The Golden Globes are presented by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association to honor achievements in film and television during the calendar year. The show, telecast live on NBC on January 25 and broadcast in 125 countries, attracted a worldwide television audience of 250 million viewers. Veteran sound engineer Bruce Burns of Innovative Audio Technologies, Inc. of Sun Valley, CA, has selected Apogee loudspeakers for the Golden Globes since Apogee technology was available in 1985. In 2000, The Beverly Hilton, impressed by the quality and reliability of Apogee’s performance, purchased from Thomas Gregor Audio Associates a permanent Apogee system for the International Ballroom, which seats 1281 for the Golden Globes. The ballroom also hosts other entertainment industry awards shows and high profile fund raising events. -more- Page 2 — Apogee/Golden Globes The International Ballroom presents a challenging environment for a televised awards show. The loudspeakers must be placed outside of the view of the television cameras, the room has a low ceiling, and a new set configuration was implemented this year. Said Barry Grzebik, Apogee’s Director of Engineering, “It was an interesting environment, balancing the need to have a visually unobtrusive system operating at levels low enough so as to not to interfere with the broadcast sound, yet providing even coverage and intelligibility throughout the ballroom.” “We had to re-hang some of the speakers,” Burns said. “But getting the result we wanted wasn’t a problem because Apogee loudspeakers make it easy to achieve uniform coverage. We received compliments on the clarity of the center stage Scheops pop-up microphone from the director, the on-air mixer and the crew members outside in the truck.” The Beverly Hilton’s inventory of Apogee loudspeakers includes four AE-9s, six AE-2s, five SSMs, four AE-11s, and four FS-2 Stage Monitors. Eleven Apogee SA-700 amplifiers supply the power. Burns augmented this system with four Apogee AE-5s. The AE-9 is a fully arrayable, bi-amped, three-way system (Drivers: 15" Low Frequency. 10" Mid Frequency, 1" High Frequency) that can be easily positioned in spaces that are too small for other horn-loaded systems. The AE-2 is a wide-angle, two-way (LF: Dual 8", HF: Dual 1"), single-amped system that produces the wide coverage angle (165 degrees) while minimizing sight-line obstructions. The SSM is a single-amped, two-way loudspeaker (LF: Dual 4.5", HF: 1") that is extremely small and lightweight, yet capable of high acoustical output with exceptional linearity. -morePage 3 — Apogee/Golden Globes The compact FS-2 bi-amped stage monitor (LF: 12", HF: 2") features exceptionally high output capability and specialized sonic properties that enable it to cut through any amount of ambient stage “wash.” The AE-5 two-way, bi-amped loudspeaker (LF: 12", HF: 1") is the flagship of the Apogee line. This fully arrayable speaker functions brilliantly when used alone, or as a building block of a large, sophisticated system, making it one of the most versatile speakers ever developed. The SA-700 power amplifier (545 watts per channel at 8 ohms, 775 at 4 ohms, 700 at 2 ohms with less than .007% THD) provides affordable high power amplification for concerts, theaters, clubs, touring and fixed installations “I choose Apogee because the sound quality is outstanding and reliability is never a question,” said Burns, who is also known for his work on the Grammies, Academy Awards, Emmy Awards, Academy of Country Music Awards and other major awards shows. “The Golden Globes audience is packed with film stars, television stars, producers, directors — and there are millions of people watching on TV. Obviously it’s imperative that the sound system not fail, and with Apogee loudspeakers, I know that it’s going to be flawless.” FOH engineer Randy Faustino, who has handled this task for five years, was the man behind the console. Faustino has often mixed on Apogee equipment including work with the Jerry Lewis Telethon, the Spirit Awards and many other prestigious events. “Apogee Speakers were an excellent tool in providing crystal clear sound throughout the International Ballroom,” Faustino said. “They allowed me to push dialog levels above the loud ambience of the crowd, without hurting the integrity of the on-air mix.” Burns praised Grzebik for his participation in the deployment of the Apogee system. “Barry is a gold mine,” Burns said. “He assisted with the decision making processes in re-hanging the speakers, tuning the room, and in making sure everything in the Apogee domain was being done correctly.” -morePage 4 — Apogee/Golden Globes The Hollywood Foreign Press Association is a nonprofit organization of working journalists whose members represent magazines and newspapers in some fifty-five countries with a combined readership exceeding 250 million.
