ANM/MPHW TRAINING SCHOOL
Introduction
Training of Auxiliary Nurse- Midwife started in A & N Islands in the year
1963 December as ANM Training Centre in G.B.Pant Hospital Complex with the
intake capacity of 8 -10 students per year. Staffed by only one Sister Tutor till
1979. The duration of Training course was 2 years. Educational qualification is 8
Std. pass. During the period of 1979-82 the course was suspended for want of
implementation Multipurpose Health Worker Scheme and to bring into force the
revised ANM syllabus 1977 by INC. Meanwhile preparation for establishment of a
full fledged ANM training school was under way. Finally the School was
reopened on 7th February 1983.
Philosophy: Health is a fundamental human right. It is the responsibility of
individual and society to maintain optimum health. Community
participation is mandatory to protect the health of all individuals.
The institution believes that the Auxiliary Nurse-Midwives/Multipurpose Health Workers Female are pillars and backbone of the health
services. She should be sensitive and accountable to meet the health
needs of the community. She should be able to provide accessible,
equitable, affordable and quality health care. She is a catalyst between
the community and the health service department.
PurposeI.
To train Health Worker (Female) in order to provide comprehensive
health services including Family Welfare to the Rural areas through a
net work of Sub-Centres, PHCs and CHCs and to meet the shortage of
Health Worker (Female) in these Islands especially in tribal areas.
II.
At the end of the Training programme the students of the Health
Worker should demonstrate ability to plan and carry out job
responsibilities assign to her under the multipurpose workers scheme.
Objectives: The students Health Worker should demonstrate ability to:
1.
Explain the principles of healthful living related to all age groups in the
community.
2.
Perform basic health care activities in community and institutional
settings.
3.
Plan and carry out nutrition and health education activities in the home,
clinic and community.
4.
Provide basic maternal and child health care including immunization
services, family health care and family planning services.
5. (i) Perform basic Midwifery procedures and basic Nursing techniques with
special emphasis on domiciliary and home nursing procedures (Health
Worker, Female).
6.
Provide First Aid and emergency Nursing care, elementary medical
care including treatment of minor ailments.
7.
Participate as a responsible member of the health team.
8.
Identify community resources which could be utilized for health
promotion, health maintenance and prevention of diseases.
9.
Assist in the Training of community/village level health workers.
10.
Promote community development activities.

Physical facilities:- The school is situated at Atlanta Point near Andaman and
Nicobar Institute of Medical Sciences having 2 class rooms, 1 demonstration
laboratory, 1 Nutrition laboratory,1 Community health ;laboratory, 1 library, 1
room for principal, 1 Staff room, 1 Office room and separate washroom for
students and staff.
Teaching aids:- It has LCD projector, portable OHPs, models, charts, skeleton,
mannequins/simulators, home visiting bags, delivery kits,
slides etc.
Transport:- 1 mini bus is provided by the Directorate of health services.
Communication:- one independent telephone is provided.
Annual Admission:- 25 students.
Duration of the Course:
02 years (18 months + 06 months internship)
Recognition and Affiliation:- The School has been granted recognition by the
Indian Nursing Council, New Delhi and State Nursing Council i.e; Tamil Nadu
Nurse’s and Midwives Council Chennai in April 1994. It is inspected by the State
Nursing Council every two years.
Examination Board: :The annual examination is conducted by the board of
examination for Auxiliary Nurse-Midwives, Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
Principal Secretary (Health) and Director of Health Services being Chairman and
Vice Chairman of the Board respectively. The Principal Nursing Officer is the
Member Secretary and Convener of the examination Board.
Administration of the School:
1. The Director of Health Services, Andaman and Nicobar Administration is the
overall Administrative head.
2. The Principal Nursing Officer is the Administrative head of the School.
Teaching Facilities:
1. Adequate class rooms, demonstration rooms, Models, Audio visual aids, Library,
Books and Journals are available.

Clinical:
The G.B. Pant Hospital, Port Blair is the clinical teaching area for the students.
Field/Community Health Nursing:
The Primary Health Centre at Garacharama and Sub-Centre at Prothrapur are the
Field Training Centre for trainees.
Admission Requirement:
The candidates are required to apply for the course in the prescribed proforma or online.
The candidates should belong to the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
The criteria for selection of candidates are –
1. Selection of candidates for MPHW (F)/ANM done on the basis of the “Area wise
merit” of class XII pass marks. “Area” wise includes Rural as well as Urban areas.
AS such there is no separate seats reserved for candidates living below poverty
line.
2. All other criteria laid down in the prescribed syllabus and regulations for ANM by
the Indian Nursing Council, New Delhi.
3. Candidates possessing higher qualification do not get any extra weightage for
determining the status of merit for selection in the MPHW (F)/ANM course.
Eligibility: 1. Female candidates only.
2. The minimum age for admission shall be 17 years on 31st Dec. of the year in which
admission shall be sought.
3. The maximum age shall be 30 years.
Educational Qualification
1. The minimum qualification requirements shall be the passing of 12 years of
schooling (10+2 year course) recognized by CBSE/ICSE/SSSCE/HSCE or a
recognized equivalent examination.

Certificate will be issued on successful completion of Training requirement. The
Principal of the ANM School should certify for each student that she has under gone
successfully the internship program, 100% clinical requirements and acquired the
requisite competencies as listed in the syllabus before the award of the
certificate/diploma by the state Nursing Councils/examination boards. Qualified ANMs
have to be registered by the State Nursing Councils under the provision of the State
Nursing Councils and Indian Nursing Council Act as ANMs, before joining services as a
qualified Female Health worker and to practice as ANM.
Working Hours:
8.30 am to 4.30 PM with 1 hour lunch break.
Holidays:
Students are entitled for 3 national holidays, all gazetted holidays, 30
days of vacation and 10 days sick leave on medical certificate per year. These
30 days vacation is given in two spell of 15 days during October and December
every year.
Attendance: 100% attendance is desirable. A candidate must have minimum of 80%
attendance in theory and practical in each subject to be able to appear in the
final examination. Absence from classes and clinical and field will disqualify the
trainee for appearing the examination. However such absence with justify
reason will be considered provided the candidate makes up the same after
completion of the course.
School Discipline: The trainees should maintain discipline/conduct within and outside
the premises of the institute. They should also abide by the disciplinary rules of
the institution laid down from time to time. The institute reserve the rights to
take disciplinary action against the trainees for its violation.

The institute expects a high degree of discipline and decorum from their Trainees. The
trainees admitted in the institute have to abide by the rules and regulations strictly. The
institute reserves the right to take disciplinary action against a trainees if found indulged in
any acts of indiscipline.
A student of the school shall attempt to the best ability to prove herself worthy of the
status in word thought& deed.
She shall always endeavor to be punctual and regular in attending to her lectures and any
work assigned to her.
She/ he shall observe the rules of country and civil behavior in her relationship with her
teachers, officers, fellow students, and others including class IV employees.
She shall handle all school properties with care and do every thing in her power to
preserve her own personal cleanliness and that of her surroundings and also shall see to
it that no damage is done to the building, furniture’s, and other properties of the school.
No student is allowed to take part in any activity that is considered undesirable or
subversive of orderly academic life.
Students in the school are not granted leave for social events in the family or remain in
the home to nurse sick relatives. Any leave other than vacation or holidays is counted as
absent with permission.
One day absent will be counted as Two days lost and will have to be made up at the end
of the course.
No student will be allowed to leave clinical area or school premises in between without
permission from concerned authorities.
Rules of library should be followed.
In case if availing leave due to sickness the Principal should be intimated on the same
day.
Ragging is prohibited. Disciplinary action will be taken against those indulging in such
practices.
When in uniform students are not permitted to wear any form of jewellery (except small
ear rings for girls). Hair must be tidy and put up.
While in classroom & Field Training students should wear Blue Saree and White Blouse
with black shoes and during Hospital experience students should wear white Saree, white
blouse and white shoes.
Students must enthusiastically participate in all activities of the school and extend their cooperation.
Students should be punctual in attending classes/Clinical/Field etc.
Use of Mobile phone is totally banned during working hours in the campus, any trainee
found using mobile phones, strict disciplinary action will be initiated and the mobile phone
will be seized immediately.
Stipend:
Stipend is paid @ Rs. 1000/- per month per trainee with respect to attendance.
Uniform: Students are required to wear proper uniform as prescribe:
i). In Clinical/Hospital

White Saree & White Blouse, white belt with
white Pam Shoes.
ii). In Community Health and

Sky Blue Saree and White Blouse with
Black Pam Shoes.
Hostel :- There is a double storied 25 bedded hostel attached to the School near the
Directorate of Health Services. There is a mess facility. The students are provided tea,
break fast, Lunch, evening tea and Dinner. Mess is being managed by students
themselves, which is part of curriculum in dietary planning, under the supervision of
Warden and the Principal. There are certain rules of the hostel which is to be followed by
all inmates. These rules are given to them at the time of admission. Reverse osmosis
plant has been installed in hostel as well as school to provide safe drinking water.

Guidelines for internship:
a.
The ANM students (in a group of 4-5) should be posted in the Sub-Centre/Primary
Health Centre with a regular ANM for one month/4 weeks for supervised
independent practice in the community which should be residential..
b.
The students should participate in all National Health and Family Welfare programs
during their clinical experience.
c.
At least 80% of all the clinical requirements should be completed before appearing
for the final (second year) examination.
d.
The Principal of the ANM School should certify for each student that she has
undergone successfully the internship program, completed 100% of the clinical
requirements and acquired the requisite competencies as listed in the syllabus
before the award of the certificate/diploma by the state Nursing
council/examination board.
e.
The casebook and competency record book should be completed and signed by
the competent authority of the school before appearing for the second year
practical examination.
