ENGAGING THE DIGITAL STUDENT INITIATIVE
SUMMER INSTITUTE 2014: JUNE 16-19, 2014
The Summer Institute is a 4-day intensive experience to support faculty in designing high quality
hybrid or online (H/OL) courses, in using a variety of technologies for H/OL classes, and in using
technology to increase student engagement and learning in H/OL and face-to-face (F2F) classes.
We’re delighted that the first two days of the Summer Institute will feature national experts Dr.
Stewart Ross & Ms. Linda Jacoby from “Designing Courses for Significant Learning.” Course
design is the single most important step to take to improve student learning experiences.
Stewart and Linda are brought to us by Cal Poly Pomona’s new Student Success Fee.
Any faculty member is welcome to participate. Two levels of participation are invited:
 Full institute – faculty attend the entire 4-day institute with the committed intention of
transforming a particular class from face-to-face to H/OL, or deeply infusing multiple
technologies into a class, e.g., “flipping” a face-to-face class.
 Course design – faculty attend the first 2 days, focusing on course design. No need to
apply; just register so that we can count you in for materials and meals.
Incentives:
 Full-institute participants – Stipends of $500 for participation in the full 4-day institute
will be available to 30 participants who apply (form attached). The stipend will be
awarded upon completion of the institute. While priority will be given to faculty who
are new to the summer institutes, faculty who have participated previously and have
shared best practices with others in their departments are encouraged to apply.
 Course design participants – Outstanding learning experience in the company of a
diverse group of faculty colleagues! There’s plenty of space, so feel free to register.
