By Mason Emerson
Alabama became the 22nd state in 1819. The state capital is Montgomery but the
largest city is Birmingham. It has 4.5 million people.
The state produces cotton, soybeans, sorghum, corn, peanuts, peaches, cattle, milk,
chickens, eggs, devices for aero-space and electronics, car parts, hydroelectric power
and steel. It has mines of coal, iron and limestone.
Major Rivers are the Tombigbee, Alabama, Tennessee and Chattahoochee. Major
lakes are Guntersville, Wilson, Martin, Lewis Smith and West Point.
Alabama is on the Gulf of Mexico, and the city of Mobile is an important seaport.
About 92% of the people say they are Christians. Of those about about 80% are
Protestants. About 50% of the Protestants are Baptists.
The state bird is the Yellowhammer. The Wild Turkey (Meleagris gallopavo) is the
game bird. The state flower is the Camellia (Camellia japonica). The state tree is
the Southern longleaf pine (Pinus palustris). The Eastern Tiger Swallowtail is the
state butterfly, and the state insect is the Monarch butterfly.
The Tarpon is the saltwater fish, and the largemouth fish is the freshwater fish. The
red-bellied turtle is the reptile. The pecan is the state nut. The state rock is marble.
Its name is from the Creek language, and it means Town of the Tribe.
The state motto is in Latin, and it means “We Dare Defend Our Rights.” The state
song is Alabama. Two nicknames are The Heart Of Dixie and The Yellowhammer
State.
About 8% of people in Alabama say they had English ancestors, 8% Irish, 6%
German, 2% Scots-Irish, 2% Hispanic. About 73% are Caucasian and almost 27%
are Afro-American.
Probably about 1000 BC Native Americans in what is now Alabama began to trade
a lot with Native Ameicans in the northeast part of North America, connected via
the Ohio River. The trade stopped after Europeans came.
At that time the Native American nations in Alabama included the Choctaw,
Chickasaw, Cherokee, Creek, Alabama, and Mobile. Their agriculture was
influenced by civilizations in what is now Mexico.
The French, British and Spanish fought for land against the Native Americans, and
later U.S. soldiers did the same. The state had many Afro-American slaves. Many
worked on cotton plantations. During the Civil War it was part of the Confederate
States of America.
The Civil Rights movement was very active against racial discrimination in
Alabama in the 1960s. The state often has thunderstorms and tornadoes.
Hurricanes have hit the Mobile area. However, there is rarely any snow.

CALIFORNIA’S PLANTS AND ANIMALS
Copyright 2007
By Mason Emerson
California has some very interesting plants and animals. The
redwood is a kind of coniferous plant. This means its seeds are
protected inside a cone. It is the tallest tree on earth. It can
grow up to 370 feet or 113 meters tall. It can live more than
one thousand years. One redwood is 2,200 years old. Some
flowers grow only in the deserts in California. For example the
sunbonnet lilac is one.
More than 1,000 species of plants grow in Death Valley. Death
Valley also has many snakes and coyotes. Some of the many
interesting animals are the grizzly bear, the gray whale and the
desert tortoise. The Tule Elk was originally found only in
California. The bobcat is fairly common. Los Angeles and
Oakland have very large zoos.

Connecticut became the 5th state in 1788. The capital is Hartford, and
the largest city is Bridgeport. It has about 3.5 million people. Its
abbreviation is CT. Business in the state includes agriculture, insurance
and tourism. U.S. George W Bush was born in New Haven in 1846
although he later lived mostly in Texas.
Other famous people from Connecticut have included Nathan Hale who
was an officer in the Revolutionary War, the abolitionists John Brown
and Harriet Beecher Stowe, and the actress Katherine Hepburn. About
19% of state residents say their ancestors were Italian, 17% Irish, 10%
English, 10% German, 10% French. About 9% speak Spanish in their
homes, and many of these came from Puerto Rico. Many people from
the town of New Britain have ancestors from Poland.
It is a very small state. The White Oak or Quercus alba is the state tree,
and the Mountain Laurel or Kalmia latifolia is the flower. The bird is
the robin. The name Connecticut may be from a Mohican word
(Quonehtacut) which means Long River.
The state nickname is the Constitution State. Two nicknames for people
from Connecticut are Nutmegger and Yankee. The motto is in Latin,
and it means “the transplanted person sustains.” The state song is
Yankee Doodle. Major Rivers are the Connecticut, the Thames and the
Housatonic. The major lake is Lake Candlewood. Mount Frissel is
2,380 feet or 725 meters above sea level.
The first European to explore Connecticut was Adriaen Block from
Holland in 1614. Dutch fur traders built a fort near what is now
Hartford. English colonists called the Puritans came in 1633. Soon
there were many more English than Dutch so in 1654 the Dutch
abandoned their fort.
From 1769 to 1799 people from Connecticut and Pennsylvania
sometimes fought over land in a county on the border of both states.
This has been called the Pennamite-Yankee War. During the American
Civil War from 1861 to 1865 the state remained part of the U.S. or the
Union.

The nickname for the state of Hawaii is the Aloha State. Aloha can
mean love, hello or goodbye. Hawaii is an archipelago or group of
islands 1,500 miles across the Pacific Ocean. The main islands are
Oahu, Hawaii, Maui, Kauai, Molokai, Lanai, Niihau and Kahoolawe.
The capital is Honolulu on the island of Oahu. The abbreviation for
Hawaii is HI. The population is almost 1,300,000.
Oahu, Hawaii, Maui, Kauai, Molokai, Lanai, Niihau y Kahoolawe.
Tourism is the biggest industry. Plantations grow bananas, pineapples
and macadamia nuts. There are also cattle ranches. The highest
mountain is the volcano called Mauna Kea on the big island of Hawaii.
Although Hawaii is in the tropics, snow sometimes falls on Mauna Kea
and Mauna Loa.

Some archaeologists believe Polynesians came to the islands from the
Marquesas and Society Islands about 1000 B.C. Polynesians from
Tahiti may have arrived about 100 B.C. In 1810 the islands were all
united by King Kamehameha the Great. The myths of Hawaii include
stories of little people called the Menehune. One theory is that the
Menehune were short people who settled the islands early, perhaps
Chinese. Larger settlers later forced the Menehune to live in more
remote parts of the island. The 1820 census for Kauai by King
Kamualii lists 65 people as Menehune.
islas temprano, tal vez chinos.
The British explorer James Cook found Hawaii in 1778, but Spanish
and Portuguese explorers may have come earlier. American and
Europeans came to the islands for business reasons. Eventually they
became powerful, and in 1893 they took control of the government.
Hawaii became a U.S. Territory in 1898. Japan attacked the U.S. at
Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. Hawaii became the 50th state on
August 21, 1959.
exploradores espanoles y portugueses tal vez habian venidos mas
temprano.
In 1789 Chinese workers came, and many Japanese workers came in
1868. In 1906 workers began to come from the Phillipines. Today the
ancestors of Asians are almost 60% of the population. About 6% are
Hispanics. Besides English some people speak Tagalog and Japanese.
Other popular languages in Hawaii are Portuguese, German and
Spanish. Many signs are in the native Hawaiian language. For example
on the side of a garbage can you may see “Please kokua” which means
“Please Help.”
En 1789 trabajadores chinos vinieron, y muchos trabajadores japoneses
vinieron en 1868. En 1906 trabajadores comenzaron a venir de los
Filipinses.
Two common Hawaiian expressions are mahalo which means thanks
and wikiwiki which means quickly. Streets and towns often have
Hawaiian names too. Many people who live in Hawaii work two or
more jobs because things are expensive. This is largely because canned
foods, beds etc must be shipped across the ocean to Hawaii. There are
also many sailors and college students in Hawaii.
tienen muchas veces nombres hawaianos tambien. Muchas
a Hawaii.
There are numerous tourist attractions. For example there are the
Honolulu Zoo, the Polynesian Cultural Center, Iolani Palace, Hanauma
Bay, the inactive volcano Diamond Head and Waikiki Beach.
Restaurants include Chinese, Japanese, Mexican, Philippine, American
and European foods. Some local foods are the Hawaiian sweet apple
and taro.
japoneses, mexicanos, filipinos, americanos y europeos. Algunos

What is now Illinois had a Native American civilization called the
Mississippi Culture. The capital and largest city was at what is now
Collinsville. It ended about 1400 to 1500 perhaps because of disease.
Later there was a confederation of Native American nations called the
Illiniwek. Other nations were the Potawatomi, Sauk, Fox and Miami.
The French explorers Marquette and Joliet came in 1673 and Illinois
was part of New France until England won the French and Indian War.
Many Americans came from Kentucky and New England. In 1818,
Illinois became the 21st U.S. state. The U.S. defeated Black Hawk and
followers from the Sauk and Fox nations during the Black Hawk War of
1832.
Abraham Lincoln and Ronald Reagan were U.S. Presidents. Other
famous people who lived in Illinois or were born there were the social
worker Jane Addams, John Deer who was famous because of farm
equipment, the jazz musician Louis Armstrong, the businessman
Richard Sears, the science fiction writer Ray Bradbury, the TV
comedian Jack Benny, the actress Raquel Welch, the poet Carl
Sandburg and the TV hostess Oprah Winfrey. About 33% of the people
in Illinois had ancestors from Germany, about 15% had Hispanic
ancestors and about 8% had ancestors from Poland.

In ancient times Missouri had dinosaurs. In the Ice Age big mammoths
also lived in Missouri, but early humans killed them. Some Native
Americans built mounds of dirt. Some probably had temples on top.
They left artifacts like arrowheads and pottery. Later Missouri had
tribes or nations of Native Americans called the Missouri and the

a small group from Canada which explored the Mississippi River
including where Missouri now is. Other French people came to
Missouri to trap beavers for furs or mine lead.

and the Spanish did not return.
