Mr. Bitton bittonj@lincolnps.org Room C-26 2014-2015 This course emphasizes facility with algebraic expressions and functions. Topics will include variation, solving systems, matrices, and linear, quadratic, polynomial, exponential, logarithmic, and trigonometric functions. Concepts are examined as tools for modeling real-world situations. Graphing is emphasized and geometrical ideas learned in previous courses are applied to problem-solving. Students will need a scientific calculator for this course; however it is recommended that students have their own TI-83 calculator. Follow classroom procedures. Be kind, polite and respectful to others. All school rules are to be followed in this class. Listen carefully and follow directions. Try to take care of lavatory and personal needs between classes. Be seated and ready to work when the bell rings. Failure to attend a scheduled detention will result in a disciplinary referral. Cheating is absolutely prohibited. If you are caught cheating, you will receive a zero for the assignment and parents will be notified. The policy of the math department is to prohibit cell phones access during all assessments and review of those assessments. Cell phones will be collected before the assessment is handed out. Cell phones will be returned after the assessment or review is completed. Failure to comply will result in disciplinary action and the assessment may not be given. Improper behavior will be dealt with in the following manner: First, a verbal warning will be issued and your seat may be moved. If the offending behavior continues a detention will be issued and finally you will be asked to the immediate referral center. Bring appropriate materials to class each day. You will need a notebook, a pen and pencil, and a graphing calculator. Any instructional materials handed out should be put into a dedicated math notebook or folder. Returned homework should be retained in your notebook or binder as a resource to study for tests and quizzes. Complete assigned work and submit it on time. Homework assignments will be announced in class and posted on lincolnlions.org. All written homework will be reviewed the next class period after it is assigned. Homework will be collected for a grade on a random basis. It must be neatly written, labeled and corrected to receive full credit. All problems must be attempted. In addition, there will be a significant amount of homework assigned through the IXL and Khan Academy websites. If you are absent on the day of an assessment, you will take it on the day you return. If you are absent for an extended period of time see me for make up. In the event that you are absent, it is your responsibility to get the assignments, notes or handouts you may have missed from a classmate or me. Grading Policy Grades will be determined on a total point basis. Your grade will be calculated by dividing the total points you received for the quarter by the total possible points available. Approximate point values are as follows: Assessments 30-100, Homework = 10-20. Retake opportunities will be given for those students who fail an assessment (less than 70%). The retake must be completed after school within the week following the notification of the grade on the assessment. Grades will be adjusted to a maximum of 70%.
