Course Name: Engineering Math III
Course Description: Vector algebra, calculus of functions of several variables,
partial derivatives, directional derivatives, gradient, multiple integration, line and surface integrals, Green’s
and Stokes’ theorems.
Required Texts:
Stewart, Calculus: Early Vectors, Preliminary Edition
Meeting Times/Locations: The lecture meets Tues/Thurs !!:10-12:25 in HELD 107
Prerequisite: MATH 152 or equivalent
Calculator Policy: Calculators WILL be allowed on all exams and assignments, but sufficient analytic work
must be shown to receive full credit. Calculators will be checked for useful stored formulas during exams.
Course Objectives: This course is to provide students with quantitative and problem-solving skills of integral
calculus, power series, and 3-D vectors. At the conclusion of this course, students should be able to:
I. Visualize surfaces in 3-dimensional space.
II. Know techniques of partial differentiation and apply them to a variety of applications, including
engineering applications.
III. Know techniques of double and triple integrals and apply them to a variety of applications,
including engineering applications.
IV. Compute and visualize line and surface integrals and apply theorems related to them in a variety of
applications, including engineering applications.

Attendance: Attendance of lectures is important. If you must miss class on days something is to be turned in,
please contact me as soon as you know. I suggest you find a study partner or two to get notes on days you have
to miss. Completed notes will be posted on my web page IF you do not use these as a substitute to attending
class.
Make-up Policy: If you miss an exam, you must contact me within 48 hours. Exams must be made up within
30 calendar days and require appropriate documentation of a university-excused absence. Make-up policy for
quizzes is discussed below.
Scholastic Dishonesty: Remember the Aggie Code of Honor: An Aggie does not lie, cheat, or steal, or
tolerate those who do! There will be many opportunities for you to work together in an appropriate manner.
However, each student is responsible for turning in their own unique work. During exams, you are not allowed
to receive any kind of assistance from anyone (OR have any useful formulas stored on your calculator!). Any
instance of scholastic dishonesty will be handled according to the processes outlined on the Honor Code
website at http://aggiehonor.tamu.edu/Faculty/WhatToDo.aspx.
Expectations: I expect you to have read the material and stepped through the examples before class, and I
expect you to treat me with respect. You can expect me to be prompt and consistent in grading and treat you
with respect.
Weekly Schedule: The (tentative) weekly schedule is posted on the MATH 251 course homepage at
http://www.math.tamu.edu/courses/math251/currentsched.html
Exams: Dates for the exams are Thursday 29 Sep, Tuesday 25 Oct, and Thursday 1 Dec during class.
Tentative content of each exam is available at the weekly schedule linked above
Final Exam: A comprehensive final exam will be given in HELD 109 on Monday 12 Dec 8:00am-10:00am.
See http://admissions.tamu.edu/Registrar/General/FinalSchedule.aspx#_Fall_2011 for full Final Exam
schedule
Homework: Suggested homework is posted on the MATH 251 course homepage. These problems are for
practice and will not be handed in; however, quiz and exam questions may be similar to suggested homework
problems. (NOTE: If you purchase a student solution manual, it is recommended that you do not open it until
AFTER you have attempted the question on your own!)
In addition, there will be online homework assignments due every Monday (starting 5 Sept) at 11:55:00pm
(NO late submissions accepted!). You either purchased a Lifetime access code previously (meaning you may
continue to use WebAssign with this text at no additional charge), or you need to purchase a code (Lifetime or
Semester) online. The URL for online homework is http://www.math.tamu.edu/courses/eHomework/. Only the
highest 20 homework section grades will be counted (about 14% of the total grade).
Take-home Quizzes: Each Tuesday (except for Week 1 and exam weeks), you will receive a take-home quiz
over the online homework sections completed the previous Monday. This quiz will be due at the beginning of
class Thursday. Late quizzes may be turned in up to 5pm Friday for a 30% penalty. You may not receive help
from anyone except me, but you may use notes and calculators. Only the highest 10 quiz grades will be
counted; therefore, missed quizzes may not be made up. NOTE: on exam weeks, the online homework
sections will combine to count as a quiz instead (with NO late submissions allowed!)
Disabilities: The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) is a federal anti-discrimination statute that provides
comprehensive civil rights protection for persons with disabilities. Among other things, this legislation
requires that all students with disabilities be guaranteed a learning environment that provides for
reasonable accommodation of their disabilities. If you believe you have a disability requiring an
accommodation, please contact Disability Services, in Cain Hall, Room B118, or call 845-1637. For
additional information visit http://disability.tamu.edu.
