Character Motivation
Chapter 6
Just as we make choices that help us get what we want in real life, so do characters in
books. Understanding character’s motivation helps us understand the story. Sometimes
a character will directly say what he or she wants, but other times we must infer, or
guess, what the character wants by observing the character’s actions and choices and by
picking up clues the authors leave in the text.
