situation in specific detail. The election of 1876 was a disputed election. Democrat Samuel Tilden
won the popular vote and also won the electoral vote but was one shy of a majority. The election
was decided by Congress when a committee voted 8-7 for Hayes along party lines and Hayes
promised to end military occupation and Reconstruction of the South.
