UNIT 1 - USING A CAMERA

To introduce vocabulary associated with
cameras;
To familiarise learners with using a digital
camera;
To practise taking pictures;
To demonstrate downloading photos.

Materials / preparation:
2 – 3 hours
Photocopy the 5 worksheets, one for each
learner.
Organise a digital camera, one for each group
of 3 learners.
Have a laptop set up & create a file in the
pictures section. Give the file a memorable
name (eg DELFI).
Teacher’s Instructions:
1. Brainstorm different types of cameras. Discuss whether any of your learners
have video or digital cameras. (Note who does & try to have one
‘experienced’ user in each group.)
2. Hand out worksheet 1: learners complete exercise 1 in pairs. Feedback.

3. Direct learners to exercise 2 & elicit the names of the 2 images. Ask ‘is there
film in a digital camera?’ and, ‘what is there in a digital camera?’ (Elicit –
memory card.) In pairs, learners write down as many words as they can
associated with a camera. Write them on the board; check comprehension,
pronunciation & when to use them.
4. Hand out worksheet 2. Drill vocabulary in the box. Check comprehension.
Learners label the pictures then check their answers with their partner.
Check answers with other learners then answer the question at the bottom of
the page.
5. Put learners into groups of 3 or 4 (put 1 experienced user in each group).
Give each group a camera & practise turning it on & off. Instruct learners to
take photos of each other in pairs, groups & using the zoom. Give learners
plenty of time for this activity to familiarise themselves with the cameras.
6. Begin the second half of the session by handing out worksheet 3 & in pairs
learners match the 5 words & definitions in exercise 1. Check answers with
the whole class & clarify any unknown language. Check answer to the
question at the end of exercise 1 – laptop. Read out questions in exercise 2
& learners complete in pairs. Check.
7. Demonstrate how to download the photos from one of the cameras used
earlier onto the laptop while talking through the instructions (without the
worksheet). Hand out worksheet 4, learners read the exercise once through;
now demonstrate instructions again (with another camera) & learners fill in
the spaces. Demonstrate with the third camera while learners check
answers.
8. Hand out worksheet 5 ‘word search’ for homework.
Inform learners that they will take part in a competition. It involves taking a
photo of Inverness & writing about ‘what Inverness means to me’.
