LMPD’s 5th Division Newsletter Updates
Tornado Safety Tips
22 tornados have been reported in the Kentuckiana area so far this year. The yearly average is
7. Please read LMPD’s tornado safety tips for you and your family.
 Prepare for tornadoes by gathering emergency supplies such as food, water, medications,
batteries and flashlights.
 When a tornado approaches, anyone in its path should take shelter indoors – preferably in
a basement or an interior first-flood room or hallway.
 Avoid windows and seek additional protection by getting underneath large, solid pieces of
furniture.
 Avoid automobiles and mobile homes, which provide almost no protection from tornadoes.
 Those caught outside should lie flat in a depression or on other low ground and wait for
the storm to pass.
Teenage suspects steal SUV
On March 14th, A Police pursuit of a stolen vehicle led officers to a busy part of St. Matthews. The
pursuit began around 12:30pm near Lexington Road and Cannons Lane and ended along

vehicle. 5th Division Officers immediately apprehended one subject while another suspect fled the
scene on foot. The second suspect was captured a short time later. The two teenage suspects had
stolen the SUV they were in from a family member.
Officer Grignon Remembered
Seven years ago, LMPD Officer Peter Grignon was shot and killed while investigating an incident in
which a car was seen driving through a homeowner's yard. Officer Grignon responded to the
scene at approximately 0630 hours. After a short search, he located the suspected vehicle
burning nearby. Moments later, he was confronted by two subjects and shot twice in the head
and neck. One of the suspects then committed suicide. The second suspect was taken into
custody. He was transported to University Hospital where he succumbed to his wounds about two
hours later. Peter lost his life serving this community. His platoon recently honored his memory
by placing a wreath at his grave site located in Cave Hill Cemetery.
