Goals 1. To understand the New Testament in the light of its historical and cultural context. 2. To interpret the message of the New Testament from a Christian perspective. 3. To develop basic skills in the study of the Bible. Objectives 1. Become knowledgeable regarding the historical, political, cultural, and theological developments in the world during the intertestamental and New Testament period. 2. Learn the twenty-seven books of the New Testament and be able to recall the story, describe the major characters, state the major themes and identify the significant features of each book. 3. Demonstrate familiarity with basic information about each book of the New Testament, including authorship, date, occasion, purpose, recipients, and type of writing. Class Expectations 1. Cell phones must be turned off. 2. NO text messaging during class. 3. Attend class. 4. Be on time. Excessive tardiness will work against you. 5. Appropriate dress in class is expected according to the student handbook, page 53-54. Example: (a) No caps/hats worn during class; and (b) all clothing worn in class must meet University standards. Textbooks 1. The New Testament. The NIV Study Bible is recommended. Reading assignments from The NIV Study Bible will be designated by “B”. 2. .Robert Thomas and Stanley Gundry. A Harmony of the Gospels. “H” will designate assignments from the Harmony. 3. Atlas of the Bible Lands – Revised Edition. Course Requirements 1. Read the entire New Testament. 2. Read A Harmony of the Gospels, by Robert Thomas and Stanley Gundry. 3. Take accurate notes at each class lecture. 4. There will be four tests. Each test will be a final. Grading Letter grades for the course will be determined according to the following scale, in accordance with “The Grading System,” on page 64 in the 2005-2006 Catalog of the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor: A = 91-100 B = 81-90 C = 71-80 D = 61-70 F = 60 and Below Attendance Enrollment in this class presupposes your ability to attend class on a regular basis. Attendance can affect your final grade, either positively or negatively. If you are borderline on a grade, high attendance can help to raise your grade. If you miss more than four (4) class sessions without an excused absence, your final grade will be lowered one grade. When you miss a class you are responsible for finding out what was covered and any changes in schedule or assignments. If you miss a test, you will be allowed to make it up “only” if you have an excused absence. The reason should be submitted in writing and the make-up test taken promptly. The make-up test will be different from the original test.
