Syllabus: Spanish 5 IB/AP 2012-2013 The Spanish 5 IB/AP syllabus comprises three parts: language, texts, and cultural awareness. These three parts are not considered in isolation but fully integrated. All language skills (listening, speaking, reading, and writing) are studied through a range of texts and materials and enable an awareness of the Spanish-speaking world. The syllabus approaches the learning of language through meaning through the study of core themes with the objective of expanded receptive, productive and interactive skills. This program encourages students to become active, compassionate and lifelong learners of the Spanish language and cultures and is conducted entirely in Spanish. Projected schedule of thematic units and related structural topics (may be affected by class acquisition rate): Marking Period 1: CORE THEME: Global Issues OPTIONAL THEME: Science and Technology STRUCTURE: Overview of indicative tenses, gerunds, past participles, passive voice LITERATURE: “Las abejas de bronce” WRITING TASKS: Diary, article, blog; brochure, editorial ORAL: Entrevista Marking Period 2: CORE THEME: Social Relationships OPTIONAL THEME: Social Behaviors and stances STRUCTURE: The subjunctive mood LITERATURE: “Las mujeres en primer plano” – poemas, lecturas, actividades Como agua para chocolate WRITING TASKS: Diary, interview, movie critique, formal/informal letters ORAL: Entrevista Marking Period 3: CORE THEME: Communication and Media OPTIONAL THEME: Health (Traditional/alternative medicine; Euthanasia) STRUCTURE: Pronouns, Prepositions, Infinitives LITERATURE: Authentic articles (newspaper & magazines) WRITING TASKS: Diary, movie critique, formal/informal letters ORAL: Debate **IB Internal Oral and Written assessments will be completed and recorded during late February-mid March.** Marking Period 4: Practice and review for AP/IB exams End of the year project Interspersed throughout the year, students will read, discuss, and interpret authentic materials, including, but not limited to: newspapers, magazines, and selected literary works. Students will prepare formal and informal writing tasks on a variety of practical, professional, and social topics. Students will engage frequently in spontaneous and interactive oral activities. In addition, students will view culturally and thematically relevant films. **Examples of rubrics and other assessment tools can be found on our Spanish 5 IB/AP class page on the right hand side under Resources. **The teacher reserves the right to make changes to the syllabus based on the needs of the class. Grades: All assignments are given a total point value based on their size and difficulty. The grade is derived from dividing the total points possible by the total points earned and using the percentage against the grading scale in the student handbook.
