MONTANA 1948 PLOT OUTLINE AND CHARACTER SKETCH EPILOGUE & BOOK 1 BOOK 2 BOOK 3 & PROLOGUE YOUR GROUP WILL BE ASSIGNED ONE PART OF THE BOOK TO PRESENT TO THE CLASS. YOU PLOT OUTLINE MUST CONTAIN THE FOLLOWING. THIS ASSIGNMENT IS WORTH 50 POINTS. THIS WILL PREPARE YOU FOR OTHER FINAL ASSIGNMENTS ON THIS NOVEL. PLOT ASSIGNMENT: 1. Prepare an illustrated time/plot outline of your chapters, including: a. A self-created title for the chapters your group is covering that describes the section of the novel. You must be able to explain the reason for your title choice. b. All relevant events listed with at appropriate illustrations/”art” for at least 6 of the events. c. Six quotations (written out and cited by page number) that represent important ideas of your chapters. 2. Prepare a presentation for the class on your chapters incorporating an explanation of both the story events. Your presentation should not be a summary of the events of chapters’ events. It should be an explanation of why your group made these selections and how they tie into the rest of the novel. Your presentation should answer WHY these events are important and what message is the author trying to give us, the reader. Consider the following: How do these events help us understand the big picture, the message, the theme of the novel? Make sure everyone in your group has an equal part in the presentation. 3. Your group must email or share with me on Google Docs your typed notes for your part of the book. I will post these on my wiki for use by your classmates. CHARACTER SKETCH: Your group will be assigned ONE character to present. The page numbers given are only a few to start with. The following questions are to help you with the requirements of the character sketch. These do not have to be answered, but if you do a good job on your character sketch, anyone looking at it will be able to answer these. 1. Wesley Hayden (16, 17, 20, 34, 61) How did he get his job? How did he do his job? What other profession was he trained in? How is the word “prosaic” (36) used to compare him to his brother, Frank? 2. Frank Hayden (36, 43-44) How did his war experience differ from his brother’s How does this experience contribute to his treatment of Native American women? How do David’s parents feel about Uncle Frank? 3. Marie Little Soldier (24-25) How do the three members of the narrator’s family feel about her? 4. Gail Hayden (19, 24, 27, 43-44) What words describe her personality? How does she interact with David? With her husband? With Frank? 5. Julian Hayden (69, 37, 20) What kind of father is he. How does he feel about Frank’s behavior with Native American women? Describe his relationship with each son. 6. David Hayden (he’s the narrator) What does he like to do? How does he feel about his father? His mother? The housekeeper? Requirements for each Character Sketch: Make sure to answer all PARTS of the description. You must give textual support for each of the FOUR areas above. Without it, you CANNOT receive full credit. 1. Physical Description What does he/she look like? Be as specific as possible. What can you tell about the person based on his/her appearance? Use quotes from the book or text. Use MLA documentation. Example: “his right leg V-ed in” (16). 2. Personality Traits or Personal Qualities List three. Example: Honest, charming, witty, hard working, sense of humor, trustworthy, deceitful, curious, loner, etc. Give an example of quote from the novel illustrating the trait or quality. Do this for each. Explain how the trait or quality is shown. Do this for each. 3. Values or Beliefs: What can you tell based on what the person says or does or what others say about the person regarding his/her morals? Give evidence from the text 4. Others What else do you know about this character? Personal history (birth, occupation, hobbies, past experiences) Give evidence from the text. 5.
