In her concerts, the vivacious virtuoso knows how to enthuse young audiences in particular. In 2012, she was the first and only classical pianist to debut at number 1 on the Classical iTunes Charts in the USA and Canada and has managed to gain a young fan base through her videos on YouTube and presence on social networks. While she is up to date in her style of communication, her way of studying composers and their works might almost seem old-fashioned in its thoroughness. In preparation for her first performance of Beethoven’s complete piano sonatas in Paris in 2010, HJ Lim immersed herself in the composer’s diaries and letters and read all available biographies. Her performance in Paris, which took place over eight consecutive evenings, was repeated in her native South Korea at the Seoul Arts Center and at the Asahi Hall in Tokyo in summer 2013. With Beethoven‘s 2nd Piano Concerto, she returns to Japan and South Korea when she embarks on a major tour of Asia with the Zurich Chamber Orchestra under Sir Roger Norrington, which will also take her to Hong Kong and Thailand in October 2014. In 2011, HJ Lim recorded the complete Beethoven cycle for EMI Classics. Her new recording featuring works by Ravel and Scriabin was released on Warner Classics in February 2014. HJ Lim records exclusively for Warner Classics on Yamaha’s Flagship CFX concert grand pianos. Her solo appearances with orchestras include performances with the NDR Hamburg Symphony Orchestra in Buenos Aires and Sao Paolo, Orquestra Simfònica de Barcelona and Scottish National Orchestra in the Royal Albert Hall. She has also performed with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, Tokyo Metropolitan Symphony Orchestra, Munich Symphony, Seattle Symphony Orchestra, Orchestra of the Welsh National Opera, Moscow Radio Symphony Orchestra at Zurich Tonhalle, Hofer Symphoniker and Philadelphia Chamber Orchestra. HJ Lim has performed solo recitals at many renowned concert halls including Wigmore Hall, Victoria Hall, Sala Verdi in Milan, Stadtcasino in Basel as well as in the Théâtre des Bouffes du Nord and Palais Royal in Paris. She has given performances at festivals such as Festspiele Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Annecy Classic Festival, Gilmore Keyboard Festival and Beethoven Festival of Chicago. HJ Lim began her musical studies at the age of three under Jong-Sun Kim. Aged twelve, Lim chose to relocate to France, where she immersed herself in the musical world of the composers who had shaped her formative years. After becoming the youngest-ever person to obtain the Diplôme d'Etudes Musicales Complètes from the Conservatoire National de Rouen aged fifteen, HJ Lim graduated with First Prize and obtained the Diplôme de Formation Supérieure, with highest distinctions in the class of Henri Barda, from the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique et de Danse de Paris. HJ Lim lives in the French-speaking area of Switzerland.
