**You must register with DHS prior to seeking additional agency assistance. DHS will
give you a letter that details their decision. If DHS does not offer full assistance, you
must present their letter along with additional information to the agency**
**Each agency has specific required information you must obtain prior to seeking their
help. These agencies will not offer their assistance until you have the required
information.
2-1-1 A free three-digit health and human services assistance line operated by the
Capital Area United Way, is available for residents to get information on services such as
rent and utility assistance, food, counseling, clothing, shelter, health care needs,
substance abuse services, support groups, housing and much more.

 Day Shelter – weekends only. Saturday and Sunday 8:30am-4:30pm. Three free
meals each day. May accept volunteers on weekends.
 Other services offered by Advent House:
Employment Training Program – the “Good Work” employment program provides
basic life-skills and employment readiness training to homeless adults, assisting them in
making a successful transition into stable housing and employment. Training includes
budgets, goal setting, how to listen to a supervisor, childcare, and more. Call during the
week to find out about eligibility criteria. Classes located at various sites: VOA, City
Rescue Mission, Michigan Works.
Three Shelter Homes – each home shelters one family for a year during which time a
team, including staff and volunteers, mentors the family. This team helps the family
locate permanent housing, and address other personal issues. After a 30-day probationary
period, guest families are required to pay a monthly program fee and utilities, as wall as
put money aside for savings.

Clients must have identification for themselves and other family members needing
assistance.
 Emergency Shelter – Staff coordinate with area public shelters to secure space
for clients seeking shelter assistance. In the event that shelters are full or there are
some other outstanding circumstances, a motel room may be provided by the Red
Cross on a very limited basis. Examples of eligibility are: red tag notices,
eviction notices, agency referral with verification, families or individuals with
medical conditions prohibiting them from using public shelter.
 Emergency Food – Assistance with food and formula. Families and individuals
are eligible for this service once every 60 days, in the event of unexpected
emergencies. Referrals are given to agencies that may be of further assistance.

assault cases. Children’s age limit is 18 years. Provide sexual assault services, including

Housing for homeless women and women with children only. 16 apartment, transitional
living program. May stay up to 2 years. Client can call and either be put on a waiting list
or may be asked to come in for an intensive intake. Must meet eligibility requirements:
currently in a shelter or current/on-going eviction, source of income, commitment to one
year in the program, willing to attend school and/or work, 90 days of sobriety. Rent fees
are 1-bedroom-$312/mo, 2-bedroom-$378/mo. Must attend weekly group meetings. Onsite case managers available. Housing vouchers such as TBRA is not offered through
Ballentine.

The Baby Pantry – Shiawassee County

maternity clothing, and formula when available. Open the 2nd and 4th Monday of every

Capital Area Center for Independent Living

Information and referrals for disabled persons. Also provides advocacy, case
management and independent living skills training. Serves people with disabilities
regardless of income. Certification for Spectran, job mentoring/coaching and Circles

and 1pm-5pm, Friday 9am-12pm. No fee.

 Must go to DHS First as they will ask for a referral.
 This program assists with a variety of homeless services ranging from assistance
with food, intensive case management, and assistance with first month’s rent if
eligible.
 They also offer money management, energy smart, and life skills workshops
every month.
 We can provide a referral for you and fax it to them to assist in making the
process go a little quicker.
 Rental Assistance: Once in a 12 month period, as funds are available. You will
need to have some type of income.
 Emergency Services—Helps with rent, utilities, commodities. Must have DHS
referral.
 Expanded Homeless Program—Case management program that helps the
homeless secure housing. Caseworker services continue 6 months after obtaining
housing. Help with security deposit and first month’s rent, plus additional
casework services. Must have DHS (Dept. of Human Services) referral. Contact

 Must show: DHS decision letter, court summons to appear or court decision
notice, eviction notice, proof of income, picture ID, if homeless, a verification
letter (from a shelter)
 Commodity Supplemental Food Program—Commodity foods for low-income
individuals and families, food for low-income pregnant, postpartum, and breastfeeding women, infants and children under age 6 and NOT on the WIC program.
Also seniors 60 years and older. Must provide proof of income, residency and
social security number of everyone in the household.

 Handicapper Service Program for adults with physical, mental, and emotional
disabilities. Variety of supportive casework services and assistance available.
 Senior Programs and Services include: translation/interpretation, referrals, food,
clothing, transportation, advocacy, health care assistance, home repair and
maintenance.

Assistance with clothing, household items, furniture. Operate clothing bank
that clients can choose clothing from. Clients needing furniture are put on a
waiting list and donations are matched to requests and delivered to clients, as they
are available.
Assistance with Food: Distributes food to low-income families once every 30
days. Family must have: emergency need, identification and/or social security
card, and a document verifying the number of people in the family.
Makes available donated furniture to families that are in need. Call or drop-in to
sign up on waiting list.
After school program: ages 7 and up, Monday-Friday 3pm-6pm. Drop-in center,
board games, sports, work on computers, arts & crafts, field trips, chess club,
tutoring

Medical Assistance: when available, vouchers are given to low-income Ingham
county residents without insurance who have an emergency need for a
prescription (1 time per 12 months.) Also, stock OTC medications.

 You need to go to DHS to either open a case or let your caseworker know that
you are homeless. They will ask for your homeless verification form.
 To be eligible for their assistance you will need current ID, proof that you are
homeless, and have some type of income.
 You are going to ask for Homeless Assistance.
 What they are usually able to help with is a portion of first month’s rent and/or
deposit.

Faith-based organization providing assistance in finding and keeping employment for
female ex-offenders, their families, and dislocated workers either eligible to collect
unemployment or those who have exhausted their unemployment. Mental health and
substance abuse resources are also available.

Clothing, furniture and household items are free on a once a month basis to those who are
referred to the Center. Clients must be referred by a school, agency, church, or the
