ACTION PLAN: SWOT Analysis STRENGTHS (internal) WEAKNESSES (internal) Organisational skills - organising a studio as Floor Manager, and carrying out pre production planning for documentary production, as well as extensive research for ‘Cities of Conflict’ documentary. Excellent reliability and punctuality - Vital for company employment, always present for production meetings with appropriate work and tasks completed on time. Communication with clients/public - I had to communicate and arrange meetings with our subject for our documentary, and make sure that they were comfortable with the process. Clear communication was a vital skills when being a mentor for first year students in the television studio. Adapting and dealing with problems -As a floor manager I had to deal with items for our magazine show falling through, guests dropping out, and it is important to be adaptable in a pressured environment. I had to adapt to filming in a room I had not seen until the day of filming for the performance of ‘One Hundred Days Before The Night’ and had to adapt my camera position to meet the constraints of the environment OPPORTUNITIES (external) Film festivals and events - I..e FourDocs, I should submit more of my work to festivals in order to distribute it and get the attention of commissioners/clients. I should also make use of fuding streams, and pitch ideas to outlets such as Sheffield Doc Fest (this will be done for the upcoming ‘Cities of Conflict’ project.) Making contacts - Through work experience and university I am constantly compiling a list of contacts that can aid me in producing my own work or other job opportunities, such as other students, lecturers and outside contacts. Work placements - A good way to make contacts and become confident in the world of work, looking at local studios and media companies around Coventry, Birmingham, Northampton as these are practical for me, I have also signed up to BBC work placement alerts and have applied for several placements. Collaborating with other students - In areas that I am not as confident, such as photography, new media, I can work with other students, such as those I have mentored as part of 216MC, to gain new skills and work contacts and widen my expertise. Communicating with quieter members of a team – Occasionally I tend to pay more attention to those more vocal in a group, and I know that I should take extra effort to listen to everyone’s input, particularly those who are not so confident and vocal. Vocalising concerns and issues within production - If I have concerns I tend to keep them to myself, rather than seek the help of others. I should ask other members of my team if I have problems, as this makes production more efficient. Assertiveness in decision making - An example of which being editorial judgement, I often take time to make decisions and feel under pressure when I have to make them on the spot. THREATS (external) Lack of nearby job opportunities - I may have to look further a field for jobs with better prospects in larger cities such as London, which would mean commuting, if I am looking at jobs in the broadcasting sector. By looking online for opportunities, I kow that this will be the case. Not sufficient equipment for freelance work - I currently rely on renting equipment such as sound recorders and cameras from university, I will have to find somewhere from which to rent equipment or look into purchasing my own in order to be a successful freelancer. Lack of funding for large projects – Although I have looked into funding, application is usually very strict and prior experience is needed, so I will need to build up a good portfolio to stand a chance of receiving funding for my own projects in the future.
