RESOURCES FOR ELEMENTARY ELLs
The following bibliography includes the resources used in this CD, plus recommended
content resources.
CORRECTION: The posters displayed during the presentations were primarily from On Our Way
to English by Rigby. None were from Avenues by Hampton-Brown as credited, rather from Into
English, another ESL program from that publisher. Avenues is Hampton-Brown’ most current
ESL program. The large visual support in that program is in Big Books and Sing-Along Language
Songs Big-Books. The books shown in the demonstrations were from the following resources:
Posters from Into English, Hampton-Brown publisher were used in the CD presentation.

Avenues offers standards-based instruction in English reading and language arts and is
carefully designed for English learners and struggling readers in Grades K-5 to accelerate
their growth in language, literacy, and content. Using carefully chosen literature
selections in both fiction and nonfiction, instruction proceeds from building vocabulary
and language to understanding the fundamentals of reading (phonemic awareness,
phonics and decoding), development of comprehension skills, writing, and applications in
content-area studies. Level A (kindergarten), utilizes three types of lessons to explore
unit concepts and vocabulary with the Big Picture Word Book, fiction and non-fiction,
big books for shared reading, Little Language Books, and the Alphachant Phonics Kit.
In Levels B & C, (Grades 1 & 2), Big Books set the stage for each unit. Components
for all levels include Student Book, Practice Book, Teacher’s Edition, Teacher’s Support
pack: Practice Book, Resource Book, Sing-Along Language Songs Big-Book, Song &
Selection CD’s, Kidspiration CD-ROM, and PhotoFile Picture Cards. Add-On Materials
available include Phonics Street Kit (grades 1 & 2), Reading Basics (instructional
overheads, letter/word tiles, tape & teacher’s guide), Newcomer Package and English at
your Command! Handbook/Teacher’s Edition/Practice Book.
On Our Way to English. David Freeman, Yvonne Freeman, Mary Lou McCloskey,
Margo Gottlieb, et. al. Rigby, 2003.
This comprehensive state-of-the-art program developed for English Language Learners
focuses on language, literacy and content. It provides children simultaneous access to
English oral language development, balanced literacy instruction and standards based
content area information. Thematic Units, Guided Reading, and Phonics/Word Study are
the three major strands in the program. The Assessment Package is both systemic and
comprehensive, offering teachers a wealth of information that can be used in reporting
progress and in instructional planning. A matrix on the back of each leveled reader
indicates both language proficiency & readability levels. Teacher’s Guides, Guided
Reading books, Writing Resource Guides, Manipulative Charts, Chant Posters,
Newcomer Book, Masters, Picture Cards, Audio CD’s are all available for this program.

Theme Packs for English Language Learners. Rigby.
This program is composed of multi-leveled theme packs that provide reading materials
across literacy levels and supply strategies for using those materials with a variety of
Language Acquisition Stages. Each teacher’s guide provides a hands-on activity related
to the theme which focuses on one of the content areas—science, math, or social studies.
The activities outline what materials are needed and how children in the different
Language Acquisition Stages can participate. Each activity is divided into steps that are
keyed to Language Acquisition Stages so that you can identify how to have all children
successfully engage in the activity. (K-5) (The inclusion of content based reading for
emergent to fluent readers and suggestions for use with stage 1 to stage 5 language
learners makes this program appropriate for classrooms with diverse levels of ESL
students.)
Picture Perfect Dictionary 1 & 2. Bingaman, Kahoe, Tintle, et al. HamptonBrown,1994.
The brightly colored dictionaries include pictures and sample sentences for every entry
and define the words in context. Language is simple and sentence samples are illustrated
as needed. Multiple meaning words are presented visually. Expanded entries support
elementary and junior high curriculum. The second book includes parts of speech and
more content vocabulary. The books can be used across grade levels, but book 2 is more
appropriate for students in grades 4-12. A Teacher’s Guide and Activity Card Pack are
available with ideas for games, role-plays, and hands-on activities that are appropriate for
centers or independent work.
