Polynesians from Tahiti may have arrived about 100 B.C. In 1810 the islands were all united by King Kamehameha the Great. The myths of Hawaii include stories of little people called the Menehune. One theory is that the Menehune were short people who settled the islands early, perhaps Chinese. Larger settlers later forced the Menehune to live in more remote parts of the island. The 1820 census for Kauai by King Kamualii lists 65 people as Menehune. The British explorer James Cook found Hawaii in 1778, but Spanish and Portuguese explorers may have come earlier. American and Europeans came to the islands for business reasons. Eventually they became powerful, and in 1893 they took control of the government. Hawaii became a U.S. Territory in 1898. Japan attacked the U.S. at Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941.
