OUR PHILOSOPHY/STATEMENT OF VALUES IN RELATION TO
THE EDUCATION OF STUDENT NURSES
The School Nurse team will welcome Students and encourage them to
feel part of the team.
Students will be given a named mentor who will work in partnership
with the student and the university to facilitate a placement appropriate
to learning needs and agreed learning outcomes.
We shall endeavour to provide a positive learning experience for
students with regular feedback and reflection on practice.
Students will receive a full orientation to the placement and be
supported by their mentor to access key learning opportunities
Students will be treated as individuals, encouraged to ask questions and
take responsibility for their own learning.
Students will be invited to provide regular feedback and evaluate their
learning experience so that we can improve the learning environment
for all students.
We embrace the opportunity to welcome Student Nurse to a placement with
the School Nursing Team. The School Nurses work autonomously and as part of
a team alongside colleagues from other health disciplines, education staff and
community workers.
Our main client group is the school based population and the wider
community. We aim to involve our Student Nurses in a wide range of activities
that involve children, young people and their families. We take a holistic
approach to the health and well being of the school communities. We are
involved in the Health Promoting Schools Initiative and as part of this we
obtain information for our school health profiles which provide relevant
information regarding the health needs of our client group.
We provide immunisations to school aged young people and also other groups
in accordance with campaigns taking place. We carry out routine screening and
regular contacts with young people for a variety of health issues. There is a
great emphasis on child protection and support of children as part of our work.
We are involved in health promotion activities and as part of national and local
initiatives.
