PURDUE UNIVERSITY DEPARTMENT OF FOREIGN LANGUAGES & LITERATURES Spanish 101: Spring 2012 Director: Professor Colleen Neary-Sundquist Staff Coordinator: Nicole Roger-Hogan SC 107 (x61692, nicolete@purdue.edu) Instructor: ________________ Class Time: ______________________ Office: ___________________ E-mail Address: __________________ Course Division: __________________ Office Hours: __________________ Classroom: ______________________ ¡Bienvenidos a español 101! We hope that your experience in Spanish 101 will be a positive one. After this course, you will have acquired a Hispanic cultural perspective and basic survival skills in Spanish for most everyday situations. Much of your success or failure in this course will depend more on your consistency in completing all of your course assignments than in doing well on the three exams. Please read through the syllabus carefully. Your instructor will provide you with an office and an e-mail address where s/he can be reached, as well as office hours when s/he will be available to answer any questions you may have. Do not wait until you have serious academic problems to contact your instructor. Also, starting the third week of the semester, undergraduate tutors will be available free of charge in SC 113. (Schedule on door) Please contact Señora Roger-Hogan or Professor Neary-Sundquist if you have any comments, questions, or concerns related to Spanish 101. I. ATTENDANCE AND CLASS PARTICIPATION (20 % of your final grade) Note that attendance is calculated as a strict percentage of the number of times you were in class – in other words, every unexcused absence in class counts against your overall semester grade. If you have more than 6 unexcused absences in the class, you will automatically receive an F for the course. Excused absences include family emergencies, illness, or medical complications that are proven by a doctor or a nurse’s signature with the specific date of the absence clearly indicated. However, excusing absences remains the prerogative of the instructor and the program director: no absences are excused automatically. Student athletes, band members, and other affiliates of similar university organizations might miss class to attend official events. In that case students must, at the beginning of the semester, give their instructors a letter from their supervisor or department indicating the days they will be absent from class during the semester. You will earn your participation grade by attending the three contact days, being well prepared, and volunteering answers frequently. IV. EXAMS (50 % of your final grade) There will be three exams (Exams 1, 2, & Final) during the semester. All three exams include an oral interview and a listening comprehension section. The listening comprehension will accompany the written portion of Exams 1 & 2. For the final, however, the listening comprehension portion of the exam will take place during the last week of classes. Oral Interviews and exams will take place in the labs reserved for this course. *Under NO circumstances will any exam be given EARLY. *Please note that the FINAL EXAM will be given during the first week of May (April 30-May 5). DO NOT MAKE PLANS TO LEAVE UNTIL THE FINAL EXAM SCHEDULE IS POSTED. V. MAKE-UPS No make-ups of exams or Blackboard and Centro activities will be allowed, except in the case of a verifiable serious illness. NO INCOMPLETES WILL BE GIVEN IN THIS COURSE. VI. BLACKBOARD ACTIVITIES: http://www.itap.purdue.edu/tlt/blackboard/ (20 % of your final grade) There are two Blackboard activities: Calet and Cultura These activities are to be done individually and will be available for ten (10) days. After that period, the activities will close, and you will no longer be allowed to complete or modify your submissions. If you do not submit during the ten (10) days, you will receive a grade of zero (0) for that activity. You can either complete them at home, or use the lab reserved for you in SC on Thursdays. “Calet” is a time-sensitive end of chapter quiz and is divided into FIVE parts. It is computer graded. “Cultura” is a time-sensitive end of chapter quiz about the video Sol y viento, also computer-graded. Aside from these interactive activities, you will also find your “Course Objectives” and your “Guidelines” in Blackboard. You need to attend the first lab throughout the semester. For the second lab, however, you only need to be present five times: for training during weeks 1 and 2, and for Exam 1 and the oral interviews for Exam 2 and the final during weeks 5, 11, and 16. VII. CENTRO ACTIVITIES (10%) You must complete all Centro activities by their due dates on Thursdays and Sundays in order to receive credit for them. VIII. STUDENTS WITH SPECIAL NEEDS If you have special needs related to a disability which may affect your performance in this course, please, speak with your instructor privately to discuss your needs. You must be registered with the Adaptive Services Office in the Dean of Students Office before accommodations can be made. IX. CHEATING According to Purdue University regulations: "Dishonesty in connection with any University activity constitutes misconduct for which students may be subject to administrative action or disciplinary penalties. Cheating, plagiarism, or knowingly furnishing false information to the University are examples of dishonesty." X. CAMPUS EMERGENCY In the event of a major campus emergency, course requirements, deadlines, and grading percentages will be subject to changes that may be necessitated by a revised semester calendar or other circumstances. If and when this occurs, your instructor will tell you how to proceed with your class. For more on emergency, go to Emergency Procedures Handbook at http://www.purdue.edu/fire/safety_handbook.pdf XI. PHONES All phones or other electronic communication devices designed to reach the outside world must be turned off and put away during class. Any student seen either texting or checking his or her phone will be asked to leave. 2 SPANISH 101 WEEK 1 2 DATE Jan. 9-13 Jan. 16-20 MW: CLASS TTH: LAB DAY ACTIVITY 1 Orientación 2 Lab: Preliminar 1 3 Preliminar 2 4 Lab: Introduction 1 1 2 3 4 3 4 Jan. 23-27 Jan. 30-Feb. 3 5 Feb. 6-10 6 Feb. 13-17 SPRING 2012 ASSIGNMENTS Blackboard (BB): Calet and Cultura Preliminar Martin Luther King Day No class!!!
