Differentiation from First Principles
Let us differentiate y  x 2 from first principles.
The derivative represents the instantaneous gradient at any given point.

To find the gradient at the point (x, x2) we can
take a point nearby, (x + h, (x + h)2) and
calculate the gradient between these points.
The closer the points are the better our result

There can be some confusion with the notations for inverse trigonometric functions.

We also use derivatives for finding stationary points or for examining the behaviour of a curve.

To summarize:

increasing or decreasing.
