ACTIVITY ONE - BACKGROUND
1. At this very moment, think about your personality and how you have been raised. In particular,
think of your home life and the values espoused by your family/guardians and your community
(St. John’s, Portugal Cove - St. Phillips, friends, sports groups, musical groups, church/youth
groups, clubs, volunteer organizations, etc.)
Based on your current lifestyle, NOT on your desired choices, where do you think (a) you & (b)

2. Beatrice’s mother once told her that, “without a faction, we have no purpose and no reason to
live” (Divergent, p.20). Beatrice is concerned that she might not belong to any faction and may
end up on the streets with the factionless. Her fear is heightened once she learns that she is
Divergent.

ACTIVITY TWO - INDIVIDUAL ACTIVITY
We will have our own choosing ceremony. You will bring in an item that represents the faction
you will be choosing – the faction that fits you and your lifestyle. You must pick a faction – You
cannot choose ‘Divergent’.
You may stay in your original birth faction or change factions, but your decision is final. You
may not discuss your decision with anyone or else you will be declared factionless. To help
you decide, here is a flow chart to help guide your choices:

Each faction has a symbol that represents them. They are as follows:
Each image in each symbol is also in the colours that represent their faction – Abnegation is light grey,
Amity is red, Candor is black, Erudite is blue and Dauntless is yellow-orange.

ACTIVITY SEVEN – FACTION ACTIVITY – MANIFESTO DEVELOPMENT
In your factions, review your faction’s Manifesto (End of the book, pp.35-48, Divergent).
(a) Create a poem that reflects, but does not copy, the sentiments of your faction’s Manifesto.
Paper will be provided so that you can write and present a large scale version. You will work
as a group on the larger work however; each group member must have the poem in their
booklet.

ACTIVITY EIGHT – INDIVIDUAL ACTIVITY – THEMES
A theme is an overall message from a book. Books can have more than one theme. In this novel,
there are several ideas that are presented as themes – Choices, Fear, Identity, Family,
Power/Leadership, Class Structure, Conformity, Coming of Age. Choose two of them and show
how they overlap, interact with and build upon one another (Examples would include a
character’s actions, decisions or words that demonstrate more than one theme). Please write
this in a multi-paragraph format and include examples from the text to back up your answer.

ACTIVITY NINE – FACTION ACTIVITY – INITIATION PLAN
In your factions,
(i) You will have to devise a creative 10 step Faction Initiation Plan that:
(a) mirrors your faction’s philosophy
(b) includes specific details from the text
(c) includes references to various NL settings
(d) includes penalties for failure(s) of various initiation stages
(e) includes a ranking system.
Warning/Caveat: Under no circumstances are students permitted to attempt any of the
initiation stages or encourage others to do so. This is a paper project only.
