Course Title: AP Art History

Course Description: A chronological study of global art history from pre-historic times to
the present. Instruction in methods for analyzing and interpreting painting, sculpture, and
architecture will provide the student with a foundation in understanding and appreciating the
fine arts.
Textbook: Gardener’s Art Through the Ages, Vol. 1 and Vol. 2. Additional primary source
and internet-based material will be provided by instructor.
Class Structure:
Lecture and class discussion.
Assigned reading and essay writing.
Assessment and Grading
Classwork consists of short assignments given and completed during one class period.
They may comprise either a written assignment, impromptu presentation, or participation
in class discussion.

Homework consists of weekly essay questions based on textbook reading, lecture, and
class discussion.
40%
Tests include both quizzes and chapter exams. Exams will consist primarily of short
answer essay questions based on artwork repreoductions.

Essay questions and exams are modeled on the format employed in the AP Art History
Exam administered in May (optional). Writing that shows evidence of critical thinking,
use of art history vocabulary, and reference to assigned reading will receive the highest
grade.

The AP Exam is optional but must be taken to receive AP credit. Find out more at the
College Board website. An after-school study group supervised by instructor will be
offered , time and day TBA.
Classroom Expectations: Arrive on time every day prepared to work. Bring a notebook,
pencil and pen, and textbook. This class will emphasize group Socratic discussion based
on assigned reading. Please keep in mind that this is an Advanced Placement course and
will be taught as a college class with similar academic expectations!
