Anne Arundel County Public Schools PARENT INVOLVEMENT ADVISORY COUNCIL Meeting Minutes February 28, 2013 Present: Carol Streeter, Kim Offutt, Russell Leone, Brian Ravanbakhsh, Janea Milburn, Marirose Hubscher, Tammy Russell, Orhan Omer, Ellen Olsen, Jaclyn Munoz, Jacqueline Hernandez, Pam Bukowski, Jenni Smith, Lisa Eliot, Ambareen Jafri, Laurie Dietrich, Flo Kennedy-Stack, Anne Weaver, Teresa Tudor Welcome Janea Milburn called the meeting to order and welcomed everyone. Teresa Tudor introduced Sally Pelham, Assistant Superintendent for Student Support Services, who also welcomed the group and thanked them for their dedication to the cause of promoting increased parent involvement in our schools. Janea reviewed the minutes of the January meeting. Member Reports PIAC members gave brief reports on parent involvement activities happening in their schools/clusters. A few examples were: - Crofton Elementary is working with NASA to set up a robotics presentation for grades 3-5 via Adobe Connect. Carol Streeter forwarded a flyer about this opportunity, which is attached to these minutes. She also mentioned that Don Thomas, a former astronaut, may be available to do student presentations. She will contact him to check on his availability. - Pam Bukowski reported that information nights on Common Core State Standards were held in January and February at Annapolis HS and Old Mill HS. Anne Weaver mentioned that the PowerPoint presentation used on both nights, plus a brochure on Common Core Mathematics, are available at www.aacps.org/family (click on Parent Resources). This can be shared with all your cluster schools. - Pam also shared that Phoenix Annapolis is holding monthly family dinners as a way to bring together families from all over the county whose students are attending Phoenix. - Corkran Middle is holding an MSA information event this Saturday at the Woodside Apartment complex. - Severna Park Middle is holding a cluster-wide Earth Day event on a Saturday. Both schools and community groups will be represented. - Mills-Parole’s bilingual facilitator holds a monthly Latino Information Night to inform families about important dates that month, as well as what is happening in each grade. - MacArthur Middle held an honor roll reception and invited the students, their families, and the students’ friends. There was also a photo booth set up. Bob Yatsuk, Supervisor of School Security, “School Security Updates” Bob provided a brief history of the Office of School Security, which was established as a centralized unit in 2003, and uses both grant and county funds to provide security equipment, 1 Superintendent’s Parent Involvement Advisory Council Meeting Minutes – page 2 February 28, 2013 programs, and training. Some additions over the last 10 years include: security cameras, cell phones for administrators, a student safety hotline, online storage of school emergency plans, the Raptor system to screen visitors, emergency kits, and training for school secretaries in dealing with volatile situations, among many others. New Business - Speaker for April 25 meeting – A suggestion was made to invite Kathy Lane, Executive Director of Alternative Education, to speak about alternative schools and charter schools within AACPS. Teresa will contact her. - Volunteers to help with set up for the Volunteer Tea, Thursday, May 23 – We will send an email to PIAC members in early May asking who would be available to help set up for the Volunteer Tea. We are expecting about 500 that day. - Lisa Eliot expressed a concern about the lack of supervision for high school students who attend Relay for Life events. Teresa will talk with Dr. Maxwell to get his suggestions about communicating this concern to the Relay for Life chapters in Anne Arundel County. Events - - An Early Learning Summit, co-sponsored by AACPS and the Early Childhood Coalition, will be held on Saturday, May 4, from 8:30 am until noon, at Old Mill High School. The topic is “What Every Child Needs: Collaborating for School Readiness” and will focus on how the entire community can help prepare children, aged birth to 5, to be ready to be successful in school. Flyers were distributed. The Volunteer Recognition Tea will be held on Thursday, May 23, from 8:30 am until 10:30 am at Michael’s Eighth Avenue. All PIAC members are invited; invitations will be distributed soon.
