Week 1: Course Intro


Tour the course Blackboard site, and become familiar with the Emerge with Computers
online textbook
Homework: Prepare for week 2:
o Read the the chapter on Digital Technology in the Concepts section in the
Emerge with Computers Online Textbook prior to the 2nd week of classes, try the
Self Quiz on pages that are challenging, explore links and YouTube videos.
o Read the the chapter on Digital Life in the Issues section in the Emerge with
Computers Online Textbook prior to the 2nd week of classes, try the Self Quiz on
pages that are challenging, explore links and YouTube videos.
o Try the practice tests on the chapters that you have read. Practice tests are
accessed from the course menu in Blackboard. You may take them repeatedly as
needed. The score you earn on your final attempt will be the one used as your
grade. Note that real exams draw questions from the practice exams.
Week 2: Digital Technology, Digital Life, and Operating Systems



Lecture: We will discuss the more complicated topics from the chapters on Digital
Technology and Digital Life, we will explore interesting related Web sites, and videos,
and discuss the week's technology headlines.
Recitation: Operating Systems and File Management. Students select either WIndows
Vista, WIndows 7, or Mac OS X and view the associated video lessons in Emerge with
Computers. Students must prove proficiency in at least one OS.
Homework:
o Participate in the Online discussion: Which digital technology has had the biggest
impact (positive/negative) on your life? Why?
o Choose an operating system, WIndows 7, Windows Vista, or Mac OS X, and
work through the associated video lessons in Emerge. View both the Navigating
and File Management videos. Practice the skill taught.
o Prepare for next week's lecture by exploring the chapter on Hardware in Emerge
with Computers and try the associated Practice Test.
Week 3: Hardware and Personal Information Management



Lecture: We will discuss the more complicated topics from the chapter on Hardware, we
will explore interesting related Web sites, and videos, and discuss the week's technology
headlines.
Recitation:
o EXAM: Operating Systems and FIle Management
o Introduction to Personal Information Management, including working with
Email, Contacts, Calendars, and To-do Lists.
Homework:
o Participate in the Online discussion: What kind of computer do you have? Do you
like it? Why or why not?
o Work through the video lessons on Personal Information Management under
Skills > Management Skills. Complete the Assignment 1: PIM assignment prior
to next week Monday.
Week 4: More Hardware plus Word Processing




Due Monday: A1: Personal Information Management
Lecture: We will continue discussing the more complicated topics from the chapters on
Hardware, we will go shopping online for a computer, we will explore interesting
related Web sites, and videos, and discuss the week's technology headlines.
Recitation: Word Processing with Word 2007, Word 2008, and Google Docs
Homework:
o Windows users work through the Word 2007 video lessons, practicing the skills
in Word as you go. Mac users view the Word 2008 video lessons. All students
view the first two Google Docs lessons.
o Prepare for next week's lecture by exploring the chapter on Software in Emerge
with Computers and try the associated Practice Test.
Week 5: Software and Web Research



Lecture: We will discuss the more complicated topics from the chapters on Software, we
will explore interesting related Web sites, and videos, and discuss the week's technology
headlines.
Recitation: Web Research and Assignment 2 - Academic Research Paper
Homework:
o Participate in the Online discussion: Which is better – Windows, Mac, or Linux?
Why?
o Work through the video lessons on Web Research under Skills > Internet Skills
in Emerge. Practice the skill taught.
o Begin working on Assignment 2: An Academic Research Paper
Week 6: More Software and Spreadsheets



Lecture: We will continue discussing the more complicated topics from the chapter on
Software, we will go shopping for useful software, we will explore interesting related
Web sites, and videos, and discuss the week's technology headlines.
Recitation: Spreadsheets - Excel 2007, Excel 2008, and Google Docs Spreadsheets
Homework:
o Participate in the Online discussion: Which is better – Windows, Mac, or Linux?
Why?
o Windows users work through the Excel 2007 video lessons, practicing the skills
in Excel as you go. Mac users view the Excel 2008 video lessons. All students
view the Google Docs Spreadsheets lessons.
o Finish Assignment 2 to turn in Monday
o Begin working on Assignment 3: Spreadsheets
