Requirements: pens, photocopies of the “People Bingo” sheets, and a prize (if one will be given). 9:45 a.m. • Activity: Anatomy of an Entrepreneur Participants learn the definition of an entrepreneur and the characteristics of an entrepreneur. Requirements: Flipchart paper, markers, handout on Entrepreneurial Characteristics (could use the list from the Word Search) *Snacks could be served while groups are working on this activity 10:20 a.m. At-home Activity - The Entrepreneur in Me • Indicate to participants that this is an exercise for them to complete at home. It gives the participants time to reflect on the entrepreneurial characteristics that they possess and those which they feel need to be developed more. 10:30 a.m. • Activity: Business by Myself or Business with a Buddy Discuss the advantages/disadvantages of each scenario. Could involve some role playing. Requirements: Flipchart, markers, pencils, participant workbook 10:45 a.m. • Discussion: Choosing a Mentor/Support System Discussion surrounds the role of a mentor and the qualities to look for in a mentor. Requirements: Flipchart, markers, pencils, participant workbook 11:00 a.m. • Activity: Business Ideas under $100 Gives participants an opportunity to brainstorm. This activity can also be used to illustrate the types of business opportunities that exist such as retail, service or manufacturing by going over the suggestions and identifying what each is. Requirements: Flipchart, markers, pencils, participant workbook 11:30 a.m. • Discussion: Why do a business plan? An opportunity to discuss with the participants the reasons why it is important to do a business plan. Requirements: Flipchart, markers, pencils, participant workbook 11:45 a.m. • Activity: The 4 P’s of a Business Plan This activity involves creating a mind map that illustrates all the things that should be considered when opening a business and preparing a business plan. Most of the considerations will fall into the category of: price, place, promotion, and product/service. Requirements: Flipchart, markers, pencils, participant workbook. 12:00 p.m. Activity: Mind Mapping the Business Plan • • Provides participants with an opportunity to create a mind map for their own business. This could be given as an “at home” activity if there isn’t enough time for participants to complete it during the workshop. Requirements: Participants will need their workbooks & a pencil. 12:15 p.m. • • • 12:30 p.m. Review & Homework Review topics covered during workshop session and point out which sections can be filled out in the business plan after today’s session. Homework includes: The Entrepreneur in Me, deciding on a business idea, choosing a mentor, and mind mapping their business idea. Optional homework: Word Search Day One Complete!!! Discuss with participants the topics that will be covered during Day Two. Discussion: Business Idea Description Explains the importance of developing a concise, business idea description. They are... “Doing WHAT, for WHOM, so THAT” Requirements: Flipchart and markers 9:35 a.m. • Activity: Tell Us About Your Idea Provides the participants with an opportunity to work on their business description. Considerations should include (but are not limited to): the type of product/service to be offered, how they plan to offer this, and why their idea has potential Requirements: Participant workbook & pencils. **Snacks could be served while participants are working on this activity. • 9:55 a.m. Discussion: Transportation Gives the participant an opportunity to think about different reasons they would need transportation and who will provide it for them Requirements: flipchart, markers 10:05 a.m. • Discussion: Knowing Your Customer Discussion surrounds the importance of understanding the customer. Examples of companies that did a good (and a not so good) job of knowing their customer. Requirements: flipchart, markers 10:35 a.m. Discussion: What’s in a Name? Discussion surrounds naming a business and how to choose a good one. Requirements: flipchart, markers, and examples of business names 10:50 a.m. Activity: The Name Game • 11:05 a.m. gives participants the opportunity to brainstorm names for their own business. Requirements: participant workbook & pencils Discussion:Market Research Activity: Developing a Market Survey • Explanation of market research & types of market research. Also, refer back to things they need to know about their customer. • Participants are given time to develop a marketing survey for their business. Requirements: flipchart, markers 12:00 p.m. • • Review & Homework Review topics covered and the corresponding sections of the business plan that can now be completed. Homework includes: deciding on a business name, completing mind map, finish writing market survey, and ask the market survey to 10 people. **This is a “lighter” day. Discuss with participants the topics that will be covered during Day Three. Review: Market Research Take 10 minutes to make sure that participants had completed their market research and understand their findings. Discussion/Activity: Marketing and Promotion discussion surrounds the different methods of marketing and promotion. What would the participants use? Requirements: flipchart, markers, pencils, and participant workbooks. 9:50 a.m. • Discussion: Customer Service Participants will learn about the value of communicating a good first impression to the customer and how that impacts sales. Requirements: flipchart, markers, pencils, and participant workbooks **Snacks could be served prior to the following exercise. 10:10 a.m. • Activity: Supplies This activity gives participants the opportunity to think about what purchases they need to make for their business, who their supplier will be, and how much these items will cost. Requirements: flipchart, markers, pencils, participant workbooks 10:35 a.m. • Activity: Timbit® Finances to show participants the various costs that go into running a business such as marketing, supplies, wages, taxes, and etc. Requirements: box of Timbits®, flipchart, markers, pencils, participant workbooks 11:05 a.m. Discussion/Activity: Pricing - How Much Can I Make introduces the concept of pricing to participants Requirements: flipchart, markers, pencils, participant workbooks 11:35 a.m. • Discussion: Banking The purpose is to communicate to participants that, should they be accepted into the Program, they will need a bank account for their business. Requirements: flipchart and markers 11:45 a.m. Activity: Goals & Objectives • Discussion surrounds the development of summer objectives for the participants. Participants are given the opportunity to set goals for themselves Requirements: flipchart, markers, pencils, participant workbooks. 12:00 p.m. 12:30 p.m. Review & Homework Optional: Bookkeeping • Review topics covered and the corresponding sections of the business plan that can now be completed. • Indicate what needs to be done for the interview week (ie: business plan complete, partnership agreement if required, personal contract completed) • If participants have not finished designing their promotional material, allow time for this. • If you are not holding a cheque presentation, then you will want to also review bookkeeping with participants at this time. Day 3 Complete
