Diary – Hattie Devens 1885-1886
October 1885
Mon.4, I began Home work. Arose at 7 and took a bath and eat my breakfast. Done the
chamber work & swept up Un. H.’s room & part of ours. Went down town for mother to
Winter St. also went to Butler’s Methodist Book Store & M.W.C.T.U. Rooms. Read
Roman History going & returning. Washed the dishes & chopped a cauliflower &
prepared Celery & H. Radish root for chopping, eat dinner & went with Mrs. Mills to
B.W.C.T.U. meeting at 2. On my return chopped the Celery & Root and helped stuff a
pick of Peppers, then eat supper, combed my hair & went to the C.L.S.C. at the Church.
When I returned, read a book to see if it would do for our S.S. Library, went to bed at 12
o’clock. I also Cleaned the Kitchen & oil stoves & took up the ashes in the workroom
Stove.
Tues.5 Arose at 7, eat my breakfast, washed the dishes, done the chamber work, took up
the ashes in Kitchen & workroom stoves, filled two hods with coal. Helped mother sew
about 5 hours all day. Prepared dinner and then washed the dishes, Got supper and eat it
and changed my dress & went to Class meeting, 5 present, no leader, had a good meeting.
Walked home with Mattie & then darned 1 ½ Prs. Stockings, went to bed at 10:30.
Wed. 6 Arose at 7:30 & prepared account books after I Eat breakfast washed the dishes
filled the hod, cleaned out our stove, done the chamber work, made a pan of biscuit &
two loaves of cake, washed the pans +c & cooked the dinner, eat it & finished the ironing
in the afternoon. Minnie Jaggar called mother out. Prepared supper, made up account
book, eat supper, remade father’s bed & then S. father & I again took the clothes off, &
put the leather bed on top of the mattress; [part missing] the dishes & chopped up meat
hash for breakfast, then read until Sarah was ready for bed, retired at 12 o’clock.
Thurs 7 Arose at 8:45 & made up account book, eat breakfast, washed the dishes, made 2
pans of biscuit, dusted Un. H’s room, read a bok for the Library, done the chamber work,
set the table for dinner, read, fitted M.J’s lining to the goods for mother, set the table for
supper and read in the room with father in the evening, went to bed about 10.
Fri. 8 Arose at 7:35, made out account, eat my breakfast, carried jars +c down cellar &
cleared up the cellar a little, done the chamber work, & then began cleaning tin ware &
then the closet, had dinner & kept on cleaning until 6 o’clock, eat supper in the
workroom. Mrs. Mills called. I was tired & did not go to meeting. Mixed my bread &
washed the dishes, went to bed at 10:30 o’clock. Rec’d a notice from Tremont St.
C.L.S.C. today, that I was to write an essay on Women in Roman Religion, never wrote
an essay in my life.
Sat 9 Arose at 7:30, made out accounts. Eat my breakfast in Workroom, put my bread in
4 pans, baked a cake & 3 round ones, & then my bread. Washed the shelves off & put
them into the closet with powder around, & replaced the things, eat dinner in the
workroom & then finished the closet & done the chamber work. S. had made Father’s &
our bed. Stewed 2 Qts Pears & set the table for supper, eat it & Mrs. Mills called, then
washed the dishes & retired at 11 o’clock.
Sun 10 Arose at 10 o’clock, eat dinner & went to S.S. taught Miss Leavitt’s Class, the
three [missing] said they would be Christians [missing] the Children’s Class 3 present.
After I came [missing] went up to Mrs. Gerry’s. Mabel went into the Hospital a week
ago Friday, the call it Paralysis. Came home & read Chatauquan & eat supper &
afterwards went to Y.P’s meeting, no leader appointed. I asked Mr. Parmenter to lead
[blank] Staid to Prayer meeting. Went to bed at 10:30.
Mon. 12 Arose at 7 made out accounts, eat breakfast. Done the chamber work, mother
made Un. H’s bed, cleaned out the china closet, powdered & replaced the things, cleaned
around the barrel & washed the dishes & set the table for supper, eat supper & changed
my dress & combed my hair & went to the Band of Hope. Mother came over & read.
Went to bed at 11 o’clock.
Tues 13 Arose at 8 o’clock eat breakfast & began cleaning around the sink & window, it
rained, father helped in the morning, eat dinner in the workroom, Addie was down for a
lesson on her embroidery from mother. I got through at 6:30 washed the dishes & had
supper, Sarah did not come home before meeting it rained so hard. I went over at 7:30 to
Class. 4 present. Mr. Winn walked home & carried S’s umbrella. Raining hard. I made
the bed upstairs and ours & done the chamber work late in the afternoon. Retired about
11.
Wed 14 Arose at 1:30, slept all the morning then eat dinner & looked over the stockings.
Minnie Jaegar here in the afternoon, she will send something in the barrel. Went to the
store & wiped the dishes, eat supper & mixed my bread & then washed the dishes &
wiped them and wrote accounts, I made the beds & done the chamber [missing] Retired
about 11 o’clock.
Thurs 15 Arose at 8, eat breakfast, the carpenter came to repair the gutters on the house.
Washed the dishes & done the chamber work, & made my dough into loaves, cleared the
table for mother to cook preserves. Cooked dinner & S. & I went down town about 1
o’clock, drew out our Bank money & done some shopping. Sarah went to the store & I
done some more errands & went to the Public Library saw Mr. Blaisdell for the first time
since he was married, stood copying “Roman books” from 3:30 to almost 6 o’clock. Had
to stand up riding home. Set the table for supper & eat supper & Miss McBride called &
spent the evening, she is going to W [space] to live until New Year’s, going tomorrow &
came to bid us “good bye.” Mrs. Mills was in in the morning. Retired at 12 o’clock.
Fri 16 Arose at 7 & made out accounts & eat breakfast, washed the dishes, done the
wringing & filled the tubs +c. & put them away & help wash with mother, commenced at
10 & everything was hung out & the kitchen to rights by 1 o’clock used the steam
washer. Eat dinner & washed the dishes, mother went down town, Minnie Jaegar came
down & went to the Missionary meeting with me. Came home & made a loaf of cake, set
the table, eat supper & mixed my bread. Retired about 12 o’clock. Took the clothes in.
Sat. 17 Arose at 7 o’clock. Eat breakfast & set my bread to rise in pans. I baked it,
washed the dishes & sprinkled the clothes, cleaned out 2 [missing]. Set the table for
dinner & put it back [blank] times Mrs. Mills called [blank] a double carriage to take
Mother & I out riding. We were gone until 5 o’clock. I then done the chamber work,
swept up & dusted Un. H’s room, and washed the dishes & set the table for supper,
Roasted beef. After supper washed the dishes & darned 6 Prs Stockings. Mrs. Mills
called in the evening. Day came home with Sarah. Retired about 12 o’clock.
Sun 18 Arose at 12 o’clock, dressed & eat dinner. I went to S.S. had Miss Leavitt’s Class
and the Children’s Class came home & done our Room work, eat supper & went to Y.P’s
meeting & Prayer Meeting. Mr. Cole was spoken to after his remarks by Mr. Jones. Mr.
Day, Winn & Fred walked home with S. & I. Retired at 12 o’clock.
Mon 19 Arose at 7:30 eat breakfast & swept the attic stairs & brushed the attic floor, &
washed the dishes & done the chamber work, & put potatoes on to boil. Wrote accounts
& changed my dress & eat supper & went to the C.L.S.C. Retired at 12 o’clock after
washing the dishes.
Tues 20 Arose about 8 o’clock, eat breakfast & then cut over a pile of newspapers, eat
dinner & washed the dishes, finished the ironing & cut another pile of papers. Mother
went down town with Mrs. Mills. Miss Stillman called. I done the chamber work &
changed my dress, eat supper & went to Class meeting, Mr. Archibald led, we had a good
class. We went home with Claudia, Mr. Day walked with us & we gave him some
medicine for a severe cold he has. Retired about 12 o’clock.
Wed 21 Arose at 7:30 o’clock, ate breakfast. Done the chamber work & helped mother
cut up Melons. Washed the dishes & the lamp chimneys, filled the lamps, trimmed my
hab, after ripping it & having mother sew it over, raised S’s hab. Retired at 1 o’clock.
Thurs 22 Arose at 8 o’clock, ate breakfast & trimmed S’s hat, cooked dinner & then S.
and I went out to Longwood, walked through Chester Pk. & took a Longwood Ave. car.
Ellis Berry died [?] would have been 18 yrs old in December, died of a tumor at the base
of the brain, he has been blind for some time, sick a year, was buried today at 2 o’clock.
Came home, met Mrs. Mills in the buggy, she afterwards drove down & took S. over to
the store after she had eat a lunch. S. did not come home then until the store closed. Mr.
Lambert is sick. I did the chamber work & eat supper, S. + I went down to Concord St.
& Newton to see the Bicycles about 300 of them in line. I mixed my bread, retired about
12 o’clock.
Fri 23 Arose at 7:30 o’clock, eat breakfast & cleared the table & put my bread in pans, &
washed the dishes, woman came to wash a little after 10 o’clock, mother used the steam
washer, I wrung the clothes & hung out part, as mother went to Dedham to see Mrs.
Richter, left here at noon. I cooked the dinner, did the chamber work, put the tubs away
& had serval call, Maggie Cunningham staid about an hour. Minnie Lane’s wedding card
came today, she was married last evening to Mr. Mc Nutt [Nult?’]. I took in part of the
clothes & ironed some. S made a pudding & set the table & eat supper & then changed
my dress & went to Prayer meeting. Mr. Jones led, Mr. McDonald present. Mr. Day &
Fred came home with me, Mr. Day has not been out before since Tuesday, sick with a
cold on his lungs. Made out accounts & retired at 12:30 o’clock.
Sat 24 Arose at 9 o’clock, eat breakfast & made two loaves of cake, cooked beans,
squash & potatoes, cleared the table, brushed up the room, done some ripping for mother,
ironed about 3 hours & roasted beef, set the table for supper & ironed some afterwards,
washed the dishes. Mrs. Mills called. Did the housework as usual. Father divided the
bird’s cage for two today. Wrote extract from two books & made out accounts. Retired
at 12:30 o’clock.
Sun 25 Arose at 12:30 eat dinner, went to S.S. had Mrs. Leavitt’s class, the doctor spoke
about my taking Ida Jones’ class next Sunday as she left today. Had the Children’s Class.
Eat supper after doing the work & S. & I went to Y.P’s Meeting & Prayer meeting.
Retired at 12 o’clock.
Mon 26 Arose at 8 o’clock, eat breakfast, ironed some, & looked over the closets in our
room, eat dinner & washed the dishes & went to the W.C.T.U. meeting, Saw Mrs. Kone,
who promised to come to B. of A. tonight. Mrs. Gordon was reelected President last
week. Stopped at Lambert’s coming home. Cooked scrambled eggs for supper & then
went to [missing] Mr. Parmenter called & went over with me. Miss Stokes came to the
meeting. Mrs. Cone spoke. Mr. Parmenter walked home with S. & I and we went up to
see Mr. Cunningham’s house on the outside. Retired at 1 o’clock. Did the house work
today.
Tues Oct. 27 Arose at 8 o’clock, did the chamber work, prepared & eat dinner & went
down town for mother & to pay my tax bill for the year, bought bread & doughnuts for
supper, after I returned went over to Mrs. Cheney’s, Hotel Clifton to return the U. Signal
& subscribe, also sent subscriptions to “W.A. Missions.” Went to Class meeting. Mr.
Powers asked if he could join the Church again on probation. Looked over our toys
upstairs after we returned, retired about 1 o’clock.
Wed 28 Arose at 8 o’clock, eat breakfast, did the chamber work, eat dinner & washed the
dishes. Minnie Jaegar came down to help pack the barrel I am to send South to Rev.
Adams Griffin, Ga. We packed it, she writing the list & she went home. Set the supper
table & eat. Retired about 10 o’clock.
Thurs. 29 Arose at 8:30 o’clock, eat breakfast, cleared the table & went down town for
mother & to see Mr. Chandler. Returned & Mrs. Mills called & Mrs. Parmenter, I went
with her to see the house. Eat dinner & washed the dishes, ironed, did the chamber work
& set the table for supper & filled a lamp & washed the dishes & Mrs. Mills called after
we eat supper, kept S. on the stairs a long time, I came upstairs & wrote accounts.
Retired at 10 o’clock.
Fri. 30 Arose at 9 o’clock [missing] did the chamber work, washed the dishes, cooked &
eat dinner, washed the dishes, brushed Un. H’s room, made some buttonholes, changed
my dress & went to the Missionary meeting at 4:30 o’clock. Mrs. Hoskins from India
spoke. She says Dr. Thoburn has married again & his son has gone to India as a
missionary. Did an errand for mother, came home & cooked supper & eat it, & went to
Prayer meeting. Mr. Pitman & Mr. Winn walked through Worcester St. with me. Mr.
Chandler gave me the freight bill on the barrel, it is $1.42 for 100 Lbs. Came home &
mixed bread, washed the dishes, [put?] beans in soak wrote accounts & retired at 11
o’clock.
Sat 31 Arose at 7:30 o’clock, eat breakfast, baked my bread & beans, swept the stairs
entry & sidewalk, washed the dishes, brushed up the kitchen floor, set the table & eat
dinner, made 23 buttonholes, done the chamber work, wrote, eat supper & washed the
dishes & filled the lamps & came up-stairs & wrote part of my essay, retired about 12
o’clock.
Sun Nov. 1 Arose at 9 o’clock, eat breakfast & went to Church, Miss Terry present, we
went into Sp. St. Bible class, Eat dinner & went to S.S. Took Miss I. Jones’ Class. Led
the Children’s Class & went home, did the chamber work & prepared supper, & went to
the Y.P’s meeting & Miss Prayer meeting. Mrs. & Mabel Gerry out. India was the
theme. Came home & washed the dishes & retired.
Mon. Nov 2 Arose at 9:30 o’clock eat breakfast & wrote my essay, washed the dishes,
did the chamber work & in the evening changed my dress & went to the C.L.S.C. Mr.
Archibald present. I read my first essay, was appointed on a committee to prepare a
program, or order of exercises. Came home. Mrs. & Mr. Mills walked to the door with
me. Retired about 11 o’clock. Un. H. not at the store this week.
Tues. 3rd Arose about 8:30, washed my feet, eat breakfast, cleared the table & gathered
the dirty clothes together, cooked Un. H’s breakfast, basted a basque for mother, cooked
dinner, washed the kitchen floor, for the first time, put the Lye water in a jug, washed the
dishes, & made a stew, set the table & changed my dress & went to Class meeting, 8
present, Mr. Archibald led, explained the Christian’s duty to live up to the highest light
known +c. He walked through with S. & I to Washington St. I washed the dishes, wrote
accounts & retired about 12 o’clock.
Wed. 4th Arose at 7 o’clock, eat breakfast & saw to Un. H’s room & father’s, went up to
Mrs. Hills for mother, came home & changed my dress & made two cakes & cooked a
boiled dinner. Mrs. Parmenter here to dinner & Un. H. Cleared the table and brushed up
& washed the dishes, Mrs. Mills called, ironed until 6 o’clock, set the table & eat supper
& then wrote accounts & to R. T. Adams, Griffin, Geo about the barrel I sent to him.
Retired at 12 o’clock.
Thurs. 5th Arose at 8 o’clock. Eat breakfast & washed the dishes, cooked dinner, made
17 buttonholes, Mrs. Mills called for mother & I to go out riding, we went to Longwood,
saw [Linlie?] & her little girl, as mother stopped there with Harold. I did the chamber
work & washed the dishes. Set the table for supper, ironed some. Retired about 12
o’clock.
Fri. 6 Arose at 8 o’clock. Cooked bread & made a few cookies & two loaves of cake &
three round ones, my cake fell. Set the table for dinner & cleared it to iron. Mrs. Mills
called for me to go to the People’s [missing] did so, we found the Holiness Convention
[missing] next week, so returned, stopped at Lamb[missing] to see Sarah. Came home,
did the house work, set the table, washed the dishes & made some buttonholes. Retired
about 12 o’clock. Put beans in soak. Sent tracts Sou[missing]
Sat. 7th Arose at 6:15 mother sick early & came to call us. I cooked breakfast & cooked
my beans & roasted beef, first steaming it; very tender. Went up to Mrs. Mills after
getting some medicine of Dr. Hammond for mother. Found Dr. Johnson at Mrs. M’s, she
sick in bed. Came home about 11 o’clock, cooked dinner, ironed some black goods for
mother, washed the dishes, did the chamber work, made some buttonholes & done some
sewing for mother, cooked supper, & washed the dishes, dusted the work room, &
kitchen. Wrote out accounts. Retired about 12 o’clock. First W. Signal came today.
Sun. 8 Arose at 9:30. Eat breakfast & went into Sp. St. Church to preaching & S.S. after.
Mr. Stearns led. Eat dinner & saw to our room & father’s. I went to our S.S. & led the
Children’s Class, came home, eat supper & S. & I went to Y.P’s meeting & then into the
Church, the Law & Order League was represented by Mr. Johnson. Good meeting. Mr.
J. Merrill told us he always voted “No License.” We walked down Sp. St. to #30 Miss
T’s lodging house and then home, retired about 12 o’clock.
Mon. 9 Arose about 8 o’clock, eat breakfast & then went down town to pay the rent & do
some errands for mother & Myself. Returned about 12:30 o’clock, eat dinner, made
buttonholes for mother, did the chamber work. The entry lamp exploded unlighted. The
bottom broke & the oil poured out, down onto the floor. No one near. Father, S. & I
went to the B. of H. Had a good meeting. Retired about 11 o’clock.
Tues. 10 Arose at 7 o’clock. Eat breakfast, helped mother sew, did the chamber work,
swept the kitchen, cooked dinner, sewed for mother, changed my dress & went on two
errands & then to Class meeting, after Class S & I, Mattie & Mr. Archibald walked down
to Upton St. to do an errand for mother, then Mr. A. went to the Holiness Convention at
the People’s Church, & we stopped at the Latin School for Lizzie & Claudia & walked
home, retired about 12 o’clock. Mr [blank]
Wed. 11 Arose at 7 o’clock, eat breakfast, & sewed for mother, cooked dinner & eat it, &
did the chamber work, sewed for mother, went to Mrs. Howland’s, Miss Terry’s & Miss
Gerry’s, made a pudding & biscuit. Changed my dress & went to the Lecture on India by
Mr. Hoskins, S.U.I., in aid of the Y.P’s Miss. Soc. Retired at 12.
Thurs. 12 Arose at 8 o’clock, eat breakfast & baked the bread I mixed last night. Sewed
for mother & made 18 buttonholes for a lady, cooked dinner, washed the dishes & did the
chamber work, changed my dress & went over to Mr. Ryle’s to the Committee on Order
of Exercises meeting, no one else went & came home at 9:15 lent Mr. Ryle two
magazines, retired at 1 o’clock.
Fri. 18 Arose at 7 o’clock. Eat breakfast & sprinkled the clothes not yet ironed & then
ironed all. Cleared the board & put milk on to boil for oysters, mother cooked them.
After dinner, I cleaned up the yard, the kitchen & the oven & washed the dishes, did the
chamber work. Read C.L.S.C. Reading about 2 hours. Done some mending for father &
wrote accounts. Eat supper and retired about 9 o’clock. Tired.
Sat. 14 Arose at 7 o’clock, eat breakfast, washed dishes, did the chamber work, brushed
up Un. H’s & our room & the kitchen, filled the lamps & washed the chimneys, cooked a
bread pudding, made a stew & roasted lamb. Washed the dishes & bound the seams of a
coat for mother. Changed my dress at 8:30 o’clock & went through to Tremont St. &
rode down to the People’s Ch. Closed about 9:30. Mr. Hall, Avery, Halliwell & Miss
Collingwood & Mrs. Whitney there from our Ch. Mr. Halliwell & I walked up. Left Mr.
H. by the Square, trying to get a young man home who had been drinking & was
smoking. Came home & upstairs, made out accounts & retired about 12 o’clock.
Sun. 15th Arose at 9 o’clock, eat breakfast & went to Church, eat dinner & went to S.S.
and Sarah did also. Miss Crandell was in Church & came to the Y.P’s meeting at 6. I
held the C. Class. Aunt Nancy here to supper. S. & I went to Y.P’s & down stairs
meeting. Prof. Snowdon of Baltimore preached. Retired about 12 o’clock. Did the work
today.
Mon. 16th Arose at 8 o’clock, eat breakfast & filled the lamps, did the chamber work,
made a stew for dinner & eat dinner, basted a lining onto the goods for mother, washed
the dishes & read a book, changed my dress & S. & I went to the C.L.S.C. Committee
met at 7:30. Miss Boyd Chairman, gave in the order of exercises, Mr. Ryle called for a
discussion, no one responded against it, & it was carried. Devotional exercises to include
prayer. Came home about 10 o’clock, hunted for a piece of satin for mother & then took
the trimming off my hat; & wrote accounts. Retired about 12 o’clock.
Tues. 17 Arose at 8 o’clock, eat breakfast & trimmed my hat, to make it lighter, went
down to see Mrs. Howland, & then up to Longee’s for mother, eat dinner & Mrs. M.
came for me to go down town with her. I went about 2 o’clock, returned at 5:30. We
met Mr. W.J. Smith by Mr. Gee’s & he went in with me. He bought a Syn chronological
chart for $15.00. I went on an errand for mother when I came home, & stopped at H.
Perham’s to see if she could come to Class. Eat supper & prepared my floor to mix
bread. Did the chamber work. Went to Class & came home & mixed bread & retired
about 11 o’clock after washing the dishes.
Wed. 18 Arose about 7:30 o’clock. Eat breakfast & made my dough into loaves,
prepared the rabbitt pie for the crust mother made. Mrs. M. came down withi Harold to
have sleeves altered & ripped one cuff I did the other & mother & I altered them, mother
went to Wollaston Heights to see Maggie Cunningham. I made the beds +c. Darned Un.
H. 5 Prs. of Stockings & he went to New York on the 5:00 o’clock train. I washed the
dishes & set the table, swept the room & made 18 buttonholes & retired at 12 o’clock.
Thurs. 19 Arose at 9:30 o’clock, wrote accounts & eat breakfast. Sewed. Head ached so
I did not do much of anything lay on the sofa all the afternoon. Cold in my head. Did the
chamber work & retired about 12 o’clock. Sewed all the evening. Snowed in the
evening.
Fri. 20 Arose at 7:30, eat breakfast & collected the dirty clothes, filled the boiler & tubs
& helped the woman wash. Cooked salt fish for dinner, filled the lamps, washed the
floor & entry, cooked fish for balls, ironed 6 pieces, set the table, washed the dishes, did
the chamber work, eat supper, sewed a sheet, changed my dress & went to prayer
meeting, came home rested & mixed my bread & washed the dishes, wrote accounts,
cleared our room up & retired about o’clock. There was no snow to be seen this
morning. Fine day today & lovely moonlight night, but a slight haze.
Sat. Nov. 21 Arose at 8 o’clock, eat breakfast & baked my bread, steamed and roasted
beef, made a pudding & cooked dinner, went down town on an errand for mother & while
waiting did some shopping, came home, washed the dishes & did the chamber work &
cooked supper & then went over to the Church Army meeting in the Olivet Cong. Ch.
Very good. Came home & washed the dishes. Retired about 12 o’clock. Took a bath.
Sun. 22 Mother came up & told us it was after 12 o’clock & Ella Glover was down stairs
& could only stay a few minutes, we had her come up (we expected her yesterday & I
swept Un. H’s & our room & the stairs & dusted Sat. but it seems her father is very
poorly, the doctors say it is Cancer in the stomach & he cannot live long.) She has left
school to stay at home until he departs. She is looking very well. After she went S. & I
dressed & eat our dinner & went to S.S. It rained all day, or was unpleasant. I had the
Class & came home, had supper & then we went to the Y.P’s meeting & I staid to the
Harvest Concert, had a seat upstairs as it was full downstairs in the Chapel. Then I went
into Sp. St. Ch. to meet Sarah who had been in there. Retired about 12 o’clock. Did the
chamber work today.
Mon. 23 Arose at 8:30 o’clock, raining all day. Eat breakfast & did the chamber work &
washed the dishes & made button holes, changed my dress & went to the W.C.T.U.
meeting “No License” literature given to me to distribute. Mrs. Rice promised to come to
the B. of H. tonight. Came home & washed the dishes & made buttonholes & eat supper.
Mrs. Mills called with mother’s Y. So’c Journals. S. & I went to the B. of H. Very good
meeting. Came home & made buttonholes, washed the dishes & wrote accounts &
retired about 11:30 o’clock. Rains.
Tues. 24 Arose at 9:30 o’clock, sewed with mother, made [hach?] for dinner, sewed,
collected boxes in the attic & brought down to burn. Did the chamber work & washed
the dishes, filled the lamps, set the table for supper & eat supper, changed my dress and
went to Class meeting, five present, a good meeting, it poured hard. Mattie came home
with us for medicine for a cold. I then washed the dishes & read awhile & retired about
12 o’clock. Rains.
Wed. 25 Arose at 7 o’clock, eat breakfast & cleared the table & made 2 loaves of cake
while mother made a pudding. I cooked codfish & potatoes for dinner, washed the
dishes, made buttonholes, cleared the table & washed the dishes & did the chamber work
cooked supper & ironed a line full & eat supper & sprinkled some clothes & washed the
dishes & wrote a letter to Esther and wrote accounts. Mother has an ulcerated sore tooth.
Mr. Lambert gave Sarah a turkey for Thanksgiving. Retired about 12:45 o’clock. Rains.
Thurs. 26 Arose at 8 o’clock, eat breakfast & made 7 buttonholes. Uncle H. returned this
morning. S. swept the kitchen & entry when she returned from the store at 9:30 o’clock.
S. & I went to the service in Berkeley St. Ch. Snowed & very cold. Mr. Gray preached.
Eat dinner; Un. H. out. Mrs. Mills sent her girl down with a gelatine pudding this
morning. I proposed taking some over to Mrs. Glover. S. & I went over & carried ½ of
the mold & S. bought two pinks 5 cts. Found he died 3:20 o’clock, about an hour before
we reached there, the [sic] eat the gelatine as we urged them to & S. & I helped washe
dishes & iron. Hattie & Charley go to Conn. tomorrow & the rest follow Saturday.
Funeral Sunday. Hattie had come over to the city with Charley & left word with Lizzie
for me. We left when they returned home at 7:30 o’clock. Snowing stopped & the stars
out. We eat supper when we reached home & did the chamber work with S’s help &
wrote accounts. Retired about 12 o’clock.
Fri. 27 Overslept. Arose at 11:30 o’clock, eat breakfast, filled the lamps, washed the
dishes, eat dinner, washed the dishes, washed the chimneys, did the chamber work,
ironed the handkerchiefs, Mrs. Mills called with Harold. Set the table, eat supper &
changed my dress & went to meting. Mrs. M. came to go with me. Pleasant weather.
Walked home with Miss Terry. Miss Collingwood also came with us, someone told her I
was foolish to leave Russell’s & she said I was consistent, she was glad I was. Mr. Winn
& Pitman called to see about the circulars they both will carry with them. I mixed the
bread & washed the dishes & retired about 11:00 o’clock. Sarah had gone to bed before.
Mother out. Father put up the long pipe in the kitchen stove tonight.
Sat. 28 Arose at 6:30 o’clock. Washed potatoes, boiled beef & mother made it into hash.
Eat breakfast & washed the dishes & cooked my bread & cut the meat off the turkey
bones & made soup for dinner & supper. Ironed, eat dinner & washed the tins +c.
Ironed, did the chamber work, & was ironing when the bell rung, I went to the door &
found Gus. Appleman on the steps; he came in & I gave him a lunch & he started for the
depot, to go home on the 5:00 o’clock train. Mother was out & Un. H. I washed the
dishes & cooked sweet potatoes for supper. Mother did not come home till after 7
o’clock, went out before 12 o’clock. The dresses from Uncle William came by express,
two boxes in one bundle for [30?] cts. I eat supper after stitching a hat & finishing the
ironing, & then changed my dress & went over to the Salvation Army meeting in the
Cong. Ch. Mr. Clement is Captain; Harry Young First Lieutenant & Treasurere; & Miss
Richards Second Lieutenant of the Church Army. Of the 325 Officers of the Salvation
Army in the U.S. 225 have been converted within a year. A young man there who was
not a Christian & didn’t know why, he couldn’t see it as they did, but he couldn’t. Mr.
Clement & a young man had used tobacco for 17 yrs. & gave it up instantaneously &
never have cared for it since. Mr. Pitman I pressed to go forward for cleansing from the
habit; he would not tonight, at first said he wanted to get rid of the habit but finally
showed he loved it, & did not really wish to give it up. Will think of it & come next
week. Sarah came in on her way home. I gave three tracts to the young man. “Is your
soul saved? Why not now?” & Getting saved, or a word to those seeking Christ. Had a
good meeting. Washed the dishes & put the clothes in the basket & brought it upstairs.
Wrote accounts. Retired about 1 o’clock.
Sun. 29th. Arose about 11:30 o’clock, eat dinner & went to S.S. held the Children’s Class
and came home, did the house work & eat supper, mother out. S. & I went to the Y.P’s
Meeting & Prayer meeting. Miss Crandall is back in the City to stay & was out. Retired
about 12 o’clock.
Mon. Nov. 30th Arose about 8 o’clock, did the chamberwork, picked up the clothes &
filled the tubs +c. & began washing. Mother went out & stayed until dinner time & I had
boiled all the clothes, she cooked the dinner. I swept off the sidewalk after the coal came
& put in the cellar window, then found I was locked out, not having my key, so after
ringing the bell & Un. H. not coming down, I went through Moores & into the cellar &
pounded on the entry door which was locked. Un. H. then came down & let me up. The
boiler had boiled over & the floor & ceiling was drenched with water & steam. I had to
mop up. Mother put the clothes through the wringer, hung the flannels up in the kitchen,
& sheets on the lines, the rest were left in the tub as it looks like snow but is raining. I
went to the Odd Fellows building to get my circulars, rode down & walked back. Miss
Stokes was with me. S. & I went to the C.L.S.C. Mr. Brookins led, Mr. Ryle absent.
Walked through with Mr. & Mrs. Mills. Began reading a book, retired about 2 o’clock.
Dec. 1st Arose at 8:30 o’clock, eat breakfast & baked the bread I mixed last night, &
made two loaves of cake & fried Griddles for dinner. Made one buttonhole & cut &
overcasted 7 & washed the dishes, did the housework. Addie came in & stayed an hour
mother went out about 3 o’clock, staid until after 10 o’clock. I cooked supper, changed
my dress & went to Class, General Mr. Damon led. Walked up to Mattie’s Aunt’s found
her out, so did not leave her word about a place on Worcester Sq. Georgie C. said she
would take it if M. did not. Came back & went into Sp. St. Church for papers. Mr.
Clement promised S. Had a good meeting. He asked us up front. Came home & made a
fire in our room & wrote accounts. Retired about one o’clock. 25 yrs old today. The
Lord is my strength & Guide.
Wed. Dec. 2nd Arose about 8:30. Eat breakfast. Miss G. Crandall called about the place
on Worcester Sq. She called there. I made buttonholes, eat my dinner & changed my
dress & took the 1:30 o’clock train for Allston to the Suffolk County W.C.T.U.
Convention in the M.E. Church. Very good meeting in the afternoon. I cam back on the
6:26 o’clock train. Mrs. Barney was to speak in the evening, but I had promised to be at
the Ch. Sociable. S. & I got ready, Georgie called for us, & we went over. Had quite a
talk about the coming Fair or Ch. Sale & also about using Tobacco. We walked home
with Georgie, she wants a place to room, wishes we could take her. Retired about 12:30
o’clock. Pleasant.
Thurs. 3rd Arose at 8:45 o’clock. Wrote accounts & eat breakfast. Snowing steady, did
the chamber work & brushed up Un. H’s room, ironed all the plain clothes. Washed the
dishes three times. Put the Chautauqua stand in order, laying by a pile of papers to give
away. Retired about 12 o’clock. S. & I talked about boarding G.
Fri. 4th Arose at 7 o’clock. Eat breakfast & went hunting for a room for Georgie C.
visited about 14 places. Got Miss Terry to give me something for my ear, as it is sore in
one place. She gave me Silica. Came home & starched the clothes & ironed the aprons,
eat dinner & the washer woman came to iron, mother & I cut up one melon & I went over
to S’s after some lemons. Mrs. Mills came while I was there. Looked at 8 more places,
liked Mrs. Lanman’s # 26 Worcester St. best. $1.50 per week with heat, gas & the
privilage of having her washing done. Came home & washed the chimneys & the dishes,
did the chamber work & changed my dress, set the table, had supper. Mrs. M. brought
down a lemon pie, first she ever made. Went to meeting, met S. on the way & took her
waterproof & umbrella, as I forgot to take mine. Good meeting, I prayed aloud. Met a
lady who had a room on Chester Square. G. & I went to Mrs. Lanman’s & then to # 28
C. Sq. Am suspicious the house is not a good one, the woman is so very anxious to have
G. go there, as she has an object in having her come, she told us. Found Mrs. M. here
when G. & I came in, it was snowing hard & quite an amount on the ground. I mixed my
bread & retired about 1 o’clock.
Sat. 5th Arose at 8 o’clock. Eat breakfast & put my dough in the tins, changed my dress
& went down town to pay the rent & do some errands for myself. Came home at 12:30
o’clock. Mother washed the dishes. We eat dinner & crumbed some bread for an apple
pudding & put the chicken in to roast. Washed the dishes & brushed up the floor. Went
up above Vernon St. & did some errands for Mother. Came home & had supper &
Georgie called to say the friends she has been stopping with are unwilling she should
leave now, until she is sure of a place to work; & Mrs. Mills called. G. & I went over to
Mrs. Lanman’s to tell her, & then returned, & then we went over and bought a crochet
hook for 5 cts. I came home & G. left me at the door. Talked with Mrs. M. & then took
my chicken out & put in the pudding. Did the chamber work, mended father’s flannel
shirt & put away the clean clothes & put the preserve in the jars after washing the jars; &
wrote accounts & retired about 2 o’clock. Mended my gloves & filled the lamps today.
Rained & was cloudy until Evening.
Sun. 6th Arose at 10:15. Eat breakfast & S. & I did the chamber work and then went to
the Communion service in the Ch. Dr. Vincent was in Ch. Mr. Hoskins preached a
Missionary sermon. Georgie Crandall came home with us & eat dinner. Went to S.S.
Asked Miss Crandall to lead the Children’s Class as we had a teacher’s meeting. Voted
to have 25 & 40 cts. for presents and no tree. Came home & washed the dishes & had
supper & S. & I went to Y.P’s meeting & prayer meeting. S. led the YP’s. Retired about
12 o’clock.
Mon. 7th Arose about 12 o’clock. Got dinner & washed the dishes & did the Work &
crocheted some. I set the table for supper & baked potatoes. S. & I went to B. of H.
meeting. Voted to buy Ch. Cards for members present 6 times within the last 6 mos. Mr.
Winn & Day & Minnie J. & brothers walked through with me. Retired about 12 o’clock.
Tues. 8th Arose about 9 o’clock. Eat breakfast & washed the dishes & did the chamber
work. Had a fire in our stove this morning. Crocheted on S’s mittens. Changed my
dress after supper and went to Class meeting. Mr. Archibald’s father was sick & he had
been sent for. A french student from Michigan led in his place. Snowing when we came
out. I mixed my bread when I came home, Mr. and Mrs. Mills called on their way from
the Ch. Retired about 12 o’clock.
Wed. 9th Arose about 10 o’clock. Put my bread in pans & eat breakfast & then washed
the dishes & cooked the bread & mixed 2 loaves of cake & baked it. Cooked dinner &
washed the dishes & wrote the B. of H. books up square, cooked C. corn for supper.
Mended father a pr. of stockings. Did the Chamber work, wrote accounts & retired about
12 o’clock.
Thurs. Dec. 10th Arose at 8 o’clock. Eat breakfast, & washed the dishes & cleaned
potatoes & squash to boil when Ella Glover came, only had a few minutes to stay, I went
to Miss Terry’s house & then to the school with Ella & then over to S’s store. Came
home with S. Eat dinner & did the chamber work & washed the dishes, brushed up the
kitchen, & washed the attic windows, & prepared supper, boiled Ham. Eat supper & s. &
I set in the kitchen with father all the evening, mother out. I crocheted & then washed the
dishes & went to bed. Been like Spring all day lovely weather. Un. H. proposed to Julia
Colbath Dec. 5, 1885.
Fri. 11 Arose at 8 o’clock. Eat breakfast & went down town at 10 o’clock. Did a number
of errands, returned at 3 o’clock. Inquired at the College after Mr. Archibald’s father.
Eat dinner on my return & peeled potatoes & cooked codfish & potatoes; & baked
potatoes for supper. Did the chamber work & emptied the ashes from the stove & wrote
accounts & eat supper & went to meeting. Mr. Archibald had been up to the Ch. & left
word that his father was better. Retired after mixing bread.
Sat. 12 Arose about 8 o’clock, eat breakfast & mixed cake & baked bread, did the
chamber work, brushed up the kitchen & Un. H’s room. Filled the lamps & washed the
chimneys. Roasted beef & cooked dinner & supper & washed dishes, mended gloves &
crocheted on slippers. Retired about 12 o’clock.
Sun. 13 Arose about 8:30, helped get breakfast & S. & I went to Ch. Dr. Gracey
preached, the Miss Coll. was taken. Came home after I went into the Sp. St. Bible Class
& did the chamber work & washed the dishes, eat dinner & went to S.S. S. got my Class
money while I led the Children’s Class. Miss Crandall came home with us. S. lady down
before supper, after supper we went to the Y.P’s meeting & to Prayer meeting. Retired
about 12 o’clock. Mr. Jones called on Mr. Helliwell & I to lead in prayer for success on
voting day.
Mon. 14 I did the chamber work & cut on rubber leggins & then went down to the Miss.
Convention in Bromfield St. Ch. Dr. Reid, McCabe & Gracey spoke. Mr. Furness
introduced me to Mr. Davis. I shook hands with Chaplain McCabe & bought Miss.
Papers. Did some shopping & came home at 3 o’clock, eat dinner & went to Odd
Fellow’s building, the Union met in the corner room. I got my ballots & walked over to
Mrs. Edwards to see her, she was not in, walked up Albany St. to M. Jaegar’s & got him
to take Yeoman St. Precinct, walked home & lit lamps & went over to Camden St. to find
Miss Smeiser couldn’t, called at Mrs. Cornell’s. Came home & eat supper & went witih
S. to C.L.S.C. meeting. S. read her essay, after meeting she went up to Miss Smeiser’s &
came home & washed the dishes & when she came went to bed about 12 o’clock.
Tues.15 Arose before 6 o’clock. S. & I dressed, eat breakfast & went over to Concord St.
She staid until 8 o’clock & I went to the store, Miss Smeiser came after 9 o’clock. Frank
b. came up to vote there & as S. was there at noon, wanted us to come out as soon as we
could. I had gone home at noon to dinner & to vote & returned. When I got back S. left
for home & voted before eating dinner, & mother didn’t vote. We staid in the Room until
4:15 o’clock, distributed considerable literature & Miss Smeiser will go again next year if
she can. She came over to the house & went home. Mrs. Perham called at the door with
her baby & Mrs. Mills & Richards came in. I did the chamber work & found our stove
fire was out & so cleared it out & eat supper & went to Class. Georgie C. called for me
& we stopped at Dr. Hammond’s for some medicine for her. We had a splendid class. S.
went home & I walked up with Miss Boyd & Smeiser to Camden St. & Miss S. & I
called at Mr. Smith’s to see what I was to buy for his boys. Mrs. Mills husband will buy
them at whole sale. I came home & we went to bed, after building a fire in our stove.
Wed. 16 Arose about 9 o’clock took a bath & eat breakfast & changed my dress & went
up to order coal of Dean. Had quite a talk about Mabel G. & Class. Cooked dinner.
Mrs. Mills called before I eat it. I washed the dishes & the lamp chimneys & filled the
lamps & tended door. Mrs. Ross came and gave mother an envelope containing $5.00 as
today is the 18 Anniversary of Sadie Ross’s Birthday. We eat supper & S. & I went out
to make our call on Frank Blaisdell & wife. Met them at the B. & Albany Columbia Ave.
Station. We saw all the wedding presents & the house. Took tea there & came home
about 11 o’clock. I had written accounts & done the chamber work before going away.
Rec’d some wedding cake. Retired about 2.
Thurs. 17 Arose about 8 o’clock. Un. W. came before Un. H. & I were up & he eat
breakfast here after we were ready. I went out for cakes +c. Did some crocheting. I
swept Un. H’s room & did the work when they went out & swept the yard. Cooked
dinner, they were not here then. I washed the dishes & did the work. Un. W. went about
5 o’clock. After supper worked on rubber leggins. Mixed bread & retired about 12
o’clock.
Fri. 18 Arose about 8 o’clock, eat breakfast & baked bread & made cake. Did the
chamber work & went down town shopping. Went to meeting in the evening. Mr.
Parmenter has got back. Mr. Day & he walked home with me. Retired about 12 o’clock.
Mr. Day has printed “Questions for self examination” for S. Told Mr. P. of Mabel.
Sat. 19 Aroused about 8 o’clock. Eat breakfast, brushed & dusted the kitchen & boiled
Ham. Washed dishes & emptied stove of ashes. Went down to the C.L.S.C. Class of 87
reunion in the People’s Ch. Pres. Rev. Gardiner presided & Dr. Withrow spoke on
Books. Splendid. Came home, walked down & back, did the chamber work & washed
dishes. Darned two Prs. Stockings. Retired about 12 o’clock. Mrs. Gerry called about
Mabel.
Sun. 20 Arose at 8 o’clock, cooked breakfast & eat. And S. & I went to Preaching
Service & after I walked over with Georgie C. & Mr. Haskard to Mr. Gifford’s house to
see about her baptism by immersion. Bitter cold day. She proposed going up with me to
see Mabel at Mrs. Fox’s. Came in & got warm & then we went over to Mrs. Deane’s to
see Geo. She then came back & we had dinner & went to S.S. Gracie Myers went
upstairs with me to Class, no one else came. Came over to Dr. Hammond’s with Georgie
to see about her cold. Mr. P. walked with us. Georgie came home with us & had supper
& we went to Y.P’s meeting. I led. Read parts of Gal. 2 & 3 chapters. Went to the other
meeting. Mr. Howard led. Mabel went down to the People’s Ch. with Geo. tonight.
Retired about 12 o’clock.
Mon. 21 Arose about 8 o’clock, eat breakfast & washed dishes & cooked dinner &
crocheted. Went down to W.C.T. Union walked, had a warm experience meeting too anti
tobacco petitions walked down to Public Library with book & went to Bailey’s on Wash.
St. rode home & Mr. P. & Day called about C. presents. Went to B. of H. I opened and
began to give out C. Cards when we were called down to the Teacher’s meeting. Voted
for Dr. W. as Supt. Mr. Howard A. Supt. Mr. Babb Treas. Mr. Mills Lib. Mr. Foster
resigned & Mr. Mertz was elected Sec. Went up & dismissed the B. & came down. Miss
Crandall was waiting outside. Mabel G. did not go to Mrs. Dean’s today & Mr. Smith,
Day, Parmenter, Miss C., S. & I went up to Newcomb St. Rung Mr. Cornell’s bell for
Smith, he did not stop there, however & went all round with us. Mr. P. rung the bell &
got Mabel to take a walk, we met them on Wash. St. I walked & talked with M. & we
got her down to Mrs. Dean’s & finally she promised to stay there & we came to W. St. &
Mr. P. & Georgie went home & we came home. Retired about 1 o’clock tired.
Tues. 22 Arose at 8 o’clock. Mother made biscuit & I took the ashes out of the stoves &
did the chamber work. Went up to Church’s to see Mrs. Gerry after seeing Geo. Went
over to Lamberts about 11 o’clock & Mr. P. came there, he went down town with S.
Mabel would go to Class tonight if one of us will call. Mother busy so I cooked my
dinner when I came home, & went back. S. came back to the store about 6:45 o’clock.
Mr. L. gave her $5.00 to buy a Christmas present with. Came home & saw to the fires &
went to Class. S. called for M. & Geo. came over too. Mr. Winn returned to Christ
tonight. Mr. Archibald was very helpful. We went over to Mrs. Dean’s after Class, as
we had promised Mabel. Mr. P. went down town & Mr. Smith & Day came home with
us & in. Mr. S. took home his Class presents. I mixed bread & retired about 2 o’clock.
Wed. 23 Arose at 8 o’clock. Eat breakfast & baked bread & two loaves of cake. Un. H.
cup up melon. Aunt S. is very ill from blood poisoning & may not live. Mother thinks
she will go on & Un. H. said he would pay her fare. I did the chamber work & crocheted
& washed dishes. Eat supper, & Mr. P. came to mark presents. Staid until about 10
o’clock. I cleared out Mother’s stove today & she built our fire tonight, it went out this
morning. Retired after writing accounts. About 12 o’clock.
Thurs. 24 Arose early carried the clothes down stairs, eat breakfast & filled the tubs with
water & then changed my dress & went down town about 11 o’clock, came home about
4:30 o’clock. Shopping for mother & buying my girls Christmas presents. I eat my
dinner when I got home & did the presents up to carry to the Ch. Mr. Parmenter here,
making mock candy. Mother washed & Un. H. & he helped wring. S. came home to
supper & went back, we walked through with her & went to the Ch. service. Mr. Scott
from India made the prayer & Mr. Jones spoke. Miss Field read. Mabel came with May
& I induced her to stay, I had made bags of candy for several & her name was called for
one. We came out to the corner of Concord St. (May Dean, Mr. Smith & I) to meet
Mabel who had gone home for some C. Cards for us. We all called on S. & then went up
to Mr. Mills’ store to change Burton Charles’ present. They walked down with me & M.
came in to see mother, but she was out. Retired after washing dishes & doing work.
Carried bag down stairs for Mother.
Fri. 25th Arose early & got breakfast for S. & helped mother, did two errands & then Un.
H. & I went to the depot with her, to see her off on the 10 o’clock train. We stopped at
L.’s for Sarah & came home, I got breakfast for all then & we eat. I did the chamber
work & washed the dishes & finished Mr. Parmenter’s slippers & he paid me & took
them when he called before supper. I finished Claudia’s apron & Sarah gilded some
stones +c. I changed my dress & went to meeting. Miss Crandall there, & Mr. P. sat side
of her. We went over to Claudia’s with the apron & a stone & then called at Mrs. Dean’s
& I gave her M. cards from S. & I. Came thro’ to the house & Miss C. & Mr. P. went
down. Retired about 12 o’clock. Mrs. Mills gave S. & I cabinet albums.
Sat. 26th Arose about 7:30 o’clock, got breakfast & washed the dishes & roasted beef
after steaming it, boiled potatoes & codfish, baked apples, cooked over the grape
preserves, & got dinner, darned 4 prs stockings for Un. H. & got supper after I did the
chamber work. Swept our room & dusted it & brushed up the kitchen. Ironed some,
washed the dishes. The workroom fire went out. Retired about 10 o’clock.
Sun. 27 Arose early & I got breakfast & we eat it & I washed the dishes & did the
chamber work & put up our bed. Went with S. to S.S. Georgie C. came to my Class &
after went upstairs, Aslop boy only one there, we had a meeting. Came down & found
Mr. P. waiting, they walked thro’ with me & then down. Had supper & washed dishes &
went to Y.P’s & Prayer meeting. Mr. Winn was not present to lead. Mr. Howard led
down stairs. Came home & went to bed.
Mon. 28 Arose at 7 o’clock. Put the bed up & washed dishes after getting & eating
breakfast, did the chamber work & cleared the stove & made a fire in mother’s room.
Chopped wood. Changed my dress & Miss C. came & Mr. P. called, he was going to
Portland on the boat. Miss C. & I went to the Union & Miss Stokes & I walked up to
Union Park with her & then Miss S. came up with me & went home. S. & I went to
C.L.S.C. after supper & Mr. Mooers paid for the Chautauquan for one year & joined.
Mr. Smith bought two Chautauqua Songs for us & refused to take S’s money for them.
She put it in his pocket & he came home with us & gave it to her & started off before she
knew what it was. Washed dishes & mixed bread. Mr. Jones going to leave.
Tues. 29 Arose at 7 o’clock. Got breakfast & baked bread & cookies & cooked dinner.
Mrs. Mills & Miss Crandall was here all the afternoon. Miss C. staid to tea. I did the
chamber work & washed the dishes. Got supper & changed my dress & went to Class
meeting. Came through with Georgie left her, & spoke to S. about her coming here until
Sat. & I ran after her. She will come. Retired about 12 o’clock. Washed dishes first.
Wed. 30 Arose at 7 o’clock. Cooked breakfast & cleared the table & ironed & got dinner
& swept the kitchen, entries & stairs & did the chamber work, put up our bed & changed
my dress & worked on apron. Mrs. Dean called. Cooked potatoes & Mr. Parmenter
came up with Miss C. & her things, he chopped some wood for me, & we went upstairs
until S. came. Mr. P. then went home & we eat supper about 9 o’clock & I washed the
dishes & G. wiped & S. & I made the bed up for her. I built a fire. I made our bed &
wrote accounts & we retired about 12 o’clock. Un. H. went to New York tonight.
Thurs. 31st Arose at 6 o’clock, took a bath & cooked breakfast, put our room to rights &
done the chamber work. Georgie & I worked on apron, I did 9 buttonholes, cooked
dinner & Georgie went down town. I washed dishes, filled the lamps & got supper. S.
came home at 8 o’clock, at 9:30 o’clock we went over to the Ch. to watch service. Mr.
Parmenter, Smith & Day met us outside. Mr. P. & S. set with Georgie & I had a recess
about 10:30 & we went round & spoke with folks. After the service closed I gave Mr. P.,
S. D; & Moores & Georgie & Sarah a card. She gave hers to Mr. Haskard. We all came
through to the house (but Mr. Haskard). Came in & fixed G’s & our bed & retired about
1:30 o’clock.

Fri. Jan. 1/86 Arose at 7 o’clock, cooked breakfast & cleared our room & did the
chamber work. Georgie swept the kitchen & I gave mothers room a thorough sweeping,
moving all the furniture & changing sofa +c. Looks good. Georgie cooked codfish &
potatoes & let the fire go down. I saw to it & made a loaf of cake & she dusted the room.
I washed dishes & changed my dress, put on silk skirt and vermillion basque & G. & I
went up to Mrs. Mills store; through Ruggles St. stopping at Laura Mannings & down to
Bertha Burnham’s & Sarah’s store, & then home, set the table & eat supper & went to
meeting. Mr. Winn spoke for the first time for months. Mr. Parmenter went to work for
Mr. Mills today. He met us in the Ch. entry & Mr. Day stopped & left 50 “Questions
S. had him print for her. I gave a number away. Mr. P. walked through with us. I came
in & mixed bread. S. took a bath. I retired about 11 o’clock.
Sat. 2nd Arose at 7:15. Got breakfast & baked bread & steamed & roasted beef &
potatoes & done over crab apples. Georgie went down town & up to Mrs. Mills & staid
to tea. Mrs. Mills came home with her at 9 o’clock. I made 9 button holes & washed the
dishes & cooked supper & lay down. When they came, I got up & eat my supper &
ironed & then washed dishes & swept the floor & dusted kitchen & our room & Georgie
dusted work room. I chopped the codfish hash. S. swept & dusted the entry. I wrote
accounts after taking a bath. Retired about 1 o’clock.
Sun. 3rd Arose about 8 o’clock, cooked codfish balls for breakfast & Georgie & I went to
Ch. Sarah came late, as Un. H. came home & Miss Colbath called and she was
introduced. Communion Sun. Joseph Cushing called full member. Eliz. Aslop & two
others. Came home eat dinner & went to S.S. had the Children’s Class, full attendance.
Came home & washed dishes & eat supper. Georgie went home with Mr. Parmenter to
supper & they came down to Y.P’s meeting. Commenced at 6 o’clock, closed at 7
o’clock. Went downstairs to Prayer meeting. Mr. Jones preached a sermon at 7:45
closed early with an invitation. Rained going, did not when we came out. Mr. Smith was
waiting for us outside. Miss Crandall, Mr. P. Mr. S. S & I came to the door & then went
up to Miss Smeiser’s & Miss Stokes’. Retired about 12 o’clock. Invited B. of H.
members.
Mon. 4th Arose at 7 o’clock, got breakfast & Miss C. went to work on Concord St. I
washed dishes & ironed; swept our room & dusted & took the covers off furniture &
filled lamps & swept entry & kitchen; & put leaves around our room & tacked & bound
canvas, got dinner & supper & did the chamber work. Letter came from mother saying
Aunt Lois Appleman died Sun. Jan. 3rd at 12:20 o’clock to be buried Tuesday at 2 o’clock
& she would come home soon after. Mrs. Mills came down with books & pin & would
not stay because she was not invited by S. or I last night. Mr. Smith, Parmenter, Day &
Blaisell, Minnie Jaegar, Rose Ingraham, Miss Smeiser, Miss Crandall, S & I present.
Sung pieces, talked, & then had 4 prayers. They went home about 9:00 or 10 o’clock. I
cleard the room & went to bed about 1 o’clock. Unpleasant.
Tues. 5th Arose about 7:30 o’clock; got breakfast Miss Crandall went to work. I washed
dishes & made a cake. Got dinner after doing housework. Un. H. started for Mystic on
10 o’clock train. I darned stockings for him to take away. Ironed & starched clothes, got
supper. Miss C. came back, finished her work today. We eat super & went to Class.
Heard Ch. Army going by. Had a good Class & then all but Miss Bennet went into Sp.
St. Ch. Mr. Archibald talked with two young men & I talked with Mr. Pitman. He
finally promised to leave off using tobacco, with God’s help. Mr. P. & S. came home
with us & Mr. S. had come in but Mr. P. went home. Mother had got home & gone out to
the Lodge. When she came back we fixed Un. H’s bed for mother to sleep in. She came
into our room & told about Aunt L’s death +c. We went to bed about 2 o’clock. Very
warm.
Wed. 6th Arose at 7:30 o’clock, got breakfast & then Miss C. took her things & went to
Mr. Morgan’s. Mother got up about 11 o’clock, she washed dishes, while I was upstairs
doing chamber work & clearing out our stove. I made a meat pie for dinner. Mother & I
washed dishes & cooked berries over, & then cleared shelf under clock. I got supper &
father eat. I had changed my dress & done some errands & after getting supper I went
down to Georgie C’s & then walked home & wrote up accounts. S. did not come home
until almost 9 o’clock, called on a family named [blank]. I built mother’s fire this
morning & our fire tonight. Very cold. Retired about 10 o’clock.
Thurs. 7 Arose at 7:30 o’clock. Got breakfast. Put our room in order, took up ashes,
washed dishes, cooked fish, rice & potatoes for dinner & made sauce, tried on gingham
basque & mother fitted it. Ripped waist up. Changed my dress, cooked fish for supper,
began Course of Bible reading Uncle W. sent to me by mother. S. went to Prayer
meeting tonight. I wrote accounts & extracts from “One More Chance,” sit in the kitchen
with father, mother asleep on the sofa in her room. S. came home & soon after Mabel
Gerry came to see me, was going to go to the Charles River & drown herself that night &
came to bid me good bye. She stood on the R.R. track Tuesday night; Wednesday took 6
Morphine powders & was sick, & Thursday was going to drown herself. I talked with
her, & then went out & told S. to come in, she did & father also, & finally I woke up
mother, & succeeded in inducing M. to agree to stay here, & I would go to the Police
station with her, if she wished in the morning. Had not prayed since New Year as G.D.
told her it was of no use feeling as she did. We talked, read & prayed with her, she slept
with S.; & I in the big chair. Retired about two o’clock. God is ever near.
Fri. 8 Arose at 7 o’clock & got breakfast & M. & I came up & cleared our room & I
showed her things & then we filled hods & washed dishes & she watched father with the
birds & I swept the floor & made biscuit & she washed potatoes & codfish. We eat
dinner, mother out. She said she had something else on the programme that would
succeed. I did the chamber work & made buttonholes & then went over with M. to S’s
store & Dr. Woodvine’s & Mrs. Dean’s & then left M. at Mrs. Dutton’s & came home,
cooked & eat supper & went over to Dr. Woodvine’s to tell him about M. & then to Mrs.
Dutton to see if M. would stay at home instead of going to P. meeting. Told Georgie C.
& Mr. Parmenter about her & we all went up to her mother’ & then home. Mixed bread
& retired about 12 o’clock.
Sat. 9 Cooked bread & made buttonholes, snowed hard & was very deep. Mother stuffed
& roasted turkey. I did the chamber work, brushed up kitchen & dusted, cleared our
room. Washed dishes & cleared the stoves of ashes. Retired about 12 o’clock.
Sun. 10th Arose at what I thought was 8:30 my watch had stopped, bathed in cold water
all over & mother came up & said it was after 11 o’clock. Dressed quick, eat breakfast &
did the chamber work & went to S.S. Had the Children’s Class. Came home & got
supper & eat it & went to Y.P’s meeting & Prayer meeting. Mr. Elliot led Y.P’s. Mr.
Smith walked home with us, after sitting with us in P. Meeting. Retired about 12 o’clock.
Mon. 11th Arose at 7:30 o’clock, eat breakfast & did the chamber work & washed dishes,
took up the ashes & cooked dinner & eat it & went in the afternoon down to W.C.T.U.
meeting. Miss Stokes, Cleveland & I walked up to S’s store & got warm & went on up.
I went to 25 Windsor to see Mabel but it is West W. she lives on. Came home & got
supper & eat it & S. & I wernt to C.L.S.C. Mrs. Kyle has a baby. Mr. Smith, Miss
Stokes & Miss Bolton came to Sp. & W. St’s with us, Mr. S. came to the door. I read
some today & helped mother try to churn some butter from cream S. had given to her.
We retired about 12 o’clock.
Tues. 12th Arose at 7 o’clock, cooked breakfast & washed dishes & cut out aprons +c. &
brushed broadcloth sack from moths & cooked dinner & eat it & father having gone out
& mother, I boiled ham & made two loaves of cake & wiped off walls & emptied ashes
& brushed our room & workroom & did the chamber work & cleared our room. Miss J.
Coldbath stopped here to see Un. H. I cleared the kitchen stove of ashes & went up to
change my dress. Un. H. & father came, father scolded about the kitchen being cold.
Got supper & went to Class. Good. Mr. S. went up with Mattie & Mr. Parmenter came
home with us. I mixed bread & washed dishes & wrote accounts up & retired about 12
o’clock.
Wed. 13th Arose at 8 o’clock, eat breakfast & baked bread, cooked codfish & potatoes for
dinner, changed my dress after doing chamber work & washing dishes & went up to
Dean’s & ordered coal, called on Mary Wilkinson, Miss Smeiser, Louise Cornell & Mrs.
Stevens, did an errand at the grocer’s & came home, very cold night. I made an apron, I
cut out several aprons & sleeves this morning. Retired about 12 o’clock. Maggie R.
called.
Thurs. 14th Arose about 8 o’clock, eat breakfast & washed dishes & made buttholes & did
the chamber work, brushed up kitchen & took up ashes. Washed dishes, cooked dinner,
mother went down town in the morning with Mrs. Lyons. Mrs. Burgess called in the
afternoon. I worked on suit & changed my dress & went up to Dean’s, saw G. & spoke
about M’s clothes, went up to see her mother & then stopped & bought groceries & left
word at Dean’s & came home & then went to Mrs. Dutton’s & came home, stitched on
suit & cut patterns. Retired after washing dishes.
Fri. 15th Arose at 8 o’clock, eat breakfast & picked out 2 doz. clothes & mother carried
them up to Mrs. Hill’s. I put all the handkerchiefs in soak & made 2 loaves of cake &
boiled potatoes & took up ashes & did the chamber work. After dinner & made an apron,
S. went to the hospital with Dr. Hammond to have her ears cleaned out. I washed dishes
& mother rinsed the hdkfs & hung out. I filled our hod & sewed on suit +c. & saw to the
fires & changed my dress & sifted my flour & cooked supper & went to meeting. Mabel
there, on back seat, & Mrs. Mills said someone had insulted her on Sp. St. Came out
with Mabel & thro’ Sp. St. leaving her at Mrs. D’s. Came home & mixed bread &
washed dishes & wrote up accounts & retired about 12 o’clock.
Sat. 16th Arose at 8 o’clock, eat breakfast & baked bread, steamed & roasted beef, swept
the entries & the front stairs, boiled potatoes & mother cooked griddles for dinner. I
made hash for S’s dinner; brushed mother’s Un.H’s & our room & swept the kitchen.
Dusted some & took up ashes & did the chamber work & mother washed the dishes. I
sprinkled the hdkfs & S. ironed some. Wrote accounts & copied book. Slept from 7 to
9:30 o’clock. Retired about 12 o’clock.
Sun. 17th Arose about 9 o’clock. Eat breakfast & then did the chamber work. I went to
Ch. Mr. Jones preached from “Cleanse thou me from secret thoughts.” Miss Crandall
was there & then went home to Mr. Morgan’s W.P. St. I went into Sp. St. Bible Class.
Mr. Stearns resigned today; & Mr. Clement told me Mr. Young & Captain Harding are to
be married. Came home & then went to S.S. in the afternoon & led Children’s Class.
Miss C. came to the house after S.S. & staid until Meeting. Aunt Nancy came also, after
supper Georgie, S. & I went to Y.P’s & Prayer meeting. They met Mabel at the gate &
induced her to come in, & after we went down Miss C. & Mr. P. talked with her upstairs
& found she had something she intends to take this week & kill herself. She came into
Preaching service & staid to the prayer service. Mr. P. & Miss C. went home, & Mr. S. S
& I went up with her, Mr. D. going up at the same time with Mattie. Talked with her
about going away somewhere & she finally said she would wait until Wed. if I would see
about Lancaster Reform School. Mr. S. came home with us, & we told father & mother
after he left us. Retired about 12 o’clock.
Mon. 18th Arose about 8 o’clock, eat breakfast & did the chamber work & cleared the
kitchen table & went down town with Miss C. shopping. Bo’t 8 ¼ Canto flannel for 18
cts. a yd. Returned about 3:30 o’clock & Miss C. soon came from Morgan’s where she
stopped on the way up. She had something to eat & soon Mrs. Mills & Chase came &
Mrs. Mills invited Miss C. to go down to see the fire, burning since last Tuesday, so they
went & Miss C. returned about 6 o’clock. Mrs. Mills says she will not attend the B. of H.
again. We had supper & went to B. of H.; after it Mother, S. & I went over to G. Dean’s
as he sent word he wished to see me. We talked about M. Came home & retired about
12 o’clock.
Tues. 19th Arose at 9 o’clock, wrote accounts & eat breakfast, did chamber work & went
down town to Pemberton Sq. & then to see the fire that has been burning one week today,
& the outside walls are covered with ice many inches thick. Bo’t a picture of it. Came
home & boiled potatoes & made hash & eat dinner & finished buttonholes, & then went
up to Garland’s, Dean’s & to Mrs. Gerry’s to see about Mabel, saw Mr. Stevens about
getting her clothes. Came home & got dry as it was pouring rain out & mended a suit &
after supper I went to Class, mother to the Lodge. We had a good Class. Mr. Day was
waiting outside for Mattie, but she was not there. Mr. D. S. & P. came through with S. &
I. Mr. S. asked if he could go down Thurs. Eve. with me to the N.E. Chautauqua Assoc.
meeting in E.E. Hale’s Ch. on Union Pk. I washed the dishes & S. filled two hods & we
came to bed. I emptied ashes today from our stove. Retired about 12 o’clock.
Wed. 20th Arose at 8:30 o’clock wrote accounts & eat breakfast & went up to 25 W.
Windsor St. to carry M’s skirt & see her. Stopped at Mrs. Dutton’s & S.’s store n the
way up. Doctors came yesterday to see M. & she would not see me, staid for a while &
came out & walked down bo’t cakes & wicking. Worked on buttonholes & did chamber
work & cooked dinner & supper. Addie T. sewed here. I started before eating supper, up
to Mr. Parmenter’s house to get him to carry word to Miss C. to come over Thurs. He
was to meet the young lady down town & go to the Y. M’s C. A. his mother said. I
walked down to S’s store, she had gone home, I rode down to the building & asked for
him, & was given a ticket to go in, & if I saw him the usher said he would speak to him.
It was a concert by the [blank] & was very nice. I stood by the stairs to see if they came
out, but they went out the other door. I walked through to Shawmut Ave. & rode up.
Washed dishes & retired about 12 o’clock.
Thurs. 21st Arose at 7:30 o’clock & Mr. P. called to tell where Miss C. lived in S. Boston.
I eat breakfast & rode down town & left pleating & rode over to S. Boston to 5th St. Cor.
of O. Rode in to the city with Georgie & little Carrie Allen, & got my pleating & I rode
home, washed dishes & cooked dinner & washed dishes & did the chamber work. Miss
C. came at 4 o’clock & sewed until 10 in the evening. I had an early supper & changed
my dress & Mr. S. & D. called to go down to the N.E. Chau. Assoc. meeting. Walked
down. S. came later. We met Mr. Winn walking home, came in & made G’s bed on
chairs & I fixed it over for her twice & she went to sleep finally. Retired about 10
o’clock.
Fri. 22 Arose at 6:00 o’clock, went down & helped get breakfast, & eat it & did the
chamber work & emptied ashes & boiled codfish & potatoes & washed dishes. Mother
filled the lamps & I washed the chimneys. Made buttonholes & then went down town &
done 3 or 4 errands, bo’t cakes opposite, for supper. Washed dishes & set the table &
went to Agnes Law’s for girls’ C. Presents & went to meeting. Mr. P. came in & set with
Miss C. & I. Mr. J. asked me to speak to them after meeting. Came home & mixed
bread & wrote accounts & retired about 12 o’clock.
Sat. 23rd Arose at 7 o’clock, put bread in pans & eat breakfast, baked two loaves of cake,
steamed & roasted beef & washed dishes, boiled potatoes for supper, made codfish balls
for dinner, ironed handkerchiefs, made buttonholes for Mother, did the chamber work &
washed dishes & got supper, father working on tin box. Came up stairs, Miss C. went
home, S. came home & I eat supper with her, cleared mothers’, Un. H’s & our stove out.
Our fire went out last evening. I made it up tonight. I swept th kitchen & dusted Un. H’s
& our room, filled pitchers. Came up & wrote accounts, after washing dishes & wash
cloths. Retired about 12:30 o’clock.
Sun. 24th Arose at 12 o’clock, eat dinner & cleared our room & went to S.S. S. came up
to the Children’s Class & gave “15 Questions,” I gave the Golden Text & Questions to
my S.S. Class & reward cards for good behavior. Came home & did the chamber work &
washed dishes & eat supper, & S. & I went into Sp. St. Ch. Mr. Clement led. Mr.
Stearns preached his farewell sermon this morning. Mr. S. came over with us to the door.
Retired about 12 o’clock. Unpleasant weather.
Mon. 25th Arose at 7 o’clock. Snowing hard, Miss Crandall did not come from S. Boston
until 11 o’clock. Mr. Morgan’s son dead, funeral Wednesday at 1 o’clock. Washed
dishes & cooked dinner, did the chamber work & made buttonholes for mother. Washed
dishes & cooked corn for supper. Georgie & I stopped at Mrs. Lanman’s to hire a room
for her. Cost $1.00 & S. went ahead to the C.L.S.C. Snowing hard & quite deep snow.
Very interesting meeting & good attendance. Stopped snowing & the top of the snow
looks like frosted glass. Mrs. Mills & Mr. Smith came through W. St. with us & Mrs. M.
got inot a car & Georgie got her bag at our house & we went over to the door with her.
Mr. S. came back with S. & I & left. Retired early (about 12 o’clock).
Tues. 26th Arose at 7 o’clock, eat breakfast & made 2 loaves of cake & meat hash, did the
chamber work, washed dishes three times. Swept the kitchen & boiled potatoes, sewed,
& made calls. Mrs. Gerry said she would go down & see about M. being sent to the
Lancaster School. Made biscuit for supper. Stopped at Mrs. B’s on the way to Class, for
mother. Told Mr. Archibald about Mrs. Dutton & he agreed to hold a short meeting there
after Class. We had a good Class & then S. & I, Mr. A; S; Minnie J. & Miss Smeiser
went to Mrs. D’s & waited awhile as she was over to Cong. Ch. finally we went over, all
but Minnie & Miss S. & saw her there. I took the skirt I bo’t for M. as she would not
wear it, & her mother wishes it. Mr. S. came over with us. Read Ex. 4-12 [v.?] Mixed
bread & retired about 12 o’clock.
Wed. 27 Arose at 7 o’clock. Eat breakfast & cooked bread 7 cut Miss C’s pleating &
sewed it & washed dishes & did the chamber work. Cooked dinner & Mrs. Mills called
in the afternoon. Mother went down town. I filled the lamps & washed the chimneys.
Mr. S. called with his pictures for Miss C; S. & I & Mr. Day also stopped here & saw
him. I changed my dress & Miss Willard called. Set the table for supper & eat it &
father gave me a description of Mr. Smith’s character. Then I sewed on the machine until
11 o’clock. S. washed the dishes & we retired about 12:30 o’clock.
Thurs. 28th Arose at 9 o’clock. Raining hard. Wrote a little, arranged Uncle H’s room &
took up our stove ashes & then eat breakfast & washed dishes & put on potatoes to cook
& lay down after meding a pr. of socks for Un. H. Cooked dinner, S. did not come home,
such bad walking & raining so. I eat dinner & came up & wrote up accounts & B. of H.
Books, did work & cooked supper & sewed. Miss Crandall sewed on her dress until 9
o’clock. Mrs. Mills came home with S. she staid until near 11 o’clock talking privately
with S. I came to bed at 11 o’clock.
Fri. 29th Arose at 7:30 o’clock, eat breakfast & stitched until father went out. Picked up a
tub full of clothes & washed. Mother wrung out. It rained so some were dried in the
kitchen, did the chamber work & cooked dinner & supper, washed dishes & lamp
chimneys. Rained in the evening & I was tired & all out but father, S. did not come home
until 9 o’clock & I sat & seweed in the kitchen. S. washed dishes. Mr. Jones was not &
Mr. Smith was out to meeting. Made two cakes this morning, one broke, mother says I
had too much soda in it. Retired at 12 o’clock. Boiled ham for Sunday. Made fire.
Sat. 30 Arose at 6:30 o’clock. Eat breakfast & cleared room. Read some time. Ironed all
the clothes today. Swept our room & dusted & emptied ashes. Brushed up Uncle H’s &
mother’s rooms & kitchen & dusted kitchen & work room; brushed down stairs &
entries. Did the chamber work & washed dishes twice, mother did them tonight. I
stitched hem in pillow case & mended my brown dress at pocket hole. I clarified fat
today & wrote accounts tonight. Mrs. Mills down tonight. Snowing & quite deep
tonight. Retired at 1 o’clock.
Sun. 31st Arose early & went to Ch. Met Mary Young who said she was to be married
Sat. Feb. to a young man from Winchester Mass.
I went into Sp. St. Ch. & Mr. Erdman is preaching there. Came home & did the
work & went to S.S. held the children’s Class. Susie Hatfield felt bad about the boys
fooling. Came home & eat supper. Miss Crandall here & went to Y.P’s & Prayer
meeting. Mr. Smith came home with us. Retired about 12 o’clock.
Mon. Feb. 1st Arose early and did the house work, emptied ashes & filled lamps, found
the can leaked the oil was in & it was sent in to be mended Fri. 5th. At noon received
word that Mabel was at Mrs. Dutton’s intending to start on the two o’clock train for New
York, a man named Harry Goldsmith was to use his influence to get her on the stage.
Miss Crandall went after her mother & I went to the store. S. stopped there & was told
they had kept her from going. S. Miss Gerry & I went to the Rutland St. Home, they
would keep her two years if we would get her there. We went to the Police station twice
& over after Mr. Smith & he tried to get her to take a walk with him. She wouldn’t. I
then went up to Mr. Day’s, he had called with John Moore in the morning & taken some
cards to print for B. of H. [??] +c. gave me 50 cards & I asked him to go to Mr. Russell’s
on [blank] St. off Parker St. He went, I came home & got ready for B. of H. Eat supper
& Miss C. & I went to B. of H. Sarah stopped to see Mr. Savage & he said we could not
lawfully do anything until she did some crime. Capt. Russell said the same. I was
obliged to go down to the Teacher’s meeting to let them vote legally. Came out about 10
o’clock. Mr. S. & S. waiting outside for me. Retired about 12 o’clock.
Tues. 2nd Arose & did the work & cooked dinner & went down town, after going over to
find mother, she did not come home until 6 o’clock. I went into Dr. Cullis’ Meeting. 39
spoke. I spoke to him about Mabel & also told Miss Richardson of the Ch. Army & Lilly
of the Salvation Army. Went into Temp. Rooms & called on Mrs. Tyler on Temple St.
Came home about 5:30 o’clock. Miss C. washed the dishes. We went to Class. S. Mr. S.
& I went home with Miss McBride. Mr. Archibald was at class (general) a few minutes
but went out at once. Retired about 12 o’clock.
Wed. 3rd Arose early & did the work & helped fill three boilers for the washer woman &
cooked dinner & changed my dress & went over to Lambert’s Store, while S. went down
town. I wrote letters. She came over about 6:30 o’clock, I came home. Maggie
Cunningham was here to spend the afternoon. I eat a piece of bread & changed my
ruching & put on my sack +c. & Miss McBride having called for me, we went over to the
store, & S. Miss McBride & I started, meeting Mr. S. near by & went over to the Art
Club Exhibition. Came over to the entry of the Ch. & warmed us & then went home with
Miss McBride & came home. Mr. S. got warm & went home. We retired about 12
o’clock. Mrs. Mills sick.
Thurs. 4 Arose early & did the work & went down town to pay the rent & went to

sewed on my black silk basque. Mr. Parmenter called to have Miss C. go up & stay all
night with Mrs. Mills. She went. I started about 8:20 o’clock for Mrs. Stevens house on
Newbury St. where a Reception was held to Miss McClees who is to commence a course
of lessons on Kitchen Gardening Fri. 5th. Very pleasant evening there, but very cold
outside. Retired about 1 o’clock. Mr. Jones called.
Fri. 5th. Arose early & did the work & cooked dinner & started for the Class about 1:15
o’clock. Class held in the Y.W.C. Assoc. Building on Berkeley St. Came out about 5
o’clock & came home & got supper & we went to Ch. Retired about 12 o’clock, after
mixing bread.
Sat. 6th Arose early & made my loaves & set them to rise & went down to Class
commencing at 10 o’clock. Came home about 12:30 o’clock & cooked dinner & steamed
& roasted beef & made an apple pudding. Cooked supper & ironed. Did the chamber
work & wrote ques. on Kitchen Gardening until I went to bed. Miss C. went to S.
Boston.
Sun. 7th Arose at 11:30 o’clock & did the housework & washed dishes & Mother having
gone up to Mrs. Mills’ Mr. Berry from Westerly called here & staid until almost 3
o’clock. I then put my hat +c. on & went to S.S. S. started to come but fell in the mud &
had to return. I held the Children’s Class & they behaved better. Came home & S. & I
after eating supper went up to see Mrs. Mills. Came down & stopped at the house &
went to Y.P’s meeting late. No leader present & I was chosen to lead. Read Rom. 6.
Went into Prayer meeting. Hattie Perham, husband + baby there. Mr. S. came home
with us. Met Mr. Day & J. Moore on Worcester St. Retired about 1 o’clock.
Mon. 8th Arose early & did the chamber work & swept entries & the front stairs. Mr. Day
called about printing K. G. Ques. Mother went up to Mrs. Mills. I cooked potatoes &
starched aprons & Mr. Day called after the book. I wrote in it the Salutatory. S. came
home & saw him, I ironed an apron & we eat dinner & then I started for the Class. Came
home, & bought groceries, cooked corn for supper & S. & I went to Chautauqua Circle.
Mr. Mooers present. Promised Match came off. No one staid up. Mr. S. came home
with us. I mixed bread & retired about 12 o’clock.
Tues. 9th Arose at 7:30 o’clock & wrote up accounts to date, baked my bread, swept the
kitchen & did the chamber work. Washed dishes & cleaned out the kitchen stove & fried
potatoes for dinner & went to the Class, then walked down town & bought a Catechism
that I gave S. for her birthday. Mr. S. left a lovely writing desk here for her. I rode down
town to Northfield St. & saw Mr. Day about the printing & then came home & washed
dishes. Annie Jorgenson here to try on her basque. I set the table & eat & went to Class,
very good meeting, all but three went into Sp. St. Church Army Meeting. I talked with
three young men. Mr. A. walked through with the crowd. Mr. Day & Moore were there
in Sp. St. S. & Mr. S. went down with Miss McBride. I washed dishes & S. filled our
hod. Came up & wrote accounts. Retired about 12 o’clock.
Wed. 10th Arose early & wrote accounts & washed dishes & made Miss Crandall’s
buttonholes & boiled potatoes for dinner. Mr. Parmenter called to see Georgie, she was
not here & he eat dinner here & walked over with S. & rode down. G. came about three
o’clock & staid until 8 o’clock & went back to S. Boston. Owes $.15 for buttonholes I
made for her. I went to my Class & mother went down town. She was here alone when I
got back. I washed dishes, having done the chamber work in the morning & set the table
for supper. When I copied facts from K.G. advanced book & S. came home, Miss
McBride called, also Mr. Day. S & mother went up to Mrs. Mills’ I retired about 12
o’clock. S. was up at 2 o’clock father said. Chopped hash for breakfast +c.
Thurs. 11th Arose at 8 o’clock & eat breakfast & washed dishes & did the work in Un.
H’s & sewed for mother 3 hours & then boiled potatoes & started for the Class. Returned
about 5:30. Calling on ladies Mrs. R. asked me to have this week several times. Washed
dishes, & father & I eat & I cleared the table & ironed until 9 o’clock. Mended shirt for
father & came up & made our bed. S. made father’s & filled the hod. I emptied tin of
ashes today. Wrote accounts & retired at 12 o’clock. Raining steady.
Fri. 12th Arose early & did the work & cooked dinner & went down to Class Exhibition.
I invited Miss Stokes to go to it. It was raining hard. Water had come into the building.
A number came in to see the Class work. Miss Stokes & I talked with Miss Clothier &
then Miss S. & I rode up Shawmut Ave. Raining hard. I got supper & ironed & mended
stockings & mixed bread. S. did not come home to supper, she stopped to the prayer
meeting, it was held in the Committee room. Took up ashes & retired about 1 o’clock.
Sat. 13th Arose early & baked bread & swept kitchen & entry & dusted. Filled lamps &
ironed. Cooked dinner & S. did not come until late, as she went up to see the flooded
district of Roxbury. Stony Brook overflowed & flooded streets as far down as Sawyer &
Lenox St. She called on Mrs. Mills. I ironed until after supper. Did the chamber work &
cleared Un. H’s stove & emptied our ashes. Un. H. was going to Middletown but could
not leave as no train went through on account of washouts. Tomorrow is the 25
Anniversary of Aunt Lizzie’s wedding. Retired about 1 o’clock.
Sun. 14th Arose at 12 o’clock. S. went to morning service. I eat dinner & we went to
S.S. I held the Children’s Class & then S. & I went up to tell Mr. S. he was to lead the
Y.P’s meeting & then we went around Camden, Sawyer, Tremont & Lenox distributing
tracts. Came home & eat supper & went to meeting, we (S. Mr. S. & I) went home with
Maggie McBride & then met Mr. Helliwell & walked down with him, he gave up his
Class in S.S. today. He needs help. Retired about 12 o’clock. I did the chamber work
today.
Mon. 15th Arose early & ironed, did the chamber work & cooked dinner & washed dishes
& ironed, finished all but three pieces. Got supper & the B. of H. things together &
changed my dress & went to the B. of H. Good meeting. Mr. S. came through with us &
came in & S. asked him into the kitchen to see the birds. He went about 10:30 o’clock &
we retired, the fire went out in our stove today & I did not build it up.
Tues. 16th Arose early & brushed up kitchen & entry & dusted. Washed dishes & cooked
dinner & did the chamber work. Rose Dinsmore & Arthur was here to dinner. Mrs.
Lambert came over in the afternoon, & I made buttonholes in flannel & ripped dress &
cooked supper & eat it. I blacked the stove this afternoon. Mended gloves & went to
class. Large attendance. Mattie, Miss Bennett, Mr. S. & Ar. & I went into Sp. St. Mr.
Day & Pitman went in before we did & Fred & Mr. Winn was there. Capt. Harding
Young was there & spoke. Mr. Archibald prayed. S. came after trying to find the
woman who came into the meeting last evening. I talked with 2, I met one a week ago &
he says he will try to leave off drink +c. I invited them to B. of H. Mr. S. came home
with us. At 10:20 o’clock. We retired about 12 o’clock.
Wed. 17 Arose at 8 o’clock & eat breakfast & cooked Un. H’s & sewed for mother &
looked over the ashes. Mrs. Mils came while mother was in Mrs. B’s. I cooked dinner &
we eat & then mother went up with Mrs. Mills, had my pin mended & left cuff buttons to
be altered. I cleared the table & wrote accounts & did the work & cooked supper &
ripped. Mother cleaned the silk & ironed it & I washed the dishes. S. went out to Miss
Gerty R’s & came home after 10 o’clock. We retired about 1 o’clock. Mixed bread.
Thurs. 18 Arose early & S. tried on her silk basque. I baked bread & brushed up the
kitchen & ironed & sewed on S’s dress, cooked dinner & did the chamber work & sewed.
Mrs. Parmenter called & mother invited her to come down & go with her to the farewell
social. S. bought a pr. of shoes at noon. We eat supper & dressed, Maggie McBride
called here for us. We took off our things in the ch. & saw Miss Crandall, she said she
had been sick all day. Sent Mr. P. & S. out for flowers & wore them, we thought they
went for medicine. Mr. Archibald, Mr. Clough, Parmenter & Smith, Mrs. Mills, Miss
McBride, Jaeger Crandall, Terry, S. & I eat at a table in the Ch. Saw Mr. Warrenton &
talked with him. I gave Mr. Ar. The money for 1 doz. pictures. Mr. S. came home with
us & we left mother & went up with Minnie J. We retired about 1 o’clock.
Fri. 19 Arose early & brushed kitchen & sewed & did the chamber work & took up ashes
& filled lamps & crumbed up bread & sewed. Changed my dress & went to meeting.
Raining hard. Mr. Jones led. S. & I came home, Mr. Day, Mrs. Terry & friend walked
through with us. We retired about 12 o’clock.
Sat. 20th Arose early. Brushed up kitchen, swept stairs & entry & our room, did the
chamber work & cooked dinner & supper. Un. H. went to Middletown in the afternoon
with Miss Colbath. I made my pudding & did some errands & then went down town fro
mother with pleating. I called for S’s gold pen & called on Helen Dill & bo’t tracts. Mrs.
Mills called for discipline while I was down town as Mr. J. was coming to the house to
baptize the baby at 6 o’clock. I went up with it & waited for him to come, but he didn’t
come. I eat supper with Mrs. Mills & started for home at 9.15 o’clock. Walked down it
was bitter cold & I was breathing hard when I reached here. Motehr told me to take some
medicine at once, but I didn’t. I prayed for help & was all right in a short time. I sewed
for mother & washed dishes & dusted our room. Retired about 1 o’clock.
Sun. 21st Arose about 11 o’clock. S. went to meeting before. I dressed & eat breakfast &
went to S.S. The collection was to be sent to Missions $165 was the amount. The
teachers voted to send $200.00. I held the Children’s Class, came home & did the work
& eat supper & we went to Y.P’s meeting. Mr. Clough led. Mr. Jones led the Prayer
meeting. Mr. Des Jardines & Cole was there. Mr. S. & P. went home with Maggie
McBride with us, & then we came here, & they came in & got warm it was snowing
when we came out from meeting. We retired about 12 o’clock.
Mon. 22 Arose at 10:30 o’clock & brushed up our room & put up the bed & dusted &
cooked dinner & at 2:30 Mr. S. called & we went up to see the baby baptized & then we
rode down to Wesleyan Hall to the Holiness Meeting. Heard Mr. Archibald pray. Saw a
number we knew. Came out & rode to Concord St. S. bo’t cakes & we came home. She
entertained him upstairs & I went to Mrs. Lyon’s & then set the table in the work room
with the china set. We eat supper & S. & I changed our dresses & Mr. S. S. & I went to
the S.S. Farewell to Mr. Jones. Had a good time. Mrs. Mills & Mr. P. & I walked
together home & Mr. S. & S. & mother & Mrs. Chase. Mrs. N. & Mr. P. rode home &
Mr. S. s. & I walked up to Camden St. to meet mother but did not see her. He came in &
talked here awhile & mother came upstairs. He went home & we changed the furniture
& retired about 1 o’clock.
Tues. 23rd Arose early & eat breakfast & washed china & took up ashes from 3 stoves &
put up our bed & made Un. H’s bed & brushed the carpet. Washed the dishes & cooked
dinner & put up the table & boiled ham & boned it. Washed out the tablecloth & ironed
it. I showed Mrs. Mills the Album. She went down town with mother about 12 o’clock.
Mother returned about 5 o’clock. I washed out dish towels & filled the lamps & washed
chimneys. Swept the kitchen & entry & wrote accounts. Set the table for supper & made
4 buttonholes & mended gloves & changed my dress. I remade our fire as it went out this
afternoon; did not light it until we came home. I went to Class & then into Sp. St. Ch.
The two young men have not drank this past week, one says. We left Miss Sweiser at the
corner & walked down with May Dean. Mr. S. came home with us. I put our bed out &
S. & I made it up & I wrote accounts & retired about 12 o’clock.
Wed. 24th Put up our bed & did the chamber work & cooked dinner. Made buttonholes &
cooked supper & eat it & made another set of buttonholes & then mixed bread. Mrs.
Mills called in the evening. S. did not come home until after 8 o’clock. I put our bed out
& made it & we retired about 1 o’clock.
Thurs. 25 Arose about 8 o’clock & cooked bread & did the chamber work & put up our
bed. Snowing & raining. Sewed in the afternoon & Maggie Cunningham called. I
washed dishes & we eat supper. S. came home & got ready & we went over to the
C.L.S.C. at the Ch. as we could not hold it Monday evening. I think many forgot it.
Small attendance. Dr. Woodvine defined conscience as that quality of the mind that
keenly recognizes the difference between good & evil. Legislative side of mind.
Examines the pros and cons. The judicial side (the conscience) decides the right &
wrong, but above either the governor (the will) decides what shall be done. Prof. Bowen
defines knowledge as a certainty that our conceptions correspond to the truth. Came
through with MissesStokes & Bolton. Mr. S. not out. Retired about 12 o’clock after
putting our bed out.
Fri. 26th Arose about 9 o’clock & put our room to rights, brushing & dusting it. Took up
ashes, snowing & blowing hard. Sewed for mother. Boiled codfish & potatoes, &
washed dishes & set the table for dinner, eat. Filled lamps & brushed kitchen &
workroom floors. Did sewing & then did the chamber work & washed dishes, set the
table & eat supper. Mother & I went through Worcester St. Blowing a gale of wind. She
took a car down to Parker Hall & I went into Ch. The meeting was held in the
Committee room. Mr. Hoskins led. 18 present. Spoke of revival service being held in
S.S. Came through C. St. with Miss Terry. Came home & I made our bed up & then
wrote accounts, & retired about 12 o’clock.
Sat. 27th. Arose at 8 o’clock, eat breakfast & washed out handkerchiefs & went down
town for mother, very cold. Came home & cooked dinner & washed dishes, steamed &
roasted beef & swept kitchen, put our room to rights early in the morning & did the
chamber work. Brushed & dusted our room. Sewed for mother & made buttonholes in
my flannel. Dusted workroom & kitchen. Took up ashes & filled three hods with coal.
Ironed handkerchiefs. Cooked supper & father & I eat. Mother went to a concert with
Un. H. & friends & S. did not come home, so cold Mr. L. asked her in to his house to
supper. I mended clothes & made up our bed. Wrote accounts & retired about 12
o’clock. Mrs. Mills & Harold called today.
Sun. 28 Arose about 12 o’clock eat dinner & cleared our room & did the chamber work
& washed dishes. Went to S.S. Mr. Hoskins & Scott spoke to the children & urged them
to be Christians my 5 girls raised their hands & 3 went forward. I held the Children’s
Class. Miss Terry came up. S. sent her, as Mr. S. went home with S. I came home &
when they had picked out the cards for Miss Blanchor he went home. We eat supper &
went to Y.P’s meeting. Mr. Henck led. Went down stairs. Mr. Scott gave a missionary
address on India. Mr. S. came home with us & came in for a while. When he went I
made up the bed & we retired about 1 o’clock.
Mon. Mar. 1 Arose early, mother went into Mexican minister’s house to work. I did the
chamber work & put up our bed & looked over cards in my drawer, Alice Howland
called for pledge cards, came up stairs. Then afterwards Mrs. Mills came, I cooked
dinner & S. came home & eat & after dinner Julia Burgess called as I was washing
dishes, staid until 3 o’clock. Then Mrs. M. & I carried picture plates to mother & took a
Shawmut Ave. car & rode down town, went into Holiness meeting. Then to W.C.T.U.
rooms & bo’t books & then into Jordan’s & took a car up. I got out at Sp. St. & went into
Mrs. Hoskin’s, she gave me 2 curiosities from India & I spoke of sending Bible verse
cards. Came home & set the table & got the B. of H. things together & S. & I went over.
Very cold there. Mr. S. came home & came in with us & got warm. When he left we
made up bed & retired about 12 o’clock. Mixed bread.
Tues. 2nd. Baked bread & made buttonholes. Did the chamber work & put up bed.
Brushed up kitchen, took up ashes. Mother into Chester Sq. working. Mrs. Flanders
called. Went to Class. Dr. W. led. Mr. A. came for a short time & then went into Sp. St.
&home. After class Mr. Parmenter, Mr. S., S. & I went into Sp. St. Ch. I talked with the
young men, friends of Frank Nugent. Came home & Mr. S. & P. came in & staid awhile
& after they went I made up bed & we retired about 12 o’clock.
Wed. 3rd. Arose early, made buttonholes & sewed, did the chamber work & put up bed.
Brushed up kitchen & filled lamps & washed chimneys. Washed dishes +c. Aunt Nancy
called in the evening. I had picked up 2 doz. pieces to be carried to be washed. At 7.30
o’clock I went into Mrs. Duttons to meet Mr. S. & S. & we had a prayer meeting & came
home as Mrs. Dean came there. Aunt N. came upstairs with us while Mr. S. picked out
his Golden Texts. Mrs. Gerry called. Mrs. Dutton told Mabel what we were going to do
with her, was the reason she would not see me. Aunt N. went up with mother & mother
went to the washerwoman’s. When Mr. S. had his cards I read in the Chautauquan &
then he went & we made up the bed & retired about 12 o’clock.
Thurs. 4th. Arose early & mother went into Chester Sq. I did the chamber work & S. sent
for me to come over at 12 o’clock to take her place while she went down town. I had
darned 2 prs. Stockings & I made S.’s bed shows in the store & finished mine & sewed
one on, lent Mrs. L. one. I went home to dinner & then back. S. did not come to the
store again, & at 6:30 o’clock Mr. L. said I could go home as Mr. B. had the evening off.
I had counted the money & so left. I found the kitchen was very hot & cooled it off &
washed dishes & father came. We had supper & I went to bed at 8:30 o’clock. Was
awakened about 12 o’clock by mother & S. talking, S. was not in bed & mother had just
come from Lynn.
Fri. 5th. Arose early & took a bath & brushed our room. Eat breakfast & took up ashes &
brushed up work room & swept kitchen. Cooked dinner & took kup ashes in work room
& swept 2 entries & the stairs down & cleared our room & did the chamber work & then
swept Un. H’s room thoroughly & dusted it & our room & then washed dishes &
chimneys. Filled the lamps this morning. Cooked supper & eat it & changed my dress &
went to meeting. Dr. W. led. Miss McBride came home with me & took her book & told
me next week she goes to Cambridge as an Assistant in Kindergarten work. Mrs. M. was
here & I mixed my bread & then S. & I came to bed. I made it up before going to
meeting. Retired about 11 o’clock.
Sat. 6th. Arose at 8 o’clock. Baked bread & steamed & roasted beef. Made two loaves
of cake & baked apples. Boiled turnips, squash & potatoes & filled two lamps & washed
chimneys & dishes, brushed our room & dusted ours, Un. H’s & the workroom, did the
chamber work. Swept the kitchen & dusted it. Mrs. M. called in the evening. Mother
did not come until 10 o’clock. Mrs. Hills came with the clothes & I sorted them. Wrote
accounts & retired about 12 o’clock.
Sun. 7th. Arose at 9 o’clock, dressed & put the bed to air, eat breakfast & S. & I went to
Ch. Father went down to Music Hall to see Downs. He said afterwards the man was a
hypocrite. Bishop Foster preached in our Ch. Came home to dinner & did the chamber
work & then went to S.S. Mrs. Hoskins led S.S. Prayer meeting. I led the Children’s
Class. Came home & set the table for supper & Father S. & I eat. Mother had gone out.
S. & I went to Y.P’s meeting. Mr. Dean led. Bishop Foster preached in the Chapel. Mr.
Smith & Parmenter & Mrs. Mills came through with us & Mr. P. & Mrs. M. rode up &
Mr. S. came in. Went about 11 o’clock & we made up the bed & I retired about 12
o’clock.
Mon. 8th. Arose about 10 o’clock & eat breakfast & took up ashes & did the chamber
work & put our room to rights & mended clothes. Cooked dinner & read “The Youth.”
Miss Willard called about Mabel. Got supper ready & eat & then Mrs. M. called for us &
S. & I went over with her to the C.L.S.C. I was appointed Chairman of Committee on
badges, with Mrs. Howard & Mrs. Clough. Mrs. M. left is at the door, & Mr. S. came in
& staid awhile with S. I came in & spoke about going to see Mr. Day about printing the
badges. He & S. came out & we went to Mr. Days & then came home. Mr. S. did not
come in again. We put up our bed & retired about 12 o’clock.
Tues. 9th. I arose at 7 o’clock & eat breakfast & put our bed to air & then went up to
Davis’ Printing office on Camden St. & then rode down town. Went to Howard’s & to
Brown Lard’s & into two printing office on Rilby St. & back to Howard’s. Miss H. & I
went to Summer St. & bought a 10 yd. piece of white satin 2 in. ribbon for $2.00 & then
left it to be cut & printed on Bromfield St. #25. I did errands for mother, & went to Pub.
Library & took out “Kitchen Garden” by Emily Huntington. Rode home & eat dinner &
did the chamber work & made buttonholes. Took up ashes & washed the dishes &
brushed up kitchen. Eat supper & went to Class. Set out at 8.45 & we came home. Mr.
S. with us. He staid until 10 o’clock & then we made up the bed & I wrote accounts &
retired about 11 o’clock.
Wed. 10th. Arose at 7.30 o’clock, dressed & eat breakfast, brought up tub & put on
boiler, mother filled it, & went out to work for the day. I soaped the clothes & put them
in, the woman came to wash, I wrung the clothes through the Wringer & hung all of them
out, & took in as they dried. Washed dishes & cooked potatoes & meat for dinner, eat in
the workroom. I was busy with the washing until after 6.30 o’clock, stopping only when
Mrs. Burgess called. The woman went at 6.30 o’clock, I folded the dry clothes into the
basket & carried it down stairs. The woman let the fire out once & I had to go down
cellar & split wood & rake the coals & ashes down & build a new fire. I set the supper
table & father, S., & I eat supper & then S. helped me with the chamber work & I then
undressed & went to bed after writing accounts. Mother did not come home until late in
the evening. Mr. S. gave $2.00 to send Ms. H’s box South.
Thurs. 11th. Arose early & eat breakfast & put our bed up & went over to Dr. Hammonds
& left word I would like to have her go to the hospital with me to have my ears washed
out, as the wax has hardened so I cannot hear plain. Came home & did the chamber work
& went over to Jennie Saunders a S.S. scholar, then down to the dentist’s made an
agreement to go Friday, at 9 o’clock to have my teeth filled, called on Worcester St. on
my way back & also on Mrs. Rice. Bo’t groceries in the store & came home. I cut &
overcasted 58 C.L.S.C. badges, they cost $4.75 the ribbon was $2.00 & the lettering
$2.75 mother helped. Then I washed dishes & eat supper & went over to the C.L.S.C.
Social at 6:30 o’clock. New England Assoc. met in the Ch. Ella Glover came over,
having stopped at the house & eat supper. S. did not come until near 8 o’clock, Mr. S.
called for her then. Miss Pike & sister was there. Miss Evans & Miss Bots were not. At
7:45 o’clock we went into the Ch. & listened to singing & readings. I went out & saw
Miss Glover into a car & then mother & I, Mr. S. & S. walked home. He came in for a
while, he has a severe cold. Then S. & I made up the bed & retired about 12 o’clock.
Fri. 12th. I cleared our stove of ashes last night so as not to do it in the morning. I arose
early & eat breakfast & went to Dr. Balls had three teeth filled & all cleaned, stopped at
Lambert’s on the way back & bought vegetables & came home & cleaned them & made a
soup & boiled S. Potatoes, went over to Lambert’s after white potatoes & cleaned & put
them into soup. Mrs. Mills called. Un. H., S. & I eat dinner & then I did the work in the
kitchen & Dr. H. called for me & we went to the hospital, rather damp. Came home &
did the house work & then went out to Mrs. Quigley’s with bill & carried Mrs. Connors
home. Raining hard. I came home & found father & Un. H. eating supper. I eat & then
washed dishes & took a bath after I mixed my bread. I retired about 10 o’clock.
Sat. 13th. I arose early & baked bread & swept the kitchen & read papers & cooked
dinner & ironed. Steamed & roasted beef & brushed Un. H’s & our room & did the
chamber work & ironed until about 7.30 o’clock. I got supper & eat. Un. H. has a cold
in his head & said Miss Colbath & sister might come over to see mother about work.
After they came ( put our bed up & then went in to see them as mother was not at home
& did not come until after they went. It was snowing. I asked them into our room &
showed them albums & cabinet. When they went I dusted all our rooms & washed dishes
& brushed up kitchen again & retired about 12 o’clock.
Sun. 14th. Arose about 7.30 o’clock & eat breakfast & went to Ch. Mr. Hood of Dr.
Dunn’s Ch. preached. Came through Concord St. with S. & Miss McBride, she likes her
kindergarten work in Cambridge. It seems her mother was a Roman Catholic & her
father a Protestant. S. & I did the chamber work & mother washed the dishes. We put up
our bed. We went to S.S. & I led the Children’s Class & came home. Ella Glover was
here & I got supper & Father & we eat & then we went to Y.P.’s. Ella led. She went
home after that & we went into the Chapel. Mr. Howard led. Coming out we saw Mabel
Gerry standing by the gate with Mr. Day & Moore. We spoke to her & finally she shook
hands & after awhile walked through with S. & I to W. St. The car she wanted just
passed & we asked her to come in & wait for the next one did not go for ½ hour. Finally
she came in & upstairs & I gave her some peanuts. She looked well & is taking care of 5
children. When she went I read awhile & then S. & I put up our bed & retired about 12
o’clock.
Mon. 15th. Arose at 7:30 o’clock & wrote accounts, did the chamber work & washed
dishes & cooked dinner & eat & then Ms. Mills & I went down town, carried pleating to
be done & went into Holiness meeting, then did an errand for mother & rode up with
Mrs. Mills & ordered a silver pin made like mine at Hentz’s above Madison St. for $1.25.
Came home & got supper & eat it & S. & I went to B. of H. Mr. Archibald was not at the
Holiness meeting. Mr. Gill led & Mr. Short was present. Mr. S. came home with S. &
came in. I washed dishes & read down stairs. Retired about 12 o’clock.
Tues. 16th. Arose about 8 o’clock & brushed up kitchen & washed dishes & put up our
bed (as also yesterday,) & dusted & brushed our room & ironed all day. Did the chamber
work & went to meeting after supper. Mr. A. gave me the pictures we ordered. The
Salvationists hold an all night meeting in Tremont Temple tonight. The Sp. St. ch. was
empty when we came around there. Mr. S. came in & I read aloud John Bunyan’s “Grace
abounding to the chief of sinners” until 11.30 o’clock. Then S. & I made the bed up
when he went & retired.
Wed. 17th. Arose at 8 o’clock & after breakfast I made 17 buttonholes & cooked dinner
making hash & then emptied rag baskets & did the chamber work & washed dishes &
filled lamps. Then as supper was ready Mrs. Parmenter called & staid until 10 o’clock. I
cleaned S’s shawl in a pillow case with flour. Then washed the saucepan & eat supper &
came upstairs & put away clothes & wrote accounts. Retired about 12.30 o’clock.
Thurs. 18th. Arose at 9 o’clock, changed buttons on my dress & did the house work & eat
dinner; at 1.30 o’clock Mrs. Mills came with the buggy to drive out to the Dorchester
M.E. Ch. to the District meeting of the W.H.M.S. We went out following the Mt.
Pleasant Cars to Dorchester Ave. & then to Richmond St. & through to Washington St.
Mr. Watkins the pastor helped Mrs. Mills put the horse under shelter & we went in. Left
at 4.30 o’clock & drove in to the house & then up to the stable. Went to Mrs. Mills’ to
supper & then we took a car & rode out to the evening service. S. & I joined the society.
Mr. S. came out with S. & we all came in together. Went to bed about 12 o’clock.
Fri. 19th. Arose at 11.30 o’clock. Eat breakfast & did the chamber work & brushed Un.
H’s room & the attic. Swept down the stairs & the entries. Washed the dishes & cooked
cream toast. Changed my dress & went to meeting. Came home & found Mrs. Mills,
who I left here, still here, keeping S. from eating supper & going to bed. She went & I
mixed bread & washed dishes & filled three hods of coal & came upstairs & read &
wrote accounts. Snowing this evening. Mother out working this afternoon.
Sat. 20th. Arose about 7.30 o’clock & eat breakfast & went to a house on Sp. St. came
home & baked my bread & swept the kitchen & did the chamber work, boiled potatoes &
rice & boiled salmon & eat dinner. Made two loaves of cake, dusted Un. H’s room &
mother’s & the kitchen, swept our room thoroughly & took up ashes. Made cocoa for S’s
supper & eat & then washed all the dishes & father gave points of Mr. A’s character &
then I took up ashes from Mother’s stove & made our bed & mended chemise sleeve. I
filled all the lamps today & washed the chimneys. Raining all day. I wrote accounts &
retired about 12 o’clock. Mother worked at Miss Colbath’s today, came home about 11
o’clock.
Sun. 21st. Arose at 10 o’clock & dressed & eat breakfast & put up our bed & did the
chamber work & read. S. went to meeting with Mr. S. who called for her. When she
came home we eat dinner & went to S.S. I led children’s class & came home, Mr. S.
went soon & I got supper & we eat & S. & I went to Y.P.’s meeting. S. led. Prof. Bowne
led down stairs. Preaching. Mr. S. came in & I read aloud until 11 o’clock. He went &
S. & I put down the bed & retired about 10 o’clock.
Mon. 22. Arose early & did the housework & cooked dinner & washed dishes & went to
Holiness meeting alone. Saw Mr. Archibald, he was not able to stay, so told me he might
not come Tues. night, but would send some one. I told him he had better come himself if
possible. I went into Winter St. & did 2 errands & then into the Public Library, saw Mr.
Blaisdell, rode up to Hentz’s & found the badge was not done, came home & b’ot milk &
cooked scrambled eggs for supper. S. & I went to C.S.S.C. Mr. S. came home with us &
I read aloud. Retired about 12 o’clock.
Tues. 23. Arose early & did the house work & made a set of buttonholes. Washed dishes
& cooked dinner. Brushed up our room & put up bed. Eat supper & went to meeting.
Mr. A. there. 16 present, splendid meeting. I had a letter from Mrs. Stetson to whom I
wrote Monday. I ironed 3 skirts & collars & cuffs this afternoon. I went into Sp. St. & S.
& Mr. S. came home. Mr. A. & May Dean in there. Mr. A. had left his Bible in Ch. &
after speaking went out to try & get it. Mrs. Mills & Miss Mason came in & after Mrs.
M. & I came out we went to Mrs. Dean’s to see if Mr. A. got his Bible. Then came
through W. St. & she took a car home & I came in & read aloud. We retired about 1
o’clock.
Wed. 24. Arose about 9 o’clock & eat breakfast & did the chamber work & washed
dishes & brushed the rooms. Filled hods & took up ashes & put up our bed. Cooked
dinner & supper. Cut items from papers. Mr. Day called in the evening to tell me he
would do the slips when he returned from Newark N.J. I retired about 12 o’clock.
Thurs. 25. Arose about 9 o’clock & eat breakfast & washed dishes & did the housework
& looked over the basket of pieces in the attic and found several articles to send away.
Cooked dinner & washed dishes & filled a tumbler with grape preserve & put it in the
bag & went out, calling on Mrs. Stackpole & Bowen, left two papers at Delia’s door as
no one was in. Went over & saw Mrs. Gerry, stopped at Hentz’s & got Mr. S.’s badge &
went to Miss Hutchins; & then across Madison Park, gave out tracts & called on Mrs.
Henck & left the preserve. Was asked to stay to supper & meeting but refused. Left over
100 cards & came down to the store & saw S. & came home & cooked supper & eat.
Looked over papers & overcasted buttonholes & S. mended father’s coat sleeve. Retired
about 12 o’clock.
Fri. 26th. Arose at 9.30 o’clock & took a bath & then eat breakfast & made 20
buttonholes, got dinner & eat. Did the chamber work & put up our bed & filled the lamps
& washed dishes. Took a tumbler of preserve to Mrs. Dean & also 200 cards. Eat supper
there & Miss McGregor & I went to meeting. Mr. Mooers & a number of Y.P. there only
4 of us spoke. Dr. W. called on me to pray aloud. Came home & mixed bread & washed
knives & forks & filled hods & pitchers & made our bed up & wrote accounts & retired
about 12 o’clock.
Sat. 27th. Arose at 8 o’clock & eat breakfast & baked bread & made two loaves of cake,
steamed & roasted beef & washed out handkerchiefs. Helped mother get ready to go to
Stonington as grandmother is going to live in Mystic & let her house. The parlor carpet
was sent on here 50 lbs for 65 cts. I did the chamber work & dusted our room & Un. H’s
& washed dishes after dinner, & found some socks for Un. H. that were whole. Ironed 3
handkerchiefs for S. & swept kitchen & the work room & entries dusted. Took up ashes
& mended stockings & Earl Greenleaf called with paper for mother to sign & I sent it to
her. Cooked supper & washed dishes & wrote accounts. Rainy snow tonight. Retired
about 12 o’clock.
Sun. 28th. Arose at 9 o’clock & got breakfast & Mr. S. called for S. to go & hear Dr.
Townsend preach. I went to our Ch. Came home & got dinner & did the chamber work
& washed dishes & S. & I went to S.S. & then I led the Class & came home. Cooked
supper & Mr. S. staid to supper & went with me to Y.P.’s meeting. Met Mrs. Mills on
Worcester St. She wanted me to walk with her & leave them to walk together. Met Mr.
Archibald & the Dean family on Tremont St. by the gate. I asked Mr. A. to lead the
meeting & as Nattie did not wish to, as she had a headache. He led, read Amos 3-3.
Good meeting. Mr. Mooers spoke. We all went down stairs & Mr. Scott preached from
Heb. 11-7. Closed at 8.30 o’clock & Mrs. Mills, Miss Smeicer, Mr. P. & I went home
with May Dean. S. & Mr. S. coming home at once. I washed up dishes & when he went
we made up our bed & retired about 12 o’clock.
Mon. 29. Arose at 6.30 o’clock & got breakfast & did the chamber work & washed
dishes & got dinner. Mrs. M. called & we went to the meeting in W. Hall. Saw Mr. A. a
few minutes as he was going out early. Afterwards did errands & rode home.
Sprinkling. I got supper & got the B. of H. things & S. came home. We had a good
meeting, May D. there. S. & Mr. S. came home & I put up the books and Mrs. M. came
through with me. carpet up in Chapel. I washed dishes & wrote B. of H. reports & when
Mr. S. went we made the bed & retired. Awoke at 5.30 o’clock & found s. up. I talked
with her, & told her she must be in bed by 12 o’clock hereafter. I made cake today.
Tues. 30. I slept until Un. H. called me at 8 o’clock. I cooked breakfast & did the
chamber work & washed dishes. Un. H. said if he was not home by 6.30 o’clock he
would not be home until Thursday. I cooked dinner & made a set of buttonholes & got
supper & changed my dress & went to Class. S. & Mr. S. went home after Class & Mr.
A. & I spoke & Lizzie & her father came in & staid a few minutes & went out. Mr.
Hoskins & Scott there & prayed, Mr. A. & I also. Came out & M. & M. & I walked
down with Mr. A. to Newton St. talking. I gave him the money for the pictures, & left
May at her door & M. & I came through W. St. I washed dishes & Mr. s. went & we
made the bed & retired about 12 o’clock.
Wed. 31st. Arose at 7 o’clock & cooked breakfast & ironed the starched clothes &
handkerchiefs, did the chamber work, put up bed & brushed & dusted. Made 2 loaves of
cake & washed dishes & cooked dinner. Washed dishes & set the table & changed my
dress & walked out to Warren St. M.E. Ch. calling on Mrs. Parmenter on the way. Saw
Lizzie, Mrs. M., Ida J. & Mr. & Mrs. Chandler. Mrs. Baldwin spoke on china. Children
sang 2 songs. Lizzie & I rode down. Misty. Mr. S. & S. went to see Mr. Halsall’s
painting. I washed dishes & came upstairs & told them what was said by Mrs. B. & he
went. We made bed & retired about 11.30 o’clock.
Thurs. April 1st. Arose at 6.30 o’clock & cooked breakfast & saw to the fires & cut out
child’s skirt & a waist pattern. I put our bed up & wrote accounts & washed dishes &
cooked dinner & swept the work room. Expressman brought the goods from S. I took
the sheets off the chair legs. Got supper and Aunt Nancy came. I washed the dishes &
after she went took the carpet off the rocking chair & found the comforter & quilt wet,
put them to dry in the room. Un. H. came home. Made up our bed & retired at 12
o’clock.
Fri. 2. Arose at 7 o’clock & cooked breakfast & washed dishes & got the tubs +c. &
picked over clothes & washed 6 sheets, tablecloth, chemise flannels & towels & hung
them out. Filled hod, carried the carpet into the attic, aired the quilts on the line & put
them away. Washed dishes & put our bed up & did the work. Sady must have child’s
dress tomorrow. I mixed flour & changed my dress & went to meeting. Mr. Des Jardins
read Col. 3. Came home & mixed bread & washed dishes & took in clothes & Mr. S.
went & I wrote accounts & made our bed & retired about 11 o’clock.
Sat. 3. Arose early & baked bread & steamed & roasted beef, washed dishes & cooked
dinner & sewed on dress until Mother came in the afternoon train. I did the house work
& washed dishes & swept kitchen & dusted our room & kitchen & ironed 3 pieces for S.
& cooked supper. Mother finished the dress & carried it in. She is sick, she brought
home a number of things. I washed the dishes & we retired about 12 o’clock.
Sun. 4. Arose early & got breakfast & S. & I went to Ch. Communion Sunday. Mr. S.
sat in our pew. He walked home with us & left. I did the work & got dinner & we eat &
went to S.S. I led the Children’s Class. Met mother going out as I came home. I got
supper & Mr. S. staid & we all went to Y.P.’s & Prayer meeting & I came home alone
first. When I washed the dishes Mr. S. left & we made the bed & retired about 12
o’clock. They came into the work room.
Mon. 5. Arose early & did the housework & put up o0ur bed. Mother sick so I went to
the Doctors & to the Mexican’s & did an errand for her & came home. She cut Julia
Burgess’ basque & I made the buttonholes. Mr. S. went to Portsmouth today. Cooked
dinner & supper, boiled ham, had not got it done when father came home, [raining?]. S.
did not come until late went to the Met. R.R. Stable fire on Tremont St. near Roxbury
Crssing. I wrote all evening & retired after washing dishes.
Tues. 6. Arose early & did the chamber work & put our room in order & cooked dinner.
Mother went down town about 12 o’clock & did not get back until 4 o’clock & then got
ready & went out to Lodge. I made buttonholes & M.D. brought her dress here with no
twist. I got supper & changed my dress & went to Class. Raining. S. did not come till
after 8 o’clock. She went through with M.J. & M.D. & I went into Sp. St. Ch. but found
the meeting over. Mr. Henck wished very much to see me home but I would not let him.
I went home with May & got twist, came home & mixed bread & retired about 12
o’clock.
Wed. 7th. Arose early & baked bread & put up the bed & did the chamber work &
washed dishes & cooked dinner. Made the buttonholes & clarified the ham fat. Mrs. M.
brought down 1 Doz. Eggs. Mr. D. & cousin J.M. called & I lent him papers to read &
print. I wrote & took a bath. S. went out to Miss Rausch’s with Mr. S. who got back
tonight. Came home at 11.30 o’clock & he did not come in.
Thurs. 8th. I did the house work & put up our bed & swept kitchen, stairs & entries &
dusted our room. Mr. S. came at 1.30 o’clock & S. & I went with him to the Fast day
services, from 2-4 we staid. Met Mr. Mooers as we came out. We went & called at Mrs.
Helliwell’s & then came home. Mr. D. & cousin called & saw them. Aunt Nancy came
down. I got supper & Mr. S. & Aunt N. staid to supper & all the evening. Un. H. out.
Mr. S. sung until 9 o’clock. I washed the dishes & Mr. S. & S. went upstairs, he went
about 10.30 o’clock. We made up the bed & retired about 12 o’clock.
Fri. 9th. I arose about 9 o’clock & did the work & washed dishes & filled hods & lamps
& then went over to see S. & then rode out to Egleston Sq. & down town on errands for
mother. Returned about 3.30 o’clock & washed dishes & ironed until after 6 o’clock.
Mrs. M. came, said she called here for me to go out riding this afternoon. I got supper &
we went to meeting. Mr. S. & S. walked home together & Mr. Mooers walked with me.
We left Mrs. M. at the corner. Mr. S. came in down stairs. I washed the dishes &
chopped crumbs & went in about 10 o’clock & he went. I saw to the fire & S. eat
something & I came up stairs & retired. She came soon & in bed she asked me not to tell
at present & told me Mr. S. wanted to have seen father & mother tonight if [??] had been
in. He wants to be married within a year. We talked until late & I cried with her arms
around me. My heart is sore at the thought of losing my darling.
Sat. 10. Arose about 6.45 & dressed, all I could do to keep from crying, cooked breakfast
& then came upstairs & cried & made buttonholes. Mother stuffed the turkey & I
buttered & salted it & I made buttonholes until I got dinner. Mrs. M. called. Father fixed
the bricks in the yard & carried the buttonholes over when I finished them & then came
up stairs & wrote accounts & cried. Went down stairs & swept the kitchen & cooked
salmon & bacon & S. came home to supper. After supper I dusted the workroom &
kitchen & washed dishes. Did the chamber work before supper some time. Dusted our
room & brushed it & took up ashes. Filled the salt bottles & talked with father & then
came up stairs, filled the pitcher & mended stockings & S. came home. I wrote accounts
up & retired about 12 o’clock.
Sun. 11th. Arose early & eat breakfast & S. & I went to Ch. Mr. S. in the pew, he walked
home with us & went home. We did the chamber work & I washed the dishes & we went
to S.S. I held the children’s class & Eva G. & Mary W. wanted me to go down stairs &
light the gas for them after the others went. I did so & when we came up we found we
were locked in. I opened the window & waited for a boy to pass by. I told one to go over
to Dr. W’s & get the key, he did so & we came out. I came home & got supper. S. came
down stairs to see if she should help any. Mother went over to Somerville & Un. H. was
out. Mr. S. eat supper & we went to Y. People’s meeting & prayer meeting. Claudia
lead. After meeting Mr. S. & S. & I started out & Miss Smeicer came too. We walked
up with Miss Collingwood (she is talking of going to Africa with Bishop Taylor’s
people.) & left Miss S. at our corner. Mr. S. staid until mother came home & then asked
her consent to the engagement & then went out to see father. I was washing the dishes.
Father said they had better wait until better acquainted, it was rather premature, as it was
a long journey to travel. Mr. S. went in the other room & saw S. & left. S. & mother
talked & I came up to bed.
Mon. 12th. Arose early & did the chamber work & washed dishes & cooked dinner &
went down town. Did errands after the meeting & came home. Got supper. I met Mrs.
M. in Weselyn [sic] Hall & she rode up with me. I got the B. of H. things ready & eat
supper & S. came home & we went over. Eight yrs. & 2 days since the Band started in
our house. We formed a White Cross Army 5 members & Mr. S. was elected Secretary.
He came home & staid awhile upstairs. I sit with father & read the books & then mixed
bread & retired about 1 o’clock.
Tues. 13th. Arose early & baked bread & did the chamber work & washed dishes & went
down to Bromfield St. Ch. to W. H. Miss. Soc. Conf. First bo’t books +c in Temperance
room; after meeting went into For. Miss. Room & bought books. Came home & washed
dishes & got supper & went to Class early. Mrs. M. called for me, she went into her class
after talking with Miss Crandall in the hall. I told Mr. A. about S’s engagement. He was
not surprised. We came home after class & I made buttonholes & S. & Mr. S. talked
upstairs. I retired when he had gone & we made the bed up.
Wed. 14th. Arose early & did the house work & made buttonholes & cooked dinner &
put up our bed as usual & made buttonholes. S. came home & Mr. S. came soon after &
they talked all the evening up stairs. I washed the dishes & when he went, put up our bed
& retired.
Thurs. 15. Arose early & did part of the work & filled the lamps & then cleared our
closet in our room & powdered it as Waterbugs have appeared in our room. Went down
& cooked dinner & eat it. Mrs. M. came on her way down town. She invites me to go
with her to Camp meeting this summer. She came upstairs with me & sat awhile. When
she went I cleared the other closet & Un. H. came. Maggie C. was here, but did not stay
to supper. I powdered & killed the bugs & then went down & eat supper & S. came up &
helped make Un. H’s bed & as Mr. S. was here then waiting for her & talking with
mother, she went down stairs. He brought her ring tonight, having been to Portsmouth
today. The ring is marked “Will to Sadie.” He read in the Chatauquan aloud downstairs.
I put the things back in the closet & made the bed & father’s & went down. We talked
about giving the bedroom set to S. & lending her the wine colored set in our room. I
shall not give my part away. Mr. S. went after 11 o’clock & we came to bed. Mother
spoke to father about their wanting to be married Oct. 9th, the day he was converted &
father was astonished about it & feels bad. Mother came up & talked. My head is tired.
Fri. 16th. Arose early & picked out handkerchiefs, & put up our bed & did the chamber
work & darned stockings & cooked dinner. Mrs. M. called. East wind so we did not
think it best to go out riding. Buttonholes came in & I made one set, mother washed the
dishes. I changed my dress & carried buttonholes over & went to meeting. S. Mr. S.
came in & got the pledge card & two books & gave them to him & he went. Mr. S. came
in & staid upstairs until 10 o’clock. I mixed bread & washed dishes & came up & took in
the handkerchiefs I washed today & then made the bed & wrote accounts & retired about
12 o’clock. I ironed 6 sheets & 2 skirts this afternoon.
Sat. 17th. Arose early & baked bread & boiled a tongue, did the chamber work & made
buttonholes all the rest of the day, father let the fire go out after poking it & then went out
& left it & I did not make a fire until supper time as the buttonholes must be done, then I
washed dishes & finished boiling the tongue, brushed our room, swept the kitchen &
dusted our room, the kitchen & workroom & ironed handkerchiefs & retired about 12
o’clock.
Sun. 18th. Arose early & eat breakfast & S. & I went to meeting. Mr. S. in our pew, he
walked through & left. We eat dinner & did the chamber work & S. & I went to S.S. I
held the children’s Class & came home & got supper. Mr. S. came home with S. but did
not stay to supper as he left his overcoat at home & went home for it. It is very warm but
cooler towards night. Father went to the Gough Memorial meeting in Music hall. Miss
Willard presided. Mr. S. called for us & we went to Y.P’s meeting. Was 15 min. late, no
leader in the chair. I asked Mr. Mooers to lead, he refused & Miss McGregor got up &
lead. After the meeting I talked with Mr. M. about riding on the cars Sunday to go to
Tremont Temple. When we came down we found the outside door locked, so he said he
would go into our meeting & followed me into the seat I sat in. After meeting we found
Mabel Gerry outside & she walked thro’ with Mr. Mooers & I & got in a car at our door.
I told him about her & then came in & he went. Mr. S. here until 10 o’clock. Then we
made our bed & retired about 12 o’clock.
Mon. 19th. Arose early & did the chamber work & made buttonholes & cooked dinner.
Mrs. M. called for me to go down to the meeting & I went. We went into W.C.T.U.
rooms upstairs & were introduced to Miss Willard & another lady; did errands & came
home. Made buttonholes & then went to C.L.S.C. Mr. S. & S. staid at home here. I
staid until the recess was over & came home & darned stockings. When Mr. S. went we
made the bed & retired about 12 o’clock.
Tues. 20th. Arose early & made buttonholes. Did the chamber work & mother got dinner
& I made buttonholes. I washed the dishes & went to class & no leader came, so they
insisted on my leading. When we came out Mr. M. walked through with me & we talked
at the door with S. & Mr. S. & then Mr. M. left & Mr. S. came in & staid until 10 o’clock
down stairs. Then we made the bed & I retired.
Wed. 21st. Arose early & made buttonholes did the housework & cooked dinner & made
buttonholes. Mr. S. here in the evening & S. darned stockings. We made the bed &
retired about 12 o’clock.
Thurs. 22. Arose early & made buttonholes did the chamber work & filled the lamps &
made buttonholes. Mother went down town with Mrs. M. & bought our present for Un.
H. for us. A pie knife marked S. Mrs. M. bought a caked basket to give from her, as he
husband gave forks. Mr. s. here in the evening. Made the bed & retired about 12
o’clock.
Fri. 23rd. Arose early & mother went up for a washerwoman & I picked out the clothes to
wash & did the chamber work. Mother brought up the tubs +c & I filled them several
times. Cooked dinner & made buttonholes, the woman came after dinner & washed until
6 o’clock. We had greens and C. Beef for dinner & eat in the workroom. I helped by
rinsing & boiling towels & wringing out all the clothes & emptying the tubs & carrying
them out doors. Changed my dress after supper & making buttonholes & went over to
meeting late. Mr. S. came home with us & staid until 10 o’clock & then we made the bed
& retired. Mrs. M. did not call as she had told me Thurs. she would to take me out
riding. She left word with S. she couldn’t go.
Sat. 24th Arose early & did the chamber work & made buttonholes all day, got dinner &
supper. Mrs. Richards here to work. The woman ironed in the morning & I ironed 2
suits & chemise, then brushed Un. H’s and our room & dusted & swept the kitchen &
dusted it & the workroom & washed dishes & retired about 12 o’clock.
Sun. 25th. Arose in time to go to Ch. late. Easter Sun. & Louise C. & Charley sat in the
pew with Mr. S.; he walked through with us. Presiding Elder Lindsay preached. We eat
dinner & I did the work upstairs but not Un. H’s room as he was in. S. & I went to S.S.
Mr. S. called for us & left his coat here. I did not have the Children’s Class as the S.S.
practiced for the Easter Concert. We came home & I washed the dishes & got supper &
we eat & went to Y.P’s & I led, small number out, 2 sailors there. S. & Mr. S. went into
Sp. St. Ch. & I into the Concert. Came out with Mrs. Parmenter & met M. Gerry on Sp.
St. & as she wouldn’t get into the car then, we walked up to Eustis St. with Mrs. P. &
then M. & I came back & she got in a car & I came in. I felt chilly & there was no fire so
I came upstairs. When Mr. S. went S. & I made the bed & I retired. I saw to Un. H’s
room before supper.
Mon. 26th. Arose early & did the chamber work & made buttonholes. Mrs. M. came
down & went home & then came down for me to go to W. Hall I got dinner & we went
down. Mr. Warrenton spoke & we saw him after the meeting & Mr. Archibald. We did a
number of errands & came home. I bought rolls & came in at 5.45 o’clock. s. sent word
to have papers ready for the sailors, so I did up a package & then got supper & we eat &
went over to B. of H. We voted to keep the disorderly element out. Mr. Day walked
thro’ with me for his Chautauquan & came in. Mr. S. & I settled the White Cross
account & then mother & I went down stairs & I darned stockings until Mr. S. went.
Then we made the bed & retired.
Tues. 27th. Arose early & put our room to rights & went downstairs. Mrs. Lambert came
& when ready she tried her dress on upstairs. I darned stockings & did the chamber
work. Mrs. Richards here. Mother got dinner. Lizzie McCaddon here this afternoon. I
washed the dishes & set the table & we eat & then I went to Gen. Class. I cleaned a pr.
of white gloves for S. this afternoon & ripped & fitted mother’s basque. After class we
came home & Mr. S. & S. went upstairs until 9.45 o’clock & then came down & sit with
father until 11 o’clock while he played the violin. I sewed on my silk overskirt belt. S.
washed the dishes. I came to bed before he went & wrote accounts until 12 o’clock &
then retired. I have finished Un. H’s stockings & he settled with me.
Wed. 28. Arose about 8 o’clock & eat breakfast, called father but he did not get up until
after 1 o’clock. I worked with mother on our dresses for tonight. Did the chamber work
& washed dishes. Uncle Henry was not here to dinner but was to supper & then rode
over to Mrs. Colbath’s & dressed there for his wedding. Mother S. & I went over about
20 min. of 8 o’clock. Aunt Nancy came here & we left her here with father. Mr.
Lambert married Juliet Colbath & Un. H. in his Episcopal robes with two rings. Claire &
her brother stood up with them. 15 present. We came away about 8.45 & went to the
Quar. Teachers’s meeting & staid until over at 10 o’clock. Mr. Arey, Mr. Howard & Dr.
W. (chairman) Committee on Picnic. Mr. S. & Mrs. Parmenter walked thro’ with us &
Mr. S. came in & staid until 10.20 o’clock. I cam upstairs while he was down & made
the bed & wrote accounts. Mr. Bailey is going to New York to work & live & will sell an
ice chest he bought for $16.00 for $7.00. S. talked of Mr. S. buying it. Mr. Lambert has
offered S. $8.00 a week if she will be at the store at 6.30 o’clock when Mr. B. goes & he
goes down town in the morning.
Thurs. 29. Arose early, mother went out to work. Mrs. Mills was down here before she
went, her bird died yesterday afternoon & she is going to have him stuffed. I did the
chamber work & cooked dinner & made a large pan of biscuit. Worked a set of
buttonholes & then went down cellar & cleaned the floor part & carried out a half
barrelful of rubbish, when I cam up found it after six o’clock. I washed the dishes & got
ready & walked thro’ to Tremont St. & after seeing S. took a West End car & rode to the
People’s Ch. Mr. Archibald was praying when I went in to the outer Entry. Mr. Brengle,
Mr. Warrenton & several others were on the platform & conducted the service. The
pastor spoke at the close, he was in the audience. Splendid meeting, the Peo’s Ch. is to
be supported by the free offerings of the people & not by fairs +c. the meeting closed at
10.30 o’clock & I took a car home. Retired about 12 o’clock. Mr. S. was not here
tonight & S. sat with father.
Fri. 30th. Arose at 7 o’clock & got breakfast & went over to the C. Hotel with the
buttonholes & got mother set & came home. Filled the lamps & overcasted a little.
Swept the entries & our room & the stairs thoroughly, brushed the kitchen up & dusted
our room. Looked over a pile of papers, & also collected fashion plates, these I carried
over to the Miss. Meeting, to send to India. Came home about 5.45 o’clock & washed
dishes & the chimneys. I had seen to father’s room this morning, I closed his window as
it is growing colder. Set the table & cooked beans & eat & went over to Prayer meeting.
Called at S’s store but she was not ready, went in with M. Jaeger. I saw the Pastor this
afternoon in the chapel with Dr. W. but not near enough to speak to. He did not lead
tonight & Dr. W. did. He read Rom. 8. We had a good meeting & attendance. Mr. S. &
S. & Mr. Mooers & I walked home & Mr. M. came in with me first, they came some little
time after. Mr. M. has not rode in a car Sunday since we talked it over. When he went &
mother came home, I mixed bread & then came upstairs & Mr. S. went at 11 o’clock. S.
& I made our bed & I wrote accounts & retired about 1 o’clock.
Sat. May 1/86 – Arose about 7 o’clock & eat breakfast & baked bread & boiled ham &
made 26 buttonholes. Did the chamber work & put up our bed & brushed father’s room
& the back stairs. Stewed prunes & molded Farina. Got dinner & supper & washed all
the dishes & filled the lamps & washed chimneys. Swept the kitchen & dusted it & the
workroom & our room. Went over to the Hotel with the buttonholes did not see the lady
& was not paid. Took up the prunes & washed out the dish towels & wash cloth & came
upstairs & took a bath & wrote accounts & retired at 12 o’clock. Mrs. M. was here this
afternoon & was reading the Y.L.’s Journal for about 2 hours. I filled the hod for mother
& took up ashes but her fire went out. I made our bed & S. is not yet ready to retire.
Sun. May 2 Arose about 9 o’clock & dressed & got breakfast & S. & I went to meeting.
Father did not get up until late in the afternoon. Mr. Brodbeck of Cincinnati preached his
first sermon as our pastor. Bishop Foster was present, morning & evening, full house.
Communion service I almost cried, I felt so hurt by so small a thing as S’s kneeling by
the altar with Mr. S. away from me when I had gone where there was room for all of us to
kneel. Little by little my Lord is allowing all ties that bind me here to be destroyed that
my all may be Christ’s only. I came out after Communion & came home & did the
chamber work & studied my lesson & S. & I went to S.S. Mr. Brodbeck came around &
shook hands with the teachers. I held the Children’s Class & came home & got supper &
mother came home & eat with us for the first time with Mr. S. here. We got ready &
went to Ch. Miss Bennet led. We went down stairs & I sat alone on the second seat as
they went in 2 seats behind me. Mr. Warrenton & 3 others present from the University.
Came home with mother & then went upstairs & sat there till Mr. S. went at 10.30
o’clock. We made the bed & I retired. S. did not get into bed until 3.30 this morning.
Mon. 3rd. Arose at 7 o’clock & got breakfast & did the chamber work & filled the lamps
& washed chimneys. Ironed towels & got dinner & eat & changed my dress & went
down to the meeting early. Mr. Short led. Came out & saw Mr. Archibald & Mrs.
Daggett. Did errands & came home & got supper & cleaned gloves with gasoline, it took
the color almost out. Mr. S. came & wrote a note to Mr. A. & posted it. I sat in the
kitchen with father & wrote accounts. Mrs. Chase came to see mother & waited. Mother
out working. Lovely day. Mr. S. went & S. made the bed & I mixed bread & retired
about 12 o’clock.
Tues. 4th. Arose early & got breakfast & did the chamber work & sent a postal to Mr.
Mertz. Got dinner & washed dishes. Un. H. called, they came home yesterday & are
stopping at Mrs. Colbath’s on Northampton St. as their rooms are not vacant until
Wednesday. Minnie had the stoves down & the house was too cold for them to stay in
Mystic. I changed my dress & went to the Annual W. T.(?)M.S. meeting, of our Church.
The same officers were re-elected & then Mrs. Hoskins spoke of work in India, &
mentioned ways they might help. Sending money about $2.50 a month to support a
school wherever she was working. Sending magazines to the Missionary & Christmas
cards to be distributed. I came out, & near Sp. St. met Nellie Cornell & walked down to
the South End Public Library, & then home with her, to see a song she will sing for our
B. of H. Mr. S. was not working & was at home, I spoke about seeing members & he
agreed to call on Mr. Winn & have him come to Class. I came out & called at #27 & saw
Mrs. Honey & afterwards met Hattie & baby on the St. she said she would come. I came
down W. St. & Mr. S. caught up with me & said he would see Miss Smeicer too, so I
went into the store & found father there, & came home & got supper & eat & started out,
about 7 o’clock. The Ch. was dark & I walked down T. St. below Upton St. & then back.
Saw Mr. Haskard & Mr. Mertz. Found the room empty, & soon Mr. Winn came & then
Mr. Archibald & others, we had 18 out & Mrs. Dean & Mr. Henck came in when the Dr’s
class was over & Mr. S. went down & asked Mr. Brodbeck to come up. He did so, for a
few minutes only as it was late. Mr. Mooers walked home with me, he is talking of going
home to live. I came in & went upstairs as it was 9.45 o’clock, S. & Mr. S. came in soon
after & then mother. Mr. S. went about 10.30 o’clock & mother helped make the bed &
we retired about 11.30 o’clock. Pleasant day but rained some about 10 o’clock.
Wed. 5th. Arose about 7.30 o’clock & eat breakfast & mother found the cat had soiled
paper under the table & cleared it out & I washed the paint & kept on & washed all but
the Northern corner of the room, & cleaned the closet out. Father did not get up till after
5 o’clock. It lightened a little & is raining this evening. I cleaned the bird cages & gave
all fresh water & they took a bath. A set of buttonholes came in but mother has the punch
& scissors with her today so I can not do them until tomorrow so I am writing. S. had a
letter from Miss Blancher today. Mr. S. did not come tonight as expected. Wrote the B.
of H. reports to date. Retired about 12.30 o’clock.
Thurs. 6th. Arose at 7.30 o’clock & made the buttonholes & sewed for mother & did the
chamber work & about 3 o’clock walked down to Mrs. Connor’s & to the People’s Ch.
Mrs. Mills and Harold, & I wheeled the baby in the carriage. Walked back & stopped at
S’s store & met Mrs. Dean on Sp. St. Came in & washed dishes & set the table small &
cooked salmon. Lay down before supper awhile, we were eating when Mr. S. & S. came.
She eat & I went upstairs for Gough’s song & father taught Mr. S. the music. S. came
upstairs & made the bed & I retired about 9 o’clock. I mended father’s underclothes
today. Mother at home today but out tonight.
Fri. 7th. Arose at 7.30 o’clock & after breakfast picked out clothes & put on boiler &
brought up tubs +c & went to washing mother went out to work today. I did the chamber
work & Un. H. & wife came & packed his things & a teamster came & took them away.
I washed two boilers full of clothes & hung them out & took them in when dry. I cooked
dinner & then washed up the kitchen floor & the entry & lay down up stairs; after taking
a dry bath & changing my clothes. Father came & I went down stairs & got supper &
washed the dishes. Went to Ch. & when I came home I mixed bread & crumbled bread
for a pudding & washed dishes & then went upstairs & wrote accounts & mother came up
to look at the front room. Retired about 12 o’clock.
Sat 8th Arose about 8 o’clock & baked bread & made a custard bread pudding boiled &
roasted beef, & made cream toast for dinner & boiled codfish & potatoes. Overcasted 18
buttonholes & made 3. Repaired places in Mrs. L’s silk. Sprinkled & ironed all the
clothes & washed the dishes. Swept & dusted the kitchen & dusted our room & mended
S’s [suit?] & washed the dishes after supper. Mother went over to Mrs. L’s about 5
o’clock & has not returned home at 10 o’clock. Wrote accounts & retired about 11
o’clock. Raining hard all day except about 5 o’clock.
Sun. 9th. Arose about 9.30 o’clock & eat breakfast & S. & I went to meeting. Mr.
Brodbeck preached without notes from the text “Have faith in God.” Splendid sermon.
Mr. S. came to the door with us & left. Mrs. Cornell sent an invitation to S. to go up
there to dinner Sunday & S. refused to call on Sunday & we discussed it. We eat dinner
& I did the chamber work & S. & I went to S.S. I held the Children’s Class & Mr. B.
came up for a few minutes. I came home & got supper, father out until we got through.
Mr. S. did not want to stay, but I insisted as the work was all done. Un. H. unlocked the
door & walked in to see mother, he took his ring away. We got ready & S. Mr. S. & I
went to young People’s meeting. Mr. S. led, after meeting Mr. Mooers said he intended
to stay & down stairs asked “Where are we going to sit” I told him I was going to sit up
front & he went up with me. Coming out Miss Smeicer took hold of one arm & walked
with me to the corner but S. called her ahead to walk with them. Mr. M. & Mr. S. came
in. Mrs. Mills & mother walked home together & came in, & we met them going out
again at the door. We talked & then they insisted on my trying to sing with them, & the
two gentlemen staid until 11 o’clock, when S. told them the time. Afterwards we made
the bed & retired about 12 o’clock.
Mon. 10th. Arose about 7 o’clock & made fish balls & cooked them & made a few
buttonholes, did the chamber work & washed the dishes & brushed & dusted our room.
Mrs. M. called in the morning. She did not go to W. Hall or B. of H. I went over to S’s
store after I got dinner & changed my dress & then rode down town. I met Mr. C. F.
Smith into the Bank & then paid the rent & went into the meeting & Butler’s to see Miss
C. & to the Willard tract rooms. I spoke in the meeting for the first time. I rode home &
cooked supper & mended my gloves & got the B. of H. things together & went over
about 7.20 o’clock. Mr. A. let no bad boys in. Mr. Mooers came & took a class & joined
& if he keeps on will be a great help in the work. Board met down stairs & thought we
were too noisy upstairs. Mr. Day wanted W.C. Army Cards & came over after them &
Mr. M. walked with S. as Mr. D. did with me. One of the boys brought rose buds for all
the teachers & S. & I sent ours to Miss Henck & Mr. M. gave one he had given me to him
also. At the house I gave them both a bunch of violets. After they went we made the bed
& I wrote accounts & retired about 12 o’clock.
Tues. May 11 Arose about 7 o’clock & did the chamber work & cleared Un. H’s closet
& took down all the pictures, curtains +c & father took the two lower shelves out of the
closet & I swept the floor thoroughly & moved the bureau & then washed the tops of
bureau & stands & the marble shelf, & moved the table in the workroom into the kitchen
& the kitchen table upstairs. Father helped. Then I swept the workroom & dusted our
room & washed the dishes & mother came, she dusted her room. I made a meat pie for
dinner. I changed my dress & went to class early. Mr. S. led as Mr. A. did not come or
send. Mr. Mooers walked to our door with me & left. Mr. S. came in & staid upstairs
until 10.30 o’clock & then down stairs about an hour. I made our bed & retired about 11
o’clock.
Wed. May 12 Arose about 12 o’clock as I was tired. I cooked dinner & washed dishes &
then cut out white clothes all the afternoon, did the chamber work, but did not put up our
bed. After 6 o’clock I washed the dishes & set the table & S. came about 7.30 o’clock &
Mr. S. soon after. We eat supper & they went up to Mrs. Mills as we were invited as her
husband went to N.Y. today. I sewed on the machine & then washed dishes & wrote
accounts & retired about 12 o’clock.
Thurs. 13th. Arose at 7.30 o’clock. Made 14 buttonholes & cooked a boiled dinner. Mrs.
Mills called for me to drive out to Mattapan & I went upstairs & called father & put my
things on & started. We stopped at Magnolia St. with the buttonholes & then drove out
to M. saw Mrs. Atkinson & gave her 100 “To heaven” & 100 “15 Ques.” & spoke about
B. of H. came back to the stable & then walked out to #12 Marcella St. to look at a house
for 35.00 & then rode home in the car. Mrs. M. got out at the Store. I came in & put up
our bed & did the work & washed dishes & eat supper. Mr. S. came & went over to the
store for a yeast cake & I mixed bread & when he went I retired after making the bed.
Strawberries sold on the street today. Very cold & did rain in some places here, but we
were not caught in any rain.
Fri 14th. Arose at 7 o’clock & baked bread & ripped & made an overskirt +c to my
brown dress. Got dinner & then finding I could not finish the brown I put up our bed &
did the work. Filled the lamps. Changed my dress & wore black silk & red basque &
went down to Mrs. Flanders #400 Columbus Ave. to Children’s Miss. Soc. Meeting one
girl at the ch. Eliz. Aslop brought the dolls all dressed. I staid until near 6 o’clock. Mrs.
Hoskins spoke about dolls in India. They were to have refreshments. I stopped at S’s
store & the grocery & came home & washed dishes & eat supper & went to Prayer
meeting. S. Mr. S. & M. sat in one seat & motioned for me to sit with them but I did not
see them & went ahead. Mr. Brodbeck asked all to move forward, & they came & sat
with me. After the meeting which was a Praise service Mr. M. & I went over with a doll
to Susie H. & S. & Mr. S. went right home. Carried two Beulah Songs. We came in &
sung two pieces & then I read in the Chautauquan until near 11 o’clock. Then Mr. M.
went & we selected texts for Mr. D. to print for India & then Mr. S. went & we made the
bed, & I wrote accounts, & ripped doll’s dresses off. S. sent home a box of strawberries
today. Retired about 12 o’clock.
Sat. 15th. Arose early & swept the kitchen & our room & did the chamber work steamed
& roasted beef & cooked dinner & washed dishes & then went out to walk, bought
articles & came home, got supper & dusted our room & the kitchen & workroom & Mrs.
M. came down, she walked to the Ch. with me & I went to Teacher’s meeting. Dr. W.
led. 10 present. Came home & sat in the kitchen & wrote two letters & then S. came & I
made our bed up & sewed her waterproof where she had torn it & retired about 12
o’clock.
Sun. 16th. Arose about 9 o’clock & eat breakfast & S. & I went to meeting. Mr. S.
walked to the door & left. I had done the chamber work before meeting & lay down &
read notes on the S.S. lesson to S. We went to S.S. & I led the children’s class & came
home, & got supper ready & Mr. S. went home, & we eat supper. He called for us to go
to Y.P’s. No leader appointed & we asked Mr. Clough. He led & Mr. Brodbeck came in
before closing & spoke. Mr. M. speaks in Y.P’s & the other meetings. We went down
stairs & S. told Mr. M. to go up & keep a whole seat, we walked up to the front & all the
seats had one or two in them & he & I sat down on the front one, and Mr. Scott came
later & some boys. Mr. B. preached a short sermon & then followed testimonies. I spoke
& Mr. M. Before closing Mr. B. asked those who wished to be prayed for to rise & 8 did
so. Then those who wished to join on probation & Mr. Mooers went forward first & gave
his name, then Mr. Briggs, Fred Douglass, Alex. Damon & May Dean, while the rest of
us were singing bringing in the sheaves. Praise God for results. Coming down the aisle I
gave a number “Helps to a holy life.” Came out & walked home & Mr. M. & S. came in
& I read the Chautauquan Sunday readings & then we sung until 10.35 o’clock. The
young men went & we made the bed & retired. Mother came up & said Emma Greenleaf
who was married two months ago died Sat. in New York, taken sick Sat. & died before
night. About 3 o’clock I heard Gypsey crying in our room & got up & opened the
window for her but she seemed afraid to take the jump to the roof & finally S. got up &
was intending to drop him out but he clung to her shawl so she put on some clothes &
went down stairs with him & after some time came up.
Mon. May 17 Did not wake up until almost 9 o’clock. All overslept & S. went without
her breakfast. I brushed up the kitchen & washed the dishes & did the chamber work &
Rose Dinsmore & sister came & eat some dinner before S. came home & then went.
Mother out to work. I made a soup for dinner & after dinner Mrs. M. came & we went to
the meeting in W. Hall. Mr. Archibald, Brengle & others there of the students. I sung, &
spoke at the first of the meeting. Came out & saw Mr. A. & told him of our class +c &
gave him 50 or more “Helps to a holy life” & spoke to Mr. Warrenton & Miss Daggett.
We went upstairs & then bought some things & went to W. T. Repository & finally took
a car up. I got out at Dover St. & went into the W.C.T.U. rooms & paid fees & gave a
tract Abiding in Christ to Mrs. Rockwood & then coming up to S.’s store gave out
temperance tracts. Came thro’ Sp. St. & did so, stopped at Mrs. Dean’s & then came
home & washed dishes & Mrs. Chase called for mother and waited for her & they went
out when she came. Mr. S. came about 7.30 o’clock & we read Chau. Rom. Hist.
answers & questions & then went over to [C.L.S.C.?]. I spoke to Mr. Howard during
recess about our Class & then after one song I came out & bought a yeast cake & came
home & ordered two Sat. Travellor’s telling about our Church. Mixed bread & came
upstairs after washing dishes & talking with Mr. S. & S. about Dec. Day. I made up bed
& wrote accounts & retired about 12 o’clock.
Tues. 18th. Arose early & baked bread & swept father’s room & put up our bed & did the
chamber work & washed dishes & made hash for dinner, mother went to Emma G’s
funeral in Langman Hall & in the afternoon, fitted R. Dinsmore’s sister’s brown satin
dress. I stitched on aprons & sleeves until 5 o’clock & then sewed on my brown. Mother
washed the dishes & we eat supper & I changed my dress & wore my brown & after
hunting for my Bible decided I left it in the W.C.T.U. rooms & I went over to the Ch.
with S’s old Bible. Met Mr. Winn & Pitman & they were not going in, but going down
town & said they would call for my Bible & be in the Sp. St. Ch. after Class. S. & I
stood at the gate waiting for Mr. Brodbeck, he came up with Mr. Mooers. We spoke to
him & he said he wanted his friend Mr. Larkin to take charge of the Y.P.’s Class. He was
there with a Mr. Briggs, we had a good Class. Mr. B. read from John 15 1 to 9 v. Mr. M.
told me his grandmother had come to the city that day & he saw her. He talked of going
home to see her Sunday was her birthday, over 80 yrs. old. He staid in Boston & was
blessed & she came on unexpectedly. She was glad he is to be a Methodist, as she is one.
He came out with me & May D. & I went into Sp. St. & found Mr. Archibald was
talking, up front, we staid until Mr. W. & P. came out & we got the Bible & then decided
to go in & stay & see Mr. Archibald. Mr. A. was praying when we went in & then I saw
the Berry Bro. Mabel G. knew & went over & talked with him. I promised we would
pray for him & gave him tracts +c. Leaving him, talked with Miss McGregor & Mr.
Archibald came up & spoke & we came out & Mr. M. put my hand on his arm & took my
Bible & we started for Mrs. Hill’s to leave word for her to come to wash Wednesday. I
rung the bell but she did not hear, so wrote a note & put in the door box & we came down
to the house, spoke of Dec. Day & he is to be in the City & would like to be included in
our small party to go away somewhere, in the afternoon. I came in & he went home,
mother gave me Lilies of the valley & I have pressed them in a blank book of S’s. I
talked with S. & Mr. S. upstairs & when he went I made the bed & S. advised me to
remember Mr. M. had a heart. I do not think he is in danger of losing it & don’t want
him to, for he is younger than I. Retired about 12 o’clock.
Wed. 19th. Arose before 7 o’clock & got breakfast & brought up tubs & carried the
clothes down & filled the tubs & Mrs. Hills came at 8.45 o’clock. I wrung the clothes
through the wringer & filled & emptied tubs & hung out all the clothes & cooked dinner,
but she was here until 5.15 o’clock & is coming tomorrow to wash sheets +c. I took in
the clothes as fast as dry & when she went I changed my dress & went up to see G. Dean
about the coal I ordered of him last evening after Class. He had forgotten the order &
will send it tomorrow, went over to S’s store & bought some milk & a postal card &
coming back bought cakes & a paper & came in & did the chamber work & put up our
bed & wiped the dishes, mother having come home & washed them. I set the table & Mr.
S. came & went upstairs & then came down & eat in the kitchen while we eat, & read
about the Ch. aloud. Miss Terry came & I took her measure, when she went, I turned the
hems to a tablecloth & then filled the tubs with water, putting the clothes in soak. Then I
came upstairs & Mr. S. & S. went down & eat in the kitchen as father was working on the
cages in the work room. I made the bed & wrote accounts & counted money & retired
about 12 o’clock. My feet are tired so I took a bath all over.
Thurs. May 20th. Arose at 7 o’clock & was eating breakfast when the woman came to
wash. I had a set of buttonholes come in & overcasted 3 Doz. but only worked 2 ½
during the day, as I went upstairs after the money for the coal, father was not up & tended
door & wrung the clothes through the bluing water & hung out & took them all in.
Mother out working, the day was lovely until about 6 o’clock when a slight thunder
shower came up. I cooked dinner & washed dishes. Alice Glover called in the morning.
After the woman went I brushed the floor & put the flat on & lay down. May Dean
called to get me to go over & sew tomorrow on her dress, I told her I was not a
dressmaker, but they think I could do it all right. I cooked eggs for my supper & hulled
strawberries. S. took her supper to the store & did not come home until after 10 o’clock.
Mr. S. & her going out to Brookline to the Holiness meeting. After supper I ironed, from
8 until 9.30 o’clock. Ironed all the flannels. The lady came & took the waist to work on
tonight, so I could not sew tonight. The sky was very red when the shower was over & it
is warm tonight. Father is altering the sparrow’s cage & found half a teaspoonful of tiny
lice in the top; part of the handle. I washed the dishes & came upstairs & made the bed
up. I did the chamber work & put up our bed this afternoon. Washed me to my waist &
wrote accounts & retired.
Fri. 21st. (Mrs. M. was down yesterday & said we could have Mr. M’s horse any
Thursday evening & take a carriage & ride out. Mr. S. & M. & S. & I.) Arose about 7
o’clock & got breakfast & put our room in order, swept it & made father’s bed & ironed
all the handkerchiefs, pillowslips & towels & underwaists & chemises. Cooked dinner,
& washed dishes & changed my dress & dusted our room & went over to Mrs. Dean’s &
sewed from 3.30 o’clock until 5.30 o’clock, then May & I came out & bought a spool of
silk & I came home with the dress. They wanted me to stay to supper. I found Mrs. M.
on the steps & I had left my key in the other dress pocket, so I ran over to Lambert’s for
S’s key. Found father at home when I returned. I sifted my flour & prepared it & left it
in the work room. Etta Freeman called for Mrs. M. & they went for a walk before
meeting. Mother came & we eat supper. Father rode on the Elevated Road engine today.
I wore a pink, a rose & lilies of the valley & similax to Ch. tonight. I went after supper &
met Ida Jones by the ch. & May D. came in with us & walked up the aisle with me. I
went in the seat with S. & Mr. S. & Mr. M. Soon however she saw Emma Peterson
ahead & went & sat with her. S. & I spoke. Emma Peterson did for the first time. Mr.
Henck testified the Lord gave him a clean heart in Brookline, in last evening’s meeting.
Spoke to Mr. & Mrs. Babcock. Mr. M. & I and S. Mr. S. & May Dean walked thro’
Springfield St. & Mr. M. & I came in first. Told him about the horse & he offered to pay
for the carriage himself. He told Mr. S. I said he could drive & pay for the carriage but I
insisted on his taking that statement back & he did so & put out his hand for forgiveness.
I showed him my Autograph Album & gave him a Travellor with Mr. B’s picture &
sketch of our Ch. in it. Mr. S. invited him to go with us Dec. Day & he promised he
would. I proposed inviting more; and he said I seemed to want a crowd. He asked our
ages as he had given his & Mr. S. told him to guess his & he said 24 yrs. I made him
guess mine & he guessed from 95 down to 25 yrs & I think was surprised I was that age.
He is not going home Sat. night & says he has decided almost not to go down Saturdays
any more, but wait until his vacation. I told him I was glad for tho’ it was none of my
business I did not think it was best to drive Sundays. Lord! thou wilt lead us as fast as we
are willing to follow. He went about 10.30 o’clock & I went down & mixed my bread &
Mr. S. went. I washed the dishes & came up & made the bed & wrote accounts. Retired
about 12 o’clock.
Sat. 22nd Arose at 7 o’clock & got breakfast & baked bread & carried clothes upstairs off
the line. Filled the lamps & roasted beef & sewed on May Dean’s dress when I could all
day. Cooked blanc Monge & roasted beef & boiled codfish & potatoes & made sauce.
Washed the dishes & made beds & dusted all our rooms, S. swept the entry out, father
was to work in the kitchen so I could not sweep only brush up. Mother finished Mrs. S’s
dress & S. & Mr. S. carried it over after she got home from the store. Very warm
weather & we let the fire out. Mother finished Mrs. M’s black sack at her house & then
came home after supper & took hold & finished M. D’s dress, as I had not finished doing
the work. I sewed on buttons & mended one pair of stockings & took a bath & wrote
accounts & retired about 11 o’clock. Tired.
Sun. 23. May Arose at 6:30 o’clock & put our bed to air & went down stairs & cleared
the stove, but mother lit the gasoline Stove. I made fish balls & fried them & set the table
& then put our room in order & eat & S. & I went to meeting. Mr. S. there. We saw Mr.
M. on the other side of the Ch. & S. wanted to borrow my Discipline of him & we waited
awhile outside to see him but he did not come out, & we started for home & then Mr. S.
left us. S. lay down until S.S. & I marked my Bible. Mr. S. called for us & we went to
S.S. I held the Children’s Class & Eva G. & s. Hatfield came home with me as E. wanted
a doll to dress for India. I got supper & Mr. S. went home & we eat & he called for us to
go to Y.P’s meeting. Miss Bennett I asked to lead & she did. Afterwards Mr. S. & M. &
S. & I went in downstairs & sat in the second seat on the side. A friend of the Cornell’s
had a baby baptized & N. Cornell & a young man & the mother stood up with it. We
spoke to Mrs. Babcock. Mr. Larkin came & spoke to the members of his class, & I spoke
to M. Helliwell about coming to our B. of H. & said we would see she got home safe. I
afterwards was standing at the gate & Mr. M. & S. there & asked if we could not walk
home with her. Mr. S. said yes & Mr. M. did not speak. S. talked with a young lady &
then we came home. Mr. M. & I first. We sung & then I read the introduction to the
Phil. Of the Plan of Salvation & S. brought up lemonade, as the young men were dry. I
put a B. of H. pin on Mr. M. & asked him if he was superstitious. He said “no.” He went
down to T. Temple to hear Mr. Brodbeck this afternoon. I asked Dr. W. to iinvite him to
S. S. as they stood by me, & Mr. M. said he intended to come. When they both went
home, I made the bed & we retired about 12 o’clock. I gave Mr. M. a card to remember

Mon. 24. I arose at 7 o’clock & after breakfast went down cellar & cleaned it up, all but
moving the wood from the corner front to the back part. I came up about 12.45 &
changed all my clothes & put our room in order & made father’s bed & eat dinner & Mrs.
M. called & we went down to the meeting. Mr. A. & W. there, but they went out early.
We came out when it was over & went up to U. rooms & bought books +c. and into the
Temp. rooms down stairs & then to Jordan’s & bought S. a collar & took a car home, I
got out at our house & left bundles & made up packages for Miss Stevens & went to the
P.O. & bought a postal order & then went down to Mrs. Helliwell’s staid from 6 to 7
o’clock & Mr. H. said she could go if she was home by 9.30 o’clock & we saw her home.
I came home & eat supper & went over to B. of H. was late. After the meeting I spoke to
M. & she took the lilacs I brought over, & we started, it seems Mr. M. did not see me go,
I tho’t he did. I went home with M. & S. put up the books +c. & discovered I had left &
sent Mr. M. after us. But he did not see me until I was coming back, between Newton &
Concord Sts. He said S. scolded him for letting me go alone, but he did not know I had
gone. He left at the door & I came in & told her I did not like her talking to him as tho’
he was obliged to go with me. When I had washed the dishes Mr. S. had gone, & I made
the bed & retired about 12 o’clock. My head ached & I was tired, I suppose clearing the
rubbish out of the cellar was bad for me for about 4.30
Tues. May 25th I awoke with terrible pains in my stomach and had to get up, my head
ached & I felt sick to my stomach but did not vomit. I took Mec. & put the shawl to my
stomach & got into bed & went to sleep & awoke about 10 o’clock & dressed & eat
breakfast, father was only up a short time. I came upstairs & wrote accounts. Mother at
home today. I found Mrs. Stetson’s letter & made up a package of papers & cards for her
& then put up 4 packages for different States of Temp. literature. Basted goods on Miss
Terry’s lining & eat supper afterwards, & went over to Class meeting. I did the chamber
work & put up our bed early. Mr. Larkins led the class, we enjoyed it very much, he will
not be with us again until the middle of September, as he goes home for the Summer.
Mr. Mooers & I came out & went into Sp. St. for a while, I told him he did not say he
would go down last evening with me, & he said next time consider it a matter of course
that he would. We came home & he came in & I read Gen. Booth’s vision in the War
Cry & lent him a tract on the Sabbath saying I wanted him to be sure & read it. He took
his Chautauquan & went. I made the bed & we retired.
Wed. 26th. Arose about 7 o’clock & eat breakfast & Mrs. Hills was coming to wash if
pleasant, but it was quite cool so father wanted the rubbish of wood in the yard burned. I
lit the kitchen fire & brought in 2 basketfuls of wood, it made my stomach feel weak, but
I did not say anything, he insisted on burning wood until after dinner & Mrs. H. came at
10.15 o’clock and starched the clothes & I hung them out & took them in when S. came
as it was feeling like rain, but it did not rain. I sewed the brocaded satin on S’s dress, as
Mrs. Richard’s was down & draped it on me. Then I washed the dishes & Mrs. M. came.
A note came in the morning for me from Mr. Mooers, he had read the tract & returned it
lest he forget it. Mother came home & changed her dress before going down town with
Mrs. Copeland, as she was going to the Suffrage Sociable supper. I put up our bed & did
the work & when S. came we changed our dresses & Mr. S. called & we went down to
call on Mr. & Mrs. H. S. Stanton. They gave each a box of wedding cake & we came out
& Mr. S. went down to see if Mr. M. was going to our Ch. Sociable & we came home for
a few minutes & then walked down & met Mr. S. & we went to the Ch. Reception to the
Pastor & wife. Came home at 10 o’clock & Mr. S. went home & I made the bed & we
retired about 12 o’clock. Cloudy.
Thurs. 27th. Pleasant, I arose about 7.45 o’clock & after breakfast took the ironed clothes
upstairs & did the chamber work & wrote accounts, & then brushed up the kitchen &
ironed the rest of the clothes got dinner & supper & washed the dishes. Mr. S. & S. went
up to see the washer woman, she will come Sat. to wash. They sat upstairs when they
came back, & I basted Miss Terry’s basque together she & I went up into the front room
& was trying it on when mother came, she altered it & then Mr. S. went, I made the bed
& retired about 12 o’clock.
Fri. 28 May Arose about 7.30 o’clock, mother had a spell of wind colic & came upstairs
before we got up. I eat breakfast & got the codfish & potatoes ready & made balls, father
did not come down stairs until late. I swept our room & the entries & stairs & did the
chamber work & then Miss Terry came & she stitched her buttonholes around & I began
them, I washed the dishes after dinner & changed the [ruching?] in my dress & went over
to the Ch, staid upstairs until 4.40 waiting for N. Cornell to come to practice on the
organ, she did not come & I went down to the Miss. Meeting; made buttonholes all the
time. I was asked to lead in prayer & did so. Came out & bought sugar & came home &
finished buttonholes & was taking out bastings when Mr. Archibald & Brengle called &
came upstairs & staid a short while. Mr. A. wants my extra pictures I have left of his. S.
came as they were going & after we eat supper, Mr. S. called & we went to Prayer
meeting. Mr. S. led the way up the aisle & went in last. Mr. Moors was in the opposite
side seat & after the prayer he moved over side of me. Had an experience meeting of the
benefit of family worship. Mr. S. & S. walked home ahead & Mr. M. put my arm
through his & we walked thro Wor. St. passed J. Burgess & friends. Mr. M. came in, I
asked him to lead Y.P’s meeting & he consented. We discussed where & when to go
Monday afternoon & spoke of Thursday evening, he went at 10.30 o’clock. I gave him
some wedding cake to eat & after he went I mixed bread & Mr. S. went & I washed the
dishes & came up & made the bed & wrote accounts & retired about 1o’clock.
Sat. 29th. Arose early & baked bread & bro’t up the tubs & helped the woman wash.
Wrung the clothes thro’ the wringer & hung them out & took in when dry, made 2 loaves
of cake & roasted beef. She went about 3 o’clock. Mother out sewing. I washed up the
floor & dusted our room & made a set of buttonholes & after supper I made the bed in the
front room & left our room in order. Retired about 11 o’clock. Pleasant.
Sun. 30th. Arose at 7 o’clock & went down stairs & got breakfast & then Mr. S. called &
S. & I went over to the Love Feast in the Chapel at 9 o’clock. Mr. Brodbeck led. Mr. S.
& S. & I sat with Mr. M. S. & I spoke & the other two rose when asked who would
speak if time allowed. Then we went into the Ch. & Mr. M. sat in his own seat.
Communion service, afterwards Mr. M. said it was his first Communion. I gave him
Tract “Refiner of Silver” to remember the day by. He walked through to Wash. St. with
me & I came home. S. & I had dinner & I did the chamber work & then we went to S.S.
Mr. M’s first time in our S.S. he liked Mr. Brodbeck very much as a teacher. I led the
Children’s Class & came home & got supper & we eat & I wrote awhile & then went to
Y. Peo’s Meeting. I had just got there in time to give out the first hymn at 7.30 o’clock.
Mr. M. closed at 7.15 o’clock. He prayed for the first time in public. We came down
stairs & I went up the aisle & sat down & he & S. & Mr. S. followed. We had a good
meeting in both places. Mrs. Cornell rose for prayers. I gave Mr. M. a scripture text
card. Mr. Brengle & Larkin were there & spoke & we shook hands with them. Came out
& found it raining slightly. S. had brought over our waterproofs & Mr. M. had an
umbrella & S. so we came home all right & Mr. M. came in & I gave him “Golden Texts
+c” book for 1886 & I read Bushnell’s life of Christ. I gave Mr. M. some Pho. for his
cold. He went at 10.30 o’clock & Mr. S. & then we retired.
Mon. 31st. Arose early & dusted the kitchen & washed dishes & did the chamber work &
dusted our room & sewed on Miss Terry’s dress & did an errand & got dinner, S. came
with milk to make farina pudding. I hulled strawberries for supper & then Mr. S. & Mr.
M. came to go out to Allandale Springs with us. We left here about 1.35 & took a T. St.
car down town & then rode out in J. Plain Car. & walked to the Springs & around in the
grove & got moss & two stones for cabinet. Coming back we got lovely blue & white
flowers & daisies & buttercups + c. Burton Clark & Geo. Ingraham in the car. S. gave
them flowers. We came in, the young men sorted the flowers while I went down stairs &
set the table. Father in, but mother out sewing. The young men washed their hands in
the front room & came down to supper. Mr. M. asked father if we didn’t look as if we
had been off on a tramp & father smiled & said “Yes.” After supper we went upstairs & I
was reading when mother called to me that Mr. Day & friend were at the door. I told
them to come up & they did & staid until after Mr. M. went. His throat was sore & I
gave him Belladonna & he took it home to take. Mr. S. went last, & then we got ready &
went to bed. Father likes Mr. M. very much indeed, thinks he is worth 5 or 6 Days he
said. Lacks cautiousness in talking.
Tues. June 1st/86. Arose about 7 o’clock and after breakfast, dusted our room & then
sewed on Miss T’s dress & for mother & cooked stew for dinner. Mrs. M. called, after
dinner I sewed until after 4 o’clock & then washed dishes & wrote accounts & did the
work & put my things on to go to Class when the bell rang & I went ready to go out,
found Un. W. on the steps he walked to the Ch. with me & then went down to Un. H’s &
staid until 10 o’clock. I went in to Class, no leader there & I finally induced G. Dean to
lead Read about Nicodemus. Came down stairs with Claudia, had told S. Un. W. was
coming back to the house & Mr. M. asked me if I said I had company home. I said no, &
he took my books & came thro’ & in. Mr. S. went first & before Mr. M. went Un. W.
came & was introduced. He asked who he was after Mr. M. went. I gave him flowers of
those we gathered. Un. W. & S. went down stairs & I made the bed over in the front
room & moved all our things out & made our bed & then mixed bread & retired about 12
o’clock, head ached.
Wed. June 2 Awoke about 8 o’clock but did not get up until 9 o’clock as I was tired then
brushed our furniture & went down stairs & baked y bread & eat, & then did the chamber
work & washed dishes & filled lamps & washed chimneys & then eat dinner & wrote a
card for Mr. Archibald & put in $10.00 & a number of tracts “helps to holy living” & 5
pictures & then changed my dress & went down to B.U. exercises in T. Temple. Miss
Terry, Mr. Ar., Mr. Warrenton, Scott & Hoskins graduated. I saw Mr. B. while looking
for Mr. A. & as we could not see him anywhere, Mr. Briggs & I went over to 36
Bromfield St. & called for him & gave the envelope to him, he was entirely surprised &
we talked about the class & he said I ought to lead it. We came out & took a car. Mr. B.
paid my fare, tho’ I told him I did not wish him to do so, he would not take the money
back. Got out & changed my dress here & washed dishes & eat supper & got ready &
Mr. M. came at 7.45 o’clock & I went up with him to Mrs. M’s & all went to the stable &
got the carriage & Mr. M. drove down & we left Mrs. M. at her house & he & I came
down & waited for S. to get ready, then Mr. S. & S. got in & we drove out beyond
Chestnut Hill & back to the house & then Mr. M. & I went up with the carriage & walked
down & were talking at the door when mother opened the door & Un. W. came to the
door & spoke. Mr. M. asked me if I was going to Chau. Circle tomorrow evening. I said
I thought I would not. He said he shouldn’t. I came in & talked awhile with Un. W. &
he went to bed & I eat a slice of bread & made our bed & wrote accounts & retired about
12 o’clock.
Thurs. June 3rd. Arose at 6 o’clock & cooked breakfast & bid Un. W. “Good bye” & he
went home & I washed the dishes & did the chamber work & made a set of buttonholes
& cooked fish for dinner & did an errand & carried my shoes into the store to be tapped
& then washed the dishes & after finishing the buttonholes I wrote accounts. Rained
several times today but quite warm, sun out this afternoon. Aunt Nancy came & spent
the evening, Maggie C. called & invited us to drive out to Wollaston. Mr. S. came &
after posting 2 letters I had written, Aunt N. & Mr. S. eat in the kitchen while we eat &
then we sung a little, but I came upstairs at 9.30 o’clock and made the bed & wrote a little
& retired about 10.30.
Fri. 4th. Arose at 8 o’clock & wrote accounts & did the chamber work & washed dishes
& ironed all the clothes but dresses & aprons. I cooked dinner & washed the dishes &
father & I eat supper & I changed my dress & went to meeting. Mr. M. came in later &
walked up the aisle to where S. Mr. S. & I were & came in to our seat. He took a bundle
Mr. Day had for me & waited till I started & took my Bible & walked home with me &
came in upstairs. S. & Mr. S. down stairs & would not come up. I gave Mr. M. N[?]
Vornica for Catarrh cold & read S. S. Journal notes on the lesson, he went at 10.30
o’clock & I went down & mixed bread & then came up & made our bed & retired at
11.30 o’clock.
Sat. 5th Arose at 7.30 o’clock & washed my feet & after breakfast baked bread & roasted
beef & did the chamber work & swept the entries & stairs & our room & dusted & then
carried our things in[??] the front room. Made 18 buttonholes & a rice pudding &
cooked dinner & washed dishes twice. Chopped up pineapple for tomorrow & sewed
so[??] & wrote accounts. Washed chimney & filled lamps. Dusted kitchen & work
room. Retired about 12 o’clock.
Sun. 6th. Awoke about 8 o’clock & heard Fannie Chesebro’s voice in the entry. S. [??]
dressed & I set the table for breakfast & mother cooked Ham & eggs. I talk with Fannie,
& after breakfast she [page torn] Ch. & S. & I to Ch. We saw F. Blaisdell & wife &
waited outside to speak to him. Mr. M. asked me if I was going up C. St. & I said I was
waiting to see some one & he started on. Mrs. B. looks poorly, her mother has died &
she says she intends to do her own work as she is lonesome with nothing to do. Mr. S.
was introduced & we came home. I washed the dishes & S. & I moved our things into
our room & made up the front room bed for Fannie. We went to S.S. & I led the
Children’s Class. Gave Mr. M. Golden Text card. Came home after Teacher’s meeting,
in which nothing was decided about the picnic & as next Sun. is Children’s Day the class
collection is to be put in envelopes & given in in the evening when the am’t will be read
for each Class. I got supper & we all eat & then S. & I went to meeting. Mr. Haskard &
the children insisted I ought to lead the Y.P’s as Mattie was not there. I read & we had a
very good meeting. Frank & wife there. I called on Mr. M. to pray. We came down
stairs & I went up alone & took a seat & Mr. M. came in too. When S. came up she
[torn]et ahead of us & Mr. S. We had a good meeting. Fannie & Mother there. I spoke
to Mr. Brodbeck & he asked if Mr. Neal had gone, I said “yes” & he asked if we would
like Mr. Helliwell [torn line, only “Tuesday” partly legible] he called to him & I came
out. Mr. M. came home with me & came in. I read “Character of Jesus.” Mr. M’s throat
was sore but he would not let me give him anything. When he went I came down stairs
& talked with Fannie & Mr. S. went & she went up to bed & we did, about 12 o’clock.
Mon. 7 Arose about 7 o’clock & after breakfast Fannie got ready to go to a friend’s &
stay awhile & I did the work & mother went to work. The load of wood came from Mr.
Mills’ & I had to go down cellar & pull it into the corner. Then came up & changed my
dress & wrote B. of H. Sec. & Treas. Acct’s & reports. Cooked dinner & did not go to
W. Hall tho’ Mrs. Mills called for me. I finished writing about 5.30 o’clock & washed
the dishes & set the table & went over to the Ch. before S. Met Mr. Day, Smith &
Richmond Dean outside & Mr. M. came along. Aunt Nancy & [Annie?] there. Had a
good meeting & after it I put my things on & Mr. M. asked if I was going down with M.
H. I said “yes” & said he would go with me, so we started out. Coming back he stopped
at the door but did not come in. I sat down stairs with father until after 10 o’clock & then
went upstairs & waited until Mr. S. went & S. asked if I had mixed my bread. I had
forgotten it. I walked over to the Store with S. this noon & bro’t things home. I went
down stairs & mixed my bread & then went up & helped make the bed. Mother has
brought home a set of buttonholes to make tomorrow. Retired about 12.30 o’clock.
Tues. 8th. I arose about 8.30 o’clock, I was tired & another set of buttonholes was
brought in to be made by tomorrow morning. I baked my bread & put our room in order
& did the work & made buttonholes until S. came home. I got dinner & we cooked
Farina. Mrs. N. called. After dinner S. & I got ready & went down town bought gray
thin dresses 25 yds at 6/4 cts. & linings +c. & S. bought 6 sheets all made for 69 cts.
apiece. Then we had 1 ½ doz. tintypes taken & mine were very poor S’s good. Came
home & S. eat & I washed dishes & worked on buttonholes & got ready & went to Class.
Mr. Helliwell lead. Mr. Ryle’s sister & wife came, Mrs. R. was never in a Class before &
liked it very much. I spoke to Mr. H. at the gate & Mr. M. waited for me & came home
with. He asked for one of the pictures I had taken, but I said they were too poor. I would
not give or show him one. He came in & looked at the albums & S. & Mr. S. came
upstairs & I said he could have Mr. S’s picture of me, as S. had two of me. Mr. S. said he
could, after awhile & Mr. M. said I said I would not give him one, but if I would consent
he would like it. So he took it. We talked about expenses & he said his averaged $10.00
a week. Mr. S. thought he was extravagant, but he said he was not, he practiced the most
rigid economy. I read a story in the Woman’s Journal “The Wife’s experience” was what
started our discussion on Political economy. He started to go & I read the letter I
received from Mr. Habberly asking about our White Cross work, & Mr. S. took it to
answer, & then we spoke of going to ride June 17th. Mr. M. said he would be glad to go
provided we consented to the gentlemen paying for the carriage. I went down to the door
with him & mother was just coming from the car, about 11 o’clock. I went upstairs &
worked several buttonholes, Mr. S. went & S. & I made the bed & we retired about 1
o’clock. Mother says she has spoken to a number about our White Cross work, I told her
she ought not to; refer them to Mr. S. not to me.
Wed. 9th. Arose at 6.20 o’clock & worked on buttonholes until I came down to breakfast.
Mother had not cooked S’s breakfast & she eat a cold one. I finished the buttonholes
after the man came for them, he waited. Then I did the chamber work & cleared the table
& lay down for an hour & the bell rung. I went & found a letter to me from Mr. M. I put
our bed up & cooked dinner & then changed my dress & put on my linen suit & sewed
for mother until after 4 o’clock & then I wrote accounts. I washed all the dishes after
dinner & set the table. Sewed for mother until after 4 o’clock, then came upstairs and
wrote to Miss Stevens & sent 2 tracts & a list of Scripture passages to Mr. M. II Thess 3,
3, 4 I Thess 5-16 to 25 Eph. 3-16 to 21 Gal. 6-9 Eph 1-3 Jas 1-12 I John 3-3 Heb. 13-15,
21 I John 5-15. Went down to the Office & mailed them & bought some postals for R of
H. & came home & S. came & we had supper. Mr. S. came, a number called to see
mother. Dr. Crawford was upstairs & friends. When they went Mr. S. & S. went up. I
staid with father writing accounts until 9 o’clock, then mother wanted me to go out to Mr.
Beckwith’s stable & see about our hiring a team of him. Mrs. Chase went out home &
we rode out to just beyond Green St. Saw a clerk who said it would be $4.00 from noon
until 11 at night, $3.00 for any other day & $5 for all day. Coming home it rained, I
came up & told Mr. S. about it. S. & I think we had better go into the country
somewhere. Mr. S. went about 11 o’clock & S. & I made the bed & I wrote accounts &
retired about 12.30 o’clock.
Thurs. 10th. Arose about 8.30 o’clock & took a bath and then did the chamber work &
made 18 buttonholes & S. & I eat dinner. Father went out with his battery for the first
time for some weeks, he has been repairing it. I washed the dishes & did the work &
made 20 buttonholes & set the table & Mr. S. came, I took him upstairs, & when we eat
supper he came down & sat in the kitchen until S. was through eating, & they went
upstairs & worked on sheets. I went up about 8.30 o’clock & we sorted & did up 2500
cards for India & then he went & S. & I made the bed & I wrote accounts & retired about
11 o’clock & she took a bath, did not sleep sound until after 2 o’clock when she went to
bed.
Fri. 11th. Arose early & did the chamber work & brushed our room & made clothes for
doll to send to India, changed my dress & carried Mrs. Pearson’s dress in. Mother came
home about 10 o’clock & staid at home sewing on Mrs. Flanders’ dress, I worked until
after dinner & went down town about 3 o’clock & did shopping & then came home & got
2500 cards, Mr. D. had printed, & carried them to the Miss. Meeting & sewed awhile
there, came home, stopped into S’s store. Got supper & changed my dress & Mr. S. & S.
came home & I went to meeting with them. Met Mr. M. on T. St. & he followed me up
the aisle into the seat. I sent him 2 tracts Wed. (yesterday) & he returned them by mail
this morning. He came home with me & in & he read the S.S. Lesson aloud while I made
buttonholes & darned stockings & they worked on sheets. When he went, I went to the
door & spoke about his letter to him. Then mixed bread & Mr. S. went & I made the bed
& we retired about 12 o’clock.
Sat. 12th. Arose about 7.30 o’clock & eat breakfast & baked bread & roasted beef. S.
sent a boy here with a sparrow & father paid him 10 cts for it. Father went out with his
battery & mother to work. I did the chamber work & brushed & dusted our room &
when I went down stairs the sparrow was lying on one side in the bottom of the cage, I
took it out & held it & gave it water. Phoebe had been jealous of it & caught hold of it as
soon as father had offered to put it in her cage, so he left it in the small cage with the
canary. I had ripped the braid off S’s dress & was mending & sewing on braid, but the
sparrow seemed better when I held it, so I did until it died in my hand, with its blue eyes
open wide. I cooked S’s dinner & we eat & I washed the dishes & then sewed the braid
partly on & swept the kitchen & went up & changed my dress & went out, calling on
Delia, Jennie S. at Eugenie B’s, saw Mrs. Perham on the St. & Mrs. M. went into George
Dean’s & gave him a quantity of tracts to distribute, he is to lead the Y.P’s meeting if Mr.
Henck will not. Came home & finished skirt & mended gloves & got supper & then
mended stockings & dusted work room & kitchen & washed dishes & came up & wrote
accounts & made the bed & retired about 12 o’clock. John Cunningham called this
evening & borrowed my Lib. Card. They sold their house on N. St. this week.
Sun. Arose about 8 o’clock & got breakfast & put up our bed & S. & I went to meeting,
raining, Mr. M. waited at the Ch. door after service, I asked him if was going to lend me
the use of his umbrella, & he said “yes” & walked with me to the door. Mr. S. with S.
We eat dinner & I wrote extracts & then S. & I went to S.S. No lesson, rehearsal for
tonight’s service in the main room. I did not hold Children’s Class, it was so late, came
home, my head ached & I lay down while S. got supper, I made father’s bed & we eat
supper & S. & I went to Y.Peo’s meeting. Mr. Henck led commenced at 6.15 o’clock.
Went into Children’s service $75.00 raised. Mr. Graves spoke to me afterwards about
someone to conduct the service in the Tombs (for the women). Mr. Mooers waited for
me & came in & found mother upstairs, she had a toothache & went down soon & I read
from “Character of Jesus.” I told Mr. M. about the pastor inviting S. & I to his house
Mon. eve. & Mr. S. was going & he said if he could be of service, he would go. Mr. S.
went & I made our bed & S. & I retired about 12 o’clock.
Mon. 14 Arose early & did the chamber work & made a set of buttonholes & washed
dishes & cooked dinner. Repaired my brown sleeve & changed my dress & went to 35 E.
Sp. St. to see a Mrs. Dearborn & then went to W.B.T.U. meeting. Mrs. Gordon came in
late. I walked home & bought rolls & got supper & S. & Mr. S. came. At 7.40 Mr. M.
came. I prayed today that if it was not best for him to go, he would not come. We all
went down. Mr. M. carried the Directory & looked up names. Dr. W. & Mr. Furness
there. Dr. W. went first. Mr. B. never has had fairs. He smoked until 3 yrs. ago, left off
because of his example. We left about 10.30 o’clock & Mr. S. & M. did not come in
here. I mixed my bread & made up our bed & retired after 12 o’clock.
Tues. 15 Arose about 7 o’clock & got breakfast & baked bread & did the chamber work
& brushed up our room & kitchen. Mrs. M. called yesterday & today. I made 6 large
buttonholes & was combing my hair when E. Goodwin & Emma Peterson called, they
staid some time. I changed my dress & when they went I set the table. I had washed the
dishes & cooked beans & cocoa for S’s breakfast tomorrow. I then wrote accounts & eat
supper, & went to meeting, carried Emma P. & Minnie J. a tin picture, Minnie says she is
to have some taken & will give me one. Mr. S. was not at class, he went to Manchester
by the Sea & did not return that night. S. started right off as soon as class was done &
went home & lay down on the sofa down stairs. Mr. M. & I came home & he copied B.
of H. names onto slips ready for book. Left about 10 o’clock & I made our bed & S. & I
retired about 12 o’clock.
Wed. 16th. Arose early & did the chamber work & swept our room, moving all the
furniture & the stove. Mr. Moores came in & carried the stove upstairs & charged 25cts.
for doing it. I put the sofa under the mantel, swept the front room & entries & 2 flights of
stairs & brushed up the attic. Dusted our room & at 2.30 o’clock, having changed my
dress I went down to Heredity & Social purity meeting in Bromfield St. Ch. After I came
out I went & paid a bill for mother & bought some drilling for S. & rode home. Mr. S.
came in the evening & staid until 11 o’clock. I went into the front room (I had moved
our night clothes +c in there) & took a bath, after cleaning all the silver ware. I went to
bed & S. came later.
Thurs. 17th. I arose about 7 o’clock & did the chamber work & swept the kitchen &
dusted it & the work room & changed my dress for blue gingham & went out on errands.
Mr. S. had come at 10 o’clock & when S. came he went down for Mr. M. – then we had
dinner & was eating when Mr. S. & Mr. M. came, they went upstairs & we got ready &
went thro’ to S. Ave & rode out to O. Garden & walked from there to Mt. Hope
Cemetary. Saw our lot & the stones & Mr. S. & S. rode back & Mr. M. & I walked to O.
Garden & so picked some more flowers. We looked for them but it had rained a little, so
we rode home & found them here. I got supper & Mrs. Annie Edwards, Willie & a
cousin called when they went we eat supper & then we looked over B. of H. names. Mr.
S. went at 8.30 o’clock as S. was tired & she went to bed. Mr. M. went at 9 o’clock & I
retired after washing the dishes & clearing the table.
Fri. 18th. Arose early & did not know if the washerwoman would come, but got a boiler
full on & brought down the others, when she came, I brought up the tubs & wrung out all
the clothes, mother hung them out. I filled the lamps & got dinner, S. came home to
breakfast. When the woman went I swept the kitchen & did the chamber work & washed
the dishes & folded clothes & changed my dress & took dolls over to the Ch. that was
closed so I went to Alice Howland’s & left them there, bo’t cake +c. & came home & S.
came & we had supper & Mr. S. came & we went to meeting Mr. M. already in the seat.
Mr. S. & S. went home after meeting & sit down stairs. Mr. M. & I went over to Dr. W’s
& borrowed S.S. directory & came home, & we studied the S.S. lesson & he went about
10.20 o’clock & I went down & mixed bread & then retired. We are sleeping in the front
room.
Sat. 19th. Arose about 7 o’clock & baked bread & roasted beef & ironed, did the chamber
work & brushed up our room & swept the kitchen. My right arm has a numb ache in it &
I took the battery for it. It is a lovely day. I washed the dishes & wrote accounts &
dusted & about 4 o’clock went out, calling on Mrs. Stanton, Winkler & Burnham & came
home about 7 o’clock. S. had had her supper and gone back to the store. I eat & went
upstairs & wrote until S. came up. I put buttons on her shoes & we retired about 12
o’clock. I filled the lamps & washed the chimneys today.
Sun. 20th. Arose about 8 o’clock & got breakfast & S. & I went to meeting we came out
& S. & Mr. S. went into Sp. St. S. to teach a class. I walked to the door with them. Did
not speak to Mr. M. as he had not come out when we started along. Came home & wrote
extracts & S. & I went to S.S. S. & Mr. S. came home and after the Children’s Class I
came & found Un. H. & his wife here. When they went S. got supper as Mr. S. staid to
supper. I lay down. Then we went to meeting. I went ahead & found no one leading &
told Mr. Haskard to, & he did. Came down stairs & Mr. M. Mr. S. & S. & I went in to
the Ch. together. Mr. Townsend preached the Bac. Sermon to graduates of Cons. of
Music. House full. Came home & Mr. M. & I set upstairs. S. & Mr. S. were down
stairs. When they went we retired. I spoke to Mr. M. about special prayer against
holding any more fairs in our Ch.
Mon. 21st. Arose early & did the chamber work & washed dishes +c. Looked over box
of our dress goods & sewed some, after dinner I came upstairs & dusted & then set down
& read until my head felt better, then changed my dress & Miss Mitchell & cousin called,
I started up to Bertha’s & heard the Mechanic’s Fair building used by the Met. R.R. Co.
as a repair shop, was burning. Did not go over. Stopped at S.’s store & came home. Got
B. of H. things & after supper went over early. After the meeting Mr. M. said he would
go to the fire with me, so we went. Miss McGregor & Mr. D. started with us but turned
back on H. Ave. We passed slowly by & met Minnie J., her brother & N. Cornell. Came
thro’ Ruggles St. & Camden home. He bid me good night after talking a few minutes & I
came in. Mr. S. had a headache & had gone home before & S. went to bed earlier than
usual.
Tues. 22nd. Arose about 8 o’clock & ironed all the morning, Father is fixing bird cages &
was up all night. After dinner I did the chamber work & then hulled [blank] qts of
strawberries, mother helped. I went after the sugar & posted a letter I had written to N.Y.
Worked until after 7 o’clock & then eat a slice of bread & changed my dress & went to
Class. Mr. M. & I came home & he wrote B. of H. addresses until he went. Then I
mixed bread & retired about 12 o’clock. 7 men have been found in the ruins of the fire.
Lovely weather. S. & Mr. S. are talking now of having Mr. B. marry them instead of Mr.
Townshend & of being married sooner than Oct. 9 if possible.
Wed. 23rd. Arose about 8 o’clock & baked bread & did the chamber work & wrote
accounts & put on preserve to boil & made 24 buttonholes. Then washed dishes &
changed my dress & after supper sit with father, writing sermons. Father asleep –
raining. Retired at 9.30 o’clock.
Thurs. 24th. Arose at 8 o’clock & dusted our room & did the chamber work & swept the
front room thoroughly, putting small things all away. Woman came at noon to wash
paint in th[piece torn off]. I cooked dinner & then gave mother’s room a thorough
sweeping & then washed the dishes, carried boxes down cellar. I cleared the kitchen
stove this morning & put paper in, & father got wood & made up a coal fire. I filled the
lamps & washed chimneys & dusted the front room & work room & brushed the stairs 7
entry & kitchen & dusted. Cooked eggs for supper. I took my dress off before supper &
washed my neck & arms & put it on again after combing my hair. I washed the dishes
after supper & then as father was almost asleep proposed he & I go to bed at 8.30
o’clock. He didn’t, but I started upstairs & wrote accounts & retired about 9.30 o’clock,
after washing my feet.
Fri. 25th. Arose at 7 o’clock & after breakfast filled the lamps & put the flats on & did
the chamber work, & wrote a little & then finished ironing plain clothes. Got dinner,
mother did up the strawberry preserve +c. & I carried them down cellar. After dinner I
sewed on the white work until evening & then sifted flour for bread, changed my dress &
wrote extracts & eat supper & Mr. S. & S. started ahead I after – they waited for me to go
in with them. We sat with Mr. M. & he came home with us. Mr. Douglass’ child died
today. Mr. Hall walked to Shawmut Ave with us. Mr. S. went in down stairs & he went
home about 10 o’clock & she came upstairs & took a bath. Mr. M. & I studied the S.S.
Review until he went. I treated him to cherries. I went down & mixed my bread then &
sat & read until S. was thro’ with her bath & then I went to bed.
Sat. 26 June. Arose about 7.15 o’clock & eat breakfast & baked bread & hung Miss
Gower’s picture & hung over others & put the gilt framed looking glass in our room, then
brushed up the floors & washed dishes & put on prunes to cook, mother cooked squash
& potatoes for dinner & I broiled salmon. After dinner I did the chamber work, the man
came & washed the front windows. I washed the dishes & changed my dress after
sweeping the kitchen & doing the dusting. I went after cake & then went down & called
on Annie Edwards & gave some tracts away on the Square. Was asked to stay to tea,
came home & set the table & made cocoa & worked 16 buttonholes today & did some
errands. I wrote accounts & retired about 10 o’clock.
Sun. 27th. Arose at 8 o’clock 7 cooked breakfast & did the chamber work & S. & I went
to Ch. Mr. M. came thro’ C. St. to W. with me & Mr. S. to the door with S. I studied
lesson & eat dinner & washed dishes & S. & I went to S.S. J. Newcomb came in & went
into the Pastor’s Class. Picnic is to be in W. Roxbury Pk. Thurs. I led the Children’s
Class & came home & Mr. S. staid to supper & we went to Y. Peo’s meeting early. C.C.
did not come until 6.40. Mr. Brodbeck came in later. We went down stairs & all sat
together & came home. I told Mr. M. he was ashamed to wear B. of H. badge & he was
hurt & when we went down stairs I tried to persuade him to wear it but he said he did not
like to see badges on people & we talked & he said he wanted to please me. I said he
could do just as he pleased but I should still have the same feeling about his wearing his
badge. I retired about 11.30 o’clock.
Mon. 28. Arose at 7 o’clock & did the chamber work & ironed starched clothes cooked
dinner & ironed until 4 o’clock. Siskin’s nail broke off & he was bleeding & we bathed
him, father out. I changed my dress & put on silk & S. came home & Mr. S. called & we
rode to N.Y. & N.E. depot & went to Hyde Park to Mr. Habberly’s Temp. Soc’s public
meeting. Came out at 9.15 o’clock & ran & got on the train & then ran & got on the car
at Dudley St. & came home about 9.50 o’clock. Mr. S. came in & I went to bed about
10.30 o’clock.
Tues. 29. Arose at 6 o’clock & cooked breakfast & brushed our room & kitchen &
ironed gingham dress, cooked rice for dinner & we eat, mother out. Heard Robert
Cunningham was dead & to be buried tomorrow. I roasted beef & ironed the other
gingham skirt & washed dishes, filled lamps & washed chimneys. Did the chamber work
& changed my dress after sifting flour for bread. Then went on errands & came home &
set the table & wrote accounts & eat supper & went to Class early & Mr. S. & S. did not
come until 8 o’clock. Gerty R. was in to see S. & they took a walk. Mr. H. did not come
to lead & we read the Vesper Service, Mr. M. & I prayed & then afterwards Mr. S. & we
read a chapter Heb. 6 & all spoke & then at the close s. prayed & we read the Bapt.
Covenant & closed at 8.45 o’clock. We came home & Mr. M. & I sat upstairs & cut
tracts apart for the distribution. He went at 10.30 o’clock & I mixed bread & retired at
12:15 o’clock. Lovely day.
Wed. 30th. Arose at 7 o’clock & chopped hash & set the table for breakfast. Mary
Wilkinson called soon after. Then I baked my bread & did the chamber work after
washing the dishes. Gypsey vomited yesterday & today. I wrote accounts. Mr. M. bro’t
chocolate candy last night; I picked over strawberries & mother made jelly for S. & I
sewed, mother made a cake. Mr. Brodbeck called in the afternoon. I had my pink
gingham skirt on & cambric sack very warm. After supper I washed the dishes & talked
with Mr. S. about picnic & retired about 1 o’clock, as I staid up to mend a flannel.
Thurs. July 1st. Arose about 8.30 o’clock all overslept. I took the clothes down & after
breakfast mother washed & wrung out. I went over to Lamberts at noon & got something
for dinner & came home & cooked dinner. I ripped the hem to pink polonaise & swept
the kitchen & emptied tubs +c. After washing dishes I set the table & changed my dress.
After supper I went down to see Mrs. Rice and staid until 8.45 o’clock. Came home &
found Aunt Nancy here & washed the dishes & folded & sprinkled the clothes. I retired
about 10 o’clock.
Fri. July 2nd. I arose at 7 o’clock & after breakfast I starched 7 pieces & ironed those &
all the other clothes cooked tomatoes for dinner. Washed the dishes, & brushed the
kitchen. Then I dusted our room & sifted flour for bread & changed my dress & wrote
accounts. Mrs. M. called to day, they have hired a house on Copeland St. I did the
chamber work & set the table, filled the lamps. Mr. S. called after supper & we started
for meeting met Mr. M. by the cor. of Washington St. & he walked thro’ with us to Ch. &
in. Mr. S. asked him to go to picnic. Coming home I told him if he did not wish to go he
need not & he said he believed I did not want him, he wished to go. We came in upstairs,
S. & Mr. S. down stairs & we talked & he staid until near 11 o’clock. I told him the
gentleman should be the one to break up friendship before going farther than he intended.
I mixed my bread, & S. tried on her basque & we retired.
Sat. July 3. I arose at 7 o’clock & baked my bread & roasted beef & cooked breakfast &
dinner. I brushed the front room & back one & the kitchen & both flights of stairs &
entries & dusted & washed the kitchen floor & the entries. Changed my dress & went
over to S’s store & did other errands & then came home & had supper. Mother out most
of the day. I did mending 7 wrote accounts & took a bath & retired at 10.30 o’clock. We
decided to go to L.W. at 8 o’clock as S. is not going to work Mon. tho’ the store opens
for a while in the morn.
Sun. July 4. Arose at 8 o’clock & got breakfast & S. & I & father went to Ch.
Communion. Mr. M. walked thro’ to cor. of C. & W. Sts. I came in & when S. came we
did the work & I washed the dishes & we lay down for a while & then went to S.S. I led
the Children’s Class & came home & S. got supper & Mr. S. eat with us. Mother out.
Then we went to Y. Peo’s meeting. Mr. Clough led. Mr. M. spoke first. After meeting
we went down stairs & Mr. Brodbeck had a 4th of July Thanksgiving service. S. & I
spoke near the first ones if not the first. After meeting Mr. M. & I came home, & eat
upstairs, others down. We talked until 10 o’clock & then went down stairs & Mr. M.
asked if I had a better opinion of him +c. I asked “How good an opinion do you want me
to have of you?” & he said “that was for me to decide.” I had washed the dishes after
supper, so retired after he went about 10.30 o’clock. [Written at top of page: Wore white

Mon. 5th. Arose at 5 o’clock but was awake off & on from 3 o’clock as the boys were
celebrating. I went down & got breakfast & prepared our picnic dinner & S. did the
chamber work. Then we changed our dresses & put on white dresses & they came at 8
o’clock & we started for the depot. Left at 9 o’clock & reached L.W. at 10.30 o’clock.
Heard Sam Jones speak & then eat dinner, could not get a boat, & took a walk around the
shore aways & Mr. M. wanted me to tell him what it was I could not make Eng. out of.
When S. & Mr. S. went to swing we sat near the bath house & I told him what he said last
evening. He was holding my hand in his when they came up & sat down near us. We
played ball a few times & I made wreaths for the gentlemen twice. We came home at
4.45 o’clock, reached home about 6.30 o’clock. Mr. M. asked me if I had been to see the
Battle of G. & when I said “No” asked if we could not go some evening & if I would. I
said “Yes.” Mother had been out riding in the morning & afternoon & came soon after
we reached home. I washed the dishes after we were swept off & the young men helped
about the Ice Cream & then Mr. M. churned. Father came & when mother & I had set the
table we had supper & then Mr. M. & I rode down & saw the fireworks on the Common
& then came home & I dished out the ice cream (it was a little after 9 o’clock) & we all
had some upstairs. Mother was asleep downstairs. Mr. S. & S. went down stairs about
10 o’clock & he went home & then Mr. M. started down stairs & he & I talked. S. went
up to bed. Mr. M. said today he had written for the first time about the Misses Devens &
Mr. S. to his mother. Mr. M. put his arm around me & asked if I loved him, before he
went & said he wanted me to tell him tomorrow evening & to pray over it & he asked if
he could kiss me goodnight to shake hands seemed so formal. I told him I tho’t he had. I
came upstairs & retired. Rom. 8-11. 1Cor. 1-5.
Tues. 6th. Arose at 6.30 o’clock & set the dishes off the table & set it for breakfast &
warmed corn & beans, after breakfast I cleared the table & brushed the floor & came up
& wrote accounts. Mr. M. carried Candy, Oranges & bananas yesterday, he asked why I
did not study short hand, & if I would if he did). I then did the chamber work & cooked
dinner. It is intensely hot today. While S. & I were eating, mother had gone out about 10
o’clock. Mrs. M. was here, Miss Lottie Russell came & had bought some ice cream for
friends & found them out, so came here with it. She staid here with me until 6.30
o’clock. then I sifted flour & got supper. Mother had come home about 4 o’clock sick &
gone to bed, but she got up & dressed & went out to her lodge & did not come home until
11.10 o’clock. I went to Class & as Mr. H. did not come until after 8 o’clock we
commenced the meeting. Mr. M. came thro’ with me & in. Mr. S. & S. staid down
stairs. Mr. M. & I talked awhile & then he said I was to tell him my answer. I said I
liked him better than any one else I knew, that I had always felt that the Lord would
never let me have an offer of marriage without it was for me to accept & I had not had
one. Then he told me he loved me & if I would be willing to marry any one so poor he
wanted me. I told him finally that when the 8 yrs. was up if he still loved me I would
marry him anyway. But I don’t see what he sees in me to love & I know I should want to
be loved better than any one else & forever & ever, death not parting. He thinks mother
& father do not like him very well & wondered what they would say & thinks prehaps he
had better [torn] until better acquainted with them before speaking to them of his desire.
He w[torn] decide about a ring next time. I want [torn] wear my own & he thinks he
ought to buy one. He left after 10 o’clock & I went down & mixed bread & retired about
12 o’clock.
Wed. 7th. Arose at 6.30 o’clock & cooked S.’s breakfast & we eat & I baked my bread &
washed the dishes. Mrs. [torn] came to get Mother to go down town with her & Mrs.
Copeland came to & they went. I wrote accounts. Father not up yet. Did the chamber
work & wrote letters to Mary M., Maggie McBride & Mrs. S. & a postal to N.Y.
Changed my dress & posted them & got supper. Mr. S. came & spoke of being out with
friends from N.Y. I did an errand while out fo[torn] M., & washed the dishes afterwards.
Retired about 12 o’clock. I want to s[torn] a letter & picture W. M. has, if it is best for
me to. I have prayed he might bring them up. Went to Teacher’s meeting.
Thurs. Arose early & collected clothes, bro’t up tubs +c & filled them. Mother put on
one boiler full of clothes & rinsed them out once & then went out working. I washed &
hung out. Got thro’ & swept the kitchen & set the table for dinner about 1 o’clock. Then
I did the chamber work & washed dishes & bo’t twist & made 17 buttonholes & changed
my dress. Mr. S. came having been out rowing & S. & I said [torn] could have gone, so
he invited us for tomorrow afternoon & I went up to get Mrs. M’s waist & found her sick,
mother had gone from there. Came home near 9 o’clock & washed dishes & retried
about 11 o’clock.
Fr. 9th. Arose early & cooked S’s breakfast & did the chamber work & brushed up
kitchen & filled lamps & washed chimneys & starched & ironed our two white waists.
Then got dinner & changed my dress & Mr. S. came & S. & I rode down in West End
Car & hired a boat for 2 hours. Then rode home & I got supper & sifted flour & Mr. S.
came & S. & I went to meeting. Mr. B. read 116 Ps. We all spoke. Mr. M. came in &
upstairs & told me he had bro’t the picture & letter if I would like to see them. Finally S.
called us to come down & have some water melon & I said “let us pray” and we knelt & I
prayed that God might direct us in all things then we went down. I mixed my bread
while they eat. He asked me what I decided about a ring & I told him he could do as he
chose. He will wait until his birthday July 17th. He went about 10.40 & I came upstairs
& told S. he had proposed & she said she knew I would make him a good wife. Retired.
Sat. 10th. Arose about 6.45 o’clock & cooked S’s breakfast & swept the kitchen & entry
& baked bread & roasted beef & father got up, then I did the chamber work & ironed
clothes & starched & ironed 3 white skirts & cooked dinner & brushed our rooms &
kitchen & dusted & washed dishes & chimneys & filled lamps & changed my dress &
went to Mrs. M.’s in a car, did not stay long & walked down did errands. Swept the entry
& side walk & cooked supper & Aunt Nancy & Jane came, after they went, father & I eat
& washed dishes & dusted all the rooms & then came upstairs & wrote accounts &
mended clothes & took a bath & retired about 11.30 o’clock.
Sun. 11th Arose at 7.30 o’clock & cooked breakfast & did the work & dressed & S. & I
& father afterwards went to church. Mr. M. walked to W. St. with father & I. Came
home & S. & I lay down awhile, then got ready & went to YP’s & down stairs. Came
home & Mr. M. came in. He asked what kind of a ring I wanted & took S’s old ring to
get the size. We prayed before he left. Then I retired about 11 o’clock.
Mon. 12th. Arose about 9 o’clock & did the work & filled lamps +c. Then went out to
Mrs. Chase’s for mother, rode back as far as Bertha’s & called there & then walked down
& left Mr. Day’s Chau. He had just got home from Ct. Came home & eat dinner & did
the work & went down to W.C.T.U.’s last meeting for the Summer. Came home & gave
out tracts on the way. Then wrote up B. of H. accounts & got things ready, set the table
& eat & started for B. of H. Aunt N. & J. & Annie there, also Mr. Habberley, Fred & Mr.
Pitman. Mr. M. Father & I walked home together. W. was not coming in but finally said
he had a sermon of Mr. Haynes he wanted me to read & came in. We sat upstairs & I
read it aloud. “After Dark.” He went about 10 o’clock after we had knelt & he prayed.
Then I retired about 11.30 o’clock.
Tues. 13th. Arose at 7.30 o’clock & after breakfast wrote accounts & made 19
buttonholes & cooked dinner, carried buttonholes in to mother & came home & washed
the dishes & filled lamps & washed chimneys & sifted flour, brushed up the floor &
dusted the rooms & did the chamber work & wrote accounts. Eat supper & overcasted all
S’s buttonholes in gray dress & then went to Class. S. & Mr. S. came later. Came home
about 8.45 o’clock & W. said he guessed he would not come in I ought to go to bed early.
I started up stairs & said “Good night,” he did come up, but did not kiss me until after we
had talked some time, & I felt bad, & said I did not believe he [torn] for me & he was
hurt & we talked & prayed that we might not hurt each other’s feelings. He went down
stairs & I went in & asked father if he would examine his head [torn] he came up
tomorrow evening. S. is going to Brookline & mother to Lynn, father said he would see
& he is coming up. I mixed my bread & retired at 10.50.
Wed. Arose at 7.30 o’clock & after breakfast baked bread & swept entries & stairs &
kitchen & brushed up front room & mother’s room & dusted all & did the chamber work
& cooked dinner & washed dishes, filled lamps & washed chimneys & went down town
after changing my dress. Started at 2.10 & returned at 5.20 o’clock. Bo’t a book
“Imitation of Christ” for Will’s birthday. Came in & put away things & wrote accounts
& washed dishes & cooked supper & father & I eat; I go[torn] thro’ & changed my dress
& Will came & we went upstairs & then when father was thro’ eating we went down &
washed the dishes +c. & then we went upstairs & father examined W’s head, soon, after
talking awhile father went down & I made buttonholes awhile & then W. & I talked.
When he went I went down stairs & then wrote accounts & retired about 11.30 o’clock.
Thurs. 15th Arose about 8 o’clock & took a bath, then eat breakfast & sprinkled &
starched clothes & ironed off & [next line mostly torn off] w slips & sewed on one,
cooked dinner [after?] 5 o’clock & washed the dishes & swept the kitchen & came
upstairs. I did the rest of the chamber work [torn] changed my dress & wrote accounts.
Feet are tired. I worked on S’s buttonholes. “I know not the way that’s before me, God
hangs a mist o’er my eyes, & so at each step I take, He makes new scenes arise, & every
joy that He sends me comes as a sweet & glad Surprise.” “So I go on not knowing, I
would not if I might, I had rather walk in the dark with God than go alone by sight.”
Then set the table, eat supper & washed the dishes. Mr. S. came, & S. & father & Mr. S.
went up to Aunt Nancy’s. I retired at 8.30 o’clock. Mother came about 9.30 o’clock &
Mrs. Chase called & she went thro’ to the car with her & father thought she was upstairs
& locked the door & when she came back she talked & awoke me.
Fri. 16th. Arose at 6.30 o’clock & cooked breakfast & cleared the table & did the
chamber work & filled lamps & washed chimneys & rote accounts & cleared the front
room a little, & overcasted 21 buttonholes & sewed on S’s dress, then washed the dishes
& sewed for mother & changed my dress & set the table for supper & eat. Mr. S. [most
of line torn off]
