Topic: Nursery rhyme-Le fermier dans son pré Lesson: 7 Main lesson aims: By the end of this lesson you will be able to: take part in a nursery rhyme in French; recognise masculine and feminine nouns. Starter: Teacher introduces the 8 nouns required for teaching the rhyme in the following order and sticking the flashcards(resource 7.1a) to the board, with the pupils repeating the French:”le fermier”,”son pré”,”la femme”,”l’enfant”,”la nourrice”,”le chat”,”la souris”,”le fromage”.At this point ask the children what they think the rhyme might be . Activity: 1. Choral repetition of vocabulary – loudly, softly, quickly, slowly etc. Pupils only repeat if the teacher is pointing to the correct flashcard. 2. Reinforce with games such as Kim’s game. 4. Introduce the 2 verbs required in the rhyme, using actions: “prend”(mime taking hold of something) “battu”(mime patting something). 5. Say the rhyme, using the flashcards. Encourage the children to participate as soon as soon as they feel comfortable. 6.Focus on the sounds é(ohé, pré) and er (fermier) Learning objectives and outcomes: O3.4 Listen attentively – repeat words and phrases modelled by the teacher. KAL Imitate pronunciation of sounds LLS Use actions and rhymes to aid memorisation Use gestures to show understanding O3.1 Listen and respond to simple rhymes O3.2 Recognise and respond to sound patterns and words KAL Recognise how sounds are presented in the written form ©MFL Sunderland 2009 RM http://www.sunderlandschools.org/mfl-sunderland 7. Make up actions for all of the nouns and say the rhyme again doing the actions. 8.Talk about the differences between the French and English versions of the rhyme. 9. Sing song with actions. Children (who have already selected a ‘farmer’) form a circle around him or her. They hold hands and go around in a circle singing the song. At the end of the ‘wife’ verse the farmer chooses his ‘wife’ from the circle, who then joins the other child in the middle. The song continues with the last child chosen selecting the character from the next verse. The child who plays the ‘mouse’ is the farmer in the next round. Consolidation work: Draw pictures of characters with labels for a class display. Resources required: Resource 7.4- Flashcards Resource 7.2a- story script Resource 7.3a – word flashcards LLS Compare the language with English O3.4 Listen attentively – remember a sequence of spoken words L3.1 Recognise some familiar words in written form Language: Le fermier –the farmer Son pré- his meadow La femme – the wife L’enfant – the child La nourrice- the nurse Le chat – the cat La souris – the mouse ©MFL Sunderland 2009 RM http://www.sunderlandschools.org/mfl-sunderland Le fromage - the cheese Prend – takes Battu - pats Follow on activities: 1.Introduce the written form of the noun flashcards – pupils match with the pictures(resource 7.3a) 2. Play “human oxo”:-place 9 flashcards on floor.Team members who correctly identify a square take the place of the flashcard, sitting on the floor crossing their arms if they are from the “x” team or sitting with their arms around the knees if they are from the “o” team. 3. (optional task)Ask children to separate the flashcards into two groups.Encourage and help children to create one group of blue colour-coded flashcards–“le” words, and one group of red colour-coded flashcards – “la” words..Ask the children to work out the meaning of “le” and “la” – “the” and that there are 2 words for “the” in French(do not worry about” l’ “unless you feel it necessary to explain that the “e” or “a “ is dropped when the noun begins with a vowel). Explain that some are masculine words and some are feminine words and that in French all words are either masculine or feminine ,even if they are words like cheese! Practice words again using low voices and pointing to the floor for male words and high squeaky voices and pointing to the ceiling for female words. ©MFL Sunderland 2009 RM http://www.sunderlandschools.org/mfl-sunderland
