ASCSU Cabinet Director’s 4/1/2008 President’s Report –Katie Gleeson As we enter the second week of elections, please remember that we are all here to serve students and should be positively working toward the future of CSU and ASCSU. Meeting with Paul Kowalczyk: Vice President Trout and I met with Athletic Director Kowalczyk last Thursday to discuss the athletics student fee increase proposal. As you are probably aware, athletics will ask the Student Fee Review Board for an additional $15 per student/per semester fee increase for the FY09 year. We did express our frustration with the process to AD Kowalczyk and the many questions we expect SFRB to have. Meeting with Vice President for Student Affairs Blanche Hughes: Last Wednesday, Vice President Trout and I met with Blanche Hughes. We discussed the athletics fee increase at length and communication between the administration and ASCSU and suggestions for next year. Leadershape: Attention ASCSUers, anyone who has intentions of returning to ASCSU next year and is interested in attending the best week-long leadership retreat ever, Leadershape, please e-mail me your name and contact information. Each year, SLiCE reserves spots for ASCSU members to attend Leadershape and they are looking for names of folks who have not yet participated to go this year. This is an incredible opportunity; I encourage you to think about applying. ASCSU FY2009 Budgets: Director Wilke and I have been discussing the budget suggestions we will make the new President and VP elect for next year. Directors, please see Director Wilke or Controller Laue with budget updates and/or suggestions for next year. This is VITAL for proper budgetary planning. Elections: Senate will be cancelled this week in order for all ASCSU members to attend the Theatre Debate. This is a MANDATORY event for all ASCSU members. Please remember to keep elections discussions out of the office. I am here to talk to anyone who has questions about the role of the president, the role on the Board of Governors, etc. Finally, do not forget to vote on April 7-9th on Ram Web. Please remind all of your friends as we hope to reach 25% student turnout. Collegian Advisory Committee: The Collegian Advisory committee will meet this week to discuss any proposals forwarded to the committee. CSU/City Liaison Meeting: This Wednesday, the City of Fort Collins and CSU will hold its CSU/City Liaison meeting on campus. For suggestions of items of discussion, please inform Director Freudenthal. Transfort: I wanted to remind everyone that ASCSU is in the middle of a three year contract with Transfort. The contract ends in June 2009. ASCSU pays Transfort based on increases/decreases in ridership for the previous year. Please see me with questions. Dates to Remember 4/2/08: ASCSU President/Vice President Debate, LSC Theatre 4/7/08-4/9/08: VOTE on RamWeb for ASCSU President, VP, Senator, For-Ever-Green shirt design 4/2/08: CSU/City Liaison meeting Vice President’s Report – Trevor Trout There is no Senate meeting this week. Student Fee Review Board: Athletics is proposing a $15.00 fee increase. We will be hearing from Athletics on April 8th. University Counseling Center and Hartshorn Health Center fee were endorsed to cover mandatory cost increases, for the extension of a counseling position and a new psychiatrist in addition to mandatory costs. Senate: If you are interested in running for the 38th Senate please apply now! Organizational Representative Working Group: This is an Ad Hoc committee of highly invested ASCSU members who will be tackling pressing city and university issues. WE WILL BE MEETING THIS UPCOMING SUNDAY! Meetings will be held Sunday nights at Alley Cat. Drinks will be provided. Finance Report – Chris Wilke Student Funding Board: Distributed a total of $202,634.68 this year we have no more money left to distribute for the rest of the year besides possible reversions from other events funded. SFB Meetings: We have had some reversions! We will be having a Funding Board meeting Thursday at 5:15pm. We will be hearing from 2 of the groups on the waiting list this week. May have more reversions coming up. Probably will only have 2 more funding board meetings for the rest of the year. It’s been a spectacular year for funding board! Legislation for SFB: It’s coming! Senator Sarah Walker has started drafting out the legislation for Senate. All amendments have passed Student Funding Board but they all need to be approved. ASCSU Budget: I have begun to work on the ASCSU Budget for academic year 2009. I would like to meet with each department within the next week to discuss what you feel would be appropriate for next year. Also, any ASCSU input would be greatly appreciated during the initial planning phase. From there, after elections, we will do some tweaking for the President and Vice President Elect and present to SFRB, SFB, and then Senate. For quite some time ASCSU has had only one member present and for several meetings no representation at all. It is very important to have representation from the Student population. Many changes will be occurring quickly regarding parking due to the huge amount of construction that is/will be taking place on the CSU campus. These changes will greatly affect all of us in regard to parking. Here are the remaining dates for the PSC this school year: Wednesday April 9 and Wednesday May 7, 2008. Meetings are to start at noon and can last until 2:00pm. Both remaining meetings will be held at the Lory Student Center Room 220-222. For more information please contact Andy Shank or myself. SLiCE/ASCSU Grad assistant: We have decided upon a candidate for next year’s SLiCE/ASCSU grad assistant from the SAHE program. The candidate’s name is Brett Rundle. Brett is a graduate of Kansas State University. He holds a BS in Finance and Marketing and a minor in Economics. Brett has spent the last year working as a leadership consultant for Beta Theta Phi. If you have any questions you can talk to Seth Walter, Pam Sampson or I for more information. ELECTIONS: As we are half way through campaign season I want to remind you all that there is NO CAMPAIGNING IN THE OFFICE!!! Also I am hoping that we can all focus on our jobs and what we need to get done, even though many different things will be going on... So please, do your jobs, because I will call ya’ll out publicly if you’re slackin! Dates to Remember 04/01/08 Matt Roloff: Little People, Big World 04/02/08 Communicating Climate Change 04/02/08 Women at Noon 04/03-05/08 Studio Dance Performances (these are really cool!!!) 04/04/08 Women's Tennis vs. BYU 04/05/08 Women's Tennis vs. Utah Academics –Dan Palmer TEXTBOOKS:We are having a thank you event for all who participated on the textbooks legislation, their friends, and all who want to come on Saturday, April 5th from 11am-3:30pm at Rolland Moore Park. Each member of the academics department (and Blake) will have ten faculty signed up for this campaign by Wednesday April 2nd. The walk for cheaper textbooks is starting up again. Orders are due by April 15th. We will present information about the walk for cheaper textbooks to different student groups. We need your help calling faculty and putting up door hangers. We will pass around a sheet on Wednesday April 2nd at the debates. HONOR CODE: We have failed. We are looking for help from senators to write a bill to formalize the language for the honor code, and that will empower next year’s Director of Academics to actually do something about the honor code. 2010 BUDGET: Russ and Caiter will begin working on this over the coming week. It is one of the Academic Department’s long-term goals, and we want to start working on the budget so that we can start on it earlier next year. Community Affairs –Katie Freudenthal Hello everyone! I hope your all doing well and staying up to date on the director’s reports. City Council: Ram Leader Courtney Sullivan has been going to City Council Meetings in my place because I have a mandatory class on Tuesday evenings. Council is very aware of ASCSU’s presence at their meetings and this really helps city/student relations. Thanks for your help Courtney. Housing Fair: The housing fair was a great success! We gave out 500 forevergreen t-shirts. The catch was that students had to take a short survey on the Over Occupancy Ordinance. Many students were unaware or didn’t know the details on this ordinance. It was a great educational outreach event. Vote Coalition: Due to scheduling conflicts, this meeting unfortunately had to be pushed back a week. One of our agenda items will include a “kick off” publicity event for the Vote Coalition and hopefully highlights about the President’s Commitment to Civic Engagement. I will keep you updated. City Council is coming to Campus: I have finally secured a date with the city manager’s office. It will happen April 29th most likely from 5:30 – 7:00 pm. The exact time may be subject to change but the 29th will be the exact day. The entire Council, Mayor, and City Manager will be in attendance. This is a pretty cool event ASCSU is hosting, as the ENTIRE Council has not been on campus at the same time for several years. I am working with Director Settle on marketing. Mark your calendars! City/CSU Liaison Meeting: There is another quarterly meeting this Wednesday and I will be in attendance. I have a few agenda items for discussion such as the Council/Campus Event, Boarding House Permits, Occupancy Outreach, and possibly a few more updates. Voter Registration: Are you registered to vote? I am picking up more Voter Reg. forms Tuesday. We can register people to vote. Help register or inform others that ASCSU can provide that service. Please see me or Assistant Director Lenz for more information on voter registration. Environmental Affairs: Assistant Director of Environmental Affairs Vieth has had a recent success with his compost program. He informed me today that it should be up and running in the residence halls next month. Congrats Will! Important Dates to Remember: April 29th 2008: City Council is coming to Campus – exact times still TBD but most likely 5:30 – 7:00 pm. Watch for updates/marketing. Diversity & Outreach –Gabe Barela I spent the weekend in Estes Park at the “Somos Rams” Leadership Retreat. This was a retreat hosted by El Centro Student Services and was designed to bring freshmen and sophomore students into El Centro and familiarize them with staff and resources offered through El Centro. We took approximately 30 students and engaged them in leadership and cultural relevant workshops. The central theme of the retreat was the “circle of elements.” This is a central philosophy El Centro uses to train its staff and outreach to potential students. My particular role in this Retreat was to serve as a resource and facilitator for the workshops and students involved. The Human Race Machine is now on display (March 31-April 8) from 10-4pm. This display will alternate between the Art Lounge and Sunken Lounge in the LSC. With machine people will be able to interactively see how they would look as a member of another race. You can also age yourself and see how your offspring would look with your partner. We Are State Campaign is scheduled to be launched this week, Thursday April 2. From 11-2 you can come in and sign a declaration of acceptance and get a T-shirt. The goal of We Are State, is too increase awareness of inclusive language, diversifying your campus experience, and ways to stop hate. A website with several resources will also be launched as part of this campaign. Contact Assistant Director Jaimes for details. IMPORTANT DATES April 11th- 3rd Meeting at Lincoln for the Bridge Project April 12th- Bridge Project/CSUnity Date!!!!! WOOT WOOT!!! Legislative Affairs Department –August Ritter Hello: to dispel the rumors I have been hearing about my absence… I am not dead. I am in fact alive and well. I did not spend the last two weeks in a Mexican jail. I was taking a breather with the fam in Moab Utah. But thanks for all of your concerns and questions about Mexican jails anyway. I’d like to thank Holli and Mary for holding down the fort while I was gone. It doesn’t seem like anything monumental has happened since I was gone but here are the few things I have to update you all on. The tracking report: We are tracking fewer and fewer bills down at the legislature every week since some of them are either getting passed or are dying in their respective committees. If you have questions about these just let me know. Severance Tax for Funding Higher Education: There have been some different proposals about an increase in a severance tax to help fund higher education next year. Most of these proposals look like they will be sent to the ballot in November of next year. (only one will go to the voters). Right now it looks like we might be teaming up with environmentalists to pass something in the fall that would benefit both of us. Representative Buescher also has something that would help fund higher ed. (If you want more details just inquire) While all of these proposals look great, and they are, none of them is really the “BIG FIX” we are hoping for. I worry that if voters pass something that helps higher ed, but not as much as it needs, they will be less likely to vote for something to help higher ed again in the future. But that is all just speculation from me. I suppose we should be grateful for any help we can get from the state at this point. Lobbying in the final days: As the session comes to a close there will definitely be some opportunity for those of you to lobby down at the capitol that haven’t done so already this year. If you are one of those people, or you want to lobby again, please email me at your earliest convenience and I’ll be sure to let you know when I am heading down to the capitol again… to change the world…one tuition dollar at a time. Marketing –Mark Settle Ski Bus: Snowriders is doing a great job selling discount shuttle rides to Breckenridge and Keystone. We're running an ad on Thursday to ensure that all seats are filled. ASCSU Website: Our working group is meeting this Sunday, at 2:30, to work on the website. Our present website is moving forward every day. RamRide Website: I have a fantastic update on the future RamRide website. I look forward to telling you more at Senate, next week. Elections: Our website has been updates with new elections stuff, and tee shirts have been designed. We're doing a big three day voting push to get the word out about voting. We're targeting specific groups with specific messages (ie, Seniors, did you know you can still vote? etc). Community Affairs: I'm working on a project with C.A., though I can't remember what... it's due toward the end of this month, so I should try to remember. RamRide –Alliy Barrell I hope everyone’s weekends were great! We don’t have too much going on… Thank You event: We are looking into where to have our thank you event this spring. We are currently thinking either broomball or bowling, if you have a strong opinion, let us know! We are tentatively planning on serving Snow cones and lemonade! Dates to Remember: 4/5/2008 – Weekend Ski/Board Shuttle 4/25/2008—SMILE Project 4/26/2008 – CSU vs CU Lacrosse Road Trip 4/29/2008-Student-Coach Mixer Judicial Report –Cari Stepsay “Know your rights: Academic dishonesty” the article written by Katie McLaughlin and Robert Drost appeared in the Collegian on Monday, March 31, 2008. This is a first step in the direction of being proactive. Look forward to the court doing more things to bring awareness to the campus. If you or anyone you know has questions regarding academic dishonesty please let them know the court can help as well as the Office of Conflict Resolution. Appeal Hearing: Only one this week and one next week. New Innovations: o We will be looking into robes to wear as advertisement. Possibly on the Plaza with signs saying, “Ask me about my robe”. If anyone has any feedback regarding this idea, please let anyone from the court know or email us. o As most of you have noticed, the constitution that sits in the senate chambers has seen many days, the court is hoping to find the funding to replace the raged constitution with the newly ratified constitution concluding this year. Internal: o Dan Gearhart and Mark are working diligently on improving the courts portion of the website. Look forward to being able to find any information regarding constitutions for Sports Clubs, SAVA, and all bylaws. Since our project is being proactive and more involved we will also include the options for pursuing academic dishonesty. o The court has a training this Wednesday regarding our participation with the Office of Conflict Resolution. The Court will now play a large role in the student’s option to speak to either a hearing officer from the Office of Conflict Resolution or, now, a Justice regarding their options and paths for an appeal.
