INTRODUCTION
Education is a core subject of the Diploma Teacher Education course. It is
therefore designed to enable the learner to be firmly grounded' in the principles of
the teaching profession and managing the learning process. It exposes the
learner to a wide range of educational practices that enhance competence and
equip the individual with pedagogical skills necessary for
an effective teacher.
The subject comprises the following broad topics: Foundations of Education,
Curriculum Development, Educational Psychology, Research Methods in
Education, Educational Communication and Technology, Educational
Administration and Financial Management, Educational Measurement and
Evaluation, General Teaching Methods and Micro-teaching. This will be covered
in a period of 3 years, divided into 1st, 2nd and 3rd year work. Although these
topics are distinct in nature, the learner should be made to appreciate their interrelatedness and complimentary role. The aspect of learners with special needs
has been incorporated in view of enhancing the current trend of inclusive
education.
Contemporary and emerging issues such as HIV and AIDS, e-learning, drug and
substance abuse, child's rights, integrity and others have been infused and
integrated in relevant topics. This will enable the learner to be responsive to
critical issues affecting the society. Time has been allocated to each topic. The
suggested teaching and learning experiences, resources and assessment
methods have been included as appendices.
GENERAL OBJECTIVES
By the end of the course the learner should be able to:
1) Demonstrate knowledge, skills and positive attitudes in the nature and practice
of the teaching profession
2) Communicate effectively and uphold professionalism and commitment to
teaching duties
3) Demonstrate innovation in the field of Education and Provide . opportunities
fbr children with special and diverse learning needs
4) Employ a rational approach to problem solving through inquiry and research
5) Guide the learner to develop spiritually morally, emotionally, mentally, socially
and physically
6) Help the learner develop a positive attitude to citizenship, patriotism and
nationalism
7) Demonstrate appreciation of and promote environmental care and good health
8) Identify and provide support for children with psycho-social difficulties
9) Apply basic principles of Administration and Management in Education
10) Demonstrate an awareness and appreciation of trends and factors thai have
influenced education in Kenya
11) Demonstrate theoretical and practical knowledge about sociological issues
that affect education
12) Conduct educational assessment and evaluation effectively and handle
different learning situations within and outside the classroom.
