Manifest Destiny Book Directions
1. Cover – decorate with an illustration symbolic of Westward Expansion. Title the
book “Manifest Destiny”. Illustration and title must take up all the space on the
cover (make it BIG). Must be in color –NO REGULAR PENCIL!!! (5 points)
2. Pg 1 – Write the definition of Manifest Destiny – your own from the class
discussion AND the definition from the book. (5 points)
3. Pg 2 – Complete the chart comparing the 7 different territorial acquisitions of
the United States. (10 points)
4. Pg 3 – Use the chart on pg 2 to create a map of the United States showing all 8
of the US territorial expansions. Color each expansion a different color. Make a
key corresponding the colors with the name and date of each expansion. (15
points)
5. Pg 4 – Create a timeline placing all of the US territorial expansions and their
dates on it. Place the dates on top and the expansion on bottom. Then write a brief
history of how and why we gained that land – be specific (talk about key people,
places, battles if appropriate, treaties). (20 points)
6. Pg 5 – Fill out the T-Chart comparing arguments for and against (Pros and
Cons) Manifest Destiny. (10 Points)
7. Pg 6 - Using information from the T-Chart write a 3 paragraph essay explaining
your position on Manifest Destiny (introduction, body, conclusion). Use
paragraph leveling to write your essay (give at least 2 reasons with specific
examples to back up each reason). (25 points)
8. Must be colorful and neat. NO REGULAR PENCIL!!!! (10 points) – if
you use regular pencil this portion will receive a score of zero.
