Derogations from Marks and Standards and information on Compensation
2007-2008

Marks and Standards apply although students do not progress.

BA in Applied Languages and Intercultural Studies (ALIS)
Year 1:
ALIS1 students are required to pass both the continuous assessment(s) and the
terminal exam element (as appropriate) in order to pass the overall module.
The following modules are non-compensatable:

Progression from Year 2 to 3
If a student fails a language module in year 2 they will not be permitted to progress
into Year 3, i.e. they cannot go on their year abroad until they have successfully
passed the repeat examinations.

Year 4
All language modules are non-compensatable. LIC 4 students are required to pass
the following language modules:
Semester 1:

The existing derogation for Year 4 of B.A. in Applied Language has been retained for
Year 4 of the B.A. in Language for International Communication programme.
Specifically:
The mark to be awarded for repeat modules is capped at a maximum of 40%. In
the event of late submission without documentation, a penalty of 5% will be
deducted from the mark for each week or part of a week. If the assignment is more
than two weeks late, without documentation, the maximum possible mark will be
40%.
International Foundation Certificate (IFC)
Compensation will not apply to modules delivered on the IFC programmes.
Students are required to pass both Continuous Assessment and Examination
components of the module FC002
Students required to pass both oral and written components of the assessment for
the following modules:
Semester One:

Pre-Masters International Foundation Programme (IFP)
Compensation will not apply to modules delivered on the IFP programmes.
Students are required to pass both Continuous Assessment and Examination
components of the module FC002

Graduate Diploma / MA in Translation studies (GTS / MA)
Compensation is not allowed for any modules delivered on the GTS programme.

Students are permitted to progress to the MA in Translation Studies following
successful completion of a failed module providing that they have an overall
precision mark of 55% and that they have attained a mark of 60 % or higher in
Translation Theory. The mark to be awarded for repeat modules is capped at a
maximum of 40% but the overall grade to be awarded to the student is that which
corresponds to the precision mark obtained.
Graduate Diploma / MA in Intercultural Studies (GDIS/MAIS)
Graduate Diploma / MA in Comparative Literature (GDCL)
Compensation is not allowed for any modules delivered on the GDIS or GDCL
programmes.
Students are permitted to progress to the MAIS and MACL programmes following
successful completion of a failed module. The mark to be awarded for repeat
modules is capped at a maximum of 40% but the overall grade to be awarded to the
student is that which corresponds to the precision mark obtained.
Graduate Diploma in Applied Language and Intercultural Studies (GDALIS)
Compensation will not apply for any modules delivered on the GDALIS programmes.
Graduate Certificate in Community Interpreting (GCCI)
Compensation will not apply to the following modules:

FR572 French Interpreting Practice
RU572 Russian Interpreting Practice
SP572 Spanish Interpreting Practice
RO572 Romanian Interpreting Practice
ZH572 Chinese Interpreting Practice

Marks and Standards apply. Module CM321 ‘Degree Project’ is non-compensatable.
Masters Qualifier in Communication Studies (CSPQ)
Marks and Standards apply.
B.A. in Journalism (JR)
Marks and Standards apply. However, the following derogation applies with regard
to module CM323 ‘Shorthand’.
‘Students who have exhausted all of their four possible attempts to pass the
Shorthand module will be allowed to pass it by compensation at the discretion of the
examination board. However, their class of degree will be capped at a H3’.

An award at Credit or Distinction classification may be considered in circumstances
where the candidate has availed of more than one attempt to pass a required
Examination Module. However, such a decision remains at the discretion of the
Programme Board.
Compensation cannot be applied in this programme.
MSc in Education and Training Management (MEM)
Where a student repeats a module, the student’s overall mark in that module will be
capped at 40%.
An award at Honours classification may be considered in circumstances where the
candidate has availed of more than one attempt to pass a required Examination
Module. However, such a decision remains at the discretion of the Programme Board.
Compensation cannot be applied in this programme.
Graduate Diploma in Education (GDED)
Students must attain a mark of 60% in module ES517 “Integration: Special Methods”
in order to be considered for an overall classification of Distinction or Credit in the
Graduate Diploma in Education.
Compensation cannot be applied in this programme.
Graduate Diploma / MA in Guidance and Counselling (GGC)
Compensation cannot be applied in this programme.

Where a module consists of a continuous assessment element and an examination
element, students will not be required to pass both constituent elements of the
module in order to be deemed to have passed, as long as an overall module mark of
40% is achieved.
