Sample Expectations
These sample expectations are geared toward an AFYA, but could be used for working
with a GAA if slightly adjusted.

department e-mails and request apply to you, ask!
Let me know if you are stressed out or have too much work to do. Remember, you are a
student first!
Please also let me know if you don’t have enough work to do and don’t feel challenged
enough.
Please share your academic commitments with me and inform me about times that may
be more hectic for you.
Be a positive role model for staff, students, and co-workers. It is vital that you
understand that role modeling is a key aspect of your job and there are high
expectations placed upon you.
If you are planning on going away for the weekend, let me know as soon as possible. I
will do the same.
Administrative
 Check your e-mail, voicemail and mailbox (in Warfield and in the RA Closet) every day.


Respond to any communication in a timely manner.
If I set a deadline for you, please be sure to turn items in on time. If you are unable to
meet a deadline, please discuss the situation with me in advance.
Be on time. If you are running late, call me and let me know. I will do the same thing.
Crisis Response
 The best way to get in touch with me is my cell phone (especially at night). If I don’t

answer, please leave a message and I will get back to you as soon as possible. If you need
assistance and I’m unavailable, please call the AOD…if you’re unable to reach the AOD,
call a coordinator.
If you deal with a crisis or emergency during the day and I’m in the building, please
inform me immediately. If I’m not in the building at the time, please inform me before
the end of that workday (via personal conversation, e-mail or voicemail).
If you deal with a crisis or emergency at night and need assistance, please call my cell. If
you can handle the situation on your own but it is a serious situation that may require
immediate follow-up in the morning, please send me an e-mail or leave me a voicemail
that night. Use your own judgment regarding what is a serious situation. Any time you
had to contact someone else such as MUPD, a coordinator, a crisis counselor, the AOD,
etc., please inform me that night.
Please inform me of any other situations on the next workday (via personal conversation,
e-mail or voicemail).
Communication with FYA
 To ensure consistency, discuss any “exceptions” or “special request” for staff or students
with me prior to making a decision. I will inform you if I make any decisions regarding
such matters.


Inform me of any performance concerns of an RA. I will do the same. We will decide
together what actions to take and who should hold a meeting regarding minor
performance concerns. If we need to address any serious performance concerns, we will
hold those meetings together.
If an RA informs you about any concerns, please inform me in a timely manner (24-48
hours).
If you become aware of any concerns regarding residents (roommate conflicts and other
common issues), please inform me in a timely manner (24-48 hours).
If you have a conversation with a parent, staff member or faculty member, please inform
me in a timely manner (24-48 hours).
If you develop new procedures or alter existing procedures regarding any of your areas of
responsibility, please let me know. I will do the same.
What you can expect from your FYA
First and foremost, I will hold myself to the same expectations I have asked of you.
In addition, here are some other things I will strive to do:
 I will let you know when I’m gone for the evening or weekend. If you are planning on

leaving for a weekend, please inform me as soon as you are aware of that commitment. If
there is a conflict in regards to both of us wanting to go out of town on the same
weekend, we will discuss the situation and try to find a compromise.
I maintain an Open Door policy. I will attempt to leave it open when I am in the office as
much as possible and you are welcome to stop in when I am not in a meeting.
I will do my best to keep you informed on all hall matters.
Balance is important to me. I will strive to help you find appropriate balance between
classes, personal life, and job-related responsibilities. I will do my best to respect your
boundaries and ask the same of you.
I will be open and honest about your job performance.
I will support your decisions as long as you are abiding by policies and procedures.
I welcome and expect feedback from you regarding your performance as well as my own.
I will let you know about deadlines in a timely manner and will meet deadlines as
necessary, expecting the same from you.
My paperwork, like yours, will be timely and professional.
I believe individuals thrive when their experiences are hands-on and learning-centered; I
hope through our conversations to facilitate this for you throughout the year.
I will challenge you.
I will be there to support you.
Like I ask of you, I will ask for help when necessary.
I will be honest and open with you.
I believe we are a team and will constantly bear this in mind.
I will strive to never refer to our building as “mine,” but “ours.”
I strive to be a positive role-model, both personally and professionally.
I will do my best to provide you with resources that will benefit you personally,
professionally, and academically.
I will remember you are a student first.
I will work on my goals throughout the year and dedicate my life to never-ending,
constant, (intentional) improvement—personally and professionally.


I will remember that we both want to have FUN in our roles! I will develop opportunities
for you and I to bond as a staff team.
You can call or e-mail me at all hour of the day/night! I may not hear the phone at 3 am,
but if I do, and you need me, I will answer! 
