Its flowing lines combine to create a distinctive form, with strong proportions and an immediate sense of movement and balance. The Veloster’s lines are bold and dynamic creating a form that is very different from existing coupes and hatchbacks. At the front, the bold bumper design, hexagonal radiator grille and striking LED lamp clusters create a thoroughly modern expression. From the side, the Veloster has an aerodynamic silhouette with short front overhang and sloping roofline. The slim and raked back window graphic and muscular wheel arches add to the sporty profile Its smooth lines are uninterrupted by the hidden handle on the rear passenger door. From the rear, twin central exhausts, reflectors set into the wheel arches, rear combination lamps curved to follow the bodywork and ‘cutaways’ in the tailgate are distinctive touches that create a unique combination. With Veloster, not only does the design create emotional appeal, it also delivers a form that enhances the aerodynamics of the car. Extensive testing has resulted in drag being minimised by the addition of a discrete rear spoiler, air-flow deflectors in front of each tyre and a flat under-floor beneath the engine bay. Aerodynamic drag is a highly competitive Cd 0.32. The asymmetric 1+2 door configuration for Veloster is adapted for left-hand and right-hand drive markets, ensuring that customers not only benefit from the great practicality of the rear door but also from the high levels of occupant safety for which Hyundai is well known. 6 In the UK, Veloster is offered with a choice of eight exterior colours. Two solid colours, White Crystal and Sunflower, and – at an extra cost of £445 – metallic Sleek Silver, Veloster Red , pearlescent Phantom Black, Vitamin C, Green Apple and Blue Ocean colours are available. COMFORT & CONVENIENCE Sporty yet refined cabin integrating high-tech interior features Despite its distinctive coupe styling, the designers were determined that the new Veloster would also be a practical car for everyday use by a broad range of consumers with widely varying lifestyles. The interior design has been crafted to meet the demands of younger buyers with high-tech gadgets and technological features stylishly integrated within the cabin – ensuring the Veloster is a fun car in which to travel, whether behind the wheel or in a passenger seat. Clever packaging of the interior means the Veloster offers class-leading head and leg room in the front and rear shoulder room and will seat four adults in comfort. Cargo capacity is 440 litres (SAE) with the rear seats upright. The rear seats are easily accessed through the rear (nearside) door and are sculpted to accommodate two occupants with a central storage tray and twin cupholders. The backrest is split 60/40 and folds down flat onto the cushion, enabling up to 984 (SAE) litres of cargo to be carried. Hyundai’s new coupe offers an extensive specification with numerous technology features as standard – including some that are only available as extra-cost options on competitor vehicles. Veloster comes with 17-inch alloy wheels and LED daytime running lights, plus climate control air-conditioning, reversing sensors, projection headlamps, Bluetooth connectivity, electric windows and steering wheel-mounted remote controls among its comprehensive features. Veloster Sport features 18-inch alloy wheels, a panoramic glass sunroof, black leather upholstery, heated front seats, cruise control, keyless entry and sporty alloy pedals as part of the £2,500 package of additional equipment. The Veloster utilises the latest multimedia technology to allow occupants to stay in touch with news, friends and to enjoy music and films. Top centre of the centre stack is a 7-inch TFT touch-screen which displays a host of information to the user. The audio/video system 7 supports radio, CD, MP3 and a range of external devices thanks to an AUX, USB, iPod, RCA and Bluetooth® connectivity with voice recognition. The optional satellite navigation and rear-view camera system also use this 7-inch highresolution screen to clearly display information. ENGINES & TRANSMISSIONS GDi delivers power and economy, plus new dual-clutch transmission All versions of Veloster in the UK market are powered by a 140 PS1.6-litre GDi petrol engine. This all-aluminium DOHC Gamma unit delivers improved fuel economy and reduced emissions, plus long-term durability and excellent NVH levels – similar to a multi-point fuel-injected engine. Equipped with high-pressure petrol direct injection, the 1,591cc four cylinder engine generates maximum power at 6,300 rpm and maximum torque (167 Nm) at 4,850 rpm. An offset crankshaft design reduces internal friction losses and enhances fuel economy. Rewardingly responsive to the throttle, this new engine accelerates the Veloster to 62 mph in under 10 seconds for the manual car and only 10.3 seconds for the new dual-clutch transmission (DCT) version. Top speeds are 125 and 124 mph respectively. Fuel consumption on the combined cycle is 43.5 mpg (manual) and 44.1 mpg (DCT), with CO2 emissions of 148 and 145 g/km. The all-new Veloster is also available with Hyundai’s fuel-saving Blue Drive™ ecotechnology, including Intelligent Stop & Go (ISG), low rolling-resistance tyres and an alternator management system. The manual transmission Blue Drive model achieves fuel economy of 47.9 mpg (combined) and CO2 emissions of just 137 g/km. To maximize fuel economy, reduce emissions and enhance refinement, every Veloster comes with a six-speed transmission. Standard equipment is a maintenance-free manual gearbox, filled with low-viscosity oil and fitted with a ‘high’ sixth ratio (0.727:1) to minimize engine revs at cruising speeds, benefitting refinement and fuel economy. As a £1,250-option, customers can specify Hyundai’s first dual-clutch transmission (DCT). This six-speed unit offers drivers all the advantages of a fully automatic gearbox together with the engaging characteristics of a responsive manual when ‘manual mode’ is selected for clutch-less sequential gear changes. In both modes the shift quality is super-smooth. Other benefits of DCT include an improvement in fuel efficiency. 8 Veloster DCT models are equipped with steering wheel-mounted paddles which enable the driver to change gear without taking his/her hands off the steering wheel. Pulling the righthand paddle towards the driver changes up, while pulling the left-hand paddle changes down. The DCT transmission weighs a modest 35kg more than the manual gearbox but this additional weight (just 2.9% of the car’s kerb weight) has no effect on the coupe’s agile handling. SUSPENSION & RUNNING GEAR Agile handling and smooth ride for a responsive drive Hyundai’s Veloster chassis engineers have exploited the robust all-new bodyshell structure and the new model’s long wheelbase (2,650 mm), to ensure that the new coupe’s steering, handling and ride deliver a responsive drive, with well balanced characteristics and levels of refinement to rival the best in class. The rack and pinion steering system is speed-sensitive and features electric power assistance. It requires just 2.88 turns of the 370 mm steering wheel from lock-to-lock, with a turning circle of 10.4 metres. The steering’s weight has been engineered to provide good feel and precise vehicle control, with substantial feedback during out-of-town motoring and low effort during parking and city driving. The Veloster’s suspension features fine-tuned developments of well-tried systems. At the front, compact, lightweight MacPherson strut suspension is employed, with off-set, side-load springs to reduce friction and rebound settings designed to minimize roll. At the rear, a compact coupled torsion beam axle with the mono-tube dampers and coil springs mounted separately to more effectively disperse input loads, also minimizes intrusion into the cabin and luggage bay. To reduce NVH, the front suspension is mounted on a lightweight hydro-formed sub-frame, which is attached to the bodyshell by six carefully tuned rubber bushes to help isolate the cabin and its occupants from irregularities in the road surface. Every Veloster is equipped with an all-disc braking system, backed up by ESP (electronic stability programme), ABS (anti-lock braking system) and BAS (brake assist system) as standard. For maximum stopping power, 280 mm ventilated front discs and 262 mm solid rear discs are fitted. 9 For optimum grip, Veloster comes with generous 215-section tyres mounted on 17- or 18inch diameter alloy wheels – depending on model. REFINEMENT New bodyshell and acoustic treatments for high levels of refinement The foundations for Veloster’s high levels of refinement and responsive handling lie in its allnew bodyshell. This structure features increased use of ultra-high strength steel together with advanced engineering techniques that have resulted in superior torsional and flexural rigidity which benefits ride, handling, refinement and crash protection. Driving enjoyment is heavily dependent on minimising interior noise levels and damping vibrations before they reach the cabin occupants. To counteract the effects of noise, vibrations and harshness – from the wind, mechanical components and the road surface – Hyundai engineers adopted a multi-path approach. Body vibration and sound resonation were reduced by adopting optimised swelling sealer in key cavities for sound transmission, thicker damping materials at selected locations throughout the bodyshell and air-permeable carpets in the cabin. In addition, the dashboard bulkhead is fitted with a triple layer sound pad, the door handles are shaped to smooth the airflow, a larger resonator and U-shaped engine air intake duct cut induction noise and turbulence generated by the open sunroof’s air-deflector is reduced by adopting a single-mesh design. SAFETY Active and passive technologies ensure a Euro NCAP 5-Star rating The Hyundai Veloster is equipped with the latest active and passive safety technologies to ensure maximum protection for its occupants at all times. Active safety features, fitted as standard in the UK, include ESP (electronic stability programme), ABS (anti-lock braking system), BAS (brake assist system), TCS (traction 10 control system), HAC (hill assist control) to prevent roll-back when starting on an incline, and VSM (vehicle stability management). VSM is a new ‘active‘ feature which counters the effects of asymmetric grip on slippery mixed road surfaces and helps the vehicle stay in a stable position by reducing the amount of steering assistance (if the driver is applying too much steering effort) and increasing the assistance (if the driver is applying too little effort). To assist drivers during reversing or parking manoeuvres, three active systems are available. Reversing sensors in the rear bumper, which give an audible warning when approaching obstructions, are fitted to all models. Sport models fitted with the optional Media Pack also feature a new rear-view parking camera. The camera has a 130-degree, wide-angle lens which transmits images to the centre stack’s navigation display screen. In terms of passive safety, every Veloster is fitted as standard with six airbags – front, side and curtain – and front seat ‘active’ head restraints to minimize whiplash injuries. With its stiffer, stronger all-new bodyshell and new dual centre rail roof and B-pillar bracing cross-members, Hyundai engineered the Veloster to continue the company’s excellent safety record. Subsequently, Veloster was awarded a five-star rating in Euro NCAP safety tests – the maximum score. Across the four main test categories, Veloster rated 96% (Adult), 89% (Child), 49% (Pedestrian) and 71% (Safety Assist), with scores in the ‘adult occupant’ and ‘child occupant’ categories putting Veloster ahead of segment rivals such as the Volkswagen Scirocco, Vauxhall Astra GTC and Citroen DS4.
