LES DEVOIRS – HOMEWORK/INDEPENDENT STUDY INSTRUCTIONS Due every class (with a few exceptions). Homework may be completed in my room before the next class during lunch or after school. 1. Every class you will choose one category on the LOTO board. Choose ONE option from this category on the e-board. Some options COUNT AS 2 OR 3 HOMEWORKS. The assignments are designed to help you practice the French language as well as learn about Francophone (French-speaking) cultures. 2. Each assignment (1 part for options that count as 2 or 3) will be due at the BEGINNING OF THE NEXT CLASS. The homework checker will stamp the completed category on the Loto board. If you complete 5 categories in a row, you will have “Loto” and will receive 10 bonus euros. When you complete the whole Loto board, you will receive a homework pass. 3. Comprehensible Input (Reading & listening) is very important for acquiring a language, so you may choose to do one of these options as an assignment every class. You may do any other assignment ONCE per Marking Period. There are many assignments to choose from (see the e-board for details). 4. Late homework will receive a 5 euros fine per class. If you will not be at school on a due date, turn in the assignment early. If you are ill on a due date, the homework is due the NEXT CLASS PERIOD. You may receive a study skills session for missing work. 5. Each assignment will receive a rating of 5 – 10. These rates are listed on the rubric and are up to 100 points, depending on the quality of the work. Amazing assignments will receive up to 20 bonus euros. Homework is a part of Practice assignments which are 25% of your overall grade. 6. Label each assignment as follows or use the assignment paper below. Option # 2: Read a class story 1 Read a recent class story or a student’s timed writing story (ask your French teacher to borrow a blue book) to a parent or the French teacher. 2 In English explain what is happening in the story to the parent/French teacher. 3 On a piece of paper, write down the title of the story you read and a sentence in English explaining the story. 4 After you have finished, have the parent/teacher sign your sheet of paper. Positive comments are welcome. 5 Return a borrowed blue book to the teacher. Option # 3: Read a song/poem 1 Read (or sing) a recent class song/poem to a parent or the French teacher. 2 In English explain what is happening in the song/poem to the parent/French teacher. 3 On a piece of paper, write down the title and author of the song/poem you read (sang). 4 After you have finished, have the parent/teacher sign your sheet of paper. Positive comments are welcome. Option # 4: French language Podcast COUNTS AS 2 HOMEWORKS (this can also count as a Tech Option) – 1 Listen to a free French language podcast. Check out this list of French podcasts www.fluentu.com/french/blog/french-podcasts/ Some of my favorites include: CoffeeBreak French (look for free lessons), One Thing in a French Day, Learn French by Podcast, JeFrench.com (really simple dialogues), NewsinSlowFrench.com. There is also a fluentu ipad app. 2 Listen for a minimum of 10 minutes (you may listen to the same podcast several times or several podcasts) and write a summary in your own words in English what you learned. 3 In the summary, write the program and title of what you heard. 4 Provide as much detail as possible of what you heard. Option # 5: French language internet site (can also count as a Tech Option) COUNTS AS 2 HOMEWORKS 1 Look for a site on the internet in French that is interesting to you. google.fr (google search engine in French) is a good place to start. On the site lepointdufle.net you will find all kinds of reading and listening sites for French language learners. Allocine.fr has movie reviews and clips. 2 You can find a site about a musician, athlete, sports team/event, news, country, cultural event, animal, etc. On google.fr type in the name of the musician, athlete or event. You may also choose to type a topic that interests you in French, for ex. le basket-ball en France, la cuisine française, le cheerleading en France, etc. 3 Spend at least 10 minutes reading as much as you can on the site and going to the different links. 4 Print out the home page of the site, then write an explanation in English telling why you picked this site, what you learned on the site and what you found interesting about the site. 5 The site must be more than 90% French and must be about something specific. Option # 6: French YouTube video (can also count as a Tech Option) - COUNTS AS 2 HOMEWORKS 1 Look for a YouTube video in French that is interesting to you and is appropriate for school. 2 You can look for a French video tutorial (le tutoriel) on topics such as les crêpes, le football, le skate, le maquillage (make up), etc. If it is an American game that interests you such as Minecraft write “en français” in your search. You may also look for a French commercial (search la publicité française) or music video with French and English lyrics. 3 Spend at least 10 minutes listening to the video. If the video is short, replay it. If you do not understand the video at all, move on to a different one. 4 Print out or write the link to the video or print a screenshot, then write an explanation in English telling why you picked this video, 2-3 new French words you learned and what you found interesting about the video. You may also write about any difficulty you had finding the video. 5 The video must be more than 90% French and must be about something specific. Option # 7: Parlez avec le professeur (MUST MAKE AN APPOINTMENT) 1 During lunch or right after school, come into class and talk to the French teacher for at least 5 minutes in French. 2 Have a sheet of paper prepared ahead of time with what you are going to talk about written on it in French. 3 After you have talked about the things on your list, write a short summary in English on the same paper of what was said and have the teacher sign your paper. Option # 8: Parlez avec un(e) autre élève 1 Set up a time to visit with a friend in French. 2 Make sure there is an adult available to monitor you talking. 3 Write out a list of topics you want to discuss. 4 Look up in your vocabulary section any items you might need in your discussion and write them down. 5 Talk with your friend for at least 5 minutes in French - Check off the items you wrote down as you talk. 6 Have the adult sign that you talked for the 5 minutes. VOCABULARY OPTIONS Option # 9: Illustrated vocabulary (also counts for Artistic Option) 1 On a separate paper draw 5 fancy pictures with the newest words in our vocabulary list, you may not use the same words more than one time. 2 Draw a gorgeous picture illustrating each word and underneath the picture write the word in French spelled correctly. 3 Don’t forget to write your name, class period, date, and Option #___ & Option name. Option # 10: Original sentences – NO TRANSLATOR Write 5 original, non-repetitive, creative sentences in French using the vocabulary we are presently working on. Underline or circle the vocabulary word in each sentence. You are not to use any on-line translator. Option # 11: Sentences – Using any perspective EXCEPT S/HE form 1 Select the 5 most difficult words for YOU from the latest vocabulary (see quizlet or notebook). 2 Write a sentence in French for each word. 3 Write the sentences in any form EXCEPT S/HE form (ex. I, you, they). 4 Circle the vocabulary word. 5 Make sure your sentences are interesting and non-repetitive. Option # 12: Puzzle - May be Crossword puzzle or word search puzzle 1 Make a crossword or word search puzzle – Use a puzzle maker online or LARGE size graph paper. 2 Use at least 5 words from the most recent vocabulary. 3 Write the CLUES: You may only use English or illustrations for the clues. 4 If your clues are on another sheet of paper, cut them out and glue or tape them neatly on with the puzzle. 5 Make a KEY of the puzzle & hand it in with the puzzle. Option # 13: Fan fold vocabulary review (there will be 4 parts to this one) time – COUNTS AS 2 HOMEWORKS any 1 Take a piece of binder paper and fold it into 3 columns. 2 Decorate the front of the fan fold with special decorations. 3. On the back write: Watched me study _________________ & Watched me take test ______________ 3 Label the 1st column “Français” and the 2nd column “Anglais” & the 3rd column “Quiz” 4 In the first column, write in the French column the newest vocabulary words that you need to study (minimum 5 words). 5 In column 2, next to each word in column 1, write the meaning in English of the word in column 2 6 Have an adult available to see you do the next 2 steps. 7 Study the words in column 1 for 10 minutes per night (you may lift up column 3 to refer to column 2 when necessary). 8 On the third night, quiz yourself by folding column 3 to cover column 2, then writing the meaning of each word on column 3 without peeking. 9 Check and correct your answers in front of the adult. 10 On the lines on the back, have the adult who watched you study and the adult who watched you take the test sign both lines. Option # 14: Chapter vocabulary Review – COUNTS AS 2 HOMEWORKS 1 Make a list of the 10 most difficult words from our vocabulary (refer to quizlet or notebook). 2 Under the list, describe an effective and original way to review the words. 3 Then review the words using the method you described. 4 You must turn in solid proof that you reviewed the words showing the method you used (i.e. written composition, graphics, & parent or teacher signature). 5 You may use a partner activity, if you get teacher permission ahead of time. Option # 15: Vocabulary quiz – COUNTS AS 2 HOMEWORKS 1 Print in ink on unlined paper or type a vocabulary quiz for the most recent vocabulary words. 2 Use the 5 most difficult words off the recent vocabulary. 3 Your quiz may be fill-in-the-blank, multiple choice, matching, illustration or any other creative format you can think of. (Your quiz may contain more than one format.) 4 Your quiz may be translation format (French to English, or English to French) 5 You MUST include at least 2 extra answers in the answer column to keep students from guessing. 6 Be sure to make a key for your quiz and turn it in, too. 7 They should be typed or printed in pen with places for answers to be written, so that they can be copied without any problem (NO LINED PAPER). A quality quiz may become a class quiz. WRITING BASED OPTIONS Option # 16: Write a mini-conte 1 Using the vocabulary we are currently practicing, write a mini-conte of your choosing. 2 You may write either a mini-conte we told in class, as it was told in class, including all the details, or use it as a basis to make up one of your own. 3 Make sure to use at least three words from the vocabulary list. Circle each word from the vocabulary list the first time you use it. (Hint: The words on the list are mostly in the order they occur in the story. However, you may change the order if necessary.) 4 Your composition must be minimum of 50 words long. Option # 17: Mini-conte EXCEPT THE S/HE FORM 1 Using recent vocabulary, write one of the mini-conte from class. 2 You may write any mini-conte. 3 Write the story you choose as it was told in class, including all the details, but with one difference: A. Write the story in any perspective EXCEPT THE S/HE FORM. (I, you, we, or they) B. Make sure to use at least three words on the word list. Watch your verb endings. Check your verbs. C. Circle each word from the word list the first time you use it. (Hint: The words on the list are mostly in the order they occur in the story. However, you may change the order if necessary.) 4.Your composition must be a minimum of 50 words long. Option # 18: Sequel to a story 1 Write a sequel to a story that we have done in class. 2 Tell what happens next. 3 You must write at least 30 original words in French. (Do not count any words you copy from a handout.) In the title, tell what story it is in English. Option # 19: Word list story 1 Take one of the word lists from any topic we are doing & write an original story using at least 3 of the words from the list. 2 Underline each word the first time you use it. 3 At the top of the page, tell which word list you used. 4 Your story must be a minimum of 50 words long. Option # 20: Writing--open topic 1 Using the recent vocabulary we have been studying, write a story in French using at least 3 of the words (ones that you need to study). 2 You may write a story about any topic you choose as long as you use the recent vocabulary. 3 Write entirely in French, and keep it class-appropriate. 4 Your composition must be a minimum of 50 words long. Option # 21: Practice Freewrite 1 Do a timed writing in French. 2 Write for 5 - 10 minutes without stopping to look up anything or ask for a word. If you don’t know a word, you can put it in English – only 2 in total in the freewrite - on any topic you’d like. 3 Make sure someone times you accurately (you need to ask a family member or teacher to time you) & have them sign the assignment. 4 Count up the number of French words you wrote and write the number at the top of the page. 5 Don’t count proper nouns or English. Option # 22: Story––Un conte de Noël or Un conte d’hiver DO NOT USE TRANSLATOR 1 Write a story in French about Christmas or winter. 2 Your story should be at least 50 words long. 3 Ask the teacher for any specialized vocabulary you need. 4 You may also look through the vocabulary lists that you have been given to help you with that vocabulary. Option # 23: Story about a trip NO ON-LINE TRANSLATORS 1 Write a story about something that happened to you while driving/riding in a car, walking, riding a horse, or bike, etc.. 2 You will write the story in the “je” and/or “nous” forms, with a minimum 50 words in French. 3 Make sure to use the correct verb endings for “je” and “nous”. Option # 24: Story about a big mess/ big adventure / a big school function NO TRANSLATORS 1Write a story about a time you made or came in contact with a mess/ had a big adventure/ went to a school function. 2 Describe the mess/ the adventure/ school function, how exactly it happened and how it got cleaned up/ ended. 3 Use the “je” form as necessary. 4 Write a minimum of 50 words in French. Option # 25: Story about baby you NO ON-LINE TRANSLATORS 1 Write a true story about an important, interesting or amusing event that happened to you when you were a baby. 2 Describe the event in as much detail as possible. 3 Use the “je” form as necessary. 4 Write a minimum of 50 words in French. Option # 26: Story about an animal and you (NOTE: THIS MAY BE “WE” FORM ) 1Write a true story about a time when you encountered a scary animal/lost animal/found an animal. 2 Describe the event in as much detail as possible. 3 Use the “je” form as necessary. 4 Write a minimum of 50 words in French. DO NOT USE TRANSLATORS Option # 27: Un voyage memorable DO NOT USE TRANSLATORS 1 Describe a memorable trip you’ve taken. 2 Write at least 50 words in French. 3 Use “je,” “nous,” etc. as necessary, making sure to use the correct endings on verbs. Option # 28: Mon été NOTE: YOU WILL USE THE NEAR FUTUR FORMS OF THE VERBS HERE) 1 In French, tell what your plans are for the summer. 2 Use “je vais ____r”/“nous allons____r”/etc. to talk about the future. EX. Je vais nager tout le temps en été. Mes copains et moi, nous allons aller à la plage de New Jersey. 3 Write a minimum of 50 words in French. NO TRANSLATORS Option # 29: A fairy tale NO TRANSLATORS 1 In French write a fairy tale you used to hear or read when you were little or make up a fairy tale in French. 2 Write min. of 50 words in French. Option # 30: Poem NO TRANSLATORS 1 Write a poem in French. 2 It should have at least 10 words in it. 3 Make sure to use one of the poem types – the same as in English, only written in French, for example 4 sets of 2 lines with each set of 2 lines rhyming at the end. You may also choose to write an acrostic poem using your name. 4 Make use of good imagery. Option # 31: Mad lib NO TRANSLATORS 1 Write a story in French that’s at least 50 words long. 2 Leave at least 5 blanks in the story. 3 Under each blank, indicate what kind of word should go in the blank (place name, person’s name, profession, action verb, adjective, etc.). 4 Your story must be G-rated to receive credit. Option # 32: News report NO TRANSLATORS 1 Make a list of at least 5 words or phrases you need to review most. 2 Write a report of a fictitious news event using the words you selected. 3 Circle each word the first time you use it. 4 The news report must be at least 50 words long in French. 5 As with all good reporting, the story must contain the who, what, where, when, why, how, etc. of the event. Option # 33: Class Novels––Chapter ? (AFTER READING FROM A Novel) 1 Write a prediction for the book we read in class. 2 Your prediction must be in French and contain characters from the novel we read. 3 It may be as creative as you like. 4 It must be G-rated and at least 50 words long. Option # 34: Book review - NO TRANSLATORS 1 In French write a review (a book you are reading or that you’ve read). 2 Describe the book and give your opinion of it. 3 If the book is in English, write the review in French. 4 Be sure to include the title and author of the book. 5 Minimum 20 words. CULTURE BASED OPTIONS Option # 35: Taste Test 1 – COUNTS AS 2 HOMEWORKS 1 Purchase a French packaged food from a French specialty store, or a grocery store (Check cheeses, cookies or chocolate in stores such as Corrado’s in Wayne or Clifton, Fairway Market on Rt. 46 or the Affinage Cheese Shop in Fairfield). If you go to NYC, try the Marche du Sud store or Sahadi’s ). 2 Try the food (prepare it, if necessary) then on a piece of paper: •list any French words that you understand from the label •in English, tell where you purchased the product •in English, describe the food & in English, give your opinion of the food in at least 20 words •staple or tape the label/package or take & print a photo of the label/package/food Option # 36: Taste Test 2 – COUNTS AS 2 HOMEWORKS 1 Read and print a French recipe from a FRENCH website. To do this, use the French search engine google.fr, then type in a food in French and the word “recette” (meaning recipe) to search for a recipe. If you don’t know how to say the food in French, check on Google Translator or check with me. You may also go directly to a French recipe site. Excellent French recipe sites are allrecipes.fr, marmiton.org, and cuisineaz.com. Just choose a recipe from one of the categories. 2 Read the recipe in French, then • underline and list any French words that you understand in the recipe and write the meanings in English. 3 Prepare the recipe. At this point, you may use an online translator or dictionary to help you understand the directions. • In English, describe the food and directions & in English, and give your opinion of the recipe in at least 50 words. • Staple the recipe, French/English word list, and English paragraph together. ASK YOUR TEACHER IF YOU WANT TO BRING IN FOOD SAMPLES FOR “ÉTONNE MOI” EUROS. Option # 37: French language TV – COUNTS AS 2 HOMEWORKS 1Watch French language TV (TV5Monde, France 24, France 2, francetvpluzz – some of the programs are available online) for a minimum of 10 minutes. 2 Write a one page description in English of what you saw--including ads and station program information--and your opinion of it. 3 What does it have in common with English-language television, and how is it different? 4 Include the title of the program you watched, the channel it was on, and what day and time the program was on. Option # 38: French movie with English subtitles or American movie with French dubbing. COUNTS AS 2 HOMEWORKS 1Watch at least 20 minutes of a French language movie with English subtitles or watch an American film you have already seen dubbed in French. 2 Write the title of the movie and write a summary of the scene(s) in English. Include the characters in your summary and three new expressions that you learned in French. You may also choose to describe in French what is happening in the scene(s). 3. Have a parent or other adult verify that you have watched it in French by signing your paragraph when you are done. Option # 39: French language song – COUNTS AS 2 HOMEWORKS Listen to a song in French on CD , Spotify, YouTube, etc. Include a print out of the lyrics. (It must be a song we haven’t heard yet in class.) In your own words, describe in English what the song is about OR provide biographical information on the artist/band (50 words minimum). Option #40: French or French-speaking Holidays – COUNTS AS 2 HOMEWORKS 1 Make a poster in English that illustrates the similarities and differences between Holidays in France or any French-speaking country. 2 Make your poster on a piece of white paper (8.5”x11” or 9”x12”). 3 On the poster, describe in your own words the Holiday in the French-speaking country (min. 5 sentences) 4 Include a description of how the Holiday is celebrated in the U.S. min. 5 sentences. 5 Elsewhere on the poster, list 3 similarities between the two celebrations. 6 List 3 differences. 7 The 3 similarities and 3 differences should provide information not included in the descriptions. 8 Include graphics that illustrate each celebration. Option # 41: French culture poster – COUNTS AS 3 HOMEWORKS 1 Research an aspect of a French speaking culture that interests you. 2 You could research holiday traditions, dances, foods, schools, a town or beach, immigration, indigenous peoples/languages, historical events, etc. 3 Make a poster showing what you found out. 4 Your poster must be on colored paper (8.5x11” or 9x12”). 5 On the poster, include a title, illustrations or graphics depicting your topic and what you found out about the topic. 6 Write at least 50 words in English. 7 Do not copy from your sources; use your own words to share what you learned. Option # 42: French crafts – COUNTS AS 3 HOMEWORKS 1 Make an authentic French handicraft from a French website (look on the Internet). A good website is teteamodeler.com. 2 In English, write a 1/2 page telling about making the handicraft: a. what part was easy, hard, fun; b. would you recommend the project to others; c. what country the craft is from, etc. 3 Turn in both the handicraft and your description. 4 Print out a copy of the French craft description. 5 You will get your handicraft back after credit is recorded. Option # 43: Place names in French – May be done only 1 time a year 1 Make a list of places in the United States with French names. 2 The places may be states, cities, geographic features (mountains, rivers, islands, etc.), streets, buildings, and so on. 3 For each name, also tell where the place is found and what the name means in English. 4 Your list must have at least 10 places. Use a map for reference. COMMUNITY BUILDING OPTIONS Option # 44: Teach French 1 Teach a family member at least 3 French vocab words (using a method that includes your participation in the teaching of the words – such as TPR, flash cards, repetition and student participation, etc) You should teach them for at least 15 minutes. 2 On one piece of paper write down the method you used and the list of words you taught them. 3 Then make up a written quiz and have him/her take it. 4 Grade the quiz and have your “victim” sign the quiz also proving that they took the test. 5 The victim must sign that paper to verify that you have taught them the words. Pets don’t count, even if they are your favorite family members. :( Option # 45: Oral story retell with pictures – COUNTS AS 2 HOMEWORKS 1 Take one of the stories that we have done in class or make up your own using the most recent vocabulary. 2 Fold or draw lines on a paper to make 4-6 squares, draw the story in those 4-6 squares. 3 Tell the story in French to a parent, guardian or teacher by just looking at your pictures without using any written notes. 4 Write down the title for the story in French. Have that person write a note saying you told them the story without reading it off something. 5 Attach the note to your drawing. Option # 46: Postcard (French 2) – DO NOT USE ON LINE TRANSLATORS – COUNTS AS 2 HOMEWORKS 1 Buy a postcard and write to someone in French (minimum 20 words). You can also draw a postcard. 2 Address it correctly (use Street, Name of street, House #) as your address line 3 Write city & state & zip. 4 Draw a stamp on it. Option # 47: Card for a teacher DO NOT USE ON LINE TRANSLATORS – COUNTS AS 2 HOMEWORKS 1 Make a special card for one of your past or present teachers. 2 In French, describe a good memory you have of that teacher or tell how much you appreciate him/her. 3 Decorate the card with quality design, illustrations and decorations. 4 You will get the card back so you can give it to the teacher. (If they don’t speak French , I’m sure they can find someone to translate it.) Minimum 20 words. Option # 48: Note of appreciation DO NOT USE ON LINE TRANSLATORS 1 Make a card for someone you appreciate (your mom, grandparent, dad, friend, pet, etc.) 2 Tell him/her how wonderful s/he is, how much you appreciate what s/he does for you, and how much s/he means to you. 3 Use quality illustrations & a minimum of 20 words in French. 4 You will get the card back once the credit is recorded. Option # 49: Games in French 1 During lunch, come with a partner to our classroom to play games in French. 2 You must sign up ahead of time and you must come on the day you sign up for. 3 You MUST play for 10 minutes. 4 If you do not play for the entire 10 minutes, you must come in a 2nd day and make up the time missed. 5 On a piece of paper, write down the names of your partner(s), the date you played, the game you played, what you learned from each game, (or if scrabble – Write down all the words you make), 6 then have the teacher sign it. Option # 50: Talk to a family member 1 Decide on some of the vocabulary words (at least 5) we have been using in class. 2 Make a list of those words and decide on some sentences. 3 On a piece of paper write down one of the sentences for the family member. 4 Then say the sentence with the vocabulary word in it to your family member. 5 Have them guess what you have said, then translate for them. 6 Continue talking to them using the words & sentences for at least 10 minutes. 7 As you go, teach your family member the vocabulary words. 8 Have your family member sign saying you talked to them and taught them the words on the list. Option # 51: Groupe de conversation - COUNTS AS 2 ASSIGNMENTS 1 Put together a ”Groupe de conversation” (a French conversation group) on an afternoon or evening where you and a partner get together at a designated place with an observer. 2 You discuss various topics within your group in French. 3 An observer (an adult) must sign a note attesting that you participated in the full session for at least 20 minutes. 4 In English, write down a description of what you did in the session. Option # 52: Groupe d’Internet (Internet French exchange) 1 Put together a ”Groupe d’Internet” (a French internet conversation group) where you and a partner get together on the internet and write emails or chat with each other in French. 2 You discuss various topics within your emails or chats in French 3 Copy your chat or emails into a word document and print a copy. 4 An observer (an adult) must sign a note attesting that you participated in the full session for at least 10 minutes. Option # 53: Groupe de Facebook 1 Put together a “Groupe de Facebook” (a French internet conversation group) where you and a partner get together on the internet and write on each other’s walls in French. 2 You discuss various topics within your writings in French. 3 Copy your writings into a word document and print a copy. 4. An observer (an adult) must sign a note attesting that you participated for at least 10 minutes. Option # 54: Conversation par portable (SMS) 1. Pick a time when you and a partner can text (SMS) each other in French. 2. You must discuss various topics in French. 3. You may do this at different times as long as you accumulate at least 10 minutes of SMS time. 4. Download your SMS to your computer and copy to a word document, then print a paper copy. Option # 55: Speaking practice. 1 Draw an illustration of a story from class. Write the title for the story. 2 Tell the story in French to one of your parents or teachers without using written notes. 3 Have the parent/teacher write a comment on your presentation. 4 Have the person you told the story to sign their name. ARTISTIC/SELF-EXPRESSION OPTIONS (many of these could also be “Community building”) Option # 56: Storyboard - COUNTS AS 2 HOMEWORKS 1 Draw an original story out in at least 6 pictures. 2 Under each picture write at least 1 sentence in French telling what is happening. 3 Make quality drawings and neat lettering. 4 The pictures must be related and tell a story. Option # 57: Comic strip - COUNTS AS 2 HOMEWORKS 1 Draw an original comic strip with at least 6 boxes in length. 2 Write the script for it in French. 3 It should be clever and amusing with quality full-color illustrations just like the comics in a newspaper or magazine. 4 At least 4 of the frames must also contain dialogue in French. Option # 58: Collage – COUNTS AS 2 HOMEWORKS 1 Figure out a theme from the vocabulary words we are currently studying and adding some words from your extra lists, if you wish. 2 Cut out pictures from a magazine or the internet. 3 Glue them on a sheet of 8x10 or 9x12 construction paper to make a collage. 4 Then write a story in French about the collage. 5 50 words minimum. Option # 59: Illustrated diary – COUNTS AS 2 HOMEWORKS 1 Write a diary (true or made up) for 3 days in French telling the most interesting, memorable or unusual experience of each day. 2 For each day, write the day and date in French, write at least one sentence in French telling about the experience, then do an illustration in color of the experience. 3 You may use any diary type sheets or create your own format. 4 Ask the teacher for any specialized vocabulary you need. 5 Use a different experience each day; do not repeat any experience twice. Option # 60: Play – COUNTS AS 2 HOMEWORKS 1 Write a story using our MOST RECENT vocabulary words + any of the past ones you want. 2. It must be presentable as a play, e.g. it must contain directions for the actors. 3. It may have speeches for the actors. 4. It must have at least 50 words in it. 5. Circle the newest vocabulary words. Option # 61: Radio Broadcast – COUNTS AS 3 HOMEWORKS 1 Write a story using our MOST RECENT vocabulary words + any of the past ones you want. 2 It must be a story that might be heard on Radio (it can be funny, nonsense, whatever). 3 You may invite friends to participate in the oral part of the broadcast. 4 It must have at least 50 words in it. 5 Bring the script in to Madame Kunert to check for mistakes. 6 Practice at least 2 times before you record the broadcast on a downloadable device. 7 Record the broadcast. 8 Bring the corrected script back along with the recorded broadcast to download on Madame Kunert’s computer. Option # 62: Video of a play COUNTS AS 4 HOMEWORKS 1 Write a story using our MOST RECENT vocabulary words + any of the past ones you want. 2 It must be presentable as a play. 3 It may have speeches for the actors, BE CAREFUL ABOUT THE NUMBER OF CHARACTERS. 4 It must have at least 50 words in it. 5 Give the story to Madame Kunert and she will make any corrections needed. 6 Make an appointment with Madame Kunert to video record the play, IF YOU WANT HER TO VIDEO RECORD IT. 7 If you want to video record it yourself, get a corrected copy from Madame Kunert and get some help from family or friends to be the actors or use the puppets. YOU MUST PRACTICE SAYING THE STORY & ACTING. 8 Video record the play. 9 DOWNLOAD THE VIDEO TO MADAME KUNERT’S COMPUTER. Option # 63: Original song – COUNTS AS 3 HOMEWORKS 1 2 3 4 Write and sing a song in French. Record it on you i-phone or i-pad or perform it live for Madame Kunert or the class. It should be at least one minute long. Include a written script of the lyrics. Option # 64: Commercial ON-LINE TRANSLATOR - COUNTS AS 3 HOMEWORKS NO INTERNET 1 Write up a commercial in French for a made-up (or real) product. 2 You may make a magazine ad (on paper), radio ad or TV ad (record on I-Pad, i-phone,etc.) 3 In the ad, provide the name of the product, give at least 3 reasons we should buy it and include the price. 4 Your ad must be catchy, convincing and entirely in French. 5 The recording must be at least 30 seconds in length; 6 The magazine ad must be in color with quality graphics/ illustrations on a 8.5 x 11 sheet of unlined paper (standard full page magazine). Option # 65: Clothing catalog – COUNTS AS 3 HOMEWORKS INTERNET ON-LINE TRANSLATOR NO 1 Design a page for a clothing catalog. 2 On an unlined piece of paper, A. include color illustrations, B. descriptions in French and C. prices of the clothing items. 3 The clothing items may be of any style or purpose, realistic or imaginative, as long as they are class appropriate. 4 All text must be in French. 5 The page must contain at least 30 words in French. Do not use a translator, use the language you know. Watch noun & adjective agreement. Option # 66: Cover for your favorite book - Design a better cover for your favorite book. – COUNTS AS 3 HOMEWORKS NO TRANSLATOR 1 The front cover must include a full color illustration related to the book. 2 Include the title and the author’s name. 3 The back must include a brief description of the book. a Include at least 3 made –up reviews of the book (& names of the fictitious reviewers)–– all in French. 4 Do not plagiarize anything off the back cover of the real book; use your own words. 5 The description and reviews must contain a total of at least 30 words in French. Option # 67: Magazine Cover – COUNTS AS 2 HOMEWORKS - NO TRANSLATOR 1 Make a cover for your favorite magazine in French – Write in French announcements about what’s in it. 2 Use drawn or cut out pictures, titles and short bits of information that would peak the interest of someone who would like to read your magazine. 3 Your magazine cover may be a drawn, computer graphics, magazine cut-outs, or any other format you choose. 4 Make sure your magazine front colorful, interesting and well-designed. It must include at least 30 French words. Option # 68: Floor plan HOMEWORKS NO ON-LINE TRANSLATOR – COUNTS AS 3 1 Using your vocabulary list look up and draw the floor plan to your house or a house you would like to have (graph paper makes it easier). 2 Label each room in French, then draw and label in French the most important or interesting pieces of furniture in each room. 3 Each room should include at least 3 pieces of furniture or appliances. 4 Then on the back of the drawing or on another piece of paper write what you like about the house you just drew. 5 Hand both in. Option # 69: Pet Poster HOMEWORKS NO ON-LINE TRANSLATOR – COUNTS AS 2 Make a poster about one of your pets. 1 Use colored paper (9 x 12 inches or 8.5 x 11 inches in size) for the background. 2 Attach photographs, illustrations or graphics representing your pet. 3 In French, write a description of or poem about your pet telling why s/he is unique. 4 Include the description or poem on the poster. 5 Write at least 30 words in French. Do not use a translator of any sort. Option # 70: Poster about an important person – COUNTS AS 3 HOMEWORKS Make a poster about a person you think is important. 1 This person can be someone you’ve met, someone you’d like to meet, or a historical figure. 2 Use colored paper (9 x 12 inches or 8.5 x 11 inches in size) for the background. 3 Attach photographs, illustrations or graphics representing the important person. 4 In French, write a description of or poem about the person telling why s/he is important to you. 5 Include the description or poem on the poster. Write at least 30 words in French. (NO TRANSLATOR) Option # 71: Poster about French – COUNTS AS 3 HOMEWORKS 1 Make a poster to convince other people to take French. 2 Your poster must be on colored paper (8.5x11” or 9x12”). 3 On the poster, include at least 10 true reasons for how the class will benefit them. 4 Include graphics/illustrations/photographs/lettering to make your poster eye-catching. 5 Your poster should be in English--any French you use should be understandable to someone who hasn’t taken French yet. TECHNOLOGY OPTIONS Option # 72: Powerpoint presentation French subject NO TRANSLATOR COUNTS AS 3 HOMEWORKS- about any 1 Create a PowerPoint presentation in French. 2 The presentation must contain at least 10 slides: 3 1 slide with the title and author’s name, 4 8 slides with at least one sentence in French per slide. Option # 73: French language practice Practice listening and speaking French on the internet or an I-pad app. 1 Choose an I-pad app (such as Duolingo, busuu, MindSnacks French) or a podcast (see Option # 7) or another internet site (such as http://www.quizlet.com, http://www.education.vic.gov.au/languagesonline/french/french.htm, http://www.quia.com, or www.lepointdufle.net/french-learning-material.htm.) to practice French. 2 Practice French for at least 15 minutes. 3 Write down the name of the app or the specific site you used to practice French. 4 Write down the title or theme of what you practiced. 5 In an English paragraph, describe in your own words what you learned, how difficult or easy it was, and how much you liked the app/site. 6 Have an adult observer (parent, teacher) sign that you practiced for 15 minutes. REVIEW/MISCELLANEOUS OPTIONS Option # 74: Chapter Worksheet - COUNTS AS 2 HOMEWORKS 1 Invent an Exercise for the vocabulary we are doing in class. 2 It must be based on the Chapter story and contain at least 10 items. 3 It must be different from class exercises, and it must be in French. 4 Write clear instructions in English. 5 Turn in your exercise with no answers on it. 6 Turn in a key as well on a separate piece of paper. Option # 75: Grammar––“ils/elles” they form 1 Use a copy of a story in French that we have done in s/he form in class. 2 Change the main character to two people (as if the main character did everything with his/her best friend). 3 Make sure to change the articles (un/une, des, il/elle, ils/elles, etc.) and the adjectives, too. 4 Underline any words that need changing, and write the complete word above. 5 Do not change any of the other characters in the story, which would be too complicated for you. Option # 76: UNIT review - COUNTS AS 3 HOMEWORKS Your review will have 3 parts. A. Do parts 1 & 2 on one side of an unlined piece of paper. Do part 3 on the other side of the paper. 1) In English, tell how verbs change when talking about “je”, “tu” or “il/elle”. Give a minimum of 5 examples. 2) Make a list in French of at least 10 vocabulary words from the unit that you need to review. 3) A On the other side of the paper, make “un dessin fou” (a crazy drawing) that contains all of the words from the review list you made for #2. B Label each word in French on the illustration. C The illustration must be in color. Option # 77: Marking Period Exam—Speaking (French 1 and 2) – COUNTS AS 3 HOMEWORKS 1 Design the speaking section for a MP test. 2 Create a speaking assignment that can be prepared and carried out in 5 minutes. 3 The goal of the speaking section is for students to show the teacher how well they can speak French spontaneously (without memorization or written notes). 4 Write complete instructions in English for your test idea and include a grading scale. 5 The best idea(s) will be used for the test. 6 You may use drawings that reflect the vocabulary we have used for them to use to tell about. Option # 78: Class review - COUNTS AS 3 ASSIGNMENTS 1 Create an activity for reviewing all the vocabulary we’ve studied since the first day of school. 2 The activity should keep all students engaged for 45 - 60 minutes. 3 It should include as many words as possible from the word lists/your vocabulary dictionary. 4 Write complete instructions in English for your activity. 5 The best idea(s) will be used to review for a test. Option # 79: Vocab review 1 Pick 10 words from vocabulary we are using that you need to review the most. 2 Write an interesting and original sentence for each word that lets the reader know the meaning of the word from the sentence. 3 Circle the word in the sentence. 4 Write the sentences in a perspective different from s/he Option # 80: Composition about your brothers and sisters ILS/ELLES – THEY – COUNTS AS 2 HOMEWORKS 1Write a composition in French on the topic “My brothers and sisters.” 2 Are your siblings important in your life? 3 What are your relationships with your siblings like? 4 If you are an only child, describe the advantages and disadvantages of not having siblings. 5 Write at least 50 words in the best French you can. 6 Remember you will be using s/he form when discussing 1 of them and “ils/elles” form when talking about them together. You should use both forms in your story. Option # 81: Art critique of a French Artist’s work (architecture, drawing, painting, sculpture, etc.) COUNTS AS 2 HOMEWORKS 1 Find a color print of a work of art made by a French artist (look on the internet, in the library, at home, or with the help of the art teacher). 2 Write a critique of the artwork. 3 The critique should include: A.the name of the artist, B. his/her country of origin, C.the name of the piece, D. the date it was made, E. a brief description of the piece, F. what you like or dislike of the piece, and the message or purpose of the piece. 4. Your essay should be at least 50 words long. 5.Turn in the print with your critique. Option # 82: My vacation “meilleures or pires” best or worst - NO TRANSLATOR 1 Write a composition on the topic “the best and worst of my Thanksgiving /Christmas/ 4 th of July/ etc. vacation.” 2 Write at least 50 words in your best French, include lots of funny, nice or crazy information depending on which type you are doing. Option # 83: The French alphabet – COUNTS AS 2 HOMEWORKS 1 Make a poster or book containing all the letters of the French alphabet. 2 Remember to include accent marks in words. 3 For each letter, select a word beginning with that letter. 4 Select an illustration or graphic representing the word. Option # 84: A news event 1 In a magazine or newspaper 2 find an article in English with news about a French-speaking country or about the French language. 3 Write a summary of the article in English, at least 50 words long. 4 Cut out or photocopy the article and staple it to your summary. Option # 85: Sequel to a story 1 Write a sequel to a story we told in class. 2 Tell what will happen next. 3 Write at least 50 words in French. 4 You may NOT count the words copied from a copy of the original story. Option # 86: French language magazine – COUNTS AS 2 HOMEWORKS 1 Come during lunch to borrow a French-language magazine from Madame Kunert or buy your own. 2 Flip through the magazine. 3 Read at least one article in it. 4 Write at least 50 words in ENGLISH describing the article that you read and your opinion of the magazine in general ( how you like it, are there good articles, how is it different from what you normally read). 5 Turn in the magazine with your paragraph (I will return a purchased magazine to you after reading your composition.) 6 Use your own words, don’t use the article or translator to copy from. Option # 87: Your summer (near future tense – use “je vais” or “nous allons”) – NO TRANSLATOR 1 Tell me something interesting you plan to do this coming summer. 2 Write at least 50 words in French. 3 Use the near future when writing this – Je vais - I’m going to/ Nous allons– We are going to, etc. EX. Cet été je vais beaucoup dormir. Je vais aussi aller à la plage avec mes copains. Option # 88: Your summer – Past - NO TRANSLATOR 1 Tell me something interesting that happened to you this past summer. 2 Write at least 50 words in French. Option # 89: A futuristic story – NO TRANSLATOR 1 Write a story in French that takes place in the future. 2 Use the vocabulary words we are currently studying in class. Use the “va” form for the near future. EX: Vendredi, Paul va aller à une fête d’anniversaire. Il va manger de la pizza et danser. 4 Your story should be at least 50 words long. Option # 90: Teach French in class – COUNTS AS 3 HOMEWORKS 1 Write a simple 6-sentence story for French (use the words we are currently studying & the structures we are studying). 2 Show the story to Madame Kunert. 3 Illustrate the story in 6 squares. 4 Present the story to the class during your class period. a. first with actors from the class (practice with them ahead of time) b. use your illustrations copied for the class to have (I will copy it for you, if you need me to). Option # 91: Your future – Use the near future (je vais) 1 Write a description of something you’re going to do in the future. 2 Write at least 50 words; use the near future. Option # 92: French language poetry 1 Read a poem in French (a list of poems is on my e-board). 2 Write a composition in ENGLISH at least 100 words long giving your interpretation of and commentary about the poem. 3 Turn in a copy of the poem with your paragraph. Option # 93: Diorama for a story in class. – COUNTS AS 3 HOMEWORKS 1 Make a diorama that shows your favorite part for a story we have done in class. 2 Make the diorama in a small box of some sort. 3 Decorate the ceiling/sky, the walls/background and the floor/ground of the scene you are representing. 4 Include figures representing the action of the scene. 5 Write a story about the scene including a description of the scene in 50 words. 6 Attach the story to the outside of the box. Option # 94: Interview in French – NO TRANSLATOR – COUNTS AS 2 HOMEWORKS 1 In French, interview a French speaker. 2 Before the interview, write down 10 questions to learn something new and interesting about the person. 3 Record the interview. 4 Ask your 10 questions, plus 2 more that occur to you during the interview. 5 Turn in the recording and your list of questions. 6 Have the person you interviewed sign your list of questions and answers as proof of the interview. Option # 95: Illustrated autobiography - COUNTS AS 2 HOMEWORKS 1 In 4-6 squares, illustrate in color an experience from your life. 2 It can be an important event or just a typical day of your life. 3 In each square, explain in French what’s happening. 4 Write at least 2 complex sentences per square in French. Option # 96: French Christmas – COUNTS AS 2 HOMEWORKS 1 Research any French Christmas tradition. 2 Make a poster about the tradition. 3 On the poster, include illustrations of the tradition. 4 Include a paragraph explaining the tradition: a. in what country (or countries) it’s celebrated, b. where it’s celebrated (in the countryside, the city, the street, in church, at home, etc.) c. who the celebration is for (children, women, men, etc.). 5 Your poster should be 11”x 14” and the paragraph at least 100 words long. Option # 97: 10 questions – NO TRANSLATOR 1 Write a list of 10 questions in French that you would like to ask someone you admire. 2 In the title, include the name of the person the questions are for. 3 Make your questions related to the personality, profession and/or interests of the person. 4 Be sure to use your question words & question format. Option # 98: Illustrated diary: Winter break – COUNTS AS 3 HOMEWORKS 1 During our winter vacation, keep a diary in French telling the most interesting, memorable or unusual experience of each day. 2 For each day, write the day and date in French, write at least two sentences in French telling about the experience, then do an illustration in color of the experience. 3 You may use a regular diary sheet or create your own format. 4 Ask the teacher for any specialized vocabulary you need. 5 Use a different experience each day; do not repeat any experience twice. Option # 99: Your own idea (must be approved by your French teacher) You are to write on a sheet of paper what you want to do for homework and present it to Madame Kunert – before school, after school or during lunch to be approved BEFORE YOU DO THE ASSIGNMENT.
