Catalogue Description: Course is designed to examine how social forces affect human
behavior. Students classify, discuss and analyze major social forces such as socialization,
culture, class inequality and differences, ethnic and racial relations, economic and
political institutions, education, family, religion and social change(UC,CSU,CAN, Soc 2)
Required text: Society Myths and Realities-Introduction to Sociology Thio, Alex 2007
Purpose and Goals of the Course: Student should understand contemporary American
social issues while learning to apply the major sociological perspectives used to conduct
research and explain social behavior. Course examines theories and concepts of
sociology, social structures, and institutions including education, political structures,
organizations, economy, family, religion and groups, as well as the society through which
humans interact and establish relationships.
The major sociological perspectives will be applied with focus on social structures &
socialization, family, gender, education, crime and deviance, & modern cultural
directions. Demographics, collective behavior, race/ethnic inequalities, religion and the
distribution of power in society will also be examined
Written exercises are assigned to help students master concepts and develop analytic
skills related to sociological inquiry and to think with sociological imagination.
Social Science Division/Classroom Expectations. Students shall be:
-attentive to & participate in all instructional activities
-courteous to people with different views & values & be respectful of all persons
Students shall not:-leave class early without prior permission from instructor
-disrupt class sessions by inappropriate behavior
-cheat on assignments or examinations
-eat, drink or smoke, or use cell phone in classrooms

Exam Requirements
Three (3) mid-term (unit) exams are scheduled with top two scores counting toward
grade. Students are encouraged to take optional 3d exam optional for makeup or to
improve grade.
All 3 Mid-Term Exams consist of Take Home Written Essay and in-class multiple-choice
test on scheduled date. Essay is part of the exam. Turn in on or before multiple-choice
portion. No late essays accepted. No essay=0. No exceptions.
Exams cover text, lectures, outside or in-class reading assignments. Students are
responsible for all material. Emphasis will be on class lecture material for which study
guides are provided
No make up exams except by college policy. Exams may be taken early with prior
permission of instructor. Final is exam mandatory. No make-up
Scheduled exam dates may be changed to meet course objectives. Be on time for exam!
Attendance/Class participation
Since important material not found in text is covered Students are expected to:
-attend class regularly.
-read assignments before class & come prepared to discuss all topics.
-arrive promptly so as not to disturb others & remain until class dismissed
-advise instructor if it is necessary to leave early
Quizzes may be required or additional homework assigned if necessary to meet
objectives of course. These cannot be made up
Student participation is 20% of course grade. Extra credit awarded for perfect attendance

Minimum length 1-typed full page of text double-spaced for each 10-points assignment is
worth. Write as much as you want

Due dates & instructions are found on Class Information Sheet
Exam Essays are pre-assigned to allow student time to think, plan & organize. Essays are
due on or before beginning of exam in class
No essays will be accepted after in-class exam has concluded.
No homework papers will be accepted after class on due date. NO EXCEPTIONS!

Read & answer question and follow instructions.
Be thorough, focused & comprehensive! Organize your material & present your content
logically & persuasively. Outline your ideas 1st before writing your paper
Demonstrate knowledge of relevant sociological concepts & back up your assertions with
examples & illustrations
Organize, edit and use clear sentence construction to avoid reduction in score
Include name-course-time meets & staple before submission. Seek permissionfrom
instructor if you will not be submitting typewritten papers
Include all relevant information from text , class lectures, or author’s source material
first. Information from other relevant books, articles or Internet
may supplement but not supplant primary material
All sources including class lecture & textbook must be cited(source authority
documented for attribution) You may use any acceptable format
Information in papers shall be properly documented e.g. book or article title & author
“May I use internet sources in my paper?”
Yes so long as content is summarized in student’s own words and cited by link (web site)
Downloading or copying link content directly onto essay or homework paper will be
considered plagiarism. Student may be referred to vice president of student affairs for
discipline as provided by Administrative Procedure 5000A-Academic Dishonesty
-include your name-assignment-course & date on each page submitted to ensure proper
credit. Staple before submission.
