The SOLENT SINFONIA and The CITY OF SOUTHAMPTON ORCHESTRA Complete to date CONTENTS Programmes & Statistics Works Performed - Alphabetically Composers Conductors & Venues Soloists & Leaders - since 2001 Associated Societies 1 1 The CITY OF SOUTHAMPTON ORCHESTRA The orchestra has its origin in a single concert given in Beaulieu Abbey Church in 1971 by a small ad hoc group of players to accompany the New Forest Singers, the ‘baby’ of Ward Gardner, Medical Officer of Fawley refinery. He was particularly interested in, and a fine interpreter of renaissance and classical music. This group quickly became established as a permanent chamber orchestra, calling itself the SOLENT SINFONIA with Ward as its permanent conductor, giving concerts in the Art Gallery, Southampton. Its rapid success attracted more players making possible entry into the standard repertoire, but the orchestra was no longer a chamber group. The guiding light in this venture was (the late) Alex Young, a Fareham businessman and bass trombonist, and it is to his memory that the orchestra plays with the backing sheets at its concerts. In 1978, by courtesy of the City Council, the orchestra adopted its present title with the aim of promoting concerts of a high standard while maintaining a friendly approach to encourage regular attendance by both players and listeners. Soon after this the Committee took a decision that they would not hire big name soloists, but rather that a professional conductor should be employed, to take rehearsals as far as possible as well as concerts. The CSO logo was designed by competition amongst the players, won by Jane Denley (née Lloyd). The Principal Conductors since that time have been: Jonathan Del Mar 1979 to 1990 Jonathan Butcher 1991 to 2001 John Traill 2003 to date There have, of course, been numerous Guest Conductors. The orchestra has had only two permanent Leaders in this time: Joan Schmeising 1971 to 1986 and Zena Howell 1986 to 2004 For many years the orchestra has had a fruitful relationship with The Countess of Munster Music Trust enabling the orchestra once annually to engage first rate young soloists at minimal cost – while providing experience for them! Several of these were BBC Young Musician of the Year winners and others also have subsequently had successful solo careers. 2 2 CITY OF SOUTHAMPTON ORCHESTRA Compiled by Tony Pill Appearances in which at least part of the Orchestra has performed.
