Elizabeth Piatt The Webliography of Mathematics (9th-12th) 1) Experience Math and Science with Gizmos http://www.explorelearning.com/ Explore learning is a library of online interactive simulations for math and science in grades 3-12. They provide visual explanations of many difficult concepts at each grade level according to the standards. I have personally used this website in algebra 1 and geometry to demonstrate topics that are difficult to visualize from a teacher drawing. 2) Khan Academy http://www.khanacademy.org/ Khan academy stores over 4,200 videos covering math and science topics. Students and teachers can view the video to learn a topic being covered in class. I find this site most helpful for students that have been absent or need to be re-taught the material. The teaching methods used by the instructors in the videos are similar to the most common methods used in the classroom. 3) Regents Exam Prep Center http://www.regentsprep.org/ The regents prep center is a great source for any student looking to study for their Regents exam. All the subjects, including math, covered by the exam are listed on the website and broken down by individual standards. Students can relearn any topic covered and take a quiz at the end to check for understanding. 4) Brain Pop http://www.brainpop.com/ Brain Pop created animated videos and games for all subject areas in high school. All content on the site is focused on the new common core standards to provide students with the most up to date information. This is a great site for students that are bored with listening to a teacher explaining the topic. For many students the animation grabs their attention and helps them learn the content. 5) Cool Math http://coolmath.com/ Cool math’s goal is to make pre-algebra, algebra, and geometry fun while teaching content students don’t understand. This site provides lessons, practice, a math dictionary, and games for students to explore. The games on this site a great for students needing to work on basic math skills. 6) The World of Math Online http://www.math.com/ The world of math provides students with explanation of math content from basic math through calculus. This is a basic website that doesn’t have a lot eye catching distractions, but the content is good. Teachers use this website to create worksheets. You can customize the worksheet to fit your needs in the classroom. I personally use the worksheet generator to find new problems to practice in class and on homework. 7) The Common Core Standards http://www.corestandards.org/ The common core website has become a very important website as the state of New York switches to the new curriculum. This site explains in detail, grades k-12, the new standards and content for Mathematics and English. There are no example problems posted at this time, but each standard is broken down with an explanation of the topic needing to be covered. 8) Web Math http://www.webmath.com/ Web math is a division of Discovery Education. This site provides tutorials and examples on math topics k-12. Students can type in a homework problem and web math will show them how to solve it. I have not used this site in my classroom, but it’s another tool teachers can post of their websites for students to visit when struggling. 9) PBS Learning Media http://www.pbslearningmedia.org/ PBS learning media is a collection of video demonstrations in all high school subjects. There are many math videos covering grades k-12, but the main focus is high school math. Students can view a variety of videos from animation, teacher explanation, and visuals. This is another great site that can help students relearn content they did not understand in class. 10) IXL! http://www.ixl.com/ IXL is a mathematical website covering kindergarten through Geometry content. The state standards for all 50 states are provided, so students and teachers can find content covered in their specific state. Each subject area listed provides practice problems for students to work out with immediate feedback. This web site would be helpful for students needing extra practice problems to study for an upcoming exam.
