Paolo MARESCA ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR OF COMPUTER ENGINEERING DET 2007 PROGRAM CHAIR 2007 International Workshop on Distance Education Technologies (DET 2007) San Francisco, CA, USA September 6 – September 8, 2007 Organized by Knowledge Systems Institute, U.S.A. THEME Bridging the gap between communication and intelligence in elearning systems http://www.dis.unina.it/congress Call for papers Theme DET 2007 focuses on creative solutions on distance education. It combines several advanced topics on design, implementation, and applications of E-learning systems. Submissions may cover novel approaches on communication mechanisms, intelligent methods, new educational technologies, and so on. Our special attention will be devoted to intelligent tools in various distance education systems. This workshop is being held in conjunction with 13th International Conference on Distributed Multimedia Systems (DMS'2007) http://www.ksi.edu/seke/dms07.html. You can also reach the website of DET'07 conference at http://www.dis.unina.it/congress Scope Distance education technologies cover important aspects of Communication Technologies, Intelligent Technologies and Educational Technologies. The technical issues to be addressed include, but are not limited to: E-learning based on mobile device new network infrastructures, real-time protocols, broadband and wireless communication tools, open source tools Quality-of-Services issues, Via Claudio 21, 80125 Napoli paolo.maresca@unina.it http://cds.unina.it/paolo.maresca Fax +39 081 7683816 Tel +39 081 7683168 Mob +39 335 8454124 UNIVERSITÀ DEGLI STUDI DI NAPOLI FEDERICO II POLO DELLE SCIENZE E DELLE TECNOLOGIE Dipartimento di Informatica e Sistemistica DR. Invited Session Session 1 Eclipse as intelligent tool for communication The ECLIPSE community is made up of developers, and all of them contribute to the improvement of the platform, from all points of view. ECLIPSE is used in schools, universities and for long-life learning, and there are several reasons why it was chosen: it is open source, has many plug-ins, allows collaborations and is free. For these motives contributions and experiences should focus on a) Eclipse & Teaching - Eclipse in Teaching (example: Eclipse as an IDE to teach a computer language or ECLIPSE as IDE to manage the process of formation of the students (examinations, homeworks, virtual classroom, self assessment etc) - Teaching with Eclipse (example: extend Eclipse or develop an RCP application as part of a teaching stream) ca - ECLIPSE & Teaching case studies and best practice b) Eclipse as a Platform Contributions should highlight the platform capabilities of Eclipse, for example the language IDE platform, the RCP platform and its components, the embedded device development platform, Eclipse as a server-side application platform in order to build and share virtual laboratories and resources for students and learning c) Eclipse as a governance and collaboration environment for people experiences and tools for cooperate and collaborate project management and project sharing applications community for e-learning Session 2 Collaboration in E-Learning E-learning brings a vast amount of information available for learners but also makes them isolated with each other. One of the biggest challenges for modern E-learning systems is to provide effective tools that can facilitate instructors and learners to work together. In this session, we will discuss many interesting topics: Time/Knowledge Exchange Collaborative Learning over the Internet Multi-Relational Data Mining in E-learning System Special Issue Papers focusing on pivotal transformational issues will be recommended to the International Journal of Distance Education Technologies (http://www.mine.tku.edu.tw/JDET/ ) (JDET, EI: COMPENDEX beginning in 2007)¨. This journal publishes original research articles about distance education in four issues per year. JDET is the primary forum for researchers and practitioners to disseminate practical solutions to the automation of open and distance learning. The journal is for academic researchers and engineers who work on distance learning programs and software systems, as well as educators and general participants of distance education.
