TREASURE BOX OF VALUES
Dear Children,
Winter Vacation is synonymous with fun, frolic, getting up late in the morning, playing
with friends, going for picnics, exploring new places and watching fun filled shows on
television. But dear children, there is a lot more you can do to make your vacation more
interesting and meaningful, along with doing all your heart desires.
Here is a “Winter Vacation Activity Treasure Box” just for you. It will surely mould you
for a better and successful forthcoming year. So get ready for your treasure hunt.
Note:
1. All EVS work to be done in a scrap book.
2. Encourage your children to do the activities themselves and appoint a specific time to
do homework.
3. Students own work will be appreciated.
4. You may do any three of the following activities and show them to us when you come
back to school.
HANDS-ON ACTIVITIES
1. ‘Caring and sharing’ makes vacation fun!
a. Make a parachute Travelling with your family during vacation is a much awaited
activity. Some of you will travel by car, bus, train or a plane. When you want to enjoy
you want to touch the sky and sky is the limit when you wish to fly high! So, with the
help of your parents, learn to make your own parachute.
What you’ll need:
 A plastic bag or any light material
 Scissors
 String
 A small object to act as a weight
How to make:
1. Cut out a large square from a plastic bag/any other light material.
2. Trim the edges so it looks like the shape .
3. Cut a small hole near the edge of each side.
4. Attach 8 pieces of string of the same length to each side of the hole.
5. Tie the pieces of string to the object you are using as a weight.
6. Use a chair or find a high spot to drop your parachute and test how well it worked,
remember to drop as slow as possible.
See what’s happening:
See your parachute descending slowly to the ground, giving your object a safe landing.
Your object is pulling down the parachute while the air is making it fly. Hence, you see it
coming down slowly instead of rushing down to the ground.
For parents:
a) Observing is a skill that will help your child to become a more focussed thinker.
Develop his or her understanding of the way things work.
b) Fix small objects of different weights beginning from heaviest to lightest to this
parachute.
Drop the parachute with different objects attached to it from the same height.
Get ready to observe what happens –
 Which object was fastest to reach the ground? ____________
 Which object was slowest to reach the ground? ____________
‘Together’ we explore
a. Go for a walk in a nearby park with your grandparents and you will realize that you
have been blessed with two of God’s greatest gifts.....Nature and your family.
Look at the plants growing around and see if you can spot any fallen seeds. Now, with
the help of your grandfather/grandmother learn to grow a plant from any seed you pick.
Have fun watching the seed grow into a seedling.
What you will need:
 Seeds of your choice
 Good quality soil
 A container to hold the soil and your seeds
 Water,
 Sunlight and warmth
What you need to do:
1. Fill the container with soil
2. Plant the seeds inside the soil
3. Put the container in a warm place
4. Keep the soil moist by watering it every day
After a week’s time this seed that you have planted and cared for will develop into a tiny
plant called a seedling. Continue to look after your seedling and monitor its growth.
b. Design a pot for your seedling, using old recyclable plastic containers, used bottles,
plastic mugs, paint buckets, tin containers or any other waste material. Let your
imagination soar as you decorate it.
Bring your plant to school in this decorated pot.
I know my city!
a. Find out if you have any post office, fire station, police station, school, temple, church,
gurudwara, mosque etc in your neighbourhood. Visit any four places with your family.

BE AN ECO BUDDY
Dear Children,
Winter Vacation is synonymous with fun, frolic, getting up late in the morning, playing
with friends, going for picnics, exploring new places and watching fun filled shows on
television. But dear children, there is a lot more you can do to make your vacation more
interesting and meaningful, along with doing all your heart desires. It will surely prepare
you for a better and more fruitful year ahead.
A few guidelines for you to be more confident and self-sufficient:
1. THE JOY OF READING: Cultivate the habit of reading books of your choice as
books can be your best friends.
Suggested Books:
 Books by NBT ( National book Trust )
 Panchtantra Tales
 Earth Book For Kids
 Little Feet Little Faces
2. TV TIME!!!!! :
Suggested channels to watch:
 Cartoon Network
 Disney Channel

 Discovery Kids
 Animal Planet
 Karadi Tales ( YouTube)
3. LEARNING BY DOING:
i. Practice tying shoe laces and buttoning up your shirt.
ii. Keep your room clean and well organized.
iii. Help your parents with daily chores.
iv. Don’t forget to spend time with your grandparents and help them.
v. Plant a tree and nurture it.
The earth is a common habitat for all living beings. It is the home of man, birds and
animals, vegetation and other creatures. All living beings depend on various
resources of the earth for their survival. It is our responsibility to take care of our
planet and conserve it for future generations. So let’s include very important 3Rs in
our lives.
Let’s start thinking about what we REALLY NEED and refuse what we don’t. That
way, we can save natural resources, reduce waste, and help the environment
1. REDUCE
Reducing waste includes rethinking what we buy and use, and rejecting things we don’t
need. For example: try reducing your use of ‘single use’ items such as bottled water and
plastic bags, and choose alternatives that can be used again, i.e. reusable water bottles,
cloth shopping bags, re-usable shopping bags and lunch boxes.
Let’s start with reuseA. Things you have to do daily:
 Reduce the use of electricity/water.
 Switch off fans, lights when not in use.
 Make sure that TV/computers/laptops are not in standby mode.
 Minimize the use of ACs and also advise your parents to do so.
 Don’t forget to thank your parents when they do so.
 Carry your own shopping bags.
2. REUSE
Many materials that end up in your bin at home could be reused. Get creative and re-use
old tin cans, containers, clothing, building materials or bags.
A. Joy Of Sharing: Share your toys with your friends. Give your clothes and storybooks
to the less privileged children.
B. My Telephone Diary:
Make a phone diary using papers from the old notebooks. Decorate your diary with
pictures from old wedding cards and greeting cards.
Write phone numbers of your parents, grandparents, two neighbours, fire brigade, police
station, your family doctor, friends, any one agency where we can send our left over food
for the needy etc.
Keep this diary handy with you.
C . Best Out Of Waste :
Watch the programme “Mister Maker” on Discovery Kids Channel and make any one
thing using the waste things.
3. RECYCLE
It involves the collection, sorting and reprocessing of discarded goods to create the same
or a different product. It helps us to protect precious resources and natural environment
for future generations.
Collage Making: Make a collage with cuttings of bags, tetra packs etc which are having
the sign of 3Rs.
