if you need changes or have
questions. Your involvement is necessary to plan the correct classes, so please contact me. 906-487-2232. (I
will be out of the office Dec 22 – Dec 29th)
Make sure MTU Records Office has your latest official copy of your transcript.
Your schedule of classes for Spring will be entered by our Records and Registration Office. You can view your
schedule online on the Avenue. If you have questions, or need more credits, please contact me as soon as
possible via e-mail: jmdonahu @ mtu.edu or phone 906-487-2232.
Students with transfer and/or AP credits: Please see me as soon as you get here, preferably before classes
start. if you need to fill your schedule with additional courses. Call or e-mail me – I will be here most of Break.
Get familiar with General Education requirements and know what ‘HASS Distribution Courses’ are (details below).
All new students: If you do not have Math ACT scores, SAT scores or math transfer credits, you need to take
the Math Placement Exam before you can schedule any Fall courses. The first-year Math Advisor is Ann Humes
amhumes@mtu.edu Please contact her with any Math placement questions. E-mail Ann your student ID # and
your MTU e-mail address to take the exam online.
Chemistry – read here for Chemistry course selection help Scroll down past math info.
Course Placement - Math, CS, Chemistry Engineering, and Modern Language placement information.
Computer Engineers – read your yellow sheet carefully. Pay attention to attachments and footnotes.
Electrical Engineers - You may take CH1100 in Spring or CH1150/1151 in Fall for 4 credits of Approved
Math/Science electives – 5 credits total are needed. You may take other Approved Math/Science credits instead
of General Chemistry, but if you are unsure of your major, it is safest to take General or University Chemistry.
CH1000 is a “Free Elective” on the EE degree. (Does not apply as Approved Math/Science
elective credit) (take Preparatory Chemistry to prepare you for General or University Chem.)
CH1100 – General Chemistry is not required for EE/CpE degrees but the 5/4 credits of Ma/Science electives
are. Take CH1100 if there is any chance you will change your major to another engineering major.
EE majors – read footnote 1 on your suggested 8-semester plan/chart. CpE majors – read the “yellow sheet”
carefully. You may take the required Ma/Sci Approved Elective credits in a future semester in lieu of CH1100.
From ECE graduates: Wish I Knew . . .
HASS Distribution Course List (General Education distribution courses. See below for requirements) FirstYear students can take a general distribution course with an “*” by it’s name, if you need more credits to fill
your schedule. If you already have 9 or more transfer credits of lower-level distribution, see the advisor during
orientation week.

Double Major: Students planning a double major with Computer Engineering (CpE) and Electrical
Engineering (EE) – I recommend following Path A or Path B of the Computer Engineering suggested
plans. See “Yellow Sheet”. You do not need to decide on the double major right now. You have
plenty of time to plan; be sure to see the advisor for planning when you decide to do this.
