First Semester Fiction Unit: Facing Monsters

Tuesday, September 2 nd

Kick-off to fiction unit. Review elements of fiction. Take notes and highlight during discussion time. View the film, Secondhand

Lions, and analyze for elements of fiction. We will use this lesson as the fiction portion of our “Literary Analysis in Film” study.

You will complete the handouts provided which will analyze the elements of fiction that are presented in the film. We will use this worksheet as our “umbrella” for the elements that we will examine throughout the unit! This will also serve as a springboard for discussion throughout many units during the year.

Wednesday, September 3 rd

AR Reading Time

Complete the film, Secondhand Lions, and finish charts. Class discussion on the elements of fiction that are seen in the movie.

Review short story elements and discuss. Complete quiz and crossword. Receive unit vocabulary. Complete the “Words to

Own” worksheet before reading.

Read, analyze and evaluate “The Most Dangerous Game” on page 12. Apply reading skills: dialogue with text, predictions.

Apply elements of literature: conflict – internal and external, title, foreshadowing and character.

Grammar Element: While reading, make a list of fifteen vivid verbs onto notebook paper. What “dead verbs” do you think each of these words replaced? Why did Connell use these vivid verbs?

Homework: Study your literary terms. Read your AR novel.

Thursday, September 4 th

AR Reading Time

Complete the assessment for Secondhand Lions. (Test grade)

Complete “The Most Dangerous Game.” Class discussion with study guides.

Complete the “Compare/Contrast Graphic Organizer” to analyze the characters of Rainsford and Zaroff.

Homework: Study your literary terms. Read your AR novel.

Friday, September 5 th

AR Reading Time

Literary Terms Test – This is a major test grade for the first nine weeks! When finished, complete all assignments for “The Most

Dangerous Game.”

Creative project: Focus on Setting - Create a map of the island. Using the paper provided, create a land map of what you believed the island would look like, based on the clues in the story. Present your maps to the class. Explain the elements of setting that you included in your version of the island map.

Homework: Read your AR novel.

Monday, September 8 th

AR Reading Time

Complete the “Words to Own” worksheet before reading.

Read, analyze and evaluate “A Sound of Thunder” on page 34. Apply reading skills: cause and effect and identify main events.

Apply elements of literature: climax, title, figures of speech, vivid description and message.

While reading, complete the study guide.

Homework: Study vocabulary. Read your AR novel.

Tuesday, September 9 th

AR Reading Time

UNIT VOCABULARY TEST – You will need to know how to spell and define.

Complete reading of “A Sound of Thunder.” Answer all study questions and complete the “Cause and Effect” worksheet.

Get into groups and discuss your answers. Class discussion following group time to discuss all worksheets.

Homework: Complete the Grammar Link worksheet for “The Interlopers.”

Wednesday, September 10 th

AR Reading Time

Complete the “Words to Own” worksheet before reading.

Read, analyze and evaluate “The Interlopers” on page 94. Apply reading skills: analyze a surprise ending, identify transitional words, suspense, simile/metaphor, antagonist/protagonist and making inferences.

Answer all study questions and complete the “Graphic Organizer for Active Reading” worksheet.

Homework: Read your AR novel.

AR Reading Time

Read, analyze and evaluate “Poison” on page 80. Apply reading skills: monitor your reading by asking questions. Apply elements of literature: suspense, conflicts, and historical context.

Monday, September 13 th :

SHORT STORY UNIT TEST – This test will assess your understanding of the short story standards that will be presented on the EOC. You will answer questions based on the selections that you have read and you will be asked to read a new selection, “from Black Boy” on page 105, which is an autobiography, to compare themes across genres.
