UNIT E – PROPERTIES OF MATTER AND ENERGY
SOL 5.4 The student will investigate and understand that matter is anything that has mass; takes
up space and occurs as a solid, liquid, or gas. Key concepts include
 atoms, molecules, elements, and compounds
 mixtures and solutions; and
 effect of temperature on the states of matter.
Chapter 10 – Properties and Structure of Matter
Lesson 1 – Physical Properties
What Is Matter?
Matter – anything that has mass and takes up space
Mass – the amount of material in an object (measured with a balance)
Volume – the amount of space taken up by an object.
Weight
Weight – has to do with gravity (different from mass)
What Is Density?
Density – how tightly packed matter is
Remember our class demonstration with the 9 floor tiles!
How Dense Are Solids, Liquids, and Gases?
List the states of matter beginning with the one that has the greatest
density:
1.
2.
3.
Solid
Liquid
Gases
