Utilizing Institutional Assessment Data to Help Drive an Enrollment Management Initiative
Wednesday, July 22nd ~ 1-3 EDT
Overview
Over the past decade the SUNY College at Oneonta has utilized institutional assessment data
to help drive an enrollment management initiative which has enjoyed considerable success.
During a time when the aggregate growth in New York State high school graduates totaled
approximately 12%, freshmen applications at SUNY Oneonta have grown over 95% (from 6,400
to 12,500). At the same time, the College’s acceptance rate decreased from almost 80% to
37% while freshmen to sophomore retention increased from 61% to 82%, with similar size growth
in the College’s four, five, and six year graduation rates. Mean freshmen class high school
averages have grown from 81.99% to 90.40% while mean combined SAT scores have
increased 140 points, to 1137. As a result of these and other related institutional performance
indicators, undergraduate enrollment at Oneonta has grown over 15% at the same time that
the annual student inputs needed to drive this larger enrollment have decreased.
Objectives (what will participants learn?)
Participants will leave with an understanding of the role that the utilization of institutional
assessment data can play in improving student recruitment and increasing student retention.
Specific institutional assessment tools utilized by Oneonta will be analyzed and their
applications will be discussed. Lastly, participants will leave with the ability to assess whether
their home institution is prepared and ready to engage a data driven enrollment
management initiative.
