I. REGISTRATION INFORMATION
The purpose of this guide is to briefly explain how to use the registration system in
MyAccess. Using MyAccess, you can go online and see the courses in which you are
enrolled and make changes to your schedule, if necessary.
•
•
•
•
•
To log into MyAccess, see pages 5-7.
If you have not already done so, you should go online and review the courses in which you
are enrolled (see pages 7-10). If you are satisfied with the courses for which you are
registered, then you do not have to do anything further. However, most students find that
they want to make some adjustments to their Fall and Spring schedules.
If you are waitlisted for a course and wish to see your place on the waitlist for a particular
class, see page 11.
To claim your seat as a waitlist lottery winner, see page 11.
To add yourself to an open course, add yourself to the waitlist for a closed course, or drop
yourself from a course in which you are enrolled or waitlisted, see page 10.
II. ONLINE REGISTRATION RESOURCES
The following online resources are available in order to assist your course selections:
2
A. Online Curriculum Guide
http://apps.law.georgetown.edu/curriculum/
B. Open/Closed Lists for Fall 2014 and Spring 2015
Updated lists will be available each day during the Add/Drop period:
http://www.law.georgetown.edu/campus-services/registrar/course-registration/RegistrationInformation.cfm
Additional schedule planning resources can be found in Appendix A.
III.
COURSES WITH RESTRICTIONS
A. Prerequisites
If a course has one or more prerequisite course requirements, it will be specified in the
Curriculum Guide. If you attempt to add yourself to a course for which you lack a
prerequisite, you will receive the message “Prerequisite and Test Score Error” and will not be
able to add yourself to the course (see Appendix B). MyAccess keeps track of all the courses
you have taken at Georgetown but may not track courses you have taken elsewhere.
• If you get a “Prerequisite and Test Score error” message but believe that a course you
have taken elsewhere should satisfy the prerequisite requirement, then you should send
an email to the Office of the Registrar at lawreg@law.georgetown.edu so that we can
verify the requirement and enroll or waitlist you in the course.
• Sometimes students who have not taken the requisite courses believe that their work
experience or other coursework should provide the necessary background knowledge to
be successful in the course. These students should contact the professor and request a
waiver of the prerequisite and also send an email to the Office of the Registrar
(lawreg@law.georgetown.edu) indicating that they have requested a waiver. Waivers for
Fall 2014 courses must be submitted to the Office of the Registrar, no later than the
first day of add/drop (Tuesday, September 2nd). No special form is required.
• Note for Spring 2015 registration: You will be permitted to enroll in a Spring course that
requires a prerequisite, but if by the end of the Fall 2014 Add/Drop period you have not
enrolled in or obtained a waiver from the professor for the prerequisite course, the course
will be dropped from your schedule.
B. Time Conflicts (Overlaps)
Under no circumstance can a student enroll in courses which have a time conflict.
Therefore, the course scheduling program will not permit enrollment in courses with
overlapping times (see Appendix B).
C. Professor Permission
If a course has a professor permission notation in the Curriculum Guide permission of the
professor is required. Professors will provide a list of accepted students to the Office of the
Registrar, and the students on that list will be enrolled (see Appendix B).
D. Mutually Exclusive Courses
If a course has a Mutually Exclusive notation in the Curriculum Guide, it is mutually
exclusive with at least one other Law Center course. Students will not be enrolled in two
mutually exclusive courses, whether the courses are in the same or different semesters (see
Appendix B).
E. Enrolling in Graduate Courses
3
We offer both J.D.-level and graduate-level courses. J.D.-level courses have a “LAWJ”
designation. Graduate-level courses have a “LAWG” designation. J.D. students are free to
take up to 6 credits of non-cross-listed courses in the Graduate Program at the Law Center.
F. Cross-Listed Courses
Cross-listed courses are designated with different course departments. These cross-listed
courses have a certain number of seats allocated to J.D. students and Graduate students.
These courses have the same course number for both J.D. and Graduate students, but begin
with the prefix “LAWJ” for J.D. students and “LAWG” for Graduate students. J.D. students
must register for a cross-listed course using the “LAWJ” prefix.
See Registration Regulations/Guidelines at Appendix C.
IV.
ADDING, DROPPING, AND WAITLISTING THROUGH MYACCESS
Registering for classes at Georgetown Law is accomplished through an online application,

(See Appendix E for the Registration Timeline). Beginning at 1:00 PM Eastern Standard
Time on August 25, 2014, you will be able to add, drop, and waitlist courses for both the Fall

APPENDIX F: TAKING COURSES OUTSIDE THE LAW CENTER
A. Credit for Courses in the Graduate Schools of the University

Some courses in other graduate schools of the university are “cross-listed” with
Georgetown Law. Georgetown Law students must register for these courses via the
Georgetown Law registration process, using the LAWJ number appearing in this
course schedule.\

J.D. students may take a maximum of 6 credits of graduate-level courses on the Main
Campus of the University with the permission of an academic advisor. Because all
students earning a J.D. from the Georgetown Law must take 54 credits at the Law
Center, transfer students who are eligible to transfer in 31 credits from their previous
law school may not be eligible to take courses on the Main Campus for credit.

Students do not preregister for Main Campus courses during the Law Center’s
preregistration process and may not enroll themselves in Main Campus courses.
Students seeking approval to take a Main Campus course in the Graduate or
Undergraduate Schools should contact the Director of J.D. Programs at 202-662-9041
to schedule an appointment. Requests for Spring 2015 courses are due by January 2,
2015.

PLEASE NOTE: Classes on the main university campus begin in the Spring on
Wednesday, January 7, 2015. Business School classes may follow a different
schedule than other schools or departments on the Main Campus.
B. Credit for Study Outside the Law Center
Credit for courses taken outside the Law Center's J.D. or Graduate Programs is given under
the circumstances described below. Students should be aware of the following academic
policies that apply to transfer of credit from another division of the University or another
institution.




Students considering taking classes and transferring credit from other ABA-approved law
schools must consult with the Director of J.D. Programs at 202-662-9041 or 352
McDonough Hall to be advised of all applicable rules and necessary procedures and to
obtain approval for the course work. Students must have a compelling reason to request
permission to take a course at another law school in the Washington, D.C., area during a
semester in which the student is enrolled at the Law Center. The Law Center will accept
no more than 6 credits in this situation and the courses must be approved prior to the
student's enrollment at the other law school.
Under certain circumstances, credit for clinical programs will not transfer. Students
contemplating taking a clinical course at another ABA-approved law school must consult
the Associate or Assistant Dean for Clinical Programs before enrolling in the course.
A minimum of 54 credits must be earned at the Law Center.
A passing grade is required for transfer of any credits from another school toward the
degree requirements at the Law Center.
16



All approved credits undertaken at another ABA-approved law school will be displayed
on the student's Law Center transcript. These grades are not included in the student's Law
Center cumulative grade point average.
Please refer to the Georgetown Law Student Handbook section, Academic Evaluation and
Attrition Standards, for the rules that govern how courses taken at other schools affect
academic evaluation and attrition and academic and graduation honors.
No credit is given for internships or externships offered at other institutions.
For more information about taking courses outside of the Law Center, please see the
Georgetown Law Student Handbook.
